I have 2 and am very pleased with them. Yes, you need to be gentle. Mine work well on battery. The thing to remember is to let them warm up for 15min or so as they drift in color and output from when you first turn them on. After that they are quite stable. I also do a custom color balance as you mentioned. Just setting the color temperature will not correct for color cast. Remember also they need to breath so when using a soft box make sure air can get in to cool the LED.
