      I wouldn't blame them for not wanting to mess with it. A fire like that on the outside of a steam locomotive could have easily weakened the boiler, making it more susceptible to fatigue failure. Even if they did a complete check of the boiler for cracks, it won't tell them what areas of steel have been embrittled by the rapid temperature change. It's at best, an art piece for whoever's got the money and storage space to try and visually restore it.

      @@jacobrzeszewski6527 It's still disappointing to see it being neglected and in disrepair, I'm sure they could fix it up somehow, they have the money they're just not willing to spend it on the things that are actually interesting and important pieces of history.

      @regularguy7266 Год назад +1

      Stupidest rumor for a mystery that was already solved. Ross loves all steam locomotives, which is why he restored some of them in the first place. If he was already thinking about replacing 2101 with 614 in the Chessies Excursions and Tours, then he could've just donated the locomotive or stored it somewhere else when the time was right. Steve Wickersham, one of the main engineers/fireman/machinists who worked on 2101 during the American Freedom Train and Chessie Steam Special, stated in a article that the roundhouse fire was because the faulty wiring inside of the roundhouse.

    If this is coal fired engine, can it be converted to natural gas to pollute less?

    • @James-Railyard
      @James-Railyard Год назад +2

      Last time a Reading T1 (like the engine in this video) was converted to oil they nearly toasted the firebox to the point of retiring the engine permanently. Thankfully the group restoring it remove that oil burning crap and have returned her to a proper anthracite burning engine once again.
      Just note, if the stack has anything other than steam coming out of the stack, it’s either cleaning the tubes and flues with sand or they just got done loading the box with fuel for a climb or after a climb. Other factors also play there.

    • @davidhoffman1278
      @davidhoffman1278 Год назад +1

      That's going to be a huge and very expensive insulated , impact resistant tank car you're going to need to safely carry all that liquidfied propane or liquidfied natural gas. In addition you would have to extensively change the entire firebox and water heating system. Easily $10, 000, 000+ USD for the special tank car to hold the liquified fuel $100,000,000 USD to Engineer, design, and implement the firebox and steam generation system.

    • @coloradostrong
      @coloradostrong Год назад +1

      No. They are actually studying the feasibility of it burning plastic bags, straws, cutlery ware, Styrofoam plates, and cups. The weight savings will be tremendous. Sea turtles with metal straws attached to their shells have been trained to push the oil based products into the firebox. Any incomplete combustion in the firebox will be reignited by the sea turtles pushing oily rags into the firebox, kept on hand for that purpose. The scientists discovered that Styrofoam products produce the most smoke, soot, and ash, so they recommended using those products to get the most dramatic results for any bystanders. More of a visual impact if you will. The fire will be kept burning regardless if the train will be used or not. A Gallup Pole found that most people love seeing all of that black smoke and soot as a reminder of better times and days. All of the spent fuel will be cleaned out of the firebox at the end of each day, and dumped into the nearest pond, stream or lake to keep costs down. If those aren't available, the fireman is required to take the used fuel and dump it into any sewer drain or manhole cover, since all cleanup of that water has already been paid for by idiotic storm water fees, environmental fees and the like. Trees that seem to be in the right-of-way, whether they are or not, will be cut down 100 yards away in each direction, to allow better airflow around the train to keep the black soot and smoke action in an upward motion. Over cutting of the trees also forces any "protected" species out, away from harm. Should the "protected" animal/bird/gnat/frog/ try to rebuild again within the area, giant Russian jet engines on railcars will be brought in to burn away anything within a 600 foot area. If needed, additional track will be laid to accommodate a wider area for the Russian jet burning railcars, to help encourage any wildlife to _move along_. I hope that helps answer your question.
