    Years ago, I worked with a man who owned a B30 that made the same conversion (Mack gas engine, to Detroit 6v53). Was contracted to a couple of local construction companies, to do all of their maintenance. Told me that the Detroit was the only engine he could find to replace the old gas engine, & needed to get the truck back to work fast.

      Possibly Nissan made some 2 strokes way back but the UD trucks and the Nissan diesel in the IH Scout that I'm familiar with were all 4 stroke. Other than Detroit Diesel and some obscure engines most diesels are 4 stroke.@@Aaron-be2pt

      My first job out of school in 1967 was in an Internation Harvester dealership. In Australia, the F 1800 Loadstar was offered with a V345 petrol engine, 5 speed manual with a 2 speed auxiliary gearbox and bogey drive. The F1800D then came along with a V6-53 Detroit with an Allison 6-speed auto, and bogey drive. There were no single rear axles in the Australian Loadstar. Both were excellent trucks for Australian applications in the day.

    That's a beauty there, in my mechanical demolition day we had a twin axle b, it was an army surplus boom truck with the big Theromdyne straight 6 gas, I ran that truck for years because nobody else could get the idea of it always being in some gear or pto and using the air clutch when working the winch outside.

    One thing that was really good about this kind of conversion was that the Jimmy and Ally were just about foolproof, when literally anybody might need to drive the truck, such as a floater truck on a construction site. I've worked for a number of contractors that had all of their job trucks 2-ton and larger set up this way.

    Way back when I first got my license I worked part time for a company that had one of those with a dump body on it, the original gas engine was long gone and someone had put an early 60's Ford 240 straight six gas engine in it. They basically just used the truck as a trash dumpster off the end of the loading dock. It became my job on Sat. mornings to drive it to the dump and empty it for the coming week. The motor ran fine, it actually felt okay driving it but I think the trans was out of what ever the motor came from, so it had a top speed of about 35 mph, which was probably a good thing since most of its brakes didn't work. Mashing on the brake pedal was more of a suggestion than a command for it to stop but once you got used to it, it was very possible to drive it around with limited stopping ability and the Ford motor. The best part was the plywood floors in the truck, the floors were either rusted away or cut out for access and you had a 20x20" piece of plywood held to a few floor supports with wire ties to put your feet on, the rest of the floor was wide open to the driveshaft and road below.
    Driving it on dusty roads got interesting to say the least. More than once i got in it and found something sleeping in the cab, all sorts of critters would climb up into the cab in the winter. Including a neighborhood dog, a 190lb Newfoundland mix. He thought it was his truck. The best part was that if the dog was in there, you didn't have to worry about any possums or raccoons. After a while he also kept most other drivers out of it too.

    @SK-tr9ii 7 месяцев назад +2

    The truck looks like a B42 but I've never seen that type of air cleaner or a recessed fender before. At least the one I owned was different. I'm curious as to why you think that it had a dump box that was modified to be a flat bed. The bed looks typical of the day, especially with the wood floor. Being it was owned by an asphalt company it more than likely doesn't have that much road time on it. It was probably used to haul crew equipment to the site and spent more time sitting than working. That would be normal for an early sixties gas equipped truck and its general condition would support that theory. Looks like a great resto project.

    About that underpowered 6V53. I don't know if it would fit what with with the turbo and all the associated extra plumbing, but the U.S military have some M113 Armored Personal Carriers with 6V53's that are rated at 450 hp! If you could find one of those engines at a government surplus auction and make it fit that would really liven up that old B Model!

    O-H-I-O Porter greetings 🇺🇸 I have to say that the engine doesn’t sound like a 6V53, but it does sound good. How does it run with that automatic transmission? You’re RIGHT, it would be quite a cool truck to drive & it would sure make people wonder what was under the hood! I was shocked that it started with only 1 battery, but maybe those engines weren’t too hard to crank over. I would love to see that thing roll out on the road! I’m in the process of rebuilding a 51 REO & it might get an old Detroit engine as well. Not sure yet. Blessings & enjoy that truck! 🥰😎✌️

He always carried a roll cab of tools where the passenger seat would sit . While they were unloading and reloading he pulled the head and pan , did the pistons and sleeves, bearing roll and was ready to go by the time they had his load on
