Back in 57 that was the way trucks were. No power steering, no air, no syncros. A man's truck for sure but the ride would be a bit smoother with a load, as designed for. With no turbo, the sound of the engine is there for your listening pleasure. Up through the 70's Cummins tried to figure out why the Thermodyne got better mileage and made more power than their engine. They had many dynos running 24 hrs a day. I don't know if they ever figured it out. Nice piece of history, treat it as such.

No problem figuring out who deserves the help, the people that work. No figuring out who’s a damn legal citizen, it’s already on paper. No cutting checks or none of that headache.

Old Mack Camelback suspension will do that to you. Very nice you gave it some TLC and saved her. I would argue thou that B61’s never ever “flew by anything”. in my youth I used to watch thousands of these crawl up hills with those little engines making lots of noise and blowin black soot. God love them thou!!
I think those B series Macks are the most popular model they ever made, my dad had a 57 he bought it new he really liked those trucks. His had a Duplex TRANSMISSION.
as a kid,Bryce hill had a 1967 mack r600 tandem axle dump truck. it made runs to the gravel pit 5 days a week. it slowed for the train tracks, then I would stand and listen to it top the hill. that truck sounded so good! several years ago his daughter gave me a chance to buy it! I could not get it insured to even drive it home. I could get, I was sad and I couldn't bring myself to tell her that I couldn't get it. I thank her for the opportunity to have it, if I could of!!
I tell people mack trucks never have easy life's because they were built to work, thats why they work in garbage, quarries and hard haul. Sorry you missed your chance. @Haggerty insurance takes care of mine

Rode many mile with my father and grand father in a B61. No air ride, and it had a tri plex I've driven R models, due plex with power steering but no air conditioning, no am, fm, a CB with a external speaker. Had power but the ruff ride is indescribable couldn't imagine driving one now all day as done in the past.
In the late 1970's I saw an old B61 that had a camper built on the back. The camper was built rugged and heavy, but on the Mack it didn't matter, in fact it improved the ride. The guy installed 2 air ride seats for he & his wife. It was very cool. It was fuel efficient compared to many other R/V's. The trans was called a duplex. They also had triplex and quadraplex. Twin sticking had to be practiced to master. You also don't need to double clutch. NONE of those trans were syncro. You shift entirely without the clutch at all.

I learned to drive in a B series 5 + 4, I love to freak out the young guys that struggle with an Eaton 13 speed by sitting them in the Mack and asking them to take it for a drive after i've done a few miles. Its priceless
👍 You're probably the only one in the world that downshifts that trans without grinding , I've seen T.T. Instructors that always grind on downshifting !
I worked at an old truck junkyard when I was much younger. The owner had a few of these. I think 2 of them had factory sleeper bunks on them. One day a guy came and bought all but the tow truck version. I got that running and drove that around the yard.
Great video; I TOTALLY share your boyhood enthrallment about Mack B-Series, period! (I'm a 69 year-old Geezer) and I saw many of these beauties being used in Logging etc When they were fairly new! Learned to drive in an IHC TravelAll, have had a '61 Scout, '64 D1200 All Wheel Drive TravelAll, '64 Loadstar 1700 Decrepit Dump Truck propane V304 5/2 Trans & Axle and the Worst Air Brakes on Earth which were Rockwell non~S Cam; Without a CDL disqualified me to even drive or insure but young guys do Stoopid things at times on Rural Roads and live to tell about it. Had various 2WD pickups too. While living in ND I got an IHC KB-6 GRAIN TRUCK with Juice/HydraVac braking, a Blue Diamond 250 cid 6, and the usual 5/2 arrangement but never got it going. The K-Series IHC was beauteous in its own way too -- an aquired taste 😂. Was also a "Ford Man"-- that '57 you have in the Background is FAR sweeter than the one I had -- but as a kid of 16, that 223 I-6 surely saved me from the tickets my Compadres got with their Catalinas, Chargers and such 😂. Yuppers. Had more recently a 12-valve Cummins Dodge for a Half Million miles, (without Banks/Harley exhaust) that I had to repair in ND. Cut the half-plugged Catalytic Converter off, adapted up to 4 inches and put a 4"in/5"out Bus Muffler and a 5" 45° Elbow... for less than ½ the cost of the OEM Parts-- very mellow at the Stoplights, but pulling a load at 1,200RPM, there was a Bulldog tone there so I improved/improvised a Mack Bulldog rubber part like a Spray Flap right over the Dodge lettered tailgate 😂. But I could hear that Turbocharger singing away in the Cab... Later began using Schaefer's EP Moly with my Delvac 15-40 Motor Oil-- and the Turbo gave off a low-pitched whistle at IDLE-- everything was happy under the hood-- YESSIRREE.
Absolutely awesome rig! My first job out of high school was at a trucking company/truck repair shop and I had to use the "yard bird" (B 61 Mack) to jockey trailers in and out of the shop. It whupped my but, but I fell in love with her. Great job!

Thats a 673 P NA motor. The twin intakes on the block giving it a little 200 hp. I have one in my truck that im restoring but compared to the single piece intake makes around 180 hp NA as well. With that Uni-shift transmission as well to even any of these transmissions, you don't actually clutch when you shift you feel it into gear. It actually tears the clutch up and after a while you'll end up changing the clutch out. Just a FYI
Yeah it's called floating gears, basically when you shift out of gear you only let off the throttle enough to drop your RPM to where it needs to be for the next gear to engage. If you double clutch all the time it'll burn up your throwout bearing. Love the truck btw

Triple stick is the best way to learn. B61's still ARE work horses, don't care about the HP, it's about the torque and the work they did. Awesome trucks the B61's are. Shame you don't have the original fuel tanks but, it is what it is. Cheers :)

Awesome truck. When I first started driving in the early 90’s, I drove a roll off and the owner had a bunch of R model Macks, some DM model Macks, and two 1960 B61 Macks. I made it a point to learn how to shift them and actually drove one on a regular basis. Now, I drive for UPS and I drive a Mack Pinnacle. Nothing beats the old B Models.
Love B Models. I remember them being in use when I was a kid. A few years ago I came across a B Model Wrecker in NJ. It had a Quad Box and I have to say a Thermodyne engine. I wished I had the money to buy it and restore it. Thanks for posting this and thanks for everyone who is keeping these great trucks for us to see.
My dad had this same truck as a chip truck ( hog fuel) stretched frame live bottom tandem axles .. best part was canary yellow paint he loved that truck

Cool, 1957 the year I was born. Had an uncle who drove this truck back in the day. His stories, and my riding with him gave me the trucking bug. Retired last year with 32 years of road time. Favorite truck was a twin stick Mack. Love these old trucks and your video.

@@Jeepdriver75 and one hell of a rugged SOB , I drove a 76’ DM800 with the 300 and the 15/spd tri-plex #55,000 bogies, she wasn’t fast but man would it pull. No fiberglass in that body, butterfly hood, all steel.

I’m looking at buying a b 57 Mack with the thermodyne diesel from where I work. It’s been stored inside for 20 years. It’s a the wheeled dump truck also.
Modern Trucks have 3 layers of air suspension between the driver. Air bags on the axles, air bags between the cab and frame, and then air suspension on the seats.
I know where there’s a B61 tow truck that’s been sitting for many years. It’s pretty accessible, no trees growing through it. Somebody needs to do something with it.
I took an old B-61 Mack and made it to pull my wifes and my 35'fifthwheel put a small cat engine and a ten speed road ranger transmissions air ride sets air bag suspension it was a head Turner
Looking at the engine again that's either a 673 P or a 711, and with the wiper motor mounted under the hood I'm guessing a truck is newer than a 57. What's the serial number if you don't mind me asking?

I learned how to drive in a 1960 Mack b61... we had one on our family farm back in the 1970s... Here I am now 62 and still driving a truck.
I used to ride with my uncle in his GMCs in the 60s. On every trip I would see B61s and wish I was riding in aB61.

I always love these old Mack Trucks. When I was a kid I would see them all the time on the highway.
Had a B61 with a Triplex, hauled a lot of cottonseed and cotton bales during gin season! Cool truck.

I started with a 1959 H model Mack. I’ve never seen anyone dumb enough. To stick they’re arm through the steering wheel.

We used to get concrete from a fleet of them in tandem and triaxle configurations with separate Jaeger drive engines for the mixer.

Not sure the exact reason, but the Mack Thermodyne engine has a unique sound among other 4cycle 6cyl...I too have loved that from childhood days.
Rick Johnson like the 237 and 300, nothing sounds like them.
Alll Mack engines have a different sound most mechanics can stand blind folded and tell a Mack engine going by or taking off.

I’m looking at buying a b 57 Mack with the thermodyne diesel from where I work. It’s been stored inside for 20 years. It’s a the wheeled dump truck also.

Would the engine be called a Thermodyne because the radiator grille is "thermo dynamic"? I think I've heard of a Maxidyne too.

Modern Trucks have 3 layers of air suspension between the driver. Air bags on the axles, air bags between the cab and frame, and then air suspension on the seats.

I know where there’s a B61 tow truck that’s been sitting for many years. It’s pretty accessible, no trees growing through it. Somebody needs to do something with it.

I took an old B-61 Mack and made it to pull my wifes and my 35'fifthwheel put a small cat engine and a ten speed road ranger transmissions air ride sets air bag suspension it was a head Turner

Nice truck. Should throw a flat deck on it besides being able to use it instead of looking at it the extra weight would calm down rear suspension

Looking at the engine again that's either a 673 P or a 711, and with the wiper motor mounted under the hood I'm guessing a truck is newer than a 57. What's the serial number if you don't mind me asking?

Axel is still original, we updated it with same suspension style as a early 90s mack
