  • In 2001 the TV documentary 'Wingspan' was released, which gave an overview of Paul's early solo career and his adventures with Wings.
    Paul was interviewed by his daughter Mary McCartney. The interview was recorded on 13/14 February 2001 at the House of the Redeemer, New York.
    Over 20 minutes of extra interview footage (not used in the main documentary) was included as an extra when Wingspan was issued on DVD.
    I've posted these in short clips on my channel over the past few months. I've had requests to post them all in full, so here you are.
    Enjoy!

    Hey Mary…your dad is one of the greatest men to have graced our planet. Is easily one of the most talented and gifted songwriters in HISTORY. There will be statues of this man, and his name ranks amongst the greatest artists of all time like Beethoven, Shakespeare, Mozart, Picasso…
    He is a living legend. And people will speak of him 200 years from now and beyond!!
    Your dad and family are a gift from heaven. Thank you!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻

      @AT-yg4nk 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@neeni4 I know, and that’s crazy that she’ll never look at her dad quite the same way as the rest of the world.
      Sean Lennon said that he didn’t understand what the big deal was about his dad until after his dad’s passing and he became older. He knew who The Beatles were but he didn’t understand their significance, their legendary status and how truly famous they were.

    • @neeni4
      @neeni4 9 месяцев назад

      @@AT-yg4nk kids don’t need famous parents, they just them to be there. No one’s parent is anymore special because of fame or money. Same goes for a famous kid. Daniel Radcliffe (for example) has his feet firmly on the ground because his folks and family never tolerated any notion that he was ‘special’. I think Brits and Aussies are generally much better at remaining normal people, whereas Yanks get worshipped to the point of mental illness and drug addiction.

    1975, Atlanta, GA., USA - WINGS OVER AMERICA - I and my best friend met the band (minus Paul, Linda and Joe) at dinner atop the hotel next to the Omni Auditorium. Later at the concert I vibrated from my cheap assigned seat walked around the floor near the stage and saw a whole aisle of empty seats. Being a curious and knowledgeable Mcgeek I noticed that the filled row just in front of the vacant one sat P & L's whole family+nanny holding future famous celeb designer Stella McCartney. So, I quietly slipped into the empty seat on the aisle just behind the beautiful interviewer you're watching right now. Long comment longer, I knew why the seats were empty and I now had a 'PREMIUM' seat to enjoy two shows. Interestingly, Mary had more fun interacting with me than her boring old parents.
    I knew there had to be other body guards surreptitiously checking me out but nobody said a word. I was conciously redirecting other fans from the primo aisle I was keeping empty allowing me full access to Mary and her friend (daughter of Howie Casey, horn player in the band).
    "In my green coloured suit I was preparing to shoot up the city" but really all I had was my brown velvet jacket and pocket camera to shoot up the show. The two girls were actively amusing themselves with me and while my attention was on the band Mary secretively found the camera and began taking photos of me. Someone had a bouquet of flowers and I asked her nicely for a pink carnation. She happily gave me one. I broke off the stem and asked Mary if she would put it into her mouth. Then I asked for my camera back - if you can't guess what I did then you've either stopped reading or not really familiar with earlier P & L solo work. The photo I got was Mary mimicking the cover of 'Red Rose Speedway'.
    Believe it or not this is the short version - the best is yet to come.
    As alluded to all was being observed. So the first time the bodyguard showed up he asked me to huddle up with the kids, Heather (Linda's girl and Paul's adopted) + babysitter and Stella. Then, THEN, he told them all that I, . . . I was cool . . . and that he had been called up to help clear off a bunch of jellie babies an enthusiastic Beatle freak had thrown onto the stage. The last thing he said to me was "guard them with your life". All I could think was, uh, DUH! ok. I don't think I aged a day after that moment. WAIT - there's more!
    I was now in the super premium VIP section between nanny, Stella and Heather. Most fans were on their seats by now and I was conversing with a very adult Heather about what music she liked and about her favorite Wings song ('HI, HI, HI'). The same girl that made Ringo laugh in 'Let it Be' was making me laugh as I was guarding her life - how absurd, ironic or - whatever was that? Anyway, I was wearing a unique, demitasse ring a recent love interest had given me so I slipped it off and showed it to her. She showed sincere curiosity toward it and even tried it on. It fit - perfectly! Of course I gave it to her. She was profoundly real about it and showed no discomfort at a random guy hanging with her and her family - GUARDING THEIR LIVES - Not exactly sure whether it was dark or light, but it was magical.
    It's now 2024 and they're all still alive, so . . . Job well done - unless, I actually fell asleep after watching 'Wingspan' and this was all just a dream. I guess you'll never know - but, 'I Will'.

    I think anyone can write a song if they tried (as is proven by some of the artists out there) but writing a good song is the difficult part. There is only so many chords, as Paul himself said when looking at the piano, in front of me is all the music ever written. A good melody is the hard part. Paul has a knack for good subject, lyrics with chords and melody and hence he makes it look easy. I don't recall any two of his songs sounding the same.

      It really feels much more like a conversation. I think his daughter is just trying to step out and be a bit like a journalist but of course the relationship is so close that ….
