      Stacks and piles of them. 22 tons on a 185 horse Thermodyne quad tri-axle in curvy hills. 10 m.p.h. all over again. I feel the sweat popping right now.

    This is why the 13 speed was invented. God what a pain in the fucking ass. If you got both sticks in neutral you would have to stop the truck and start again.

    When I started driving I got to drive a 1961 Mack Thermodyne COE with a 18 speed Triplex transmission. Toughest dam transmission I've ever drove. Of course this tractor had a 161 horsepower engine so if you had any type of load on your were shifting a whole lot. Someone else blew the engine up in that thing, I should have giving him $100 just for the effort.

    Nice job. I am not a fan of shifting without the clutch , going thru the auxiliary gears is not difficult, but when you master going from 3rd to fourth without any grinding you got it down. I know from experience. Again you did great!

    When I was driving limos in San Diego, a fellow cabbie told me about a truck called a Triplex that it took both hands to shift. I figured it to be just curbside bullshine, like drivers are known for whipping up to help time pass. Little did I know...!

    Odd. I see the high/low range but not a splitter. I'm a bit confused where he's getting 15 from that. Aren't most a 6 speed pattern with a high/low totalling 12 or a 5 speed pattern with a high/low totalling 10. Adding a splitter to add a third layer.

    Why is it, people think it's cool to swap cogs without a clutch? If ya think crunching and clicking gears is a good look, best ya stick to an auto. And yes, it can be done.

    • @MrHarleyoldfart
      @MrHarleyoldfart 6 лет назад

      68 model pete, Have to agree with you there, so many Americans seem to think it's wrong to use the clutch, why do they think it's there? apart from pulling away, in the uk with our synchromesh boxes we always use the clutch, they don't like working without it, some of the older trucks could be shifted without the clutch, but they're mainly in preservation now.

    • @mebcool
      @mebcool 6 лет назад +4

      Here in America, manufactures have been designing transmissions for some time now to be shifted "without" the clutch.
      If you're hearing gears clicking and crunching, then YOU ARE NOT DOING IT RIGHT !
      I learned to drive using a "Double Clutch" method, but soon learn to "sync" those gears with timing and the accelerator when necessary, and I'm here to tell you, many a driver (including myself) can shift these things without so much as scratching a gear.
      If you can hear em clanking, you are doing it all wrong.

    • @rockyedwards6501
      @rockyedwards6501 5 лет назад +1

      Yep passing the test double clutch... After awhile you learn speed floating, gotta have it in a gear. Smooth, oilfield water hauler., When mech comes in meeting holding up a clutch plate and it's shiny. Somebody getting it shoved up their gear box ass
