I use marine grade 8D batteries and 4/0 cables to start my 6V71 in a 750 CFM air compressor. Group 31 batteries can do it, but they don't live long in a cabinet running at over 200 degrees F.

I have the twin to this truck bought from the same guy. Had to rebuild the motor right away because he didn’t change liner seals when it got rebuilt. Luckily our frame is in a little bit better shape. We were able to split the rails and clean the rust out between them. We had same cracks in the truniun crossmember but ours is Hendrickson springs. Had to rebuild all that. Turned into more of a project than we thought but it goes good and is a fun truck to drive. No air throttle on ours & 18 speed Mack trans

Those are not block heaters. They are oil heaters so that the engine can start and go online in less than 7 seconds. It is an emergency Backup Generator. Probably can from a hospital or a computer facility.

It’s amazing how much engine it takes to turn a generator. She runs like a champ bro!

Nothing better than a V12 blazing away, Well I think there is. A 6V53 running at 3200 rpm with no intake nor exhaust system but straight out the manifolds. Your chest, skin and hair just vibrate and crawls. This comes in a close second though. As an apprentice mechanic, we had a fleet of Kuruna trucks with these 12v71tt's. They were upgraded to these from twin Volvo engines and Allison trans. Charging up a one in 8-9 incline fully loaded underground was a sublime sound. Nothing like it, simply music to the ears.

I worked the offshore oilfields for yrs the older rigs often had 6,8,& 12/71 Detroit's along with 1710 Cummins - I saw them every were on older rigs - they were also many that were dedicate to handle the Mercury vapor lighting loads - there would be 1000 watt mercury vapor lights all over a platform in the 1970s and 80s - I had worked on generators off shore for yrs - the turbo units burned about 700 gallons of fuel a day - The none turbo charged were around 500 HP and the turbo u it's were 750 HP or so - they put out 416 watts per HP - There were 1200 rpm units the we're about 500 HP and the 1800 rpm units were 750 HP or so - The 1200 rpm units were rebuilt every 24000 hrs and the 1800 RPM units were rebuilt every 16000 hrs - Most of the problems with structures on the water is weight - So those are light weight and powerful - the platform legs are used for fuel storage and have several hundred thousand gallon of fuel in them - do fuel weight doesn't matter - Cummins and cats are better engines but power to weight the Detroit's and EMDs are better choice but burn more fuel - One gallon of fuel generated 3 kw with a Detroit's & 1 gal of fuel in a 4 cycle generated 4 kw of power -

Emergency generators for schools, hospitals and the like lead a sheltered and happy life. Like fire engines, usually impeccably maintained. One of my hospitals has 3 16 cylinder Cat generators lined up in a room. I was in there one hot summer day when they started them for load shaving. All three go to full governed RPM and the transfer switches put on the load within 10 seconds. I thought I went to heaven.

Set up right they start and go right up to 1800. Unless you are in europe, then they go right to 1500

Tuning fuel into noise
