  • For the first time ever, The Lautners welcome back a past guest, Dr. Amen, for another conversation on mental wellness, this time for children. Whether you’re a parent, want to be a parent, or have no desire to be a parent, Dr. Amen offers insight into relationships and development that we’re certain you can apply to your life in some way. Dr. Amen explains why he wanted to write a book with Dr. Charles Fay and tackle what is missing from most parenting books-brain health! He explains the importance of special time, active listening, and letting children make affordable mistakes. There is undeniably a youth mental health crisis, and Dr. Amen hopes that by offering a “parenting manual” that encourages firm, kind parenting, children will have a better chance at mental strength from the very start.

Loved this episode! I've gotten my brain scanned at Dr Amen's Seattle clinic, and found out that I have a PTSD brain (diamond pattern) and a lot of inflammation. It was one of the most insightful experiences I've had. They showed me my brain scan next to a healthy one in comparison, and it was night and day difference. Very validating to see an actual image of my unhealthy brain (vs just answering questions of what my symptoms are). So interesting to see areas that have too much blood flow, and areas that don't have enough. Dr Amen is awesome.

I like Dr. Amen's approach to brain health, and I am also behind on letting kids solve their own problems. Late did I realise that one of the things that had kept me behind in life was my mum doing everything for me (she didn't know better), which made me feel incompetent for long.
With this said, the "Love and Logic" approach he mentions really does NOT resonate with me. It assumes kids try to manipulate parents, for example. As a neuroscientist who's seen tens of thousands of brain scans, he surely knows that a small child has not developed the brain areas capable of manipulating yet. I believe compassionate role modelling is the way.

As a mom of two boys I can tell you this is 💯 so spot on … I’m raising two boys and it’s hard as a parent because there is such a focus in todays society on just children’s emotions but as a mom you have to realize it’s so much more then just emotions it’s also thinking about how do I raise a mentally resilient kid that will need to know how to make it through life and I’ve taken a lot of what he says and have done it with my boys and it’s almost just like it instills common sense in your kids… it also gives them the confidence that they are capable and they can do hard things so just want to say that there are so many good nuggets of wisdom here!

What are the 175 foods that the kid with tics loves and love him back? I'd love to know because this has been an issue for me when trying to improve our diet at home. My kids and I have bad eating habits but it's been a struggle for me to get them to eat healthier.
