I believe the “respect yourself” line was once explained as Madonna’s way of saying express yourself (in terms of sexual expression or exploration) but also respect yourself in order to protect yourself and your boundaries. This was in 1989 when the AIDS epidemic was at a high and no one was discussing it apart from Madonna and Elisabeth Taylor primarily. Around this time many of her friends were dying and Madonna became a huge advocate for safe sex practices while still also encouraging people to be comfortable in their own sexual experiences and exploration.
My friend Vincent Paterson choreographed this and in autobiography said that when she's dancing at the top of the stairs, she asked what she should do with her left hand at the end of the dance. Vince suggested she grab her crotch as she has the biggest balls of anyone he knew. So she did! It to this day is the third most expensive video ever made. When she is dancing behind the screen, that is the sexiest piece of film ever created. The look she gives the camera (and audience) as she dances is fire.
She was like a German actress in a great German movie (Metropolis). Great song, great video, she absolutely writes the best pop songs, and brilliant reaction as always big brother.
I won't get into everything... this is definitely about female empowerment and taking on traditional 'masculine' energy while still remaining feminine. The cat... well, the symbolism is pretty overt there and I think you got it. Let's just say it's her 'Secret Garden' and 'Where Life Begins'. As for her in chains, she said that was about her putting herself in chains and that she is chained by her own desires. The creepy guy... yah, he's the factory owner or 'the head' in the quote. He makes money on the suffering of the workers (the hands) and M represents the heart that brings the two together. The musicians under glass that he has control of... well, it made more sense with the original mix of the song that's on the album, since it features horns, but the video remix by Shep Pettibone takes the horns out. I think it was a nod to what's happening in the music, but also a symbol of how he is so rich, powerful and corrupt that he turns men into toys that he can manipulate to his will on a whim. And while there is a similarity to Respect Yourself, there is one notable song that clearly references Express Yourself even if the artist won't admit it. LOL
Ahh, Madonna is the heart! I didn't get that but it makes sense. Does Gaga still not admit that her song is indebted to this one? It's so obvious, even if it was done accidentally!
@@bridgethegapreactions to my knowledge she never has. I remember her saying during the controversy that she was inspired by Whitney… and bish… where? How? Lol. No one bought it at the time… but whatever. Everyone is inspired by somebody before them and that’s all fine, but Madame Xerox has definitely’borrowed’ from M repeatedly.
Well, as I show in the last 10 seconds of this video, parts of Express Yourself have very similar melodies and rhythms to The Staple Singers' Respect Yourself. Thing is, Madonna would probably admit that and it's not a problem to lift bits of other songs if you do something cool with them. It just looks a bit silly to deny it when everyone else can see it (if that is what happened- I have no idea). Anyway, they're friends now apparently!
@@bridgethegapreactions yes agreed. There’s nothing that’s truly 100% original at this point. Everyone is inspired by people from the past. I just think there have been too many examples of ‘homage’ and ‘borrowing’ for it to be coincidental. ;)
Great reaction as always. I remember from seeing interviews at the time that Madonna said that the main meaning of the video was that 'pussy rules the world' (her words) and thats why she embodied the cat in parts. The part where she is chained... she said symbolised her being chained to her desires... If you haven't already you should check out the nightline interview she did in defence of the outcry over her Justify My Love video (and watch the video of course). Love your Madonna reactions so thank you.
I see that Madonna is becoming one of your faves so I strongly recommend Madonna's bad girl video, 100 % underrated masterpiece directed by David Fincher. The bad girl SNL performance is also a gem, a very different Madonna vibe right there. Love your reactions btw ✨
Easily one of my top 3 favorite Madonna videos! An interviewer once referred to her being "dominated" in this video. Immediately, she was like, wait a minute....nobody forced me to do anything...I crawled under my own table, I chained myself to the bed. She said she was "chained to her own desires" One thing I've always appreciated about Madonna are the many film, art and literary references in her work that have made me then go and investigate those things myself. I'd never heard of Metropolis, but after seeing this, I definitely sought it out on my next visit to Blockbuster Video 😊
At the time, this was the most expensive video ever made at $5million that Madonna paid herself, maybe from the five million she got from Pepsi. Lol You are absolutely right about this video being sexy as hell, also Madonna can pull off any look from any genre and wear it like she was born to it.
And i remember she got criticism from the womens rights lot about the line "what you need is a big strong hand to lift you to a higher ground" ... Always upsetting someone but always made them stop and take note...which stopping and taking note is exactly what this video did to the young gays who just discovered their idol
I think the heart drawn on the cover is one of her charms. Madonna has always been empathetic to the feminist cause, even when it didn't understand Madonna yet.
Hi. Great reaction. I am just in awe and amazement every time she and David Fincher worked on something together. It always just had incredible synchronicity and depth and purpose. The enigmatic cinematic scope and ambition of these videos were dark and mysterious and so beautifully thought out and put together and orchestrated. The two of them together were artistic gold and these 5 minute mini movies communicated and conveyed and created world class cinema to the finest, tiniest details that most 2 hour plus films couldnt get halfway to. A perfect, hermetically sealed universe that changed the rules and shifted the boundaries of what a music video could be and mean. They are still great friends to this day and have great respect and love for one another. They quietly dated each other around that time and are both very fond of each other to this very day. And the often imitated never duplicated body of work they left behind for us( Express Yourself, Oh Father, Vogue, Bad Girl) stands the test of time and influenced many musicians and film makers with their collaborations over the years. I always wished that they could've worked together on a film project cause i thought the two of them just got each other artistically. Madonna as Marla in Fight Club- imagine!!j
Madonna was also being considered for the role of Catwoman in the earlier Batman franchise around this time which adds another deliberate multi- layer to the cat and milk sequence.
It is indeed one of her most erotic music videos, but the most homoerotic one is the one that followed this and also from Like a prayer which is Cherish. Make sure you react to that too because it's a masterpiece lyrically, musically and visually as well.
How can we not love *David FIncher* ? He's a _genius_ behind the camera! It was the *first time* that a Madonna video was made with a _remix of the song_ and not with the original version. In this case a remix by *Shep Pettibone* was used . Also *Christina Aguilera's* clip *"Not Myself Tonight"* is heavily inspired by this one and also by two other Madonna's videos “Justify My Love” and “Human Nature". Gwen Stefani's “It's my life” is also inspired by Madonna's looks in the EXPRESS YOURSELF video.
The underwear dance scene behind the screen was a reference to Kim Basinger's strip dance to Mickey Rourke from the film '9 and a half weeks' in 1986 which became immortalised by the late Joe Cocker's music video for the song 'You can leave your hat on'.
One of the first 12" LP's I ever bought & I completely agree that this version is a must-listen. The intro in The Immaculate Collection version was lifted from this dub.
I often wonder if there’s truth behind this, but Jennifer Grey ( who was in Bloodhounds of Broadway with Madonna, and of Dirty Dancing fame ) has claimed that her failing romance with Matthew Broderick inspired Madonna to write this song. The lyric “Don’t go for second best, Baby” is a cheeky nod to her character name “Baby” Housman in Dirty Dancing. Not sure if Madonna has ever confirmed this, but Grey has told this story numerous times in interviews. Absolutely love this mix and this video. Remember watching it with a group of friends when it premiered on MTV!!
You came alive like a sunflower in the afternoon. I could feel your enthusiasm. Lol I'm not a Madonna fan but I respect how much it means to you and I just think it's great. I remember this song in heavy rotation the video is directed by David Fincher. He has kind of an airbrushed very cinematic look. He also directed Aerosmith Janie got a gun and Billy idol's Cradle of Love, The George Michael freedom video with all of the supermodels as well as Madonna's Vogue video. Always nice to see you
It seems that people who feel the need to announce "I'm not a fan of Madonna", are those who seek some kind of approval - like they want to be seen as "cool" for not liking her - "Please pick me, I want to be in the club of non-Madonna fans" when in fact, they are NOT "cool" at all. Not then, not now, not ever. It only reveals their extreme stupidity and extremely poor, unsophisticated, idiotic, uncultured, unrefined taste in music. 🤢

It’s the model petting the wet cat for me 😂 It’s interesting one her dancers for Blonde Ambition echos this male character and another sort of echos the actor who played St Martin in Like a Prayer.
The brass section playing off and on in the tubes were to match those of the album version of the song, which this was originally set to, but the Shep Pettibone remix was so popular they released it instead and as the remix had virtually a new backing created by Pettibone the video therefore seems at odds when the brass players appear
Loved watching you smiling all through this. I defy anyone not to enjoy it lol. When this was released it was the most expensive music video ever made ($5 million from her Pepsi ad payment put to good use), and is still the 3rd most expensive, with her Die Another Day at 2, and MJ's Scream at 1. On original release it still had the album version with it which is why you see a brass section in the video. It was almost immediately swapped out for the single remix version, Madonna singlehandedly taking pop music from the 80s into the 90s almost overnight with a single song remix. I love the remixes but I don't think they would have worked sonically on the album, and overall I prefer the jubilant campery of the horns. Aretha Franklin was also a big influence on Madonna. P.S. Really hoping you react to her 2016 Billboard Music Awards Prince tribute at some stage as it ties into Like a Prayer era featuring excerpts from Love Song, and some other wonderful surprises.
She'd just spent 1988 and early '89 as a brunette, done the Like A Prayer video, and was shooting Dick Tracy (as a blonde) when she shot this. She actually took time off from shooting that to film this, much to Warren's chagrin. Yes, Metropolis, Yes, David Fincher, yes, 90s über male model Cameron Alborzian playing the love interest (incidentally he was also in Elton John's "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" video along with Kate Moss--it was the 90s, models were "in" (see George Michael--Freedom! '90)). The thing that got Madonna into trouble with THIS one was the "salacious" being chained bare breasted to the bed (though you don't see anything). I always thought she looked more like a Lempicka painting in that green dress, which would make sense as owns a few Lempickas, and had previously used Lempicka portraits in the "Open Your Heart" video. The cat represented femininity and Madonna "chained herself to the bed" (that's what she says) so she's "in charge" (a recurring theme in her work). It was Fincher's idea to use the milk and she didn't want to do it. Christina Aguilera directly paid homage to this video (and a bit of "Human Nature") in her "Not Myself Tonight" video. At the time was the most expensive video ever made and is still up there along with "Bedtime Stories" and "Die Another Day", though Janet & Michael took the top spot. After this, "Cherish" seemed tame, but that's probably because it was in Black & White, she was fully clothed the whole time, and Herb Ritts had never directed a video before. While I'm here, I'll add that for "Dear Jessie" she went cartoon animation--it was all the rage. In fact the same animator, Erica Russell, worked on both "Dear Jessie" and Elton's "Club At The End Of The Street" video and it shows.

The ULTIMATE Madonna video/song/message/look. Power, fashion, confidence, sexuality. This is what comes to mind when I think, “MADONNA.”
