That classic lineup of Elton, Davey, Dee and Nigel (plus Bernie, who was basically an equal in the group) was a powerhouse. There was an incredible chemistry between those musicians. Nice to see Davey stepping out of the shadows to tell his story.
Bernie was an equal? That's laughable and ridiculous. There are thousands of greeting card writers and books in Barnes and Nobles with writers as good or better than Bernie. Does Bernie play an instrument or have vocal ability? Nope. Only EJ fan wannabes like you would say such a thing.
He will likely never get the credit he deserves for creating the sound around Elton. He is certainly one of the most talented musicians in the last 50 years. He is an incredible guitarist but his real talent is fleshing out the song with the embellishments he add. Genius!
Absolutely! He is definitely the ‘X’ factor in making the Elton John Band sound through the years. It just wouldn’t be the same without him. Likewise, Cat Stevens had Alun Davies, Buck Owens had Don Rich, Tom Petty had Mike Campbell, Jim Croce had Maury Muehleisen and so on. Well, Elton can certainly be thankful he had Davey Johnstone!

Totally agree with this thread. He figured out how to play guitar for a piano centric artist. This is very different than playing for one of those classic bands where it’s all about the guitars.

So important to Elton John's sound. Davey gives many songs a rock music backbone. Elton John always had the knack at grabbing the best players available. Often the ones who a keepers for your whole career.

Davey I was only 10 yrs old in "73" when I discovered Yellowbrick Road and as much as I was fascinated with Elton, I always had a thing for guitars and i knew your playing was great and distinctive and I remember reading at the bottom of they printed lyrics where you were playing banjo and other instrument.........love the way you play unto this day.....
This gentleman is directly responsible for my life and career. Retired Audio Engineer, nominations awards, whenever I saw a concert, always glued to he and Nigel. “Hotel California “ is very good,……but,,, YBR is Stratosphere.

I remember being at an Elton show in Toronto for GYBR tour in 74 , 2nd row and my eyes were closed enjoying a song, when I opened them Davey was looking right at me smiling. I was so in love with that band and that is such a simple gesture but have always thought that is a great musician knowing he reached us that way.
I'm a very fan since i was 10, when i bought Capitan Fantastic album... He made Elton and Bernie's song more beautiful than it was....thank vou, Davey!!
I’ve admired his abilities as an excellent guitarist/musician for decades. Though he’s not a household name he’s always been the guy who really knows the importance of the old cliche about serving the song. I can’t think of another Rock/Pop player who has done it better. I’m glad to have finally gotten to see and enjoy an interview with him.
I'll never forget seeing Davey in a combat jacket playing with Noel Murphy in a pub in the Commercial Road, Barking (East London). Noel took a break and left Davey to play a banjo tune and we all had jaws on the floor - never saw anything like it.
I still can’t believe I seen Davey when he was Alice Coopers lead guitarist and band leader in the late 70’s. There isn’t anything this guy can’t play I think….👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Great story from a really nice guy, and ultimate professional guitarist. Should have 100,000,000 views. Davey is one of my sole reasons for ever picking up a guitar and learning rock and roll songs. He created the guitar parts to all those songs, from the obvious, I'm still standing, to the 'more suble', Seen that movie too'. 'Composer' as well as techical player, and one hell of an band mate. (perfect)
I idolised Elton John in my teenage years and Davy was my first introduction the instrument I later came to love I remember riding my bike in London one day and on Kensington church St I slowed down for this car pulling out and I recognised Davy in the back seat I sat up pointed at him he looked and I just pretended I was strumming a guitar at him me smiled and I gave him the thumbs up i probably made his day and he totally deserved it, years before I met Chris Simpson at a folk club and chatted about Davy I ve always loved his playing and hearing his acoustic work on Madman is still haunting especially the mandolin outro on Holiday Inn brilliant player !!
I stared at this guy for years as a kid on the albums. Don’t know why. He looked cool. He looked strange. He frickin rocked. This is the first time I’ve heard him speak. Great interview! Davey belongs to that rare group of top flight guitarists who were never just “guitar players”. Others that spring to mind are Mike Campbell and Nils Lofgren.
I really enjoyed this Interview with Davey Johnstone, very Insightful, a really fantastic player, his acoustic playing is also superb, I also love the work he did with Magna Carta.
Davey's memory is confused about the tracks that he did with Dave Cox - Roger Pope was the drummer on Tiny Dancer. Davey also played on Holiday Inn which Roger played on. Roger also played on Razor Face ...........and those three numbers were done in one session after Roger had being doing a day job in Southampton laying main drainage pipes.....then drove to London covered in cement ............and played the sessions, with the sweat hardening the cement as he played!!
Got the privilege to see him play last night at Elton johns farewell tour. Blown away! Amazing guitarist and has made me want to pick up my guitar again. Icon. 🎸

I just picked up on something. The Beatles, Stones, Davey and many others have all studied art and they are great musicians. Strange that pattern of quality.
I recall in a 1974 interview before his Montreal show in which Elton talked about how much he valued and identified with the band, and valued Bernie much more than just as a lyricist. He was harsh in his firing of Nigel & Dee, but he was apparently much more generous with his creative help than most singer songwriters. It was a delight finally hearing from Davey on the making of GYBR DVD describing the work involved, and great to see him here.
This interview with him was AWESOME !!!! what a great guy Mr. Johnstown is -humble guy , and such great wisdom from an Uber-talented guy that walk the walk !! As a piano player myself , I’ve seen Elton in concert like 3 times in my life -incredible - but just as talented and amazing is the entire band. What a great interview !! Keep on rocking , you guys !

Great interview, and a great guy as everyone here has mentioned, I was fortunate enough to meet him in the late seventies when I lived in LA in my late teens. I also feel blessed to have been invited to his wedding in the late seventies also, in was in his home in the Hollywood Hills with Gold & Platinum albums on the walls which I’ll never forget, it’s kinda funny but the girl he married then used to be a dancer for Alice Cooper and that’s how they met I was told, amazingly the woman I married 40 years ago was his new brides cousin that I didn’t know at the time. I still have a polaroid picture of him & I playing guitars in the living room of his new father in law’s house in Montebello, CA. Good times back then, again what a super nice guy, nice to hear his voice again, great interview!
Met Davey a few times in our home city Edinburgh back in the late 60s. A great natural guitarist and a great guy. He, the band and Elton, were absolutely superb at Elton’s highlight performance at Glastonbury in June 2023. Be really interested to know what Davey will work on now that Elton is finally retiring. I’m sure he’ll be outstanding at whatever he chooses. Oh, and I’m sure he’s still a great Hibs supporter back in old Edinburgh !! 🙋♂️👏👏👏👏🎼🏴

I met Davey once and he was incredibly nice and friendly. A gentleman and a professional.

He was harsh in his firing of Nigel & Dee, but he was apparently much more generous with his creative help than most singer songwriters. It was a delight finally hearing from Davey on the making of GYBR DVD describing the work involved, and great to see him here.

As a piano player myself , I’ve seen Elton in concert like 3 times in my life -incredible - but just as talented and amazing is the entire band. What a great interview !! Keep on rocking , you guys !

Great interview, and a great guy as everyone here has mentioned, I was fortunate enough to meet him in the late seventies when I lived in LA in my late teens. I also feel blessed to have been invited to his wedding in the late seventies also, in was in his home in the Hollywood Hills with Gold & Platinum albums on the walls which I’ll never forget, it’s kinda funny but the girl he married then used to be a dancer for Alice Cooper and that’s how they met I was told, amazingly the woman I married 40 years ago was his new brides cousin that I didn’t know at the time. I still have a polaroid picture of him & I playing guitars in the living room of his new father in law’s house in Montebello, CA. Good times back then, again what a super nice guy, nice to hear his voice again, great interview!

Met Davey a few times in our home city Edinburgh back in the late 60s. A great natural guitarist and a great guy. He, the band and Elton, were absolutely superb at Elton’s highlight performance at Glastonbury in June 2023.
Be really interested to know what Davey will work on now that Elton is finally retiring. I’m sure he’ll be outstanding at whatever he chooses.
Oh, and I’m sure he’s still a great Hibs supporter back in old Edinburgh !! 🙋♂️👏👏👏👏🎼🏴
