Hilariously, this set is indicative of the “quirkiness” of these vans IRL! “Be careful when you move it or something may fall off.” Great review as always, thanks Jang!
Jang, thanks for the review! As somebody who has this set I totally agree with you that it’s an advanced model. To put it in context, it took me about 3 days to build a fully-RC Technic set 42129 Zetros, whereas the T2 model took me 5 (!) days to build. And both sets have similar piece count. I think that alone tells how crazy this set is. I’ve also had issues with the steering mechanism, the little tan gear tends to come off the axle, and to fix that I had to go through the ‘devastation’ of rebuilding the entire front end of the car. Moreover, the wheels literally bend on the axles a bit under the pressure of nearly 2 kilo’s worth of plastic:) That said, I still think it’s one of the best Expert (or 18+) cars to date, I love all the functional details and the interior space feels very realistic and old-school.
This was basically me; having not touched lego since I was a small child I picked this for my first set in 25 years. 👀 I encountered pretty much all the problems you mentioned, especially that devastating front end implosion. I hoped as I rebuilt it I’d figure out where I went wrong so it was a bit disappointing to find it is just permanently temperamental. I do have a background that involves model making so I’m sure that did probably help; I was less bothered by having to rebuild than a lot of people might be. But for all that I loved building it, and thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. There are def things I’d change (also a rack for the surfboard would’ve killed them?) but I finished it and promptly went out and bought more lego so. . .
I'd say the blue tank represents a gas tank for the stove? Page 137, step 180 is when that is placed and there is a text comment about propane gas tank!
@@JANGsLEGOreviews Very good review. I'm not interested in getting the set, as I only collect modular buildings, but I always enjoy your videos! Shame that this one had so much "unpolished" stuff in it, but it looks very nice otherwise.
Maybe Lego, in addition to the age group rating, should introduce a scale for how advanced the build experience is. I guess they sort of did that by calling it "creator expert" for example, but it could be expanded upon. Maybe just a 1 to 10 scale. At the top of that scale you would find things like this set where extra care is required during assembly and handling of the final product. It could also be an opportunity to have advanced models without the multiple colored parts that show through from the interior, at the top level builders should be able to put stuff like that together without the color-coding. Like you touch upon in this review, just because you are an adult doesn't mean this set is for you, you also need to be an experienced Lego builder to appreciate it. Likewise, if you are super experienced you don't actually need to be 18+.
I have the Lego Mustang and the Porsche on display. A Camaro would be nice, but I'd prefer an italian sports car next. I know there is the 10248 Ferrari F40, but it's no longer sold and also it's a different scale.
@@deeznuts23yearsago or a challenger.they made a technic charger not long ago so I think that's be off the table.but a challenger ta in the same colour scheme as the recent speed champions. I wouldn't say no to a creator skyline or a 98 supra though
As a former Bay Window bus owner I can assure you the real canvas was tricky to fold down. The blue bottle is probably propane for the stove. The canopy goes up like a later 70s bus so there are anachronisms all over the place.
I have come to rely on your inept reviews to decide wether or not to buy and build. They have always been a great help which I thank you for. Ì have had legos since a child and now as a grandma build with my grandkids. Such fun together. Thankyou for all the work you do for these reviews. It is greatly appreciated.
This was the most frustrating build ever. The big Sian was my most difficult build. However the Sian was incredibly solid, the difficulty coming from the concentration required to ensure you built it correctly. The T2, though, seemed to fall apart if you sneezed. The steering wheel mechanism kept detaching ( I actually solved this by adding a small mosaic piece with the 'philips' indent to the folding joint piece and now is perfect steering!) The front end breaks away. The back window butresses break away. The engine constantly broke off parts. (A big tip - make the engine the very last thing you build. It's removable anyways, but if you do it at the stage as per the instruction book, it WILL come apart.) The back door was the worst part though. If you slipped the two door spokes from their holes the back end would crumble. And as you fitted the roof there was a danger of the backdoor falling out. This is heightened by the whole largely complete build having to be tipped upside down resting on the roof area towards the end when parts are either loose or stressed when upright. I got there in the end and it does look good but, man, never have I had a build have substantial parts comig away in my hands before. Weirdly, the sliding door and the telescopic roof are the easiest parts of the build and the most solid! If you take nothing else away from this ... build the engine as the very last thing you do.
Thanks for another thoughtful and thorough review, Jang. I agree with all the build and structural issues you pointed out. I found the assembly of the top corners around the front windscreen to be the most problematic, because you are trying to connect plates where the force to push them together can result in the mounting piece being dislodged if you don't hold them just right. Took me a few tries before I finally found the technique to hold everything and bring it all together. After a few more steps, the top was more secure, but it never felt as strong as other LEGO vehicle builds. I do like the finished model, especially the sliding door and the interior kitchenette area. I'm not bothered by the overhang of the white part of the body, and think the blue is a good color choice (although most of ones you see in real life are much more faded and not shiny ;-). As you said, this set is not for an inexperienced or casual builder - you need to be attentive during the construction or you will have a very frustrating time - and after it's built you need to handle it with care.
Very cool to watch such a balanced and detailed review from an experienced Lego builder and reviewer about a set that has had such a wide variety of comments. I really appreciate all the little tips about what to do and what not to do with the set in order to keep it intact. The final recommendations are very, very helpful. Sounds like this set could have benefitted from the old style "Creator Expert" label on the box. Thank you for taking the time to explain the set so thoroughly!
Thank you for another excellent, clear, and honest review. I have held off getting this set as I keep visualising one of those square boxy yellow school buses. I have the T1 which I think is a spot-on representation. But after watching your review, you have thrown down the gauntlet for a LEGO build. I enjoy building for the 'engineering' value of discovering how the designer has worked it out. I'm not fussed with the playability, the constructability is what drives my LEGO collection.
Love the channel. Loved the build. Made me a better builder! I fully agree with your opening comments. The balance of techniques and part usage taken from each Lego system and used to create what is probably the most “ hybrid” set created to date. Definitely a challenge, but after a few tear downs and looking away from the instructions and into the assembly, my finished product functions perfectly. Was almost able to eliminate the roof gap entirely. It sits ~90%flush when closed. Also think the canister in the right cupboard is meant to portray a propane tank for the stove. Like how you had the surfboard in there. I ended up putting a modified roof rack borrowed from the Creator VW Bug set. Thanks for continuing to provide awesome content for my favorite Lego review channel!
Always love Jang's Creator Expert vehicle reviews. They're my favourite Lego line of sets and that's partly because of his reviews. Even though I like the roundedness of the T1 more, I like how smooth this is on the sides. I didn't like the cut out bits for the doors on that one but to be fair it was from 10 years ago
I recall at one point while building this, as I was adding tiles to one side of the van, I had to remove the interior countertop/cupboard area in order to add pressure to some pieces to properly add the tiles on. Make no mistake, I do really love the final look of this set, but I 100% agree that it feels like a MOC build rather than a 2021 Lego Set with their current buildings standards.
Thanks for the honest review. I own the first incanation of this vehicle and one needs a gentle touch when handling the vehicle. I appreciate your candour.
I really HATE the front windscreen section. The T2 is called the 'bay window' because it's big rounded window is so iconic. They got this way WAY wrong by building it so boxy.
I am a good builder with builds like the technic bugatti land rover defender (changed steering wheel side) osprey and there were 2 bit of this build that had a bit trouble the front glass with roof and the opening engine bay pieces kept falling off. The tent mechanism caused some slight issues only when I close it and open it so I will leave it open. The stickers still have different shades issues clear back might be better but are harder to get nice.
Love your videos so much jang!! Highest production quality and most knowledgeable and detailed reviewer out there. Thanks for all the time you put into these
Great review Jang! This set, and many others that you review are not for me but I enjoy and appreciate all the details, features, and faults that you cover in them. Keep up the awesome work!
This is one of the best reviews I have ever seen. Very honest. I was thinking about getting this because I have the T1. I am going to get it (but going to wait for a deal somewhere ;) ) At least I know now what to expect, Thanks for the effort man. Oh and btw, I subscribed, looking forward to more of your revies :)
My parents had one of those VW pop-up vans when I was a kid!!!! It was not uncommon for the pop top to pop open when the van was going down the road. Not a set I will likely get, but it is neat to see, and brings back some early memories. Thanks for sharing!!!
Just build this set a couple days ago, and im in love with it!! For me only the steering mechanism was a bit hard for me. Now its done I have one complaint and that is the cloth piece getting all crumpled up when the top part is down. Tip for people who are gona build this set: take your time I did it in 4 hours but I did got a bit frustrated at some points. But in the end its a wonderfull set!! 👌😊
We had a 1970 bus and loved it, this set is great and I’m hoping to get my hands on one. Also waiting for them to make a Lego version of my 90’ vanagon
And I built this set and feel the same way about it you do Jang. I didn't have any trouble with it but I'm in a Lego group on Facebook and I've seen probably 10 posts about people struggling with certain aspects of this build
Excellent review! I really like the look from the front wheels back. The front is somewhat spoiled for me due to the A-Pillars being vertical rather than slanted, making the door and windscreen look a bit odd. Maybe a triangular white print/sticker on the ends of the windscreen could have disguised this.
Great review Jang! Usually I wait until you review a set before I decide to buy it, but this time around I couldn't wait and had built it before you made this video. I agree with all the points you made, it is definitely more advanced, similarly to the Ecto-1 from last year. I also had issues with things wanting to fall apart as I would attach sub-assemblies, like the rear hatch. Took me maybe 20 minutes to ever so delicatley attach it, lol! And I had problems with the engine hatch as well, mainly that the top of it hits parts of the engine assembly and breaks off a few pieces when I open and close it, and I'd have to take the engine out (which I'm glad is easy to do) and reassemble it, even double checking to make sure I built it up correctly. And the pop up top was definitely over complicated and cumbersome, and I dreaded coming to that phase in the build. But I LOVE the end result as a whole!!
This is a really nice set. It’s got a few issues but it’s really impressive how many things it can do and the interior is top notch. My biggest con is I wish it was in scale with the previous vw so you could display them together properly.
Love this piece after not touching lego for 30+ years. The built is manageable, especially if you have some experience in building models.. definitely for adults. Granted me at least 8 joyful hours to assemble everything. The only odd is there are a few weak points, one being the rear door which is relatively easy to break. Better glue the Lego parts up once built.
Such a beautiful build, I’m actually trying to save for one but this one would be the only brand new one haha. So many great features build in great job to the LEGO builders.
Great review, and thank you. What puts me off the most is the front window being not rounded at all and I find the headlights looking outwards odd. The rest is not that much of a bother since it is a challenge and just a showpiece thereafter I'd say. It's just, the front looking too off.
Wow, this bumper and other integrity issues 🙄😜 But overall… this set has so much to offer, and you showed it beautifully! To be honest I didn’t plan on getting this set at all, but after your review… 😅 I think I have a new expense ahead!
I dont want this set but i do want to experience the build now that i have heard jang say how hard it is. As a starwars collector the weirdest piece of instructions i have found so far is attaching the wings on kylo's shuttle.
Great review as always. I'm on bag 9, and this has to be the worst Lego set I've experienced building so far. If anyone is on the fence about getting this set. Don't. Buy something else :)
Perfect review! I would want to love this set, there is so much that I actually do like, but as a whole there are just too many negatives that really, really annoy me. But my biggest problem might be that this tries to hard not to look like Lego. But the problem is, while this does look more accurate than the T1, it is still limited by what's possible with regular Lego pieces. It looks more like a poor scale model than a Lego set. The T1 on the other hand didn't try to hide that it's made from Lego, which makes it a lot easier to accept some of the shortcomings.
Thank you for your great review. I have this set but not built yet and am a little concerned. I have the earlier model and I can see that its side and top are much truer to the original.
@@JANGsLEGOreviews Absolute banger of a set, and after the benatar my most wanted set for this year. I had the original T1 but unfortunately took it apart and lost a bunch of pieces so it'll be a fine addition to my collection. Thanks for outlining some of the flaws, especially that bumper, I'll have to watch out for it
So in all, this Lego VW T2 Camper is not for everyone, surely for the true experts that will know what they are doing. It still looks pretty darn cool with all the features, VW vans are classic cars and when you see one, you think of yourself back in the 60's (or imagine it if you weren't there per say), I even saw a green one a few weeks ago on the road. So at least, if you want to attempt to build this VW van, you've been warned by Jang! LOL
Brilliant set apart from the windscreen and a pillars. Waaaay too square and unfortunately I just can't get over it. Would love to see a peterbilt or a Scania in this line though
Though I consider myself a pretty experienced builder, I think the quirkiest/frustrating build I've ever done is the Apollo V as I had it explode multiple times during building. Creator cars not so much, but to be absolutely fair they're more display models than anything and I find you can do significant damage to any of them if you pick them up wrong. Always around the middle seems like common sense to me. Not that this model doesn't have a fair number of technical issues as many have already pointed out. Definitely looking forward to building/displaying this one. Really good detailed review.
Prefer the red one (T2), but the point is it is very easy to create detail in such large scale. The real skill is to make a model minifig scale that is instantly recognisable as a VW camper. Personally, I used the 31079 'generic' yellow camper and modded the frontage to give it the iconic VW look. I also shrank it from 8 studs to 6 wide, which is the optimum vehicle size for minifigs (episode 1 on my channel).
Love vw but I don’t think I’d pick this one up, too finicky for me. (She said as a tiny model painter). All though you never know sometimes I cave when I’m in the Lego store.
M J It stands really well. Do you think it would it look to scale with the American Girl Mega Construx figures which are slightly over 6cm? I'm thinking a custom Joss Kendrick with her surf bus.
Great review. I have every other CE vehicle but I am so torn on this set for some reason. Really up for the challenge but not a fan of the huge scale most of all and that spare tire. Going to take the next 10 years to think about it before it retires.. Also I think this could have been a better set to have different colour options like the Fiat.
My main complaint is that you can't steer and pull the vehicle by the spare tire. The steering works fine, but the tire comes off too easy when you pull on it.
I didn’t like the driver’s cabin door not opening further forward and enabling access to the cab at the same level as the main space. It feels like a driver would need to stand on the wheel to access the cab, or risk ripping their trousers trying to reach the cab floor. Looking at actual van photos, this is definitely a weird compromise to convert the model into Lego form.
I've been on the fence with this set but after seeing all the issues and flaws, I'm going to pass on it. Plus there's something about the shape of it that's off. I think it's the front windshield.
Hey, you got that wrong. That blue tank isn’t water it’s obviously a nos tank. lol but for real this is a really awesome set, and I hope to see you stream soon. Keep at it 👍👍
I’m going to Legoland in August. Going to buy this set there. I am very worried about the front bumper. I won’t be putting in the curtains, because they look both weird and don’t fit my display. I’m mainly purchasing this to go with my Lego DeLorean Time machine because the campervan is The right color and almost the right model. If anybody has the set could you please tell me if the front bumper is really that big of an issue!
Hilariously, this set is indicative of the “quirkiness” of these vans IRL! “Be careful when you move it or something may fall off.” Great review as always, thanks Jang!
You really see how oversized lego objects are when a standard mug and banana peice can be used to scale in such a big model!
Minifig scale was always a bit screwy when Lego figures would be four feet wide if they were the same height as human scale.

This is a really nice set. It’s got a few issues but it’s really impressive how many things it can do and the interior is top notch. My biggest con is I wish it was in scale with the previous vw so you could display them together properly.
Great video 😊
Love this piece after not touching lego for 30+ years. The built is manageable, especially if you have some experience in building models.. definitely for adults. Granted me at least 8 joyful hours to assemble everything. The only odd is there are a few weak points, one being the rear door which is relatively easy to break. Better glue the Lego parts up once built.
I’ve never thought of VWs to have “chibi” faces… my life has changed forever!
The sliding door is cool
Such a beautiful build, I’m actually trying to save for one but this one would be the only brand new one haha. So many great features build in great job to the LEGO builders.
If you take off the rear bumper, the engine comes out easily to display.
Great review, and thank you. What puts me off the most is the front window being not rounded at all and I find the headlights looking outwards odd. The rest is not that much of a bother since it is a challenge and just a showpiece thereafter I'd say. It's just, the front looking too off.
Hi Jang I love your videos I have been watching since I was 7
I went to my nearest LEGO store today, and I almost bought this set. And I’m now wishing I had. At least I got the Ferris Wheel!
Great lego review!
I was looking forward to this one!
Great view. Love the details in this build.
BTW, the blue bottle is a gas tank
I need to buy this and the t1
Wow, this bumper and other integrity issues 🙄😜 But overall… this set has so much to offer, and you showed it beautifully! To be honest I didn’t plan on getting this set at all, but after your review… 😅 I think I have a new expense ahead!
I kinda want to one day if I get this to get all the colored bricks in a different color
I dont want this set but i do want to experience the build now that i have heard jang say how hard it is. As a starwars collector the weirdest piece of instructions i have found so far is attaching the wings on kylo's shuttle.
Just ordered it. It will go well with the DeLorean. I think both sets are from the same designer.
Great review as always. I'm on bag 9, and this has to be the worst Lego set I've experienced building so far. If anyone is on the fence about getting this set. Don't. Buy something else :)
Kinda reminds me of The Loud House. :)
Jang "a few qwerks!"
Doug demuro "qwerks and features!"
The blue thingy is a gas cylinder for the stove top
Cool do you have any thoughts about the rest of this 2,000+ piece set?
@@JANGsLEGOreviews Absolute banger of a set, and after the benatar my most wanted set for this year. I had the original T1 but unfortunately took it apart and lost a bunch of pieces so it'll be a fine addition to my collection.
Thanks for outlining some of the flaws, especially that bumper, I'll have to watch out for it
Nice video
Man, I bought this set when it came out then had to sell it to help with tuition :( I still haven't found one for a decent price now that it's retired
Love vw but I don’t think I’d pick this one up, too finicky for me. (She said as a tiny model painter). All though you never know sometimes I cave when I’m in the Lego store.
Idea: for heavier sets add the weight as a detail in the list.
MINIFIGS: “sry no.” 🤣🤣🤣
its AMAZING

It stands really well. Do you think it would it look to scale with the American Girl Mega Construx figures which are slightly over 6cm? I'm thinking a custom Joss Kendrick with her surf bus.
Are you now gonna display this next to the DeLorean? It’s the same Volkswagen that Doc Brown’s killers were driving haha
I see they have love and peace but where is plants?
Pawel from Sariel's Lego Workshop absolutely hated the front end... Are you certain the headlights can't look any better?
I didn’t like the driver’s cabin door not opening further forward and enabling access to the cab at the same level as the main space. It feels like a driver would need to stand on the wheel to access the cab, or risk ripping their trousers trying to reach the cab floor. Looking at actual van photos, this is definitely a weird compromise to convert the model into Lego form.
"This will not look good next to the T1"... ah so I can save my money
Keep at it 👍👍
Technic pin to anti-stud is a weird concept, given that Technic holes *_are_* anti-studs.
Since the cloth piece is cloth, could you wash and iron it to remove creases? Genuinely curious on this.
I’m having trouble with the whole front end falling off my red and white vw bus.
Oops should read in-depth reviews. Sorry about that.
Just like a real VW, always have to work on it.
I was wondering if it's possible to build it with the side door on the opposite side, does anyone know?
I love this man
I’m going to Legoland in August.
I built this mirrored so it is a right hand drive
