I was 22 and working across the Atlantic in Germany when this aired, so I saw it super late at night because of the time change. It opened the show, and my 22-year old gay self nearly had a stroke over how fabulous this was. I was doing theater at the time, so there were a lot of gay 20-somethings in our cast, and you can bet the next day, we were all like "GURRRRRRLLLLL! Did you SEE that performance?!?" They had it on the 'International news' section of one of the most respected newspapers of my country. Not even a tabloid. We didn't have cable and couldn't watch MTV and my little eleven/twelve year old gay ass was stunned and super turned on by that powerful image. Have you reacted to the original that inspired this performance? Back in 1984 with the first MTV awards when Madonna came out in a wedding dress on top of a cake, priceless! I remember when I saw this because I was on the road trip to Los Angeles with other Madonna fans and Michael Jackson fans to go to his birthday party at the orpheum. We were already hyped up about this concert and seeing him and then we saw this all together and totally lost it! Great memories!

I saw this on my tv live that night was everything I watched the red carpet entrence looks as the stars showed up for the awards and then the entire show live and this performance was and still is iconic it was the first time women kissed like that and live of all things so they couldn't bleep it cover it nothing it was the most talked about thing all year after that night!

Hi boys! Just curious how old you were when this aired, cuz I'm picturing you as little gay children just fangirling out the same way I did in the '80s over Madonna. I was 22 and working across the Atlantic in Germany when this aired, so I saw it super late at night because of the time change. It opened the show, and my 22-year old gay self nearly had a stroke over how fabulous this was. I was doing theater at the time, so there were a lot of gay 20-somethings in our cast, and you can bet the next day, we were all like "GURRRRRRLLLLL! Did you SEE that performance?!?" You're right, it was epic, and so talked about afterwards.

I saw this when it was on the MTV music awards that night and it blew my fucking mind! Brittany, Christina AND Madonna? It was WAY too much! So good. And yes the Brittany kiss was way more interesting maybe because Brit had blonde hair too? But Christina is hot as well, don't you think? Iconic is an understatement only because for us now who were younger watching this, now to us it's fucking LEDGENDARY and iconic too. Love seeing the new gen see Madge for who she was back in the day and how she made everyone else after her.

That was the last time I watched the VMAs as it lost tons of relevance after... I remember I was jumping in my bed when I saw this (I was kinda confused with the Like a Virgin cover and then when Madonna appeared I knew something big was about to happen!)... at that moment, Xtina's kiss wasn't shown to focus on JT's reaction (bummer)

Do you know where I was when I watched that kiss? In my home the next morning, going through the newspaper. They had it on the 'International news' section of one of the most respected newspapers of my country. Not even a tabloid. We didn't have cable and couldn't watch MTV and my little eleven/twelve year old gay ass was stunned and super turned on by that powerful image. It's crazy how celebrity culture was a whole other world back then and these stars really had an impact and made international news.
Anyway, I think on your Madonna journey you should watch her MTV Awards live performance of Vogue 1990. It was phenomenal and that aesthetic and choreography was so unique for a live performance in a music award show.

In the original broadcast of this performance, the Xtina and Madonna kiss was cut completely in order to get JT reaction of Britney and Madonna's, they broke uo the year before and there were rumors that Britney was cheating on Justin.
Xtiina was not happy about being cut and she say on interviews after that that Madonna and Britney were not singers that they went just for the shock value, she was pissed, cause next day everybody talks About the Madonna and Britney Kiss, and not XTINA
The video you watch is a new version where the actually shows the Xtina kiss. But for many years that video edit was not seen.
