Yeah, Davey, Nigel and Dee WERE the Elton John band. Their sound together was unreal...and they do not get enough credit imo.

"Kind of a cool little riff." Right. "The Titanic was a boat."
One of the greatest rock guitarists ever on one of the finest LP's ever produced.

Hearing him smash out the introductory riff to Love Lies Bleeding just sends me. What a great tone. His playthrough of it here breaks up almost as much as it does on the record and that's so awesome. It hammers so freakin hard that it almost feels like it's gonna bust the speakers. Truly one of the all time greats!

Having just seen Elton's Farewell tour and Davey last night I can say he is one of the truly great under-rated players. All the bloody lessons on here about modes and licks and scales, and Davey plays over multiple key changes and clever chords using chord tones just effortlessly. His Les Paul tone on the tour is spectacular!

Someone should do a cover of the funeral for a friend song from the concert in Australia.

Underrated by whom? I've always rated Davey among the Page, Hendrix elite. Only morons can't tell he's one of the best.

My older brother introduced me to Elton John in the early 70's via his Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player album.
I had no idea who he was but I knew I liked his music.
He made it known that he owned lot of eyeglasses, all very different but with that kind of money he could afford them.
Look at the pictures of him over the years and you will see what I mean.

"And after all the silliness of Funeral For A Friend, basically what happens is this kind of thing. It starts off with your heroic....." And then Davey launches into one of rocks greatest guitar tracks. What a guy! Friendly, good natured and very self effacing for his creation, a song that has never left my head since hearing it for the first time in 1973. Thank you, Davey, Dee, Nigel, Elton and Bernie! And thank you Terry, for posting this little extra bit from the DVD about the making of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

That's the guitar that Elton gifted him after seeing Davey drooling over it at a music store. A 1959 Les Paul Custom. It was $9,000 back then (I think, I read the story in the 90s). Elton told Davey "if you like it, buy it!" And Davey said "I can't afford that! That's all the money in the world"...Davey shows up at rehearsal that afternoon and his tech hands it to him saying "Elton bought this for you." Talk about a great guy.

This Album will go down as one of the greatest of all time. What incredible music. Changed my life. Elton John is the the Rock genius of the 70s. While the rock and Roll bands were trying to out do each other he reinvented how it is done..

Davey's guitar playing and Elton's early songs are a big part of my growing up. The riff at 3:00 automatically makes me think of one of my cousins for some reason. My brother and some of my cousins were all into EJ in the '70s. Great memories! Thanks to Davey and all involved in that wonderful music!
