  • YUP, OUR BRITISH FRIEND LOST MONEY ON HIS FISH POND BUSINESS IN THE PHILIPPINES...
Times are tough for a lot of people in a lot of different lines of work right now... and "Commander Daot" unfortunately had another loss with his attempt to grow fish here in Cateel, Davao Oriental.
BUT! There was an amazing positive... actually a few!
This was another amazing experience for everyone, and Anselm will now have more skill and knowledge of the industry. Hopefully he can pull a profit in the future and continue his local business that provides jobs. Then there was an amazing husband and wife who helped buy and donate some of his catch to local front liners working at the hospital here in Cateel, Davao Oriental!
THANK YOU EVERYONE, AND ESPECIALLY RAMON AND JUDY TOLENTINO!
    POWER ON!

    Salamat sa akong mga supporter!
Actually I don't think that people were stealing the full size fish. I have security all night and this is a small community, you do not want a reputation as a thief, you will never work again
The main problem was poor technical management at the start which poisoned the water and the fish. That is probably where I lost the fish. Also said technician might well have taken a few of the juveniles. That technician is no longer here. He is also the reason it took so long to harvest! Additional labour costs and more diesel for the pump!
I probably bought double the feeds I needed. They were all used in the pond, but unnecessarily. A lot of waste. Again, technicians who don't actually know a thing. Again, not a problem now.
High costs and then a fall in price were not a good combination!
Next time will be OK because these issues will be solved!

Your dedication to making a difference in people's lives is commendable especially in remote area like Cateel. Upon watching Kyle's video, many viewers and subscribers like me, were empathetic and sympathetic of your loss. Many of the viewers offered consolation, and words of wisdom how to operate your fish farm effectively and efficiently - heed their advise. Your business is now in the open and I am sure, you will be getting a lot of customers. Your next harvest is in August, you should start contacting customers now to give you an idea who your solid customers are. A foreigner like you came to the Philippines and provided job in the community is impressive. Your fish farm location is perfect. You need a reliable vehicle with built in refrigeration to keep your fish fresh when transporting them from one town to another. Closely screen the people you're hiring. WATCH YOUR EXPENSES, that is the CULPRIT IN BUSINESS. Consider yourself as one of the employee and give yourself SALARY for personal use and treat as part of the expenses. At the end of the harvest and fish are sold, your RECEIVABLE should be bigger than your expenses, a measurement if you profited or not. I grew up in a business minded family - Mom & Pop business selling variety of merchandise in Benguet. We were peddlers too. When town fiestas are in trend, we go to different towns to sell old inventories and slow moving merchandise. Everybody is asked to help during those times. When my mother and my siblings moved to America, I enrolled in accounting class, that's where I learned the complexity of running a business. I learned that you have to have plan, type of product you want to sell, location, type of customers, where to get your inventories, where to get capital. While watching the video, a question came to mind - I was wondering, where's your family, your wife? I credit you for communicating with the people in their tongue language - a plus but at least you must have someone in your family to act as second set of eyes and ears to guide you in case there is miscommunication. If I heard it right, you experienced people took advantage of you -I am not surprised, being a foreigner, you are an easy target. Business all over the world is suffering, you're not alone. How generous of you to donate fish to the hospital front liners - very kind. Good news is, you found a friend in Kyle's capacity, along with Kumar, and the talented - Jack of all trade Mike, Mama Rose and the rest. Video is a mixture of inspiration, discomfort and disheartening at the same time, an eye opening to everyone that the World is like one giant family, when one is hurting we all come together as one unit moving to one direction - AHMAZING!

Maayong buntag Kulas. I know the feeling as a son of a farmer (in Mati, Dvo Or.) because you feel very excited about the harvest but then again you don't know the outcome (profit). buyers/middlemen will ripped you off big time. An example, back in 2014 or '15 my cousins were ready to harvest mangoes more than 2 tons and the buyers/middlemen offered them P35/kl (good quality) but the real price in Davao was P45/kl. The worst was after 2 days of harvesting, the buyers/middlemen informed them that the price went down to P30/kl even though not true and it went even down to P27/kl after the 4th day of harvest, they could not say no to the offer because they were afraid of their mangoes goes over ripe. This is all happening in the Philippines, there is no law prohibiting middlemen not to engage business directly to the farmers. Middlemen do nothing, they victimized farmers and their only capital is saliva (laway ra ang capital). I feel sorry for Anselm, losing twice in a row. But maybe he can change the selling powers in davao oriental one day. Salamat Kulas. power on. Big fan here in Vegas.

Sir Anselm , even if you dont profit at this time , my salute on you: Donated to hospital. There are people like you I admire.
Btw , a friend of mine once said , a CPA & Business mgmt. : in 1st yr you cant declare your winning or lossing at once, wait for 5 yrs. So as much as possible, ur capital is good for 5 yrs , whatever profit comes dont use for other purposes for a while , either deposit or for that business alone. So make sure also you have other means of income to live by until that business is stable. True enough it works .... so dont lost hope. 😎

Farming is tough... You really have to keep an eye on those people you put there. 500 fingerlings that's a lot! You have to be there from where you are getting it until they are release. Do not ever take your eyes on it. Like some guys said also, you must install CCTV. And during harvest time, keep an eye on those people you hire, considering where your farm is located they could easily stash and hide some. Remember these harvesters are not your regular employee. My family owns rice farm and a good friend of mine owns tilapia farm. Every season we are catching some of them thieving. During harvest my friend always ask us for help to keep an eye who is doing who. From the moment the pond started draining all the way to the weighing scales. You will be in for a big surprise! I'm not saying all of them are thieves but there a lot of them!

Just some advise for Commander D before actually harvesting your produce:
    1. Check the prevailing market price and or consider setting/moving harvest time few days down until you get a good one.
    2. Establish contacts and supply directly to big consumers like restaurants, hotels etc. by getting their orders and delivering on agreed dates.
    3. Maybe space your harvest, if possible, according to how much orders you get, not doing it in one go.
    4. Put up or install live cameras on all strategic corners of your fishpond so you can just monitor in the meantime at the comfort of your home.

I love that tv series of my childhood. I so admire Anselm for his perseverance and jumping into this business without no idea and no help. It's not an easy one he got into. But praying the next harvest of tilapia he can break even. He got you and your other friends there for support so he will make it. Get some rest kumander D, you need to recharge your batteries for the next harvest. It will be a success. As the saying goes, life is tough but kumander D is tougher. That's my motto. My experience: I'm here in L.A. so I put my uncle in charge of 4 fish ponds (5 hectares more or less, 2 hectares I bought for $25k near Dagupan City). In a one-year operation, I think I lost $10 - 15k. MY uncle and the employees were happy, and I'm the only one sad. So, I had no choice but to rent out the ones I bought for only $800/yr. I'm glad for Commander D that he lost only 500 kilos, about $1,500 and maybe double that amount during his first try, so It's about $4,500...less than 1/2 of what I lost. Anyway, he doesn't look sad and still was able to donate 150 kilos to the hospital. So, hats off to him. I'm sure he'll make it in the near future. Next year, my lease is up...in time for my retirement at 62 so I'll run the business myself. I'm sure I'll loose some in my first 2 tries but I'm positive it'll get better. It's like paying tuition fee when you're in school.

Kumander D, I think you've got a lot of positive energy. I'm sure you'll make it there. All the best to you!
