      I'm in my mid-40s and get very nostalgic returning to old games - but I don't want to experience them *exactly* how I did the first time around.
      Even at the time, I bought the RGB cable, I saved for the Trinitron to try to make the game look better. Plugging my Analogue console into my mahoosive OLED just feels like culmination of that quest.
      I remember texture warp on the PS - but "I didn't like it them and I don't like it now"
      If I could have bought a "PS1 Pro" that did away with it at the time, I would have. It's taken 25 years and the feature is now free - but I'm still all in favour of it.

His comparison didn't make sense to me because Sony appeals more towards traditional console players. Why would Sony have a developer mode on their systems when it's a closed system similar to apple. Videos like these really make me think about grabbing a Series S since they tend to be more available than Series X, but at the same time, I plan on upgrading my computer probably sometime in the RDNA 3 generation because my CPU is 11 years old and GPU is a GTX 1660... would be a huge upgrade for me and probably more worth it to save my money in my own case.

    • @alxjones
      @alxjones 3 года назад +14

      @@delko000 Consider that some people don't want both a PC and a console for gaming. People like to game in the living room on their big TV, not on a monitor in their bedroom. Having one machine to play current gen console games and emulate older gen games is an awesome way to avoid compromises here.
      Plus, people that only need a computer for very basic tasks tend to get very low-spec laptops like MacBook Air. While that could certainly handle a PS1 emulator, it wouldn't be able to handle a lot of the improvements in graphics and framerate, and the lack of fans means that thermals are a real issue.
      Also, the Series S is $300. Without already knowing a lot about building PCs or doing a ton of research, it's difficult to know what a hypothetical build would be capable of, and even harder (maybe impossible right now) to make one that will actually match or surpass Series S in any way at that price point.
      Comparatively, the amount of research it takes to get DuckStation working on Series S, even with minimal tech knowledge, is negligible.
      And I can think of many more use cases, these are just the top of the list. I mean, if you *really* can't imagine why someone might want emulation on their console, you're just not trying.

      no. emulation doesn't alter the original game code. it only can hack the emulated hardware parts. hence why widescreen in an option. it hacks the GTE to recalculate 4:3 to another aspect ratio. for increased draw distance you'd need per-game patches.

    • @ederbarrero5585
      @ederbarrero5585 3 года назад +13

      The "increased" draw distance is just an illusion, it was always like this, but the extra crispiness of the presentation allows you to take in more details in the same frame, making the illusion work.
      At least that's how I see it, because as the above comment says, emulators rarely hack the games themselves but the underlying hardware.

    • @theblah12

At the resolutions like 240p anything more then a few meters away from the camera is going to look like a pixelated mess - the reason why games like MGS were able to get away with not having any facial animation is because even in the closest camera shots Snake's face is only going to be a dozen pixels or so wide.

    Duckstation is for PC and Linux too. I play PS1 games on an old dual-core PC with Duckstation and at 4 times internal and texture correction they look great on 1080p TVs. It's definitely the best PS1 emu at the moment what ever hardware you use

    What about the resolution change in Chrono Cross's menus? Is the internal scaling seamless, with no black screens?

    • @RyanMan767
      @RyanMan767 3 года назад +5

      Yes, that *should* work just fine. You will usually only ever encounter this type of issue on real hardware that's being upscaled to work on a modern display in one way or another. Emulation rarely has this issue, since its (ideally) totally reinterpreting the code, and rendering at any native resolution it wants. The render resolution would stay the same between those screens even if it doesn't on console.

    Overclocking and texture warp correction are godsends. I don't have an Xbox but I do have a Shield TV running Duckstation. It's a badass emulator.

    I recently played Metal Gear Solid emulated by Duckstation on my oled tv and i was blown away. This is how I remebered MGS on PS1 back in 1998 but way more improved.

    I wish they would remaster/remake Chrono Cross x_o
    If I recall correctly on some emulators the mega slow down happens when a battle starts, when that effect is being displayed.

      A remaster won't fix the incredibly convoluted story, unfortunately...

      I played through it once and I don't remember the storyline at all, other than getting new characters every 5 minutes with no time for a backstory for any of them. also some part of the story that completely invalidated all of chrono trigger which I was not happy with.

    the 60fps chrono cross made me gasp in awww. I'm so happy we live in a timeline where retro games are getting performance upgrades. Hats off to the duckstation dev team.

    I prefer to use downscaling or native res on ps1 emulators and add a filter. These games really don't look good at 4k.

      Totally agree. PS1 assets were not made with these resolutions in mind.

      @@d4t6ix ps1 assets were made with 2mb dram and 1mb vram restrictions in mind. even if you'd have 4k back then, you wouldn't be able to physically fit more detailed content there. crash bandicoot is your best ps1 detailing as it streams the whole level in chunks from cd.

    I just want to drop by and give my support to Duckstation. I use it religiously on my PC, and it runs all of my favorite PS1 games in stunning clarity and accuracy. It's so damn easy to get running too. I highly recommend it to anyone who really wants the best quality from a PS1 game, with easy set-up.
