The aesthetics of this video was inspired by german expressionism, and it recreates Fritz Lang movie Metropolis and Tamara Lempicka's art deco paintings. Some scenes are direct recreations of Lempicka's paintings. And the final line about the heart and the mind is a quote from Metropolis. The video depicts the male and the female world. A group of men working in a factory where there are no feelings, as if they were machines themselves, working in a hard, suffocating environment. On the other side Madonna represents the female side (the cat is an obvious symbol) and at some point she penetrates the male world, but in order to do that she has to find the male side of her personality (the part where she's dancing dressed as a man). Then she provokes the awakening of one of the workers from his dehumanizing submission. She starts to sing and one of the workers hears her voice. She encourages him to express himself and that provokes a riot. So the song is about expressing yourself but also about understanding why we do the things we do and why sometimes our feelings are disconnected from our actions and we become a cogwheel in the social machine. It's also about being honest to your lover and most of all to yourself. And of course it's a feminist song about empowering women. She is saying "you can be a feminist and enjoy sex". And that was very controversial. Some feminists said she was degrading women but she explained that the woman in the video is a woman in charge, she was crawling under her own table and she chained herself, she was chained to her desire. There wasn't a man making her do it. It was her call. This was a groundbreaking song and very controversial video.
Wow. I've been a madonna fan for years and I didn't know it that deep. I know she was dressed as the monopoly man as well as a 30s femme fatale and spoke about empowerment but I didn't catch the male world and the female world part. The deco era definitely was about very robust male and female gender roles. By the way, did you notice that there was that reference to the cover art of The Great Gatsby at the end? You know, the one with the blue sky with eyes? Definitely connects with the art deco theme.
Directed by David Fincher who also did Vogue, Bad Girl and Oh Father. He also did iconic videos for Aerosmith, Paula Abdul, Billy Idol, Mchael Jackson, George Michael, Justin Timberlake to name a few. But he's more known for his movies Fightclub, Zodiac, Seven, Benjamin Button, Social Network and many more.
David Fincher is a great talent, but he killed the momentum of the Alien movies with Alien 3. It truly detailed his career for a couple years by sticking Ripley on a prison planet with no weapons. Anyhow, he rebounded and I love most of his movies.
Gary Ryckewaert Well Alien 3 was his first movie (26 years old) and it was a disaster to begin with. He had to pick up what previous director Ward had started and there wasn’t even a complete script then plus it was changed all the time and he was under pressure from FOX to get things done faster and cheaper turning the whole thing into a nightmare, so he has completely disowned the movie and refuses to talk about it. But he came back with vengance with SEVEN!
Gary Ryckewaert Ward was initially hired to direct Alien3 but left the project and David was hired instead. Just check wikipedia or the lenghty documentary here on youtube. Alien3 was a giant clusterfuck and Fincher was treated like shit.
@@fylaxx Oh, were you on the set to see how Fincher was treated? Your view is quite different than what Sigourney Weaver described in several interviews. Lost in an alternate reality much? LoL
My future babies: Mommy, what does an empowered woman look like? Me: (sits them down, sets up powerpoint, shuffles index cards, clears throat) Her name is Madonna and this is the 80s...

Haha I know you guys are young but it kills me when the film references go over your head. The video was directed by David Fincher, and is based on the silent film Metropolis. There's been a lot of feminist interpretations of the video, I suggest you read some of them, they're pretty interesting. Great reaction like always. :)
In their defense, we don’t still have people from the 1920s saying - hey you should have known about this from the 1880’s, you should be ashamed! It’s just part of humanity/time. At least give them some credit that they’re admiring things from 30 years ago. I wasn’t doing that when I was in high school in the 90’s.
jay luebs I dunno. I guess it’s different for everyone. When I was in my 20’s I LOVED old movies from like 30, 40, 50 years before and also old music from decades prior. I mean when you’re watching a video from the ‘80’s or ‘90’s that was shot in black and white for artistic purposes, and you hear the comment, wow, this video is really old, It’s in black and white (yeah I’ve heard them do it) it’s like, really?!? Hi DanD & Hansy from St. Augustine, FL! Thank You for the time & effort to upload the vid Vogue Live....much appreciated by many! Also....for this current vid as well!! Funnnnn & Entertaining! To answer your question from the previous vid 'Vogue Live from MTV'..... re "What did you do at the concert before the cellphones" is any easy answer. You went to a concert because of being a fan & sit there being emotionally invested to watch the performance , dynamics of the concert itself & taking in the actual experience of being there. I am 66yo & have seen Tina Turner (7 times), Diana Ross (2), The Pointer Sister (1), Donna Summer (1), Bette Midler (1) & Reba McEntire (1). When I still think of these concerts....... it still feels like yesterday!! ( all without a cellphone).
So, I am 45 and Madonna was everything to me all through the 80's and 90's. This video was loosely based on 1927 silent film Metropolis among other things. As a huge fan I recommend you watch videos Open your Heart and Live to Tell. Watch her live performances from Concert Tours Ciao Italia, The Girly Show which I went to in 1993, and Blonde Ambition. Also, watch some Eurythmics videos. Annie Lennox is amazing. Watch Here comes the Rain Again and Sweet Dreams.
You need to see her 1984 VMAs performance of Like A Virgin. This was her first national TV performance. She's singing live. She's in a wedding dress, and it was iconic. It defined her for years until the Vogue performance. Classic. The OG performance. ruclips.net/video/gkSxhG4cbPo/видео.html
This video was inspired by the classic silent German expressionist sci-fi film "Metropolis" (1927), famous for its art deco design and dystopian vision of the future. In it, industrialists and businessmen live in the towering skyscrapers while the workers live underground operating the machinery that runs the city.

I love that you're going through all of the queens videos. This is still such an empowering song. Make sure you know you are worth everything and don't take anything less. And Cameron...such a beautiful man...why he was one of the first men considered a male Supermodel. I miss having Male Supermodels. There are none anymore since the 90's. I have a suggestion but, I have been off RUclips for a minute and I am trying catch up. You might have already reacted to it. Also, for Madonna songs, when a new single was released, the gay clubs here in LA and through out, would have a Madonna night. Where the majority of the songs were Madonna dance mixes and they would play the new single at a certain time. But, everyone had already gone to the record stores to buy the album when it first cam out. I remember standing in line just to get into the store. Fun time! 👍🏼😊
It's really appalling how many references to pop culture (and culture in general) you guys miss on every video that was released before 2000, and not because you are young, but because you are so ignorant. The lack of general culture is off the charts. This video was inspired on the 1920's movie Metropolis. You also missed every single reference on the video for Vogue. This is cringe worthy.
Absolutely tribute to MJ. Blond Ambition was when she wore her cone bra under the suit. She was making a statement about women being able to do what men can do and still be powerful. Sexuality = empowerment.

Madonna said her idea for the video was influenced by the 1977 American film Looking for Mr. Goodbar - a film in which the main female character lives a rather self-destructive life and is stabbed to death by a one-night stand.
Express Yourself was inspired by the 1927 silent film Metropolis. It was about a futuristic city run by an all-powerful woman who controlled the city's workers, who worked like slaves. There's a lot of 1920s things in this video, from Madonna's hairstyle to the furniture she lounges on.
Funny you saw it looked old cuz it was so futuristic. At the time it was the most expensive music video ever made. Now it’s number 3 of all time. Still after 31 years later!

When I heard "Born this Way" By Lady Gaga this song is what I thought about. That's why when she mixes both songs in one of her tour she sings "She's not me".
The scenes with the finger waves in her hair popular during the 1930’s, the mens suits, cigarettes are All in reference to one of her Idol’s Marlene Dietrich. If you Look up Marlene’s films you are going to see similarities between the two Mega Stars that will blow you away.

I usually don't hear the "Born this Way" melody when I put on "Express Yourself", but somehow in your video I kept listening it. Maybe because I have a fan on and the video had a lower sound so I coulndn't discern much of Madonna's singing and mostly listened to the melody.
React to the live performance of this song. Blond Ambition Tour. She recreated the video and it was a tour opener! :) It is her most famous performance. Long blond ponytail, heavy makeup and male suite.
“Erotica” live from the Confessions Tour, Into the Groove, Rain, I’ll Remember, This Used to be my Playground, The Power of Goodbye, Crazy for You... :-)
