So in this version MTV edited the video to avoid the controvesia and shows Christina kiss but the real version that went on live and you can check it all on youtube we can barely see Christina and Madonna kiss, cause they prefer to show us Justin Timberlake (a.k.a Britney ex boyfriend and trash husband material) reaction. Christina's felt ignored (she kinda was actually) and said a lot of shit about Britney, Madonna and MTV on the next day. Plus she was JT bff back then and sided with him about the breakup thing along with the fact she and Britney used to have a status of rivalry to the media. Also quick fact, Christina was so bitter about the situation so she talked shxt about Madonna and Britney in some old interviews.
I remember back in the day watching Vh1 behind the music of Britney and Christina and their different life experiences as kids and teens was so stark. Christina was kinda poor, single mom, got jumped by girls at school after singing the national anthem at a baseball game and when she went to her cousins prom everybody walked off the dance floor when they DJ played Genie in a Bottle. Britney was rich, popular at school and when her album came out her hometown threw her a parade.

To answer your question on the Britney Madonna kiss, the original broadcast had the Britney kiss filmed longer, then cut to Justin's reaction. Because of that, Christian's kiss was barely seen. Besides, Britney and Justin had just broke up and the media wanted drama.

The first song was LIKE A VIRGIN a number 1 Madonna song from the 80s. That year was the 20th anniversary of the first time Madonna performed that song at the MTV awards, so the whole set for the Like a Virgin portion of the performance, was recreated after the set Madonna had used back then. The second song "Hollywood" was a new single Madonna was releasing at the time.

The ENTIRE point of this performance was to COMMEMORATE the 20th year anniversary of MADONNAs first MTV awards appearance. That is why the STAGE was a replica of the stage MADONNA used back then, and both Britney and Christina were dressed as what was known in the 80s as "Madonna Wannabes" (which only meant Madonna Fan). Also both LIKE A VIRGIN and HOLYWOOD are MADONNAs songs, not to mention that the WHOLE PERFORMANCE was conceived and cast by MADONNA herself, who originally had PINK in mind to do Britney's part, but Pink was unable to make it to rehearsals because she was in Costa Rica at the time. None of this would have or could have happened without MADONNA, which is the only reason this was a BIG DEAL!
