  • Never thought I would be using a $28,000 setup to remove rats. Definitely overkill but wow, what an image. They are everywhere at this place.
$4,500 FX Impact Mk3 Air Rifle in .22 cal, topped with the $23,500 Infiray RS75 1280 core thermal scope which has been kindly sent to me for a few weeks to have a play with, thanks Ben.
I am using Hades 15.89gr pellets at 630 fps which is quite slow but helps negate pass throughs and minimise any possible damage to the infrastructure. Still very effective and ethical on the rats with good shot placement.
After several visits to this property over the past 18 months I was blown away by the sheer numbers of rats that had bred back up since I was last here. The owner has tried everything including various poisons and traps but the rats prefer the grain that the poultry eat. Shooting them is by far the most effective control method.
The difficult aspect to jobs like this is shooting through small gaps in the wire cages. It's much easier when they are up on top or in the trees.

I used to rat in the neighborhood I lived in. I did it with a $159 .22 Norica Storm single-shot springer, mounted with my own brand of air rifle scope (Airscopes, which I designed for manufacture and imported from China with a simple illuminated center-dot, $29 [for me, $150 for customers]), 18 grain pellets, a porch light, and a tin of bird seed. I'd sighted the setup and just left it by the back window. I took 10 or 12 the first night and then did maintenance. It was nothing like what you were up against here.
Your setup is sorta cool, and I like that you use a rational procedure with decent weight pellets. People flake out about speed and power, and it is nice to see someone use good sense instead of fly-weight pellets and the most powerful rifle they can find. At least you are showing people some good sense. I did tech support for an airgun company and had to talk people out of going dear hunting with a .177.

Velocity in kfps-squared x 2.22 x projectile wt in grains = ft/lbs. Works from BBs to .50 BMG and beyond. The formula can be derived to determine necessary fps to tune a PCP to a desired ft/lb max as required in many nations outside the US, which has none. btw, 15.89g @900fps = 28.73+ ft/lbs. (my current goal lol) Try the formula and see if you get the same result. You can then have it in your head for any & all ballistic comparisons. Cheers.

I was getting rats in my turkey house. So I would leave only one door open, then sneak out there and shut them in - along with me and a semi-auto pellet pistol equipped with a laser light. 30 rats later, I hardly see them anymore. But it was fun while it lasted!

That cat isn't so much the resident mouser as the customs agent charged with inspecting baggage to make sure you're not bringing any more in.

I real liked this one, especially when you see the splatters. I would love to be able to have that problem of rats o plenty. Don't get much of that here in PA. Had some problems with gray squirrels. So until that time I get to shoot rats, please carry on. You do a fine job, liked you laying down on job
