very helpful Tips and tricks for youtuber learner to learn on your channel many thing about youtube channel growth tanks and creations Gillian I,m big fans you.
Quick Summary: 1. Having an overly long intro (1:56) 2. Lack of channel focus (2:39) 3. Copying other RUclipsrs (3:44) 4. Not having a schedule / Not being consistent (4:43) 5. Believing that consistency is the only thing that matters, quality is key! (6:51) 6. Expecting RUclips to be easy (8:10) 7. Failure to “set the scene” (9:38) 8. Having multiple titles within the title of your video (10:17) 9. Lack of creativity (bring something new to make sure you stand out) (11:55) 10. Bad/Pointless editing (keep it simple, especially in the beginning) (12:40) 11. Varying audio levels (13:46) 12. Poor audio quality (a mic goes a long way) (14:22) 13. Bad quality thumbnails (15:24) 14. Not having enough energy/confidence in the video (16:49) 15. Too much dead space (long pauses, unnecessary shots) (17:56) 16. Believing “One size fits all” (19:14) 17. Impatience (20:09) Great video, thank you Gillian!
YES! It takes me 5-7 days to shoot one recipe video from start to finish (planning, testing, filming, editing, food photos, etc.)... It’s not easy work, which is why u have to do it because you love it not for money. Great tips!
Yes, exactly! RUclips needs to serve the creator more than just money. I've only been a year but it is serving the purpose for which I started and some unexpected benefits as well. (nothing like editing your own videos to realize the things you have to work on WRT your appearance and speech!)
Yes is really true it takes a lot of effort to shoot one recipe a lot of trial and error...i confess i could not count anymore my failures but since this is my passion no room for quitting... Thank you for lifting new youtubers like me 😊❤
In regard of the focus, I don't think that RUclipsrs that do not have a specific type of content and are successful are an exception because they actually have a focus and the focus is THEMSELVES!!! They usually have explosive or charismatic personalities so they could do and say anything, people will follow them because they're brilliant, authentic, etc.. They really don't need a topic in particular. They're the "product".
No complaints from me. I'm old enough to be your dad. I have children of my own. My wife and I are just starting our RUclips adventure. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I found the most valuable point being "RUclips is a long game." When I first started I was intimated and frustrated my videos weren't performing as well as some other creators, I'm still relatively new - this is my second full month posting and consistency and playing the long game have already shown me some success! I post music reviews, songwriting advice, and sing originals and cover songs - thanks again for all these great tips!!!
The tip that I follow that you mentioned is that I look for popular topics in my niche, but I don't watch the other creators videos before hand because I want it to be my take on the subject (original).
It honestly doesn't matter what camera you use...for real. Most of my gear is inexpensive and what I could afford. High quality cameras are great if you can afford them but far too often people miss what should be the main focal point: the content. Having high quality video without a story to tell, or a good message is pointless. I've seen successful RUclipsrs with $200 cameras.
This is the first video I've seen that called out the 'double title' thing - a mistake I'm personally guilty of with some of my videos. Lots to learn on this journey, and I'm happy to have learned something here. Keep it up, Gillian!
This is awesome, my sister and I created this channel together yesterday. We will be doing a mix of vlogging, hair, nails, makeup, and so much more. Super excited.
I think better thumbnails is a huge tip. I’ve been struggling with that but I’m beginning to sort it out. All of your points were relevant and important. Thank you for this. Hi Gillian, thanks for these insights, really useful. I've been growing my channel for about 30 months (car maintenance how to's) now and reckon I've made all these mistakes at some point and am still doing a couple (the competing description thingy stuck out). I'd add an 18th [hole, lol] to the list - not being open to [constructive] criticism or feedback. This could mean being self aware enough to yell "yes, that's me" at the screen when watching videos like yours or just taking in what friends suggest. Especially be prepared to acknowledge suggestions that come from those viewers who are kind enough to take the time to make suggestions. I've only just discovered you, but I'm liking the way you present your insights. New sub here.
Thanks for all the tips :) I'm still practicing and take every tip I can get :) My channel will be about branding as a small entrepreneur - started not that long ago - and not that consistent, but now I know that's important ! thanks :D
Just started my channel, thanks for the advice! My channel focuses on personal development, some lifestyle and baking as well, its exciting to think of how I'll evolve :)
Is there a way to target certain geographic RUclips viewers for my channel? I've never seen anyone done a video talks about this. If there's a video talks about that, I would appreciate it soo much because I'm trying to gain more viewers from certain countries. Thank you!
I've done the same too in the past. I've decided to cut out the intro altogether. It was neat but felt it was unnecessary and made it more likely for viewers to click off.
@@nursebondemcanada glad I'm not the only one! Lol when creating videos, I try to think of how I feel when watching content on RUclips. Alot of times I get impatient and want to get right to the meat and potatoes, so I try to do the same for others. The bottom line is, most people on RUclips are looking for answers, and they want them asap.
Hey , I’m just wondering what editing suite you use ( might’ve been another video idea 💡) I’m starting out and so far friends are saying just use Microsoft’s movie maker . Your input wold be appreciated thanks . Love the tips .
I'm so glad you talked about volume changes. This is the most annoying thing to encounter when watching YT videos! It has deterred me from watching multiple videos from a content creator even though the content, itself, was useful.
Very informative! Starting my channel this month. Can’t wait to try your information out and see how it works when I’m live as a real channel. Thank you so much for providing this information. I will check in with you in 3-6 months and give you some feedback on these ideas.
Thanks for sharing Gillian! 💕 I definitely have and still make some of these mistakes. For example with friends I’m very confident and I am very comfortable talking with people and strangers and telling stories but in camera that doesn’t always translate the same. I make videos about my plants and other random plant experiments. Currently my humble little channel with just over 600 subscribers.
" Setting the scene" That's my problem with my last video, I and the scene look like crap. I have to build more of what I built in that video so I am going to redo it with different clothing on and in a different place. Delete the old and upload the new. For showing energy on camera, my suggestion is to make the camera your imaginary friend. Imaginary friends are always excited to hear anything you have to say, so you won't be afraid to say it! Consistency - I am in the gardening and homesteading community. Any reporting on outdoor activity I feel is time sensitive which makes things inconsistent. I try to make two videos per week but don't promise that or on which day because of that and that I don't trust my health enough to say that will be possible. oh! and thanks for saying that some of us have to actually work at being successful! I hate it when someone says "I did it so anyone can!"
Great advice! Thank you very much. I am going to work on my creativity and energy levels. I think my thumbnails are pretty good, but my content may not be good enough, since I get lots of views, but few subscribers. 😅 Can’t wait to try these out!
Just started my channel on a magical life with crafting, I just made my first, but picked up so many of you’re tips, creating a set was what I loved, and just being me, in my boho kimono, drinking my teas , I had fun, and that’s my goal.. plus giving value, on how to make a butterfly pen in two mins,,,,..I am thrilled I have a hundred views in one day , ..thankyou for your tips....I promise to show up weekly , as I love to share my designs and life..x thanks Gillian.
I’m glad I watched this! I just uploaded my first RUclips video this Wednesday and it was very different to talk at the phone and I did find myself making a couple of the mistakes you mentioned and I definitely want the rest of my videos to evolve and be better quality! Thank you for the tips!
Thanks for the tips. I follow most of them for my new RUclips channel but I need to work more on my video lighting after seeing how sharp your video is.
Thank you for the awesome tips, Gillian. I just started my RUclips channel this week after thinking about it for a couple of years. The focus is connecting romantic fiction readers and authors.
Loved this! It took me a year to hit 1000 subscribers but then only 6 months to get to 5000 I really believe there’s an exponential growth factor and it takes a long time to see the fruit of all the effort for many channels!
Some really great tips here Gillian.Working to be more consistent on my family's channel but it can be hard. We do it for fun and try to enjoy the process. Hopefully others find our videos fun and a little useful. I appreciate your honest and genuine approach. It really comes through in your videos.
I have an inspirational and motivational channel where I will be sharing a lot of practical life coaching strategies! I am really excited about my channel. Thank you for sharing your tips!
Great tips! That was very interesting and informative. I have a lot to learn about RUclips...One mistake I see lots of RUclipsrs make is talking too fast. Almost everyone talks too fast. My problem so far is talking too slow however. I need to find that healthy balance.
Mistake 18: Repetitional Video Content. I hate when people say the same things again and again, I need NEW information. New, straight, clear infos, not just glubberish talking about trivial things that I already know.
Those were some great tips, I just came across your channel today. My channel is all about woodworking. Patience is key, I lost that patience and took a year long break from RUclips and I just restarted. Thanks for your video.
Another mistake: poor grammar... When English is the person's native language and, in the first minute of the video on financial advice, I heard the phrases 'someone axed me; she don't know, etc', I closed it. I can't take your advice about handling money, if you can't handle proper grammar... in your own native language... No hating on anyone, just saying...
*RUclips is becoming more saturated than ever! GROWING AS A SMALL CHANNEL IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM A LARGE CHANNEL. Vlogging about personal life is probably not the best niche to begin with since RUclips is already flooded with vlogs, and when you don't have an existing fan base, NO ONE CARE ABOUT YOUR PERSONAL LIFE.*
I agree with you, sometimes only experience will make you a perfectionist. I know my content and storytelling, in general, is shit right now but I also know that if I don't put myself in front of the camera now and fight against my feeling now perhaps I will never do.
This was REALLY good. Had me shouting "Amen sister" about the hair and makeup LOL! Number 17 was the money tip for real. I'm super new, so I really needed to hear that. Great job. Thanks!
Yes ma’am! These were all so helpful and inspiring! I started back a few weeks ago jumping back into my channel with a mindfulness series which helps hold me accountable and gets my viewers to build community and hold each other accountable. Consistency and quality are both so crucial. This inspired me to up my game. My channel is about Hope, Health and Help. See you soon!
Thank you for sharing your experience!! I’m in between deciding to go back to work (9-5 job, uh) and staying home with my babies. (3 boys) my husband and I made a topic statement for a channel and made a list of 100 video ideas! These mistakes are great to remember as we head into this new adventure!!
Hi Gillian very useful informations. Being at around 200 subs as a brandnew youtuber i do realize, that it is really a longterm game. 1k subs seemed to be soooooo far away. Big respect for your incredible achievement of having hundreds of thousands of subsribers! Jeremy
Patience, consistancy, creativity. Each mistake has a great word of those just need to remove the negative meaning from it. Great advices Gillian! Worth watching from A to Z.
This was some great advice, thank you Gillian! I'm definitely going to keep these things in mind when doing future videos on my channel. I do comedy and voice impression videos, which is kind of hard to be original in I feel because there are sooooo many RUclipsrs that do voice impressions lol. But I'm giving it my best shot to be creative and original as I can be in that medium, I think for me my biggest hurdles are trying to be consistent and putting out more content.
This is a very helpful video, Gillian! Especially for those who wanted to start their online venture. Bein an Affiliate Marketer and online entrepreneur, social media is very important for me because I get to use it to promote my business.
Great post, Gillian. We are just getting started and definitely agree about the "long game". It'll be a long time before we even come close to producing the amount of content we've got planned, lol. Thanks for your input and upfront presentation.
Having a topic and being consistent in posting videos are the key takeaways for me. My most successful video was of a hotel room. I never expected that. I want to have a channel but I know that commitment is my biggest challenge. Thanks for the encouragement. "RUclips is a long game".
The biggest problem for me is when folks play music and speak - all at same level. I simply can NOT hear anything but noise .. Also, as Im 156 cm tall, my daily life is to look UP .. into peoples noses, not a pleasant sight. Many youtubers set their camera so we see right into their nostils, DONT ! It is the eyes we want to see. TY Gillian, very clear video :)
Heyy Gillian, I understand what you're saying and why buttttt I do think that this video could very easily put people off their video making dreams. I just watched a Think Media video on a similar topic and in it the guy said that it doesn't matter at what level you are, you should START MAKING VIDEOS, even if they're no good - get yourself out there ! I resonated soooo much more with his advice, it felt much more real. In some points your advice is a bit too harsh for new RUclipsrs. If they're NEW RUclipsrs where are they going to have the skills to edit perfect videos and amazing content (which you said they should have) unless they start by making mistakes and crap content ? Love Amy
All important aspects are in one video. Great, Gillian! It takes our Educational channel for Kids 2 weeks for each video to shoot, compile, edit, animate, fix the audio track, add logos/endings, translate into the 2nd language, and then publish. Whew!

Thanks for all the tips :)
I'm still practicing and take every tip I can get :)
My channel will be about branding as a small entrepreneur - started not that long ago - and not that consistent, but now I know that's important ! thanks :D
Just started my channel, thanks for the advice! My channel focuses on personal development, some lifestyle and baking as well, its exciting to think of how I'll evolve :)
My channel is just what ever videos i want to do!

Hi I'm from Pakistan
Really appreciate your videos! I’m excited to start a RUclips channel this year and found your channel and am loving the help!🤗
Rachael Milne me too! I started this year
Aww thanks so much!! I am trying hard to make my RUclips channel do good this year! I am only at 79 subs, and I am super exited to grow!!
Omg congrats on almost 200!
Thanks..with all my best wishes for you and your followers .. I am following you from Egypt
This was a mini course on RUclips! Loved it.
Is there a way to target certain geographic RUclips viewers for my channel? I've never seen anyone done a video talks about this. If there's a video talks about that, I would appreciate it soo much because I'm trying to gain more viewers from certain countries. Thank you!
I just started a channel, thanks for the advice! 🙌🏻
Star & Miguel me too boo confrats!!!
Star & Miguel subscribed! I’m giving away free necklaces to all my subscribers y’all!
thankyou so much this helped a lot as im struggling getting views on my singing videos at the min so I am going to work on these tips! x
Oops, done the long intro. Working on all the mistakes we've made...♥
I've done the same too in the past. I've decided to cut out the intro altogether. It was neat but felt it was unnecessary and made it more likely for viewers to click off.
@@GlitzGlamTVProductions me too
@@nursebondemcanada glad I'm not the only one! Lol when creating videos, I try to think of how I feel when watching content on RUclips. Alot of times I get impatient and want to get right to the meat and potatoes, so I try to do the same for others. The bottom line is, most people on RUclips are looking for answers, and they want them asap.
Love the advice! I started my own channel last month, and the things you mentioned really works! Thank you!
Good tips! I have a faith based channel that I just started recently and I agree 100%
Oh nice! My channel is not faith based, but I am a religious person myself. I will check out some of your videos 🤗
@@kristynjones4760 thank you!😊 I plan to update soon, but just moved recently.
I like that your emphasize consistency in terms of personal growth and getting better at making videos!
Hey , I’m just wondering what editing suite you use ( might’ve been another video idea 💡) I’m starting out and so far friends are saying just use Microsoft’s movie maker . Your input wold be appreciated thanks . Love the tips .
G Mark Nolan my husband swears by adobe premiere pro!
I'm so glad you talked about volume changes. This is the most annoying thing to encounter when watching YT videos! It has deterred me from watching multiple videos from a content creator even though the content, itself, was useful.
learned that I definitely need to bring more consistency. Thanks for the great tips girl!!
Thank you so much for all the tips!! Thinking about making a RUclips channel but have no idea where to start.. these tips are very helpful ❤️
By the way, I don´t even have 100 subs yet, but I can do custom thumbnails, so that must've changed.
Joyful Living I just subscribed to your channel 😘
@@QveenJvzzy can you be the part of my RUclips channel as Subscriber,😃
Im trying 2 make my 1st video
You have more subs than me though, and right now you got ME as additional to your subs as well 😉 As long as there's life, there's hope hahahaha
yes i noticed that too!!
Very informative! Starting my channel this month. Can’t wait to try your information out and see how it works when I’m live as a real channel. Thank you so much for providing this information. I will check in with you in 3-6 months and give you some feedback on these ideas.
My MENTOR ❤️❤️ Thank you for the great Tips always
You're welcome!
😅 Can’t wait to try these out!
ahaha!!! 'for the rest of us mortals'!!! Love it!
Great name! It made me check it out!
This is really amazing content!!
Thank you for all the great info for new youtubers!!
Thank you so much for all the information you share with us! It really means a lot! 😊 🙏
*_THIS IS VERY HELPFUL!_*
I’m glad I watched this! I just uploaded my first RUclips video this Wednesday and it was very different to talk at the phone and I did find myself making a couple of the mistakes you mentioned and I definitely want the rest of my videos to evolve and be better quality! Thank you for the tips!
Fitness, Entertainment, and food :3 just started; editing def some stuff to learn loved the genuine vid!
Good luck with your channel! I’ve subscribed to you 😊 x

"For the rest of us mortals...." 😂
Sometimes we think we need new information, when actually we already know what we need to know, and it's time to just put it into practice.
@@gillianzperkins Great advice, thanks!
I showed up for the hair and got some amazing tips for my channel. Thanks for all you do Gillian.
I need to think of my background, I have to figure that out.
I'm still trying to figure out that too.
Those were some great tips, I just came across your channel today. My channel is all about woodworking. Patience is key, I lost that patience and took a year long break from RUclips and I just restarted. Thanks for your video.
im a new youtuber so this was really handy thankyou!!
any new youtubers here in sept 19??
Thanks a lot for such educational tips, Gillian. I am about to start a RUclips channel, and i needed this.
You are very friendly and sincere. Thanks from Pakistan. :)
I'm from Pakistan
You are amazing.. this video is very informative and there's no single ad to interrupt me. Cool!!!
Leave it dear... Come let us grow together...God bless you
Thank you Gillian. I'm a new subscriber to your channel and YES I hit the bell button. Best endeavors to you!😊
*RUclips is becoming more saturated than ever!
I agree! It's really tough to stand out from the crowd with personal vlogs.
I agree with you, sometimes only experience will make you a perfectionist. I know my content and storytelling, in general, is shit right now but I also know that if I don't put myself in front of the camera now and fight against my feeling now perhaps I will never do.
Any new youtuber wanna be friends?
Yes I’m a new RUclipsr! Please subscribe
This was REALLY good. Had me shouting "Amen sister" about the hair and makeup LOL! Number 17 was the money tip for real. I'm super new, so I really needed to hear that. Great job. Thanks!
Same!!! Lol
@@nattybaftercancer3723 😆
Thanks for this! Some super great tips, that other channels aren't offering, also your eyes are wild in this video!! : )
Whew!
These tips were unlike ones I’ve heard before and actually sound helpful. I’ll be implementing them to my channel. Thank you!
Thank you Gillian for all your awesome content! You are the first RUclips influencer I watched when I started working on my channel more seriously last year and you've been a constant companion. This is great stuff. Thank you!
