His guitar tone during this era was absolutely phenomenal. Such an innovative sound for 1 guitarist who emerged from the punk scene and practically made his own sound with his use of extremely versatile dynamics. He’s got the chops to play metal, hardcore punk, and the tone to suit the 80’s emo cleans and low 5th barre chords that sound insanely heavy through his rig without having to conform and tune his guitar lower than E flat standard. Love it.
Everyone is focused on Roberts reaction, like he is mad. No one has thought he is at his OWN tribute concert seeing his legacy sung before him. Maybe he is a little melancholy and humbled to watch his art live on beyond his generation.
Maybe, as one of the best, if not the best, songwriters of this generation, he is slightly proud. You think? Everything doesn't have to be negative. Long live Robert Smith's lyrics!
AFI was literally the only band that night to actually respect the Cure's sound and not deviate completely from the original. That is why this cover was the best one of the night.
As fantastic as AFI "cover" was, i wouldn't feel comfortable calling it a cover done right...it sounds just like the cure! I might as well just listen to the original. In my opinion, artists should make a cover their own song.
I dunno, I would prefer a tribute cover to completely deviate from the original as it's supposed to be a band's own interpretation of the song. If you merely imitate the original then it's already clear that it won't be anywhere near the same level as it, and that you're better off just listening to the original instead. This cover is okay, but nothing special because hardly anything changed.
I cry when I see this. Davey's voice is magical. He looks absolutely divine, like an angel sent from heaven to enlighten us with his voice. AFI Fan for life!
I love The Cure and more often than not covers are never as good. In this instance though I like this version better. It sounds as though if The Cure were to write this song today or update the original version, this is EXACTLY what would come out. AFI nailed The Cure's sound with this one. Which I think was the point I might add. It is a tribute concert.
This is just perfection. Marilyn Manson is introducing it, AFI is doing a cover of one of the most beautiful songs in the world, and the singer that made the original sont is sitting in the audience. Ohhh I love AFI, The Cure and Marilyn Manson
one of the best covers that i have ever heard. stays true to the original in spirit, yet adds a touch of originality. absolute awesome performances throughout all the instruments and vocals. not a huge AFI fan, but this is ridiculously good.
I love the way Jade picks the notes during the verses. Sounds amazing and is so much fun to play on guitar. Love this band, and this song (both this and the original) is amazing.
Both of my very favorite bands have both covered one of my all time favorite songs (this one) and I can't decide which one is better. AFI was amazing but Kill Hannah made me cry sooooo
i love AFI, this cover is amazing!...the band has really departed throughout the years from their roots. Their image and sound have changed drastically over the years. but their music (albums) still holds up to all of that change. They are still very underrated "sing the sorrow" is amazing, i remember getting the album at a "K-mart" in 2003 (that's the album that got me into AFI).
He SERIOUSLY nailed it. This song by The Cure had always been one of my favorites. AFI did something amazing and wonderful with it. LOVE both of these bands. Davey couldn't have done better.
I would call The Cure's Just Like Heaven definitely in my top three favorite songs ever. I also used to listen to AFI every single day before my CD got stolen (this was before my parents invested in DSL), and I am glad to see there are bands who can cover 'classic' songs without murdering them. For those who love current covers of old songs HIMs cover of Solitary Man is epiiic.
Whether you like this cover or not, I think you got to admit, that Jade's guitar sounds absolutely amazing.
Yea it sounds perfect.
His guitar is why I hate the cover
why?
He made it an AFI remix with the hard guitar melodies

I honestly don't think anyone could cover a song by The Cure better than these four amazing men. This is wonderful.
Gold finger did an amazing punk/ska cover

@hookahjon I'll have to check this out, love Goldfinger!
I appreciate that even though some of you aren't fans of AFI can see through that and appreciate the effort put into this cover. :D

Isn't the whole point of a cover to do in in your own style?
agree
Davey’s vocals and Jades hard metal guitar melody made it deeper and darker but melodic and nostalgic.. Robert Smith loved it...
All these bands should come together now and do a recorded cure album. It would be a real piece of art
AGREE.
Y
AFI covering "Just Like Heaven" with Robert Smith in the audience, introduced by Marilyn Manson. Greatest fucking scenario ever!
So beautifully done. Smith's expressions are priceless. He seems quite moved to me.
Robert Smith standing there like a boss! Love me some AFI! What a tribute to an awesome band!!!!
Robert Smith IS the boss...
Perfect... ive listened to this cover maybe 1000 times by now.. and I still love it.
I cry when I see this. Davey's voice is magical. He looks absolutely divine, like an angel sent from heaven to enlighten us with his voice. AFI Fan for life!
Robert approves. Robert will not kill you.
Robert Smith looks super depressed about all of this, he must love it.
Great song great cover, jade with those amazing guitar sounds.
Ah I can listen to this cover over and over again 😍
Robert Smith, AFI, and Marilyn Manson in one video. Amazinggg
The guitar is more pronounced in this cover, and the vocals are amazing
AFI gets down on this jam. THis is EXACTLY how a cover should be done. Bravo Bravo!
A little distortion really added to this (already amazing) piece of music!
the whole band nails the song, absolutely love listening to this in the car......... :D
Ugh I loved AFI too and I agree that I loved the December underground look!!
And this cover is perfectly done ❤❤❤🌈
that´s more like sing the sorrow´s look...
So happy this video is still up, my mom showed me this all the time as a kid
I love The Cure and more often than not covers are never as good. In this instance though I like this version better. This is one of the greatest covers ever done. They stayed true to the song, but gave it a taste of their own. Awesome.
One of the best covers of the real thing.
both of these bands are such an inspiration on me and who I am, I want to make music as great as them one day.
“Music is the wine that fills the cup of silence.”
Suzie Franz
Sounds like a fortune cookie
Finally! A cover song worth its weight in gold...Fff your couch!
This is a great cover.
This is just perfection. Marilyn Manson is introducing it, AFI is doing a cover of one of the most beautiful songs in the world, and the singer that made the original sont is sitting in the audience. Ohhh I love AFI, The Cure and Marilyn Manson
Best Cure cover hands down!
AFI is the best band, ever.
They have super meaningful lyrics, & a great sound.
afi do the best covers. this is beautiful.
OMG I am inlove... How can someone hate this cover?
How do you keep your composure...knowing that the original band who made the song famous are sitting there watching you?
it's awesome, this from an afi fan from the 90's! love it!!!
I love the cure,I love Robert Smith but this cover is a master piece davey havoc is amazing
Amazing cover of a dope song! Bravo AFI!
This cover is amazing! :) Just the look on Robert Smith's face, you can tell he's really into too. I think I like it better than the original version.
Blasphemer!
Davey does this song beautifully!! This video just makes me HAPPY!
Davey looked so angelic.
This is beautiful, and I think this is the inspiration for sound on crash love onwards
Was that Marilyn Manson introducing them??? what is this?
+Ryan Besco Its The Cure MTV Icon, so a lot of artist perform The cure's Songs like a tribute.
Is it Chris No. 2 from AntiFlag?
I liked this! Davey was great vocally. And I'm stoked they did a tribute to one of my fav bands.
They should have recorded this cover!
This video has three of my favorite people in it! Marylin Manson, Davey Havok, and Robert Smith! All in the first 12 seconds! Hard to beat that.
Am I alone in thinking AFI's treatment of this song sounds like OMD? Tell me you can't hear them doing "If You Leave."
Oh my god yeah
This is truly just like heaven. One of my favorite bands covering another favorite.
I like it, this is a good cover but was Robert Smith giving a slow, sarcastic hand clap at the end?!
Wow, Robert Smith surely looks impressed. Really impressed!!!!!!!
Sounds like Jade has been playing this song since he was a teenager.
Omg my fave band doing a cover of my othe fave band what more could I ask for LOVE IT!!!!
Hahahah, Robert's face!
this performance is wonderful in every sense of the word
Was that Marilyn Manson at the start of the video? Awesome!
yes, MM was the host of the show MTV Icon: The Cure
James Grice hes the original singer of the song robert smith from the cure
andres sarmiento LOL
That has to be a joke right? LMAOOOO
probably the best cover version of one of my fav songs of all time....magic
Lin Lawly I kinda miss the DecemberUnderground look honestly. I think it fit them
This is sing the sorrow era. But this was them at best
Amazing, and never gets old to me. Love AFI, and I miss this AFI

graingjam wedding singer lmfao
one of the best covers i have ever listened to..
completely changed my mind about AFI
wow
did it better than the cure, Davey I am so happy to know you. :)
hell no, you are dumb as fuck
There was a place in time and it was so good that all we can hope for now is something better.
This is the only good cover of this song. Whatever you do, don't listen to the Gatsby's American Dream version. Please. It's deadly.
Thanks, now Im gonna have to go and listen to it!!!
i like the gatsbys version
I'm doing this thing where i don't take advice from some people named superderp on youtube. i hope you understand.
One of the best covers I've heard!
i thought it was a geat cover. mr. smith looks pissed
Alvaro Valdez nah he just has a resting bitch face lol
It is an amazing cover that never gets old!
Wow wow.. well, one of my dreams came true, so far!
Wow. This is amazing! I can't believe I'd never heard it before.
Robert Smith loved that cover remix with Jade’s guitar and Dave’s voice.. the best cover to that classic
:) i love the way he claps and smiles at the end. yay for the writer and the performers..
im no afi fan but this was a great cover. and yes what an honour that would have been playing it in front of the man himself
one of the best covers that i have ever heard. stays true to the original in spirit, yet adds a touch of originality. absolute awesome performances throughout all the instruments and vocals. not a huge AFI fan, but this is ridiculously good.
Damn AFI knocked it out of the park. This cover was better then i thought it was gonna be.

I have this song on a playlist I never listen to and I was playing games a bit and I heard this song :) brings back the memorys :)
this cover is the BEST that i have ever heard; AFI: great, hot band!
I love this cover !!! Rock on AFI
He SERIOUSLY nailed it. This song by The Cure had always been one of my favorites. AFI did something amazing and wonderful with it. LOVE both of these bands. Davey couldn't have done better.

Old comment
this is an awesome tribute to a great cure track.
Watching this is just like heaven.
This is so good it gave me the chills.
Better than I thought it would be! Wow!

AFI killed it! Davey was so passionate in his performance, as always.
