This review isn't bad, really. But quite frankly, for beginners like me, the 1100D is fantastic. And I don't need more than it offers. Plus, it's good and cheap and Kai really tends to forget that not everyone has enough money to throw coffee on L-lenses "to test them". And you don't take pictures with your camera, but with your eye, after all.
the point he's actually making here is that you could've gotten any other better camera for the same price, and that it was useless for canon to release the 1100D with it's specs because remember, there are way better cameras for the same price.
Have the black version of this camera. I seriously don't know why they released a red version. It's not a bad camera for people who is using a DSLR for the first time.
So okay, this camera is great for beginners, or to people, who want to just casually take pictures of memories. I've had it for 3 years, I would definitely buy a new camera, but I have no money for it. This camera has taught me a lot, but to be honest, investing to a better camera would be a blast.
I agree, since I wanted to stay within the apsc line, I had the Canon Xti, to the T3, and just purchased the 70D today. This camera would be utilized as a backup camera, still good - but I wanted just a bit more.
The actual quality of your camera is largely irrelevant when learning photography; the idea behind a picture, composition, narrative, etc are FAR more important to master, and this camera is an excellent place to start. I've shot live theatre, wildlife, strobist, macro, astro, night, portrait, landscape etc with this camera and it coped fine. It accompanied my first year of AS Photography and AS Graphic Design confidently, with my work appearing in a gallery and around the campus. I've since upgraded to a 70D, but this camera has performed adequately since 2011, when I was 13/14
I have this camera (a black one) and you're right, it's fine as long as you don't expect too much from it. I used my friend's 1200D (the next model after 1100D), it's hard to go back to the 1100D. The 1200D has more video controls (resolutions, framerate) and overall takes well-balanced pictures. But I'm still using my 1100D because I'm still fine with what I can do with it. I don't shoot 1080p videos that often anyway (and really I'd rather save up for a better lens).
Man what the hell? Just help the guy with his buckets ! You just take photos of people without asking them and you didn't even help him! Rude dude spotted right there
There has to be a reason Bucket Man didn't receive any help. Is it because: 1. In Kai's world dropping shit is a key part of the livelihood? 2. There was a lesson to be learned: Straps are useless? 3. He was the clumsy star of 'BucketRev' and Kai didn't want to cramp his style?
You guys act like it's the most useless camera ever or something? If he actually tried to take a good picture besides just pointing and shooting they might actually come out good. I got it for Christmas and it is the best camera I've ever had. He probably bought it red, because mine is black.
I use my 1100d for shooting live music shows and yes, you do lose quality sometimes (in fast changing light scenarios especially) but for a budget camera it's not bad. I've been using it for almost a year now and really enjoy using it. My only issue is that extra lenses are an extra expense but saying that, if you're serious about pursuing photography, at some point you'd end up investing in extra kit anyway! - Until I can spare almost £3000 to buy a 5d plus lenses, gimble and mic, the 1100d will do just fine!
I've purchased the black T3 with an 18-55 mm IS II kit precisely four years ago (12/28/11) off Amazon. The kit lens really did limit my range but pushed me to become a much better photographer. Just yesterday, I ordered the 24 - 105 mm f/4 IS L from DigitalRev (now to ship from HK to the US) to fulfill my search for a new lens. It has been long overdue. Since before purchasing my camera kit, I knew I would upgrade my lens someday; it wasn't until approximately three years ago that I was serious about replacing. I've been interested in that particular L lens for almost two years now, and even on a crop-sensor body, I will not purely lose the advantage given on full frames. 15 mm cropped (1.6x) is equivalent 24 mm full frame; at 18 mm, it is close enough. I plan to carry the kit lens around as my secondary lens. Point is: value the lens more than the body. Movie mode on this camera is a shame. If you would like to get much out of it, find a fixed aperture lens with USM and FTM (STM is not benifical with this body). External mics cannot be attached and audio must be synced in post-pro. I've used this camera on a budget and it has taught me well. The memories captured with this cheap DSLR cannot be replaced. I'm very happy with my selection.
I have one as well, and it does fantastic as a starter. Yes, I'd much more prefer the T3i because of it's low noise performance, but I've taken pretty fantastic photos with just the T3 and my three lenses. It all comes down to skill first, money second. Even if you can't afford high-class equipment, you can learn to practice your arse off.
I just bought this camera today and I really like it. I'm not an absolute beginning photograher, but I don't have any experience with DSLR cameras. Anyway I think, that this one is really good for people, who would like to start with this hobby :)!
I had this camera until 2 weeks ago. My photos looked similar to the ones he shot here - sometimes unsharp, the background shaky, blurry, and there was just not much detail in there. I also had the same problems he mentioned. The flash is crap, and the SD card not exchangeable on a tripod. It was a great entry level camera for me to learn and play with, but after less than 1 year I already felt that it is too limited. Especially when traveling and a lot of 1 time opportunities, I thought I had the shot but then in post, it just didn't look good. I am now looking into more mid to high level cameras and invest some $$$ into good glass.
The only reason you should get blurry photos with this camera is if you're shooting in anything other than AV/TV/M, or if you're shooting with any of the three in a low light scenario with bad glass. I've got a 50mm f/1.8 II with my other lenses, so I've never had a blur issue, since the wide aperture automatically knocks the blur/shakiness right out.
Let me elaborate a little bit more: The view finder went out of focus / unsharp from time to time. Readjusting is a pain. Autofocus (for example for readjusting the view finder) is inaccurate and focusing on the wrong things, resulting in a misadjusted viewfinder or wrongly focused pictures. Video recording randomly stopped. I started recording stuff so many times just to realize the camera stopped after the first 10 seconds because I moved the camera. Especially when you don't look at the camera screen, this is highly frustrating. LCD screen colors are off and never reflect the actual picture. I also constantly had to readjust tones in post or correct the aperture. I don't know, maybe I did something horribly wrong but I just wasn't happy with what the camera gave me most of the times.
As for the viewfinder, I agree, it's a pain to fiddle with. The autofocus, however, is dependent on both the camera AND the lens, so different lenses have different accuracies and speed. Usually large aperture lenses have better autofocus. I don't do video so I don't know much about that, but I do know that in the camera's menu, there's a timed auto-shut down feature that should be changed immediately after you buy the camera (but you can do so at any time, of course). As for LCD, you get better screen quality & color with the more money you pay. The simulated exposure isn't the best on a T3. I don't know about the colours, though, because I always shoot through the viewfinder (live view slows down autofocus). It's just a camera with some faults you have to get used to. In the end, it is pretty usable. It's all I'm using and I've had a blast so far, but that's just because I've had plenty before it (broke the one prior).
That's Viet Nam, England , Germany and isreal bro. HK, scotland, Wales, France and turkey it's dog meat. I know where all the finest cuisine are In the Jet Li movie iron monkey, the cop is on the roof cooking dog meat. Hehehe
This is the camera I shoot with. I've been using it for years and I've grown into a lot of long exposure photography and timelapse. The noise isn't as bad as most would think. (check out some of my timelapses and you'll see, they're 100% unedited aside from music and scene changes). It's an alright camera, but definitely time for an upgrade. Shooting the Milky Way isn't too fun on this entry level camera.
this camera is a great start for beginners, but compared to some other models it is lacking . if you are just starting on DSLRs then this will be the perfect camera for you, however just like the guy was saying in the video, professionally, it isn't that great of a camera for the more experienced users.
Ive been a amateur photographer for over 45 years and I have the 1100D Red and its perfectly fine.I like the colour it shows a bit of individuality for the normal boring black. I even attach it to my telescope and its produces outstanding images of sunspots ,planets ,star clusters, nebulae and even spiral galaxies. The SD card is easy to access on a tripod by simply uncoupling the hot shoe with the camera attached it only takes seconds. And what camera is not unbalance with a heavy lens attached?
it all boils down to which picture style you use, what lens you use, how much light you have in the scene, the dynamic range of the scene, your ISO, etc. I've seen really nice pics taken with point-and-shoot cams and I've seen absolute garbage taken with DSLR's. Image quality is a very relative thing, one scene cannot be compared to the other
Since the 70D recently came out, I'd look into getting the 60D, as prices on that will be slowly dropping. However, the 600D is a solid camera as well, with the same sensor as the 60D in a more compact body.
I'm new to DSLR's, dont know if its for me so I have for a long time serched for a cheap alternative for me to try it out, last weekend the opportunity arrived. Bought a used Sony Alpha A230, bought it for $45 at a flea market. Has standard kit lens DT 3.5-5.6/18-55 mm SAM, both in great condition(like new), at the next table I bought a Sigma Zoom - K 1:4~5.6 70-210 mm Multi coated lens for $15, also in great condition. Went back the next day and found a Voigtländer Skopar 28-80mm 1:3.5-5.6 VMV macro and a Voigtländer Telomar 100-300 mm 1:5.6-6.7 VMV macro for another $15 for both. All the lenses works with the Sony, but how about the Canon, will they works with that? A shop near me has the 1100D for $350, should I sell the Sony and buy the Canon? I know the Sony dont do video but if I need to take a video I just use my Sony DSC-HX9V or my Samsung Galaxy S4. All in all, I've spent around $185 on the camera with 1 kit lens, 3 more lenses, lens caps, uv filters, screen protector, IR-remote, cap for the camera body, lens hoods, bag and battery charger (was missing).
What do you recommend for someone with a small budget? Video is a huge part for me especially slow motion. Do you recommend this over the d5100, or should I wait for the t3i to get cheaper
I don't know what the price was at the time of this video, but you can get this is a kit that includes the pack-in lens, a 75-300mm lens, camera bag, and high-speed 8GB SD card for $450. Considering some of the other entry levels cost $400 for just the camera and maybe a basic lens(if that, some of them come just the body) I'd say that's a good deal if you want to get into DSLRs for hobby use and not spend crap-tons of money.
Do you think so? I'm thinking about getting one for MY 14th birthday. My parents both enjoy photography, and I am thinking about joining them. What are your thoughts on it?
And by the way, did you use any special effects?? I really like quality of this video, 0:18 - 0:44 is this special effect or just a camera settings? I mean when main object is looks good, and background is kind a blur effect
Any Idea if I can plug an external screen to it while shooting? I know there is Plug for it. But can you display the live view on it and the zoom into the Image right after it has been taken? So the Model can decide upon it right at the spot where he/her is standing. After all it is her/his face winding up on wikipedia for all time, not mine.
This is shit for video.Buy a 600D,and buy an external microphone and a good wide angle lens.If you don't know what you are doing, than don't buy a DSLR.
I actually purchased the 1100D from evilBay for £255, which included the 18-55 mm lens and a 70-210 mm lens, 64 GB card and camera bag. Whilst I do agree with Kai's criticisms, I simply regard it as a camera that I can use after I abandoned my bridge camera. I don't exactly care about the build quality or the simplistic features.
I actually just bought this because it’s such a nice starter camera for us beginners to DSLR cameras. Can’t wait to get it use it and improve to upgrade to something more! Thanks for the review it made my decision on purchasing this camera easier.
Hi, Kai I have a question, how can I get gray colors when I taken pictures to silver jewelry. I use a canon rebel T3, and a macro 60mm, also i,m using a white box with white lights, all my pictures comes whit hight lights and black
you mean the 600D? it depends on the user whether they like the tilting screen or not. for me, i'd go for the D3200 personally. if i'm into the low-angle photography or videography, then i'll go for the t31 :)
You guys have to realize some if the stuff he says on here is to make funny videos to watch instead of your boring tutorial videos on here. I'm learning a lot from his videos don't be so sensitive it's your decision if you want the camera or not if it's for you to decided.
I use this camera and its great for learning , like we're not going to spend 1500 on a camera to start. Question what camera did you start on ? As well if you need to shot a video buy a nice camcorder
i just got this camera (gift from the gf) and i love it already, i had the 300D before this and i still do have it as a backup. d-rev has always been harsh when reviewing entry-level stuff. but fact of the matter is that people like me love taking picture but dont have the money for a camera with all the bells and whistles. this is a great camera especially if you're coming from a point and shoot. i def. recommend it
I think i'm getting this one, i'm a beginner photographer and don't have any experience with dslrs, this one is not very expensive and seems like a good starter camera, and I can update the lens and the lens is more important than the body, isn't it?
If your a beginner to DSLR photography i recommend you get the 1100d. For a start its cheap, it has pretty much the same features and quality as a 500d or 550d but its like £100-200 cheaper. There is no point getting an expensive pro DSLR camera because if your a beginner, you wont be using the camera to its full advantage (a waste of money) so the cheap 1100d lets you get use to the basics of DSLR photography and when your use to it, then think about upgrading.
Why didn't you help that pity guy who dropped the buckets.. ? :O
same question here ?????????
yes.... he didn't even think of helping him. if his camera falls down, everyone should stamp it.
***** lolzzz
because he's working and he just continues to work
YouriIsEenBanaan YES... correct one. :P why should he care about others?
This review isn't bad, really. But quite frankly, for beginners like me, the 1100D is fantastic. And I don't need more than it offers. So you don't help him pick up his buckets
And then you think the cat is cleaning himself when really he's asking you for a stroke?
You're obviously new to this channel haha
The Jeremy Clarkson of Cameras?

I think were in a different universe
Have the black version of this camera. I seriously don't know why they released a red version.
It's not a bad camera for people who is using a DSLR for the first time.
Looks horrible in red
Elliott W o i agree
Don't forget, Kai, for people who don't have disposable income and thousands of dollars to spend on the camera, this is a great option.
So okay, this camera is great for beginners, or to people, who want to just casually take pictures of memories. I've had it for 3 years, I would definitely buy a new camera, but I have no money for it. This camera has taught me a lot, but to be honest, investing to a better camera would be a blast.

This camera would be utilized as a backup camera, still good - but I wanted just a bit more.
Who, me? Canon eos 700d would be just perfect for my needs.
Just so you know, the t5 and the t5i are not the same thing, so the t5 will be cheaper.
It says a lot about Kai that he showed no affection whatsoever for the cat.
Karl Weaver Nah
The actual quality of your camera is largely irrelevant when learning photography; the idea behind a picture, composition, narrative, etc are FAR more important to master, and this camera is an excellent place to start. I've shot live theatre, wildlife, strobist, macro, astro, night, portrait, landscape etc with this camera and it coped fine. It accompanied my first year of AS Photography and AS Graphic Design confidently, with my work appearing in a gallery and around the campus.
I've since upgraded to a 70D, but this camera has performed adequately since 2011, when I was 13/14
every video I've watched with this guy, I get the sense that all he really says is "you're a loser if you don't have a $5000 camera".
because he want to sell all his camera with his web site and make some money
PET THE FUCKING CAT YOU HEARTLESS MONSTER
fuck you, you racist
KnifeGuy375 piss off with your lame jokes
@Emo_Redhead😂
It's a great camara for beginners, had mine for nearly 3 years and i love it
same here
Brother this camera have a unbuild mic
You didn't help that guy when he dropped that stuff it was really rude. And these people probably don't want you taking pictures of them
Who pissed in your cornflakes?
Why would you want to change the SD card while the cameras on the tripod?
I have this camera (a black one) and you're right, it's fine as long as you don't expect too much from it. I used my friend's 1200D (the next model after 1100D), it's hard to go back to the 1100D. The 1200D has more video controls (resolutions, framerate) and overall takes well-balanced pictures.

+v3xman I have the black one too
"Oh god, a guy's died" Takes picture of him then walks off, then you can see the guy move in the background xD
Man what the hell? Just help the guy with his buckets ! You just take photos of people without asking them and you didn't even help him! Rude dude spotted right there
There has to be a reason Bucket Man didn't receive any help. Is it because:
1. In Kai's world dropping shit is a key part of the livelihood?
2. There was a lesson to be learned: Straps are useless?
3. He was the clumsy star of 'BucketRev' and Kai didn't want to cramp his style?
So that gives him the right to be a douche and not help lift up the buckets? I don't care, he is a very egocentric person.
SuperAmazingJumper
Maybe he helped him, but he wasn't filmed in order to preserve his bad reputation ^^
Madraf TINTAGEL
No, he walked away clearly. Besides, this lowered his reputation
SuperAmazingJumper Thank you to confirm what I say :)
thanks. i was gping to buy it, now i will save money to invest in a higher model
You guys act like it's the most useless camera ever or something? If he actually tried to take a good picture besides just pointing and shooting they might actually come out good. I got it for Christmas and it is the best camera I've ever had. He probably bought it red, because mine is black.

I have just bought this camera, this is the only DSLR I could afford. what do I do?
Take pictures
Freddie Murry lmao.
Rodrigo Vazquez yea same rmb.. cheap camera with pro photographer does exist! :)
I am really happy now on what I have became and learned with this camera bit.ly/rodrivazquez
Rodrigo Vazquez Still have mine :) www.xiaosangwon.tumblr.com (Haven't posted in ages because of study and work)
What kind of a prick doesn't help the guy with the buckets and doesn't pat the cat?
This side of HK is not like what i see on TV... :(
I've purchased the black T3 with an 18-55 mm IS II kit precisely four years ago (12/28/11) off Amazon. The kit lens really did limit my range but pushed me to become a much better photographer. What about D5100? It fits nicely inside his $700-$750 budget.
I just bought this camera today and I really like it. I'm not an absolute beginning photograher, but I don't have any experience with DSLR cameras. Anyway I think, that this one is really good for people, who would like to start with this hobby :)!

Let me elaborate a little bit more:
The view finder went out of focus / unsharp from time to time. Readjusting is a pain.

um hate to break it to you, but un-sharp images and unintentional blurry backgrounds is an operator issue.

Cass B Yes. Check out some of my timelapses and you'll see. I have a couple of them up on RUclips. I need to post more, though.
What's the mic used in this video? The one which is on his shirt's neck, I mean. And where is it plugged?

nice photographs :D
I have this cam. . . Its solid. . . As an amateur its ok for me. ^_^
HaMeRuu compare this to an old ass 450D, the 450D towers over this 1100D, it sucks.
From the base camera with the base lense kit it comes with, about what power can you zoom to?
What mode should we put it in for the nice quality pictures? "Av","Tv"etc?
2:39 - Guy is in China and there is a bottle of Corona there. THIS WAS 9 YEARS AGO
I hate you ... with passion :)
cause i have this camera and no money to change or upgrade ....

this camera is a great start for beginners, but compared to some other models it is lacking . if you are just starting on DSLRs then this will be the perfect camera for you, however just like the guy was saying in the video, professionally, it isn't that great of a camera for the more experienced users.

What and where did you get the underscore at 5:55?

Its not the camera, is the photographer.
is there much picture difference between the canon 1100d and the canon 600d?
so whats this camera recorded this video?
it all boils down to which picture style you use, what lens you use, how much light you have in the scene, the dynamic range of the scene, your ISO, etc.
I've seen really nice pics taken with point-and-shoot cams and I've seen absolute garbage taken with DSLR's. Image quality is a very relative thing, one scene cannot be compared to the other
Is it a way that I can hookup a external microphone I'm using this to shoot videos a lot
so, can you do video settings??? please answer
I was a beginner to DSLR photography when first bought this, and I never regretted it.
Good day sir!
Is it possible to used this camera for computers, like you wanna make video calls or fb live?
Nikon D3100 or Canon EOS 1100D? I don't know what to buy.
is there anyway to manually set the video setting because the camera adjusts for the brightest spot in the room.
oh hey,i have T3
will this method, force converting 720p to 1080p decrease quality of the video?
What do you recommend for someone with a small budget? Video is a huge part for me especially slow motion. Do you recommend this over the d5100, or should I wait for the t3i to get cheaper
I don't know what the price was at the time of this video, but you can get this is a kit that includes the pack-in lens, a 75-300mm lens, camera bag, and high-speed 8GB SD card for $450. Considering some of the other entry levels cost $400 for just the camera and maybe a basic lens(if that, some of them come just the body) I'd say that's a good deal if you want to get into DSLRs for hobby use and not spend crap-tons of money.
how is that possible when the 3 wasn't even released at the time of filming?
Do you think so? I'm thinking about getting one for MY 14th birthday. My parents both enjoy photography, and I am thinking about joining them. What are your thoughts on it?
And by the way, did you use any special effects?? I really like quality of this video,
0:18 - 0:44 is this special effect or just a camera settings? I mean when main object is looks good, and background is kind a blur effect
Any Idea if I can plug an external screen to it while shooting? I know there is Plug for it. But can you display the live view on it and the zoom into the Image right after it has been taken? So the Model can decide upon it right at the spot where he/her is standing. After all it is her/his face winding up on wikipedia for all time, not mine.
wait you can still make it 1080p ? how im using vegas pro 10 to edit and u have a t3
Would this be a good camera for youtube videos? I need answers . x
yes, many youtubers have this camera.
I use it for youtube. Works great! Just get a wide angle lens.
This is shit for video.Buy a 600D,and buy an external microphone and a good wide angle lens.If you don't know what you are doing, than don't buy a DSLR.
Please Answer!
Are the Rebel T3 the same as the Canon EOS 1100D, if so why are they called different cameras?
yeah im using a t3 too =) and thanks for the tip but wont the video get stretch too much and get choppy ?
just wondering, what will canon do after they reached the 950d?
i am considering of getting one! is it good for taking pictures at night time?
Hi! great review! with witch camera did you filmed? greetz remco
Is the red one fade its color if you use it a lot??
What camera are you using for the filming of this video?
my wife gave this camera to me for christmas and i love it as a starter im very happy
Hi, Kai
I have a question, how can I get gray colors when I taken pictures to silver jewelry.
I use a canon rebel T3, and a macro 60mm, also i,m using a white box with white lights, all my pictures comes whit hight lights and black
they usually record whatever camera they are reviewing, or in case of a comparison the opposite camera (the one thats not being used in camera)
you mean the 600D? it depends on the user whether they like the tilting screen or not. for me, i'd go for the D3200 personally. if i'm into the low-angle photography or videography, then i'll go for the t31 :)
You guys have to realize some if the stuff he says on here is to make funny videos to watch instead of your boring tutorial videos on here. I'm learning a lot from his videos don't be so sensitive it's your decision if you want the camera or not if it's for you to decided.
What do you shoot these episodes with??
I took a look at your channel, is this the cam you use for the videos? if so I want this camera lol
80d or 1100d wich is the better when it comes to recording some vid?
would you prefer this one or the olympus e-prl2
I use this camera and its great for learning , like we're not going to spend 1500 on a camera to start. Question what camera did you start on ? As well if you need to shot a video buy a nice camcorder
Where did you get a red one of it? :O
how did you got the red body?
what camera were you filming with!!???
what do you use to record your videos?
i just got this camera (gift from the gf) and i love it already, i had the 300D before this and i still do have it as a backup. d-rev has always been harsh when reviewing entry-level stuff. but fact of the matter is that people like me love taking picture but dont have the money for a camera with all the bells and whistles. this is a great camera especially if you're coming from a point and shoot. i def. recommend it
I think i'm getting this one, i'm a beginner photographer and don't have any experience with dslrs, this one is not very expensive and seems like a good starter camera, and I can update the lens and the lens is more important than the body, isn't it?
Why you didn't take the black one ??
Which is better: used 550d or new 1100d?
If your a beginner to DSLR photography i recommend you get the 1100d. For a start its cheap, it has pretty much the same features and quality as a 500d or 550d but its like £100-200 cheaper. There is no point getting an expensive pro DSLR camera because if your a beginner, you wont be using the camera to its full advantage (a waste of money) so the cheap 1100d lets you get use to the basics of DSLR photography and when your use to it, then think about upgrading.
Still using this camera till date!
