This is back when the VMA's were a really big deal. It was fun. The performances were memorable and this was huge because of that kiss. Funny thing is nobody seemed to give a fck that she kissed Christina, only Britney lol.

Y'all don't understand they shut shit down after this performance. This is all anyone could talk about the next day. To be honest if they didn't show the people that was there I wouldn't know. Ask anyone old enough, you don't remember who won that night and you don't know who performed after. This is the most iconic performance in history for a reason. Madonna basically had a hand in creating these girls as performers along with Mariah, Whitney and Janet. It was so cool to her her perform with them as if she as passing the torch.
This was iconic - people couldn't stop talking about this for weeks after - because of the kisses - and poor Christina...everyone talked about Madonna kissing Britney and never mentioned that she kissed Christina too. lol. And Missy Elliot and Madonna were in gap commercials together at the time which explains the Missy tie-in to this performance.
I prefer people talk about my powerfull voice, not for a kiss.

Madonna and her two very famous, very successful backup vocals/dancers. That’s how I seen it. Even though I read they had to turn down Xtinas mic so she wouldn’t drown everyone out and how someone left Britney’s mic was on when she was supposed to be lip singing (she has gum in her mouth too). Xtina later came after both her and Beyoncé in a rollin stone interview calling them all out for not performing live.
