    I own both , Light weight 410s, and .22LR including a Little Badger. In the warmer months I'll always carry a .22 , but in the winter I will chose the 410. When there's mutch less game to shoot at, and you are shivering and cold, the "pattern" can make a lot of difference. Even a 12ga if you have motorized transportation. Ontario Canada.

    What a great video! I had this exact question and couldn’t decide which to get. So I got a Chiappa double badger in both 22 WMR and .410. The sights on it are really good, it is dead on accurate right out the box, folds in half, and is more comfortable to fire. Downsides are that it is heavier, and doesn’t have the ability to store ammo on the unit itself.

    Love you brother but if I'm nervous I'll take the .410 . I'm thinking ill stick with a bigger shotgun. Or something in a small center fire that is a tac driver. I get survival rifle but is up to us to pick our tools for that. It's always a give and take considering the circumstance.

    • @gunsgearoutdoorsalaska5875

      Great point, a light 12 or 20 would outclass the 410. So would a little 22 hornet or 223. Would love to see some more lightweight compact guns in those chamberings.

    • @gunsgearoutdoorsalaska5875
      @gunsgearoutdoorsalaska5875  2 года назад +2

      With the 22 you will probably have to take a headshot, right through the base of the ear. A good 410 slug will take a deer sized animal with a good broadside shot through the ribs. Both close range options, but the slug requires carrying a specialized type of ammo. Could go either way.

  • @Shot_Gunner

    Nice comparison video. I’m thinking that critter at twenty yards was lucky. I also think if you were very hungry and missed like that, you’d be one sad camper.
    You are a very good shooter. The 20 yard 22mag miss is one of those “WTF was that” moments for sure.
    I’d still go for the 22mag. You have to be prepared for something bigger coming along as your only chance for food.
    Thanks for the good honest video. Stay safe out there!!

  • @timhallas4275

    The real beauty of the .410 is the variety of ammo types and their abilities. You can use anything from #9 shot for birds, 7.5 ,6 and 4 for squirrel sized critters, all the way up to 000 buck shot.... and YES a 4.10 will ethically take a small to medium deer out to 40 yards. The .22mag will not unless you are able to get a perfect head shot.

    Man, takedown 10/22s have really gotten expensive. I bought my stainless model in 2016 for like $260. 100 bucks for a Magpul Backpacker stock, some 'upgrade' spare parts, a bunch of mags and I ended up with- the best survival .22 rifle I still haven't shot. 😆

    Good comparison. If a firearm is needed to survive why not carry the extra weight and bring something more efficient. To miss with only one shot and watch dinner disappear seems unprepared. Just my thoughts, but I enjoyed the video. Keep them coming.

  • @FoulPet
    @FoulPet 2 года назад +3

    Think I'd go rifle with a poly stock and a scope on raised mount. Caliber would be 556. Big enough to take medium game. It's a common and relatively light round. Also more reliable than rimfire and better ballistics than 410. Shots would just need to be placed accurately so meat wasn't destroyed. Never been a survivalist so just based off random experiences.

    • @gunsgearoutdoorsalaska5875
      @gunsgearoutdoorsalaska5875  2 года назад +3

      CZ is making a new compact 556 bolt gun that would be pretty close to what you are describing. I agree with all your points about why 556 is the better choice.

  • @gregzeigler3850
    @gregzeigler3850 Год назад

    I'm thinking that a longer barreled .410 would have helped you better. The longer the barrel, the more powder gets burned in the barrel, thus increasing your velocity and distance to the target. TGS Outdoors had .410 shot on target at 50 yards(wouldn't have been a clean kill), but he was using a 28" barrel, too. He also, might have had a full choke. All the Rossi shotguns in .410 come with a fixed Modified choke. Winchester is kind enough to list what their various shot sizes, chokes, distance to target and game. But I also bet, they were not using 18.5" barrel. 40 yards with a modified choke on the box was the limit(shot sizes 4-8).

  • @Shannon_Robbie
    @Shannon_Robbie Год назад +2

    So the 410 might be the better choice for someone new to hunting small game.

    • @gunsgearoutdoorsalaska5875
      @gunsgearoutdoorsalaska5875  Год назад +2

      As far as shotguns go it would be as long as the critter is not flying, a beginner will probably have more fun shooting flying birds with a properly fitting and not to light 20 or a 12 because they will hit more often. A 22 rifle would be less forgiving with the fundamentals but would work well for a beginner once they have some practice, ammo is cheap and recoil is low.

  • @cuda4094
    @cuda4094 2 года назад +2

    You should do a cut shell with the 410 bird shot to simulate hunting deer. I'd rather have the 410.

  • @DirtRoadGroceryStore
    @DirtRoadGroceryStore Год назад +2

    It's not so much the pattern opening up as it is there just aren't very many pellets. Larger pellets tend to hold a pattern futher, but have more empty area inside the pattern. Shoot at a large sheet of paper to see the entire pattern.
    Winchester has a 3/4oz load of 7 1/2s that will do everything a .410 will do on small game. If you shoot several times I bet you will see that the maximum range for sure killing, not luck, is probably not much more than 20 yards. I'm thinking you don't want to depend on luck with a limited number of shots in a life or death situation.

    • @gunsgearoutdoorsalaska5875
      @gunsgearoutdoorsalaska5875  Год назад +1

      Getting closer would be better with the 410 for sure. I like 4 or 6 shot because it will generally pass through a grouse and not have a bunch of pellets stuck inside. When 410 ammo gets a little more available I would like to pattern it and find the maximum kill range like you mentioned with different loads. I buy what I find now and there is not much.

    For a walk out of the wilderness scenario, I will take an ACCURATE lightweight 22 magnum AND a pump 12 gauge. I will use the 22 magnum when the opportunity presents itself to preserve my heavy 12 gauge shells. I will use the 12 gauge for anything that flies, or anything that is an immediate threat to my life like bears or a pissed off moose. Yes the combo of both weigh a bit, but I can separate the weight and carry most on my shoulders. I would also really like to have a good buck saw, and fishing gear like tackle, and maybe a gillnet. Throw in a few traps and snare wire and a few pounds of dried food to get me by and I think in would make it. I will shoot anything that comes within 125 yards of me, and fish until I can't catch any more. I will cut down trees if I have to and roast slabs of deer, elk, caribou, bear, moose, small game, birds, and fish over my roaring bonfire. My rescuers will find me by the trail of animal carcasses, fallen trees, and the remnants of bonfires.
