Big thanks for servicing my bike! I will definitely be back, just shows even if you ride your bike on a turbo, always needs a service! Love the videos as always, and great to see my bike featured
If I remember correctly the lower headset part you removed is a converter to use loose bearings, it should be left in there, the crown race on the fork is for a sealed bearing (not for loose balls to run on it, the ball bearings will wear the crown race on the fork). You can remove the black cups in the frame and fit sealed bearings (weird design but it's pretty good for serviceability)
@@Bikespeedswhen u put cartridge bearings in, what else was needed? Crown racer? Top split Bushing to centralise fork? Or it simple swap bearings and re use what it had on it already?
I absolutely love this channel and visit it daily. It got me to look at my bike very differently and gave me the confidence to clean different components with ease. Took my front bracket and chain wheel out and cleaned it by hand, because I was so annoyed how dirty it was for years. Hard to clean without taking it off.
Love your videos! Lesson learned about cleaning components. Was doing a restore on a vintage SunTour grouppo. Decided to get off the gunk by tossing them in a dishwasher with name brand dishwashing detergent. Took off the first layer of gunk but also the shine. Came out grey and dull. Spent more time polishing than the rest of the project.
Worked in a bike shop and do all my own servicing. Some seriously good work on show here. One little tip I have (for owners, more-so than bike mechanics )the back nut holding the front brake caliper into the fork quite often seizes, as stated in the video. I put a square of electrical tape over the hole in the back of the fork, after re-assembly and especially on a bike with no mud guards .that keeps a lot of road spray and corrosion out of that recess.Subscribed,thanks.
That "second" crown race was supposed to be installed. They are like that from Specialized. I worked on them while new. The lower one is for when the fork is installed in a bike with sealed bearings. It was an adaptor
Wow! I am working on a specialized Allez now and found the 2nd crown race. I was totally stumped. I removed it too, but now I am confused. So it should be there??? It seems to do nothing but create a gap.
Fantastic videos as always. What would be nice of you is to mention, once in a while, the torque values. I know your videos are not meant to be repair masterclasses, but i’m guessing you know all the torque values by heart. I’m learning so much from these. Thanks.
There are some documents online with detailed values. The values are mentioned in the videos on occasion, but for a full overview information is available online. 👍
Excellent once again ! Since watching your clips I religiously torque up and double check things like derailleur mounting and saddle bolts. I wish I'd listened about the front brake mounting though, stuck and rounded on my winter bike.
Always a pleasure to watch and the first time Ive watched one fully on my phone🙏 These videos certainly murder your phone batrery🙈 It’s home Tv watching from Now on😉 grew work as always and So concise👍🙏
Honestly - is there anyone else watching this from any bike shop anywhere in the world, who would line up tyre logo with the valve without a customer asking ?? 😆Superb.
Love the videos. Always neat to see the before and after shots. You probably get this question a lot, how do you keep the shop floor clean after all the washing you do on the bikes?
Absolutely love those silver component after the ultrasonic, like new! Great job as always. On the turbo a lot and grwta reminders to check before before you get out onto the road. Nice to see you swapping out the watch collection through the video too, like little Easter ggs 🎉
I have a specialised allez. First thing I did was get rid of the weird handlebars, got some good risers on there now. Hopefully can get an eccentric flip-flop hub and get rid of that ugly "derailleur" thing.
Nice video as always. Question: you said never use heat with the ultrasonic cleaner to avoid damaging anodizing. What is the temperature of the water you use in the cleaner then? I'd assume warmer the water better the results, particularly when cleaning greasy parts.
I like what you say about the spoke protector "It's not our job to take that off", I always clean it up and refit it when possible (they are generally cracked and broken though 😅), unfortunately my collegues always take them off if even they are fine.
My bikes are both of this vintage: 3x9 cyclocross bike that I put together myself; hybrid Campagnolo/Shimano drivetrain b/c I like Ergopower better. 2nd bike is a fixed/free combo with Surly duo-cog & White Industries dual freewheel on back; double crank up front. 3rd bike is a Tern folder; just your basic 1x8, but gears retrofitted by me to the ratios I want. Rear derailleur takeup is the limiting factor; would prefer a wider range on back. Might switch to 1x9 for better parts interchangeability.
Hi Paul thank you! The best place for you exact components is a google search like, “ultegra 10 speed chainset bolt torque setting” as there’s so many variants 🧡
I enjoyed the service and looking at a bike that's really my type of bike. If it were the correct size, I'd buy something like this bike in a heartbeat.
Used to own this exact bike, it was great, but the main rear derailleur casing snapped in half, suprising because I had owned it from new and never dropped it. Must have been a factory defect. Have a look for hairline cracks.
Thank you for doing vids of bikes from different eras and spec levels. Was this a 2011 Allez Triple? Would you characterize that headset as one of the (ultimately short-lived) proprietary ‘Specialized Mindset’ semi-integrated headsets? I have a 2009 Allez and just last month needed to replace such a headset. The shop mechanic that did the job (put in a Cane Creek 40-series w/ IS41 cartridge bearings) found it less straightforward than the Internet forums we consulted suggested. In the end it required a little bit of witchcraft, and the fit within the head tube bore has us curious how well/long it will hold adjustment. Small plug that IF you get a bike in that needs that type of replacement job, IMO, RUclips doesn’t have a clearly authoritative and well-shot video on the topic.
That pretty much summed up my experience, I wasn’t 100% sure wether to go loose balls, sealed bearings or replacement, it was a system I’d never seen and couldn’t find info on🧡
I enjoy watching your videos, I have a question for you, I have a steel framed bike with aluminium seat post which have rusted together. Do you have any suggestions how I can free them?

Honestly I would happy to be a bike mechanic if I can service only these kind of road bikes. Simple and serviceable. But reality is way different... People buy garbage that only press machine can fix
Those pedals came off way too easily! Definitely did not appear torqued to spec. OMG those brakes were bad. And you're convincing me to get an ultrasonic cleaner! I also know of _no_ mechanics who inspect the tires for embedded glass! Going to start doing that!
Is there any particular reason, why you barely, or even never show e-Bikes on this channel? Something else: AFAIR you once said, that you heat the ultrasonic cleaner for some parts and in another video you said you never ever heat it up. Since I just got myself one for chain waxing, I'd be very curious, what speaks against heat for other parts than the chain. Thanks a lot!
We never show e-bikes because we don’t really do them! Our local area doesn’t have a big scene for them. We used to use heat but have since changed our tactics away from it so no heat🧡
Do not grease the crankarm and the BB taper on this type of fitting. If I came across a bike with a seized crankarm it would mainly be when a bike was beyond economical repair, due to other drivetrain elements and parts that were also seized. I don't know any bike mechanics who greased BB tapers.
I think you’ve stuffed this one up bud. That crown race is the lower remains of the cartridge bearing no? The black races in the frame are the outside shell of the cartridge bearing. The bearing looks nothing like a standard loose ball bearing. The seals are all just gone. The crown race on the fork is alloy? and has no convex shape to run a bearing, it’s going to do some dangerous damage to that fork running a loose bearing on a sealed crown race.
Came here to say the same. There are two failed cartridge bearings there, top and bottom. Hes just removed the lower part of the bearing and now the balls are running directly on the alloy conical seat of the fork. The forks will be buggered pdq.
@@Jonbsp :-) oh yes. that Shimano premium grease is so low friction you can use races made of butter soft aluminium with no worries! At least the tyre logos line up and the bolts all have a torque wrench clicked in them.
