2001 VMA was such a lightening in the bottle moment. Everything went perfectly from production, sound, talents, the audience energy, anticipation... I'd dare say, its one of the greatest performances of the last 30 years

At the beginning of the 2000 vmas the host made a comment towards Britney saying "oops I did it again... what the *uck did you do the first time?".. I think that fuelled her performance even more that night, especially in the end when she says "ooo I did it again!" it was as though it was directed at him and anyone that doubts her. Killer performance!

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion but her 2016 VMA performance was iconic as well, it was a different tone for her and more of a solo which many can’t pull off.
I can concur with that. Britney isn't a Paula Cole or Amy Winehouse--someone who would regularly stand with a microphone and have a band behind her... Britney kinda did that. It was more avant garde but just as sensational and creative as 2001 VMA. Britney has the star talent and showmanship to pull what she wants off

Nose Candie It really was tbh. They say it’s iconic because it’s Britney Spears. I love me some Britney Spears when it’s good content and good looks but her 2016 performance was stiff asf, it was underwhelming, g easy got too much spotlight, also for not performing at the vmas in so long she should’ve done at least one entergetic song to show people she could still show some great choreography because what she did in that performance I could do in my room. Make me and gimmie more or toxic or circus or overprotected would’ve been great. But two slow songs was definitely a bad choice for a 10+ year comeback
I recorded (on vhs) the 1999 performance to learn that choreo. I was SOOOO obsessed with it that I noticed that she trips over a dancer's foot while walking backwards.

britney actually said in an interview (according to wendy williams hot topics) that she regrets the 2001 slave for you performance. she felt like she was too young to be that sexualized and regrets not standing up for herself and putting her foot down. that makes me sad.... BUT i LOVED that performance. i never realized she was so young. i always assumed she was 25 not 20.

Also for the record, I believe the choreography for I'm a slave 4 U is by Brian Friedman and Wade Robson. (Wade did a BUNCH of Britney's choreography and he's responsible for some of the most ICONIC ones from other artists as well)

Hahaha this was amazing! I looooved these when I was growing up. I remember growing up bi in a Christian household and being a Britney fan. My parents showed me a Christian documentary (They Sold Their Souls to Rock and Roll - don't watch it, there's some interesting parts to know, but it's like 4 hours, filled with Christian propaganda and a lot of it is even based on the twisting of words, like, for example them saying Britney "didn't show the raunchiest lyrics in the album booklet of her first album", by which they might mean Soda Pop, which is like not raunchy at all, or they could mean Born to Make You Happy which was originally a sexual song, but Britney didn't feel comfortable with it, so they rewrote it. All in all, don't watch it) and they had the 2000 VMAs in it and they blurred her whole body hahaha, so I remember when I said to my mom for the first time that I liked Britney, she was like: "That's the woman who performed nude right?"
Also, I remember, in my math book there was a picture of that performance as well. It didn't have anything to do with the exercises, so it was weird, but I was fangirling ofc. (Or perhaps, they wanted to make math more appealing to the kids by throwing a half naked teen pop girl idol, to appeal to both markets hahaha)
And, as for the 2003 VMA's, P!nk was also considered at the time. Plus, I kind of think this performance is a kind of karma for Christina, for everything she did right before and right after this performance. She went round to the press saying she gave Britney advice about the breakup when they met at a club, but Britney was like: Uhm no don't remember that, what I do remember is her trying to kiss me. Also, Christina went on tour with Justin at the time, right after the breakup and the last show was right after these VMA's, which is also just kinda meh if you were once best friends with Britney and still are going around telling people you are. Furthermore, she also had an award show appearance with Justin where she got out a blond blow-up doll of Britney to give to Justin, because the "writers felt like he could use it" or something like that, which also of course felt like a dig towards Britney. On top of that, probably combined with the saltiness over the reception of the performance, she went around saying the whole performance felt like gimmick and that artists like Britney aren't artists, but only live for the gimmick (BTW in that interview Christina also shaded Beyoncé and Kelly Osbourne). 2003 and 2004 really were times where Christina often took shots at Britney. Before and after that, the shots really weren't that present and now they seem to have some sort of mutual respect for each other, but not back then.
