Yes, recording is really tough, and you can easily get annoyed with yourself for messing up and having to repeat things. Biggest tip I give for people is to stay patient, and expect that recording say a 10 minute video may take you 1 hour or it could be 15 minutes. Just be patient, get it done, and you'll be glad you followed through. Great insights and tips here, Gillian!
Hi, i started my channel on Sept 1, 2019. I’ m the Oldest RUclipsr in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷. Thanks to Your tips and experience and sharing with us. I have gotten to work on my channel at 63. Hope to keep growing. I will be watching you . 🙋🏽♂️
Gillian, I'm absolutely binge-watching your videos. Your are making the daunting and intimidating process of starting a RUclips Channel more achievable for the "ordinary" people and newbies like me. Thank you so much for all your advice. It is short and sweet and so to the point. Perfect.
I LOVE that you included outtakes! I've been doing that on my videos now for a couple months too, and it gets a really good response. It's been great watching your filming journey and how you've improved so much. Makes me feel like there's hope for my awkward self lol.
Fantastic. Not only did you provide an excellent example of a well-scripted video, but you gave me exactly what I was looking for, bam... bam... bam... I liked your closure too, and took some notes on that to use in my videos as well. Well done, Gillian!
Gillian I wish I could give you a big hug! I have just started a business this year (Happy Healthy Kids Australia) and although I have had people already complete my workshops, I was at such a loss when it comes to marketing and filming online courses etc. and I was starting to feel a little down and overwhelmed about the whole thing. I have literally just binge-watched a handful of your videos and I'm excited and motivated to put them into action. Your videos are so clear and well explained. Thank you for helping me get out of a rut :) Thank you for sharing your incredible knowledge with the world!
Gillian, I love you! Just a few videos I have watched of yours have helped me tremendously. I am now publishing books because of you! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you do.
Omgsh I have been searching for months looking for someone that I followed to show the editing process and how to get to that point. Thank you for this!
i do the same way, scripting - same process - rough ideas to bullet points, but I do add sub points also at time. and I record continuously and later just remove. Simple. i liked the video very much. appreciate your presentation
I script my videos from start to finish and honestly i must say it looks and feels like I'm reading or memorized it to just dump and move ahead and usually i feel a little tense filming because i don't want to miss a word. Thank You for these tips, bulleting to elaborate during the video will probably make me feel more relaxed.
I've watched 0:57 min of your video and i want to say THANK YOU!!!! I have been looking for a video that helps explain how to write/get a good youtube video script going. Also you just vulnerably admitted that the entire process isn't this single cut process. The fact that you're honest and real makes me trust what you're about to speak about in the rest of this video. Looking forward to taking notes. Thanks so much!!!
This video is so helpful! I just started trying to film videos, but being struggled with hesitating. I'm so glad to see your video before I jump into over-scripting. Your video will save tons of my time, thank you so much!
Gillian, How exactly do you transfer the footage to your editor? Do you use a cloud service or do you send a physical drive? And what’s the range of turnaround time from footage with your editor to published video?
Thank you so much for including some of your redos! I tried to make a video and got discouraged because I thought that I sounded so awkward compared to youtubers I watch but it’s refreshing to know that youtubers don’t say things perfectly the first time 🙌🏼
Struggling but Trying I once saw Video Creators go live WHILE recording their next video. The redos were constant and epic. It was hilarious because it was so familiar! 😂 Might be worth it to see if it’s still live!
This video just changed my life. As someone just starting out and just recording my first videos, it’s been really helpful. Thank you for sharing your behind the scenes.
Bless your soul! I droned on for 25 minutes last night for what was supposed to be about a 5-6 minute video. Notes taken, subscribed! Gonna incorporate your tips and give it another go tonight.
You are giving me a good glimpse of video production process. I am beginning to get it. I am 3 videos into my second youtube channel, and your videos are helping me greatly. Thank you!
I mirror-flip Powerpoint slides with bullet points using ppt mirror App and use them in a teleprompter to keep my conversation on target without reading a script to keep my eyes directly into the camera lens.
I have struggled with this since I started my small channel because I wanted to look natural to the camera but did not script anything at all. The bullet points make so much sense now, thank you for the advice!
These tips always work for NATIVE speakers. If I speak in my own language, I don't need anything, not even a bullet point script. I have it all in my head. When it comes to a foreign language (and English is my fourth language only), I can't keep it in my mind - all of it, the script, the bullets, and the grammatics. And the words that would suit the sutiation better. So I prefer it to have outlined (the entire script), then look in every time I need to record. I don't look for every word or sentence, instead, I'm only looking through the passage - and then tell it close to the text. SInce I've written it myself, I almost know it by heart. This is the way that works for NON-NATIVE speakers.
Gillian, such useful information on scripting. Thanks for sharing. 💕 Truth, for literally years I did not script my videos whatsoever, and while this led to me eventually feeling fairly confident talking to a camera and speaking naturally, it also led to some pretty rambling and probably boring videos at times. Then I tried scripting the whole thing like you talk about. I like this since it gives the chance to say everything as I wish to say it, one issue is that writing I consider to be one of my strengths, probably much more than public speaking. Therefore I might write this great script but it does lead to all the awkwardness filming it, looking at my notes on camera (yikes) and so on. I don’t know why I never tried bullet points before, but I’m definitely giving this a go for my next video! 💕xo
Thank you, Gillian. That was brilliant: you covered some really crucial aspects that I'd been puzzling over for some time. My objective is not to create RUclips videos (not for mass consumption) but rather to make videos for my nearest and dearest, videos that don't totally suck (which mine do, I'll admit it). The bullet-point suggestion is gold. That, and how to actually do a shoot (keep the camera rolling). Superb video - thank you ever so much for it!!
I was watching raw footage for a video I'm making and realized, I was very disorganized (and some undesirable things in my background). I knew I had to re-shoot a good portion of it and needed to focus. That's how I found your video. Great video! All I needed to hear was this is similar to giving presentations. I did a fair amount of presentations in college and sometimes at a previous job. I always prepared bullet points beforehand. I found myself rambling after pressing record for my YT channel. I'm going to work on "organizing" my thoughts more and making bullet points (like I used to do!) Thank you for the steering!!!
Ha! I have experience with public speaking and did Toastmasters for a few years, your process sounds similar to the one I used for speeches…. And then you mentioned that your process works for public speaking!! Glad to hear that I’m on the right track.
So cool and natural. No BS. This kind of information is invaluable - the nuts and bolts of producing videos. It's work, just like a real business needs to organize, market, and sell. Good stuff!
I learned a lot from the topics at hand, but I now feel comfortable with the information from watching your outtakes. You opened up to us and now I do not feel like I am the only person who messes up like that and have to redo... Thank you for sharing that! I got this!!!!!
Great job, Gillian. Just started making cooking videos and am totally enjoying it. I have not made them public, however. Need to do something with all this time we have now with THE VIRUS out there. I love love to cook and I want to inspire others to do the same..I am 75 and doing everything myself. Have figured a lot out on my own but love all your hints...you are a wonderful speaker....thank you for doing this. Be safe young lady.
👍👍👍I totally agree Gillian that both, fully scripting or just winging it, are not the most effective ways to connect with our audiences. Plus, like you mentioned, it can get really hard to get our minds to be creative and flowing if we're too busy just desperately trying to quickly memorize and speak those words into the camera. It's so much more natural and authentic when we can just relax and speak to our audience individually. More enjoyable to film and watch. You're brain storming idea is a really great one. It really helps to get everything out and then organize into specific bullet points. I found that really helpful especially when I was doing my coma series. So much happened during my coma and I wanted to make sure I made it all relevant and interesting/inspiring to my audience. Using the mind dump method helped me get it all out and then I was able to organize the different themes into specific videos and scripts that followed a much better pace. * What it was like to be in a coma *what the coma nightmares were like *what it's like to wake up from a coma *and what it's like to keep on living after a coma and accepting new physical hurdles/disabilities Gillian, you are a constant inspiration. You always deliver immediately useable insights that we can all model after. Thank-you🤗🥰
It's so funny cus I was actually just over scripting for my video I'm about to shoot and I thought to myself that there's gotta be a better way and then I found myself watching this video and so far, I'm hooked. Thanks, Gillian.
Tha outtakes at tha end are so relatable lol.. I've created my 1st two videos this month and it's reassuring to see someone with your success show that you mess up as well.. tha information/advice in this video is very valuable.. Thanks for your knowledge and vulnerability
Thank you for showing me how to script my videos properly. I have always been doing a lot of freestyling and wasted lots of time doing alot of editing to make it less messy. Thank you so much for this video :)
Hey Gillian--Thank You So Much For This Video! I have perfected my area of expertise for the last 25 or so years, and I want to educate the WORLD about it on RUclips and with a Blog. When it comes to speaking to the camera vs tutorials, I am going to save so much time not stopping and re-starting taping. my videos. Thank you! Great tip!
This is exactly the topic I’d been wondering so much about! Scripting my videos is what I’m most self conscious about at this stage. This helps me stay reasonable and focused on what’s important. 🙏
I love that she showed the removal of the bloopers. Still working on some self-shortcuts to identify where the bloopers are during editing without having to watch my own content 500x
I am giving you a thumbs up just on the little editing blooper reel you showed right before the 2 min mark. I may have been naive cause I thought something was wrong with me cause my first attempts at making videos seemed like I was making lots and lots of mistakes and required lots of editing and so that little bit of cute honesty from you made me feel less bad about myself and my first attempts. Thank You!!!!
That was THE most generous RUclips video I've ever viewed. Thank you. I'm heading over to your workshop soon. You have inspired, enthused and excited me about bringing my valuable message to student Paramedics. I look forward to the workshop. Joe
Wow. Watched a few of your videos. I have watched 100s since 2017 (learning). Your videos are super clear, to the point. Thank you. Finally, in 2002 and 2023, finally making videos.
Thank you for sharing this. I have a long way to go, but I'm determined and getting better. One thing I have trouble with, and I noticed some of it in this video too, is the "jump" effect when you edit out the filler words. I'm trying so hard to eliminate that, and there might be some improvement, but wow, is it hard.

Some great tips! I've always worked from a full script as it helps me control where the story and the video is going.
OKAY but honestly this is now one of my new favorite vids... Who else agrees?
~ A small youtuber

Me too🥰
I do.
It was unnecessary to put “A small RUclipsr”
Yea for the small peeps!!! I got you
Gillian, I'm absolutely binge-watching your videos. Your are making the daunting and intimidating process of starting a RUclips Channel more achievable for the "ordinary" people and newbies like me. Thank you so much for all your advice. It is short and sweet and so to the point. Perfect.
You're brilliant! Love the editing in this vid.
Knowledge is power. Thank you for sharing. Have a great weekend. 👍
The way you filmed you editing and panning out is honestly one of the coolest things I've seen on RUclips! Even your mistakes look polished!
This is by far my favorite video for “how to script” super easy, relaxed, and effective! ⭐️😁
Thank you!
Do you have any editing videos for beginners?
I love your videos. They're so packed with knowledge. Thank you so much.
Very inspiring! Good tips indeed on Editing and lightings, speaking with bullet points.

Way to go. Thank you for being so transparent. This will surely help me write scripts faster.
You are so natural and transparent... Love it!
Thank you so much for putting this out. I loved how you put in bloopers and editing clips. Thanks for the tips. Keep filming!

Holy shit, Gillian! Everything you’re posting is exactly what I needed as I’ve been needing it lmao! Thank you!

Thanks Gillian for sharing!! Really helps to know I’m alone with the fumbles and to keep going!!

Bullet points are the best way to go! I also do this on my channel and has improved my content a lot and my confidence too. Great tips!
I mirror-flip Powerpoint slides with bullet points using ppt mirror App and use them in a teleprompter to keep my conversation on target without reading a script to keep my eyes directly into the camera lens.
I give you props. Speaking from the hip on the outline is how the best professional speakers do it.
I have struggled with this since I started my small channel because I wanted to look natural to the camera but did not script anything at all. The bullet points make so much sense now, thank you for the advice!
This video is gold. It answered all the questions I had. Thanks a lot.

love this! I've been binge watching videos on how to script videos. thanks for showing us the behind the scenes!
Great content! Quick question: what’s the most efficient way to share the video with a non local assistant for them to edit it?
Thank you, Gillian. That was brilliant: you covered some really crucial aspects that I'd been puzzling over for some time. My objective is not to create RUclips videos (not for mass consumption) but rather to make videos for my nearest and dearest, videos that don't totally suck (which mine do, I'll admit it). The bullet-point suggestion is gold. That, and how to actually do a shoot (keep the camera rolling). Superb video - thank you ever so much for it!!
Best and informative video I’ve seen so far on scripting!
Glad you enjoyed it!
You’re changing my life for the better!🍒❤️
I was watching raw footage for a video I'm making and realized, I was very disorganized (and some undesirable things in my background). I knew I had to re-shoot a good portion of it and needed to focus. That's how I found your video. Great video! All I needed to hear was this is similar to giving presentations. I did a fair amount of presentations in college and sometimes at a previous job. I always prepared bullet points beforehand. I found myself rambling after pressing record for my YT channel. I'm going to work on "organizing" my thoughts more and making bullet points (like I used to do!)
Thank you for the steering!!!

You are best speaker hands down. Also you get right to the point.
Loved this video. The bloopers at the end was fun to watch. Thanks for posting.
I'm finally starting to transition to the bullet point method. Thanks for the clarity Gillian and for being "real". Great stuff.
* What it was like to be in a coma
*what the coma nightmares were like
*what it's like to wake up from a coma

Gillian, you are a constant inspiration. You always deliver immediately useable insights that we can all model after.
Thank-you🤗🥰
Great video and info thank you

WOW Super transparent maan. You are awsome, all the way from the UK ! This just gave me so much more confidence
Thanks Gillian.. for your awesome simple and compact tips.

When it comes to speaking to the camera vs tutorials, I am going to save so much time not stopping and re-starting taping. my videos. Thank you! Great tip!
Awesome suggestions. Thanks
I love that you showed the editing part so ppl realize how much work it is
This is exactly the topic I’d been wondering so much about! Scripting my videos is what I’m most self conscious about at this stage. This helps me stay reasonable and focused on what’s important. 🙏
Gillian Perkins I love you so much, your an inspirational to me and your the reason why I want to make my own channel.
I love that she showed the removal of the bloopers. Still working on some self-shortcuts to identify where the bloopers are during editing without having to watch my own content 500x
Thanks Gillian for sharing the great tips. Would you please share your editing software and filming equipment?
I am giving you a thumbs up just on the little editing blooper reel you showed right before the 2 min mark. I may have been naive cause I thought something was wrong with me cause my first attempts at making videos seemed like I was making lots and lots of mistakes and required lots of editing and so that little bit of cute honesty from you made me feel less bad about myself and my first attempts. This is really useful, Gillian, for someone who just started a few months ago. Thanks for being so open, warts and all...
this is seriously very helpful.. and i really like the way u talk and make engagement with the audience..
what apps do you use?
Wow. Watched a few of your videos.
I have watched 100s since 2017 (learning).
Your videos are super clear, to the point.
Thank you. Finally, in 2002 and 2023,
finally making videos.
You got this! ❤️
Thank you for this video Gillian! This was great :)
Thank you for sharing this. I have a long way to go, but I'm determined and getting better. One thing I have trouble with, and I noticed some of it in this video too, is the "jump" effect when you edit out the filler words.
