  • "Enough is when your stomach is full, enough is when you're warm and you have time to love each other, to communicate, that's enough." One with nature, Roni Cohen's self-sufficient home and garden is everything he ever hoped for.
    subscribe: ab.co/Gardening...
Roni and Cathy Cohen experienced the Kangaroo Island bushfires in early 2020, after this story was filmed.
    Fire threatened their property twice.
The second time a large part of the property burnt, but they were able to save their house, two netted orchards and some of the vegetation near the house.
    ---
Roni runs a self-sufficient productive farm, with a large enclosed edible garden with raised beds, large pots and fruit trees.
Behind the house in an old milking shed Roni produces and extracts honey from multiple hives of Ligurian bees.
The house itself was hand built using mud bricks and rammed earth. The uprights were made from fallen timber, foraged and repurposed.
"I don't like straight lines," Ronnie says, "there are no straight lines in nature." They try to blend in to share their property with the birds and spiders and other visitors, though they try to keep the inside to themselves.
Roni was born on the Gaza strip in a refugee camp, surrounded by barbed wire. He grew up on a kibbutz, Karmia, in Israel where he learnt to plant vegie gardens and trees.
For Ronnie, this self-sufficient haven, tucked away on Kangaroo Island is a dream come true.

This should be a 1hr doc. Such lovely haven. And i love his definition of enough.

This is beautiful, what a great story. All Australians should be self sufficient, plant trees and take a leaf out of Roni's book. I believe we all should disconnect from social media and electronic devices and reconnect with nature.

I absolutely loved this video. Truly, it is my favourite you have ever shared. With the changing climate, and indeed the changing world, I would love if you shared more features like this, to help inspire us all to make shifts towards sustainability and self sufficiency. Also - slightly envious of Sophie that she got to visit this spot! I hope they recover after the fires, and the surrounding bush is able to regenerate 🙏🏼

Great! Any chance to know the dimensions of the netted orchards? Especially height?

Once the population explosion gets there, the wilderness and wildlife will be in peril.

Its a small island, access only by ferry. Most of it national park, not going to happen.

I love his philosophy for what's enough in life! Full stomach, warm clothes, and time with loved ones! I would just add shelter then what more do you need!

I need more info. I want to know more about their property and what that contraption was with the honey? I feel like you do a lot of great stories but they just are not long enough. Can we do some follow-ups? longer documentary length videos? Or links to businesses or passion projects, anything really. My stomach doesn't feel full yet ;)

What an awesome video. I'm on the some page and growing as much as I can and in the near future hope to be around 70 percent self sufficient. It make me wonder what difference it would make if only 50% of people would start to live live this.
