  • Dr. Daniel G. Amen is a double board-certified psychiatrist, professor, TV producer, and 10-time New York Times bestselling author. He is one of the world's foremost experts on using brain imaging tools to help optimize and treat patients. He is founder and medical director of Amen Clinics, which has the world’s largest database of functional brain scans relating to behavior.
Dr. Amen visited Google to discuss his latest book, "The Brain Warrior's Way: Ignite Your Energy and Focus, Attack Illness and Aging, Transform Pain into Purpose" He explained that psychiatrists are among the only medical professionals who do not consistently utilize imaging of the body part they treat (the brain). But looking at the brain changes everything - Dr. Amen described the daily behaviors we can take that either improve or harm our brain's health.

Avoid anything that Hurts the Brain
    - Avoid hitting your head, the brain is fragile
    - Drugs, THC, alcohol, nicotine, pornography
    - Fats in your body are bad, lesser the better . . at least 6% - 16% body fat
    - Inactivity, our body is made to move; not to sit for 3 straight hours
    - Poor diet (Eat real food not fast foods and processed foods)
    - Less than 6 hrs of sleep unless you're a mutant
How to have a better brain, better life
    - Learn something new daily & learn at least one mistake
    - Coordination Exercises ~weights, racket sports (table tennis is the best), dancing
    - Appropriate anxiety (Avoid being those "Don't worry be happy" people; practice Conscientiousness)
    - Great Nutrition ~low glycemic, high fiber, healthy fats (monounsaturated fatty acids, Polyunsaturated fatty acids, Omega-3 fatty acids)
    ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ - Sleep 7-8 hrs, unless you're a mutant
    - ANT (Automatic Negative Thoughts) must be discipline and beneficial
    - Supplements (Know your stuff before trying)

Very significant information! Thank you so much. I was born premature, had a severe blow to my head (frontal lobe) when I was in my early teens, which rendered me unconscious for a little while. I had short absent seizures as a child, I don't believe that had bothered me much, however I don't know how much it really affected me, my behavior, or my learning, if at all.
I had experienced serious trauma as an adult, both emotionally as well as physically. I also had a root canal gone wrong, where the doctor had accidentally bored through my tooth and bone, as he had done it manually, after which I had suffered immense pain, and was given medication. I was extremely exhausted but could not sleep, took the medication on an empty stomach because I was so exhausted, then had accidentally inhaled gas fumes from a generator that my brother- in- law had been working on.
I had asked him not to do that, at that time, as I was not well. However, he did not listen. Immediately I had a sudden, unexpected, unexplainable, seizure, where my head and right arm shook uncontrollably. I was in my thirties at that time. It scared me.
I am now in my forties. My seizures diminished after some time and went dormant, but appeared again after a few years or so, after experiencing emotional and physical stress at times, or after consuming coffee, after not being able to sleep much. Even exercise had been triggering them, when my heart rate escalated.
I have never been treated for my seizures with medication, as the doctor I have seen here says my case is a complex one, and have not figured out the reason why I have them. They have not yet come to an agreement as to whether medication will make me better or worse. Their opinions vary, and so I have no medication, as well as some years ago, I had also been diagnosed with sleep apnea.
I recognized that I have had chronic insomnia from I was at least 20 years old, and I do not know whether I had sleep apnea all along, or if I had developed it.
Despite all of this, I generally feel well. I am pretty physically healthy, and maintain as much of a healthy lifestyle as is possible. Although exhausted a lot, from lack of enough sleep sometimes, I fluctuate, having times that I am also energetic.
I live on the small tropical, caribbean island, of Jamaica. I am still seeking a doctor who may be able to help me, if at all possible.

Every doctor I've ever researched says that omega-3s are necessary for brain and heart health. Do you have other evidence? I'm still researching, so I'd like to have a lot of resources.

    • @kedwa30
      @kedwa30 6 лет назад

Foods high in Omega-3 include fish, marine algae, vegetable oils, nuts (especially walnuts), chia seed, flax seeds, flaxseed oil, and leafy vegetables. Keep in mind that so called vegetable oil sold in supermarkets is actually grain oil and is not the same thing as a true vegetable oil. Many oils sold in supermarkets are cut with cheap grain oils, so something labeled 'extra virgin olive oil' may actually be a large percentage corn, canola or soybean oil.
Meat is digested in the stomach whereas greens and vegetables get digested once they've passed the stomach. As people grow older, they produce less testosterone which also means less acid is produced by the stomach. It's the natural order of things to eat less meat as we age. Animal protein is great food for fast growing cells, such as developing babies, but also cancer. Look at _The China Study_ by T. Colin Campbell and Thomas M. Campbell which simply shows that populations that eat more meat and dairy products, and any animal protein including fish, get more cancer regardless of having greater wealth and better access to Western medicine.

frostek Actually there is much published scientific evidence on the power of nutrition and even supplements in improving health and preventing disease. It’s just that most docs aren’t pushing nutrition for true healing but instead toxic drugs which only cover symptoms.

    • @roblovegreen

Ab dul McDougall advocates for a high starch low fat diet. Is that really the best diet for the brain and body? Sure one can live in rice, beans, corn and potatoes but what about the omega 3’s? Flax is not a good source because it’s not easy for the body to utilize and who is going to actually eat tons of algae when it tastes like crap?

    I have a question
How does brain rehabilitation heal the eroded parts of brain?
Are these parts of brain shrunk and eroded ?or these parts of brain are non functional and we're gonna make them functional
    Please answer me

    • @kedwa30
      @kedwa30 6 лет назад +2

Although brain cells do not multiply, the brain can still heal via a slow process by which generalized T-cells stored in bone marrow are released and find their way to the brain where they then develop into the specialized brain cell to replace a dead brain cell. The structure of the brain is usually still there, and so the brain can slowly rebuild.
There are many hack articles and popular science articles dumbed down that say scientists have just discovered the hippocampus creates new brain cells etc. but that is not an accurate description of what is happening. Neurogenesis has been published since the '90's. It's not a recent discovery. The media similarly misconstrued Dolly the sheep as being the first clone when really Dolly was the first sheep cloned from a semi-specialized cell.

Honestly I love listening to him talk but I had to give this one a thumbs down for 1 simple reason. Everything is a poison or medicine depending on how you use it. So telling people what they should and shouldn't be eating is way too general. Rather grouping food into categories specific to their benefits and downsides so people can chose food according to their personal experience. No potatoes are not BAD for you. That's just ridiculous. How you chose to eat the food and when is very crucial but overall great video and I love this information, he's really opened my eyes to a lot of things. Thank you !

I feel instead of giving them psychotropics we should instead use the visual mental playground we all have. Obviously drugs don't work for everything. The psychiatrist should be able to easily explore thier subjects mind. I feel they are going into it at a wrong angle and the trajectory is naturally going to be skewed toward either egress or regress, bit I still ain't seen much progress.
In regards to powts.of course it is not 100% benign. There is a time..and there is a place. And.... It's different for each person. As varied as central nervous systems can be, no two will respond exactly the same. Thoughts are the basis of reality, and are far more important than of drugs or not.
In regards to suicide. Its awful. And bad for the soul. One should aim for a natural death. As long as thier is a person who has the conditions that lead to it, there is a reason to fight. To stop the suicide far before it gets to the action taking phase. Suicide is not a one day one moment kind of thing. It goes against the basis of nature, and is horribly offensive to life. I don't think any suicide has ever not been a result of environment.
Scans are good and all, but are just one dimension that should be considered. If every tool you have is a brain scan then every problem starts to look like brain damage.
An awesome brain. I don't know whether it be a gift of God or a curse of terror. But I wouldn't change it for the world. You get there.... I like the subject. Thank you for sharing le googlé.

The biggest wish for my family and my own is to have the brain in very good condition,
thanks for your recommendation, now let me give you some advice,
I had the opportunity to listen to you on TED and at one point it says very emotionally,
that you helped father of his current wife, but that "he would not do it for his ex-wife
"that made me understand that you need more help than all of us together,
the human being is still human being being ex- or being ancestor,
the human is human in every era,
I would like to know that you should also do what you preach,
and my advice to you is to rectify what you said about your ex,
I cannot believe that only I could observe your hatred of your ex-wife,
"what is not yours do not cry out," thank you in the name of all mankind
. Love is a large sublimity that belongs to humans.

Just because other professionals don't accept his methods doesn't make him a charlatan.
