So in order to get more room for lower bolt and move front drive shaft somehow out of the way, you have to flex front driver side coil and suspension. This can be done by using hi-lift jack from front bumper driverside. For opening the upper bolt you have to use combination of extensions to get it pass transfer case skid plate. Then it will open easily. Also it saves time to loosen the bolts partially then remove heat sheild. And vice-versa when putting it back.
Great video and great tips and tricks which worked for me. If you have 4 wheel drive though, remember to drop the front driveshaft. (4 15 mil. bolts) Thanks for the tutorial.
Hi friend!! near the starter, exactly on top. Is there any water hose? I have a coolant leak above the starter. Jeep JK 2008. if you know something let me know Thanks
after 5 hours of beating my head against the exhaust and the front drive shaft. I found your video. thanks a lot, I couldn't for the life of me figure out how I got two mismatched bolts in my starter. I imagine some jeep engineer somewhere thought it was funny. 2wd is way easier than 4wd
My starter it acting up a lot lately. So I am going to work on it this weekend. This will be my first DIY on my 08 JK. I’m not expecting for it to go exactly perfect but I’m hopeful that I can do it *Fingers crossed.
Just wanted to add a few helpful comments on this video. First, that hose that's in his way is actually the shifter cable. I know because after watching this video I crawled up underneath my Jeep filled with newfound knowledge and ready to take that bad starter out. I located that hose and followed it back only to find it disconnected/broken off. My Jeep was actually stuck in REVERSE and not PARK which is why it wouldn't start. New shifter cable and bushing are on the way. Now, secondly, this video is for a 2WD JK. If you've got a 4WD, you gonna have a helluva lot harder time accessing your starter with that extra drive shaft in your way.
If it had a shim in there yes. I found that some didn't have or need. But if the new starter will accommodate the shim then us or else starter teeth may misalign with flywheel upon engagement.
did u have any issues removing the bolts cause damm i tried turning it and damm they are hard..and which way did u turn the bolt it ur under the car tacing the front of the car
Nice tutorial, my starters been acting up since the day I bought my jeep almost 3 months ago. The dealership robbed me of $600 and fixed and replaced everything but my starter even though I took it in for the starter and Top Car where I bought it had it on 2 separate occasions for a total of a week and gave it back saying they fixed it but the same problem recurred within 24hrs. I'm sceptical if it's my starter or a short? I'm almost positive it's the starter when I turn the key it clicks but it works flawlessly when I take it back to the car lot where I purchased it or the dealership? ! fustrating
I removed one last night. I left the drive shaft in and it took me about an hour just to remove 2 bolts with a regular 3/8" ratchet. One click at a time... There is no reason that bottom bolt has to be that long. Click. Click. Click. Click. UGH!!
I just gotta say ... while everyone says this is an “easy job”... I totally disagree! I do many many repairs and fixes and have tons of tools. The driveshaft is totally in the way and no room to get any tools up there and get a good fix on the bolts and any room to loosen/tighten. The only thing that worked for me was an impact wrench with long extension jammed way up into the cavity & loosen the bolt (especially the 15 mm top bolt which wouldn’t loosen any other way without stripping - a flex extension DID NOT work). Other than the total PITA EGR valve, this was the most frustrating job I’ve done on a Wrangler. This video doesn’t show the driveshaft??? Different model ? Mine is a JKU 2011 Automatic and it was NOT easy.
No, I originally tried using a universal but it did not work well for me. I had to find a small rigid type ratchet with a short 3/8 drive socket. Then I made an extension handle to help break the bolt lose.

Very good video. Doing this today on daughters jeep
Spoke very clear, great demonstration.
I have been trying to get one on my '07 Wrangler, Thank you so much for posting this !!!
What happens if you dont put on the starter heat shield?
my starter just went today. might be too cold outside for me to try and do this. but I found this video very informative.
When putting it back on I can say for experience use 3 feet or so of extensions to get past the transfer case and it gets 100x easier

It's not terribly difficult, just awkward for hand and tool positions. Anyone can basically do it. You'll do great!

No instructions on dropping the front driveshaft though…

did you remove driveshaft
robert reddell that’s what I’m wanting to know... did you find out ??
no answer but I did mine with out removing. very tight, a stubby ratchet made it easier for top bolt. I did the job in 45 minutes

Did you remove the front driveshaft first to access the starter?
Nope, not at all.
Pretty helpful video, but like the one gentleman mentioned it is harder to get to the bolts on a 4wd. 🖒
Does the shim have to go back in?
Thanks that was perfect!!!
What kind of unlimited do you have?
Nice video, thumbs up!

did u use a swivel type of adapter for the top bolt
No, I originally tried using a universal but it did not work well for me. I had to find a small rigid type ratchet with a short 3/8 drive socket. Then I made an extension handle to help break the bolt lose.
peace brotha u know it...
What happens if you tighten the bottom and the middle?
BAWLS2894 may not engage (align) properly with flywheel.
