I always give my bike a quick wash before taking it to the shop. Imagine going to the dentist without brushing your teeth.
I love the way you seem to love your work, excellent as always.
Thank you John!🧡
Should look into alt alt suspension and hub press. Quality looking kit and no hammering.
As a Trek tech I can really appreciate this video!
Awesome! Thanks for watching!🧡⚙️
Welcome back! Great to see a mountain bike being serviced in the channel. Amazing job as always, the time went by without even noticing it ☺
Thanks for the kind support! 🧡⚙️🚲
I was tired just watching all the work you did on that. Great job as usual.
Thanks for watching and supporting!🧡
Those hub overhauls were satisfying
Thank Tim!🧡
It's always satisfying watching those dirty components being cleaned
Thanks very much for your support!🧡⚙️
Nothing scared me more, but was most satisfying when I redid the bearings on my rear wheel and hub. Felt like a pro mechanic.
Good job! That’s not easy🧡
Blimey guys amazing rebuild that seem to be one of the most complex yet ? 👍👍👍👍
It certainly felt that way! Thanks for watching🧡⚙️
Welcome back! Amazing to see a mountain bike being serviced in the channel. Amazing job as always, the time went by without even noticing.
Cannot believe I'm first 😎🇫🇮 Absolute master class when it comes to hub servicing, well done 😎
Thank you as always! 🧡⚙️🚲
Thanks for another one! superb work on the bike and the video!
Thanks very much Matthew! 🧡⚙️
I love to see your videos, I do support my local bike shop in part thanks to you!!
That’s good to hear, thanks George!🧡
Another great job coupled with fantastic rear hub details!
Thanks Andy we appreciate your continued support!🧡
Awesome.that was in another league ❤
Really appreciate it thank you🧡⚙️
Great work once again guys, keep it up!
Thank you Luke glad you’re still enjoying it!🧡⚙️
Another satisfying video, awesome job on the MTB Trek ❤️ sir! Especially cleaning the hub
Really appreciate your support again thank you!🧡⚙️
Awesome hub rebuilt 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Five Star Rating.
Thank you!🧡⚙️
It's funny how innovative tech doesn't seem to be more reliable and it's never cheaper. My old Deore QR hubs and square taper BBs just run and run and run. Tubes in the tyres, eyeletted hand built wheels. No dramas and no need for a shop service.
Completely agree 🧡
Great video again. Very nice to see how to you did the rear hub!
Thank you as always! 🧡⚙️
I love it when you work on mountain bikes!
There will be more!🧡⚙️
A well used bike brought back to life ! Nice job as always guys 👍🚴♀️
Thank you Brian! See you again soon!🧡⚙️
This is by far my favourite channel on youtube. I have watched most videos and some even twice and so happy when a new one comes out.
The support really goes a long way thank you!🧡⚙️
Wow your attention to detail is on another Planet, superb video love it.
Thanks very much Michael!🧡
Nice to see a well used bike being reconditioned and ready for action. Great work.
Yes it’s always enjoyable knowing the bike gets ridden! Thank you again!🧡⚙️
Well done Lee. What an epic service. Those wheel bearings were shot. Congratulations to Simon…what a proud moment for father and son.
Thank you Todd we couldn’t have done it without all the support!🧡⚙️
It's great to have you both back doing comprehensive servicing. The attention to detail on your videos gents, is a pleasure to watch and admire 👏👏. Have a grand bank holiday weekend! 🍻
Really kind words as always! 🧡⚙️
Cracking video and service on the bike, as always. Pretty complex machine. Oh, and congrats to Simon on his house!
Thanks from the both of us!🧡
I always enjoy the variety of bikes you put up here; every one has it's own unique issues and challenges. Looking forward to the recumbent, tandem, hand cycle, ebike......Penny Farthing 🤔👊
I’ve actually done all of the above in the shop!🧡
Really like the videos that involve specialist work such as the work on the rear hub or wheel building and tensioning. For those of us that have aspirations of being able to do this ourselves it is quite inspiring.
That’s great to hear! Thanks for enjoying the channel🧡
Totally addictive videos! So relaxing and always fun to see how you manage to get such amazing results with seemingly simple means. You should have many more subscribers!
Thank you! More subscribers is the goal so thanks for joining us!🧡
A beautiful work as usual 😊👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you as always! Glad to see you in the comments again I think you are possibly the longest running commenter!🧡
Excellent job 😊
Thanks for enjoying across the channel this week!🧡
seeing you work on that freehub reminded me of a weekend away with my cycling club years ago. we rode from Swansea to Aberystwyth on the Saturday, and when nearly there one of the boys freewheels (the old screw-in type) started to seize up and act like a fixed wheel. He foolishly left it overnight rather than seeking out a LBS and the following morning it had seized solid - not ideal for a very hilly ride back home! He thought he'd take the back wheel off to try some sort of fix, and as he did the freewheel just fell to bits and came off with it, with springs and pawls pinging out all over the place! Result - one useless back wheel and a ride home in the support van!
great video as always 🙂
Disaster! Good story though!🧡
That old horse was rode hard and put away wet. Guessing the previous owner has a lot of good memories from it.
Exactly!🧡⚙️
Love those syringes of grease in the tube rack.... Quality 😃
Thanks James! They’re available on www.bikespeeds.com/shop 🧡
That was one well ridden MTB - kudos to the owner.
Everyday for years! Thanks for watching!🧡⚙️
Top drawer job as always the customer must have been so pleased at pickup time. Cheers
Thanks very much Kevin hope you’re still enjoying all our content!🧡
I’ve got one of those and they are a cracking bike. Wheel bearings going is common, as Trek throw in the cheapest bearings they can find. I replaced mine with stainless and both wheels have been perfect ever since. Love the colour of that bike, owners going to be well pleased with the job you did 👌🏻
Interesting to know! 🧡
satisfying!
Thank you!🧡⚙️🚲
Great video as usual. I really believe you could have a channel just reading.... you have the most soothing voice on YT
Haha thanks Casey! I’ve heard Bob Ross of cycling in the comments before lol!🧡⚙️
And the moral of the story is, don't jet wash your bikes, it destroys all the bearings in no time at all
Muddy flooded trails did the damage!
@@darrenboswell7055 I've worked as a mechanic for 30 years and it is extremely rare for front wheel bearing to fail, they just don't suffer with water and mud getting in unless the conditions are really, really bad, 99% of all bikes I've seen with all round bearing failures like this have been jet washed
Deffo never jet washed! But shin deep flooded roads….. yep for sure!!
Woohoo a mountain bike. Great job as ever.
Thanks Sam! There will be more slowly but surely!🧡
Wow. Looks like a new bike... Again 🎉 congratulations on the new house and epic job on those wheels
We both appreciate your support across the years!🧡
@@Bikespeeds appreciate how much you guys are doing to share learnings and goodness with us all. Fabulous approach to bike maintenance and repair too. Brilliant 🎉
Excellent video. I would spray some silicon onto the valve cores before refitting, that will stop them getting clogged with sealant. The bolt coming loose/falling out is very common on Shimano 12 speed shifters, I would add some Loctite.
Very good knowledge!🧡
Your videos are always food for thought! My old wheels were cup and cone Shimano HG. Now with touring wheels with heavy duty hubs and obviously full contact sealed bearings and very heavy grease used, I have something to compare with. As soon as the very smooth bearings spin much longer, confirmed with turning the axle by hand I should leave them alone. The freehub sound is so different, these are not the old Shimano HG freehubs. Not knowing the brand Seido Magnon hubs other than Bombtrack, I wouldn't know bearing sizes until apart. I'm keeping the stock Topstone wheels around in case of problems. I could do all this at home in that case. So far, extremely pleased.
Everything’s certainly moved on! 🧡⚙️
More mtbs please!
We hear you!🧡
@9:40 you did push those 2 bearings by the inner race of the first one, that's a no no !
Beautiful job. . . Or as you’d probably say ‘ bootiful’ job. I must tackle wheel bearings one day but it’s a daunting task.
Setup is key, the more tools you have the better in my experience, I had to get a new bearing press for this wheel and I already have 6!🧡
I liked the rear hub rebuild
Glad to hear it! Thanks for the support!🧡
3# watches later ….great job men congratulations on success keep it up😎
3 watches! You are making it happen for us! Thanks for your support!🧡⚙️
Very good Video
I realy wish i had your Skills in repairing Bikes.
This is a very nice Bike, and in your Hands it willl be good as new.
Here in Germany there is NO Bike Repair Shop, that repair a Free Hub, they install only new Parts.
I wish i had a Shop like yours here in my Hometown
More of these pls
It really depends on your over heads as to wether it’s cost effective, we live in an affordable part of the world but rent in cities can price a lot of jobs out!🧡
When you pressed the two bearings together into the free hub body, your drift was on the inner race instead of the outer race. It’s best to always press bearings in on the outer race if the press fit is on the outer race and vice versa if the bearing is pressed onto a shaft (I.e. on the inner race)
Recently discovered the channel and I’m totally hooked! I find the videos very therapeutic and I also learn a lot too. The attention to detail and dedication to do the best job for your customers is very impressive. I’ve got two questions for you Lee & @bikespeeds; 1) do you always wear your lovely watches when working on bikes?! 2) if you’re keeping a chain do you reuse the quick link or do you use a new quick link when putting the chain back on? Thanks, Rob
Hi Rob! I work everyday so if I didn’t wear my watches to work I’d never wear them! And yes we do, which isn’t advised by many but we’ve not had a problem with reusing quick links. Thanks for your support 🧡
I really like the bontrager tyres, I think they're underrated.
I agree!🧡
Would be interesting to see you servicing the forks
I don’t do much of it! We have mountain bike specialists in our area which get the very high end and in depth work🧡
Interesting this was previously running an Eagle chain on an otherwise Shimano HG+ drivetrain...but looks like a correctly fitted Shimano chain was replaced.
All 11 speed and 12 speed mixes, finally caught up with times, not sure about the T-Top tho.
SRAM and Shimano chains are interchangeable. The only exception is the flat top sram chain isn’t.
Its fun to remove and install bearing on the wheels.
Yes it is lol!🧡⚙️
Great work just got my trek-hybrid a new crank bb and my xc bike is getting it master cylinder rebuilt since it it was ent taking any fluid from either end.😊
Sounds like a huge rebuild!🧡
@@Bikespeeds yea quite expensive repairs
This is a large-scale work
Hub services are satisfying for real. Might you be able to share the knowledge, what're the drift kits you needed for this service and bearing sizes?
I might be able to prepare our shop for this, as a mechanic I don't like to sell a whole new wheel to a customer.
We actually mixed and matched a lot of sets so I wish I could give you a straight forward answer but there isn’t one. We will try to get kits listed on our website as we get more money to reinvest so definitely keep your eyes pealed but in short. Buy kits and put them in drawers you will always need something your main kit doesn’t have!
1:34 I understand that 1x systems have thin chaing that dont last long, but wasnt aware that clutch enhanced the wear
22:12 prior to deciding to upgrade my bike to 105 di2, i did a lot of research, found out a bunch of horror incidents of people over tightening the lever flare nut and cracking the plastic housing where the olive goes into, took me quite some time to find a 8mm Crowfoot Wrench to pair with my torque wrench.
We have seen it!🧡
Most impressive thing is that your “work watch” is a Rolex
Great, Great Video. I loved the bearing replacement in particular. A question if I may please, the front shocks were not included in the service, why would this be? Thank you
Hi David most people use mountain bikes as road bikes including this customer. It’s his “bike to work” bike so the extra labour is not really required for his needs 🧡
Lovely work man. You have a new wristwatch ?
Thanks for the support! Not new but not often worn!🧡
What a transformation Lee and as always fantastic detail, can you tell me what you use in your ultrasonic cleaner and the heat settings you use, I gave good results with mine but never as clean as yours are.
Regards
Tim
No heat, degreaser and water with usually more degreaser than recommended, around a 3rd of the tank 🧡
Another great video. just changed the tyres on my MTB and thru front through axle is now stripped, can't get the axle out. It was correctly torqued as well so don't know why this happened.
Could’ve been a few problems, hopefully you’ve solved it already but definitely grease the replacement!🧡⚙️
1 vote FOR the bearing press !
Lol!⚙️
Do you ever service the clutch assembly of the Rear Derailleurs? If a video would be great. Cheers from Ottawa
I have but not on camera! We will possibly show that next time we get one!🧡
Love the video. I have one of these! Did you do anything with the Isospeed connection? Im unsure about the service requirements for it!
For this service we did not! Thanks for watching 🧡
How did that guy get those bearings to look that bad? Great restoration !
Daily riding for years and pressure washing!🧡
Sigh. Bikes are getting so complex, the home mechanic doesn’t stand a chance. I couldn’t believe those wheel hubs…
It would help if manufacturers provided maintenance guides, rather than us relying on RUclips videos!
Hubs are relatively easy, Glad their all caged bearings now than the pesky small loose ball bearings, need to have the right amount, not too much not too less, dont forget one,two or three spacers, other wise you'll have a fixed hub instead of a freewheel, Yeah, rebuilt one of those hubs, we forgot 2 washers, but when we took it out it didn't have'em which was weird, but yeah. and you have more bearing choice, either stainless, enduro, light seal, or ceramic.
Nothing complicated about the wheel hubs. Am axel and a few bearings that come apart pretty easy. A lot better than the old cup and cone stuff.
When i first started fixing my own bike, the wheel has cup and cone hub. I ended up destroying the hub. With newer wheels, i can easily fix it
Hubs are easy if its the ratchet system like the dt swiss. I have both and have always preferred ratchet over pawls.
Было бы неплохо почистить рубашку и трос переключателя, так как с таким велосипедом там точно полно грязи, а так же перебрать вилку, если только ее уже не обслужили перед этим сервисом.
These and the Remedy models are known for rubbish quality bearings . I have a 2009 custom Trek hardtail and she is stellar .
Yes that’s what we said to the customer ourselves!🧡
@@Bikespeeds John Burke needs a wake up call . My Trek is getting an upgrade shortly .
Hi what way round should the safety washer on the between the crank and bb be? I think I had/ have this issue
Boss bike, great job
Had this one suffered neglect? Because I thought Trek were made to last (I have a Roscoe 8 but it's not my daily commute bike)
This was used daily all winter 🧡⚙️
Hi great vids, do you ever service e-bikes
Not all that often, there aren’t many in our local area 🧡
👍👍
Thank you thank you!🧡⚙️
Lee, you said early that 1x drivetrains don't typically have their chains last as long. Why is that. Never encountered that before. And clutched drivetrains.
There is more sideways tension on a 1x than there is on a 2x just because the chain has to travel up an down the cassette while remaining on just one chainring at the front, instead of having two chainrings meaning less of an angle as you use the low gears while on the small chainring and the high gears while on the big chainring.
I wonder, currently most wheel hubs are on the lower end in comparison toa servicing price.
So this hub originaly had to cos a fortune for the owner to prefer new hub and redoing the wheel over bearing replacing.
In Poland - a good enough hub + re- wiring cost would be for about 500 PLN.
So I wonder does it translate to 100 GBP ?
We can’t afford to keep a massive stock of parts in the shop and out customers value speed. We can often repair stuff far quicker than waiting for a new part to arrive!🧡
I took my chain off to clean it and noticed that when I spin the pedals there is also some noise, but it's not as lound as in the video. It's also a press fit BB, should I take it to a shop to get checked?
Absolutely! Bikes in general shouldn’t make noise 🧡⚙️
What is the degreaser/detergent you use in the ultrasonic cleaner?
Water soluble degreaser that we dilute 🧡
I wonder what’s the price for a service like this!
Strange the Ritchie logo's were unequally spaced on bars🤔
No, just the computer mount
3:45 - could you please give a name or a link to buy what an extractor you use?
Hi Lexa I don’t have a link but we soon intend to list our chosen presses on our website so stay tuned!🧡
What make of press is that?
If you put grease on the back of the metal brake pads, weren’t the grease work it’s way to the front and contaminate the pads?
Not in my experience 🧡
How is that integrated flex thing holding up?
Bad system but okay on this bike!🧡
Which grit of sandpaper do you use on the brake rotors?
Following
Around 100 grit🧡
11:28 what's the brand of that degreaser? and in what scenarios are you opting for degreaser instead of brake cleaner?
edit: nevermind I found it. It's MINT.
It’s Mint available on our website to the UK but not internationally 🧡
I wonder if they have jet washed it?
It looks that way. Unless he's biking through a meter of water all the time. But in my experience, not being careful with a pressure washer will leave you with a bike like this
my thoughts too, literally blasted the grease out of the bearing
It looks to me like it’s had heavy winter use. I ride off road a lot in the winter, and it’s drier in a swimming pull most of the time.
what bearing tool is that?
How much it cost this full service?
0:30 forbidden dead word
What bearing press set is that?
These are no name no brand eBay ones 🧡
What a strange crankset. Is that chainring attached with 8 bolts..?
Yes it was a very “one off” bike with strange 2020 components 🧡
I love your videos and I'd be happy to support you by buying products, but from outside UK that's not really a good deal.
Ever considered to set up a Patreon page? Or, even better, a direct Paypal address.
Hi Rich, thanks for your support across the channel. Yes international shipping and taxes is a pain but in our opinion paying the amount of shipping is no worse of a deal than gifting money with nothing in return. So we’d never want to do a PayPal or patreon as we quite like the sustainability of what customers get in return from the website 🧡⚙️
I'm from Brazil, how can I buy your products?
Yes we ship internationally! Thanks for your support!🧡⚙️
