Emergency generators for schools, hospitals and the like lead a sheltered and happy life. Like fire engines, usually impeccably maintained. One of my hospitals has 3 16 cylinder Cat generators lined up in a room. I was in there one hot summer day when they started them for load shaving. All three go to full governed RPM and the transfer switches put on the load within 10 seconds. I thought I went to heaven.
Nothing better than a V12 blazing away, Well I think there is. A 6V53 running at 3200 rpm with no intake nor exhaust system but straight out the manifolds. Your chest, skin and hair just vibrate and crawls. This comes in a close second though. As an apprentice mechanic, we had a fleet of Kuruna trucks with these 12v71tt's. They were upgraded to these from twin Volvo engines and Allison trans. Charging up a one in 8-9 incline fully loaded underground was a sublime sound. Nothing like it, simply music to the ears.
a hospital near me(new milford, ct.) has a v20 two stroke stand by generator. when it is running it can be heard for miles. i feel for the rest home residents next door.
To clarify for those who aren't familiar -- Zack poured some penetrating fluid (I'd use ATF+acetone, it's better than most penetrant brands IMO) into a cylinder. He made a fitting for the glow plug hole. He then hooked up a porta power up to it and hit it with a couple thousand PSI. Fluid seeped past the rings until the rusty hog cranked a quarter turn. Probably the best way I've ever seen to crank a stuck engine. Was really smart on his part. I don't think an air hammer will work on these big of cylinders lol
Best sounding engine ! Good you saved it , that’s basically new , and would be good for literally tens of thousands of hours . Remember when I was in high school our forestry class went to a logging site where they had a 12v71 in the hauler - wow it sounded awesome . I have several 8v71s and a 671 gen , a v12 is on the to find list .
I am a retired electrician from a water utility on Long Island. We had many of these old gensets. The unit you are working on was probably wired to an ATS. Find the pair of wires that would have been used to start the engine. There should be a cranking relay and overcrank time out stepper in the control head.
It also could have come out of an old Telephone Company office. Back in the day they needed 99.999 percent uptime and the batteries would only keep stuff going for 30-90 minutes in a big office and the Jenny would have to have the ability to run for weeks in a worse case scenario, like a hurricane recovery. They would also have time to get more fuel. Today’s Jennys are multi fuel, propane, natural gas and maybe diesel or gasoline. And also it was switched out due to age of the generator. Also the site may not need as much power to run, like solid state vs relays or computer vs even the old relay or solid state stuff. Even my power usage for my home has decreased, not counting my heat.😢😢😢 73’s from Sherman NY DE N2JYG
I worked the offshore oilfields for yrs the older rigs often had 6,8,& 12/71 Detroit's along with 1710 Cummins - I saw them every were on older rigs - they were also many that were dedicate to handle the Mercury vapor lighting loads - there would be 1000 watt mercury vapor lights all over a platform in the 1970s and 80s - I had worked on generators off shore for yrs - the turbo units burned about 700 gallons of fuel a day - The none turbo charged were around 500 HP and the turbo u it's were 750 HP or so - they put out 416 watts per HP - There were 1200 rpm units the we're about 500 HP and the 1800 rpm units were 750 HP or so - The 1200 rpm units were rebuilt every 24000 hrs and the 1800 RPM units were rebuilt every 16000 hrs - Most of the problems with structures on the water is weight - So those are light weight and powerful - the platform legs are used for fuel storage and have several hundred thousand gallon of fuel in them - do fuel weight doesn't matter - Cummins and cats are better engines but power to weight the Detroit's and EMDs are better choice but burn more fuel - One gallon of fuel generated 3 kw with a Detroit's & 1 gal of fuel in a 4 cycle generated 4 kw of power -
I use marine grade 8D batteries and 4/0 cables to start my 6V71 in a 750 CFM air compressor. Group 31 batteries can do it, but they don't live long in a cabinet running at over 200 degrees F.
Don’t think it would be a TT. if I’m not mistaken the TT engines are only used in vehicle and marine applications, don’t think they were used in generators so this would likely be just a standard 12v71T. Could be wrong though. I do see people all the time thinking TT means twin turbo but it does not it means Tailored Torque aka the “fuel squeezer”. Wether it’s single or twin turbo the engines designation remains as a “T” or TA if it’s got a aftercooler
That more than likely a wood something govenor on the engine. Can’t remember the name now. Engine runs at 1800 rpm. And more likely runs at 0 drop and 60 hz setting. Which means it will not change from 1800 rpm no matter how much load you throw at it. Great engine will run forever. Detroit diesel will run full load forever. They love to work. Where Cat And Cummins can’t run full load for ever. That’s why all the mines up north used to run Detroit. They last forever. Great engine. Loved working on them back in the 70’s and 80’s Good luck
Those are not block heaters. They are oil heaters so that the engine can start and go online in less than 7 seconds. It is an emergency Backup Generator. Probably can from a hospital or a computer facility.
You really should get that hooked up,big fuel tank and. When the government turns off everyone power..you can power up your whole neighborhood...and they do plan to shut off everyone's power, including yours....

Nothing sweeter than a Detroit when it runs perfectly. Takes me back to the days.
Perfect for running this year's display of Christmas lights!
It’s amazing how much engine it takes to turn a generator. She runs like a champ bro!
I love the sound of a detroit sweet sweet music

That's a high regulation variable speed governor.
Engine sounds great!

The residence next-door can be happy that they have heat and electricity
Cool
Sounds great
That Detroit is GOLDEN !💯👌
Use much bigger batterries. Those little ones will work but when its really cold you need bigger ones
for that stuck cummins, try hooking up a porta-power to one cylinder like zack-life does!
it'll turn or break for sure!

Sounds good, no smoke on a 40 degree cold start. She’s in excellent condition.
That will make a truck sound great
The sweet sound of a 12 cyl. Detroit. Wow.
Awesome find
Your one flapper is staying open better fix before it rains or snows dont want that getting into the engine lol good video .
Pretty big muffler that would have to fill up a bit first. 😂😂 But yes I will be taking care of that.
That gen's got a ton of life left in it.
The bladder you are talking about is called a day tanl
Cant go wrong with a New 12V71.
What a beauty!

I worked the offshore oilfields for yrs the older rigs often had 6,8,& 12/71 Detroit's along with 1710 Cummins -
I saw them every were on older rigs - they were also many that were dedicate to handle the Mercury vapor lighting loads - there would be 1000 watt mercury vapor lights all over a platform in the 1970s and 80s -
I had worked on generators off shore for yrs - the turbo units burned about 700 gallons of fuel a day -
The none turbo charged were around 500 HP and the turbo u it's were 750 HP or so - they put out 416 watts per HP -
There were 1200 rpm units the we're about 500 HP and the 1800 rpm units were 750 HP or so -
The 1200 rpm units were rebuilt every 24000 hrs and the 1800 RPM units were rebuilt every 16000 hrs -
Most of the problems with structures on the water is weight -
So those are light weight and powerful - the platform legs are used for fuel storage and have several hundred thousand gallon of fuel in them - do fuel weight doesn't matter - Cummins and cats are better engines but power to weight the Detroit's and EMDs are better choice but burn more fuel -
One gallon of fuel generated 3 kw with a Detroit's & 1 gal of fuel in a 4 cycle generated 4 kw of power -
In the old days they had those ski hills would use them
Oh my god It Sounds amazing this Exotic motor needs some Wheels 😊 or Boat
This is a keeper

Cool good score mate well done
Look at that beast
"This radiator is as tall as me and I'm..."
*Interior monologue* 5'10"
"6'4"
Looks like a good mobile Tesla charger to me 😂
Very cool!
Put it in that Brockway!
I want that in my car

Todays chinese crap wont last as long as this! Not even a quarter.
Stuff that bad boy in a brockway truck restoration 😊
Won't fit unless you stretch the frame or move the cab back. But it would be cool!
10 out of 10 for the music r u in New York

I say put it in a Brockway restoration!
Put the 1271 in the Brockway
So how many kva is the Turbine. should be big for 12V71 tt super on it.
Run time for 700 hours is 29 days ish.
Thirsty machine.
The speed controller is not working. Its that blue box up front on the engine. It should have ramped up to 1800 rpm.
I know. I disconnected it to avoid it jumping up to full rpm upon start up.
What size injectors ( H.P.) .what is k.w. of generator?❤
400kw. Not sure injector size.
Heck I only need a 40 kw generator for my home. A single phase 120/240 60 hz. That would even handle the electric heat.

@@franklinwerren7684 I have same v-12 genset load tested it drank about 3 gallons of fuel in about 5 minutes
In the old days they had those old girls running ski hills because there was no power anywhere near them
Theres truckers looking for 12 cycliders for cab overs
Yes but you need a truck engine to Robb key parts from😮
Ever heard of a penetrating oil? Just on it with vice grips? Wow....
Yes, I did spray it before I started it. But didn't show it in the video
U yanks have so much old stuff for fuck all that will run perfect
Sell it to me

Why? Your rock music, is so much louder than your voice. For people that use head phones that is really bad
