- 20 Feet From Stardom is an Academy Award nominated documentary film directed by Morgan Neville, telling the stories of the background vocalists behind many rock and pop hits, from the Rolling Stones to Sting.
Starring Darlene Love, Judith Hill, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fisher and Táta Vega among others, it celebrates the supremely talented artists whose contributions to popular music have generally gone unnoticed.
We learn Darlene Love is credited with inventing contemporary backing singing, and as a member of the Blossoms sang on sessions for the Beach Boys and Elvis Presley. Merry Clayton provided the emotive vocals for the Rolling Stones's Gimme Shelter, and Táta Vega performed with Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson.
Sadly, many of their stories end in disillusionment with the business, when their solo careers fail to take off.

I absolutely loved Claudia Lennear. I remember when she was a vocalist with Mad Dogs and Englishmen and then with Leon Russel on his solo tour. Never has been anyone else like her.
I'm 60, been listening to Lady Grinning Soul since I was 13, and only found out about this today.
LGS is my favourite Bowie track, underrated and immense.

I was immediately striken by her beauty when I saw her on the cover of her debut album PHEW and I brought it immediately. Im sorry I never got to see her perform live. Still love you Claudia. Keep Rockin!!!!!!!

Watched 20 Feet from Stardom. Somehow her story was more heartbreaking then the rest. Maybe because she gave up on her dream at such an early age and with so much talent. I wish her all the best!!!!

Backing singers are notoriously strung along. Watch the movie Lisa Fischer has been touring with The Rolling Stones for over 25 years and lives in a small apartment.

In almost all interviews, articles, etc. they barely if ever mention her time with Leon Russell. I believe she was with him longer than with Bowie and Mick. She was on at least 2 of his albums, toured with him extensively (I saw her in his backup band) and been rumored to have had an affair with him. She wrote about her love for him at his memorial service.

What. Class act she is. I wish he had shut up and let her speak. She is fascinating to listen to and I loved her in 20 Feet to stardom. Also lover her work with the Ikettes.you had to be able to sing and really move to be in that group

Well there are slot of black people over in the UK and Listen neon areas. They are unlike the majority of American black people. Love stem to her voice. Elegant. Cultured and obviously well educated. Here are n America the liberal party makes it a point to keep them down and poor. Keeping their population in the inner cities where they don't hardly stand a chance to break out and make something of themselves. Government keeps them dependent and lied to. Sickening.

He hasn't done his homework. She dumped Mick because she didn't like the way he treated her. She's a lot more than Mick and David's ex girlfriend from long ago.
