It's an Olympia Olivetti Smith-Corona Royal! Nah seriously, designer said it's not a replica of any single model and I'm inclined to accept that!
Company lawyers must have told them to make sure not to connect this model to any real-life one, including the one in the old pictures...
It could’ve been an absolute 10 if only more than one arm raised when typing. Even a rotating system of three would make all the difference.
Keys gets stuck? Then that’s very accurate.
I had a Writter when I was a kid. Did My homework on it.
@@legobrickabrac sick 👌
@@Snuifduif198 I commplty forgot until now.
🤣 So true! Good old times. I owned an Adler/Triumpf portable from 1966.
It’s Not A Bug It’s A Feature
I sometimes wish Technic would do a sideline like this. It would be great to have Technic sets based on mechanical objects other than vehicles.
I really like that idea
GBCs are great examples of what Technic _can_ do, essentially free advertising for Lego,..
and yet Lego doesn't even manufacture or sell the necessary GBC balls any more (!)
_"Here, have a shoe!"_
Yeah same. A killer robot would be good. Or a washing machine with a turning function lol
@@TheCollectorsOasis Can't believe John Master Chief hates Technic. Is this the plot to Halo Infinite?
Would be weird as it could get but keep respecting the cars they make them suckers take year's to make in production
So you're saying I cannot in fact type "jang's price per volume of stuff ratio" with this Lego typewriter? :(
Sadly no :(
I miss the 'bing' when done typing a line 😅
Same yo😅
Just make the sound yourself!
@@Mikeinator_ na
The typewriter is relatively affordable. But they gouge you with the price of replacement ribbons.;) This is a very impressive set.
Well... Purchasing real typewriter could be cheaper than the set
Those sounds remind me of my first book reports and such that I did back on school. (Many many years ago) just when everyone started doing it on computers. I remember the teacher getting angry and substract points and if next report wasn't made on pc I instant failed. ( I couldn't afford a pc back then which didn't matter to him). I think nowadays you might get bonuspoints if you do it on a typewriter. ;)
I can't like this comment -- that teacher was garbage!
that's sad and wrong!
Ah the whole "I am a teacher, and I make more money than a 12 year old kid, so I'll punish them for not affording things"
Teachers (at least a lot of them) are a silly bunch, so I wouldn't count on them being consistent. I went to school in the 2000s and we were forbidden to use computers at all. Unless some planets aligned and we were suddenly required to provide work in print... and of course there were deductions for not following academic formalities, even though we never learned those since we never used computers.
Reminds me of the James Bond DB5. Once it’s on a shelf all the features don’t mean much but they really mean everything to the builder. Great work from the designers.
Good choise of color for typewriter
It looks nice and all, but most oldies i've seen IRL are black. I think for this lego-set the choice is oke, for imitating a typewriter it's not so much.
I am going with it being cool like this :P
I was half expecting the piece of paper to be stickered.
Hahaha imagine its just one big sticker or you just gotta put all the words on as individual stickers😆
“I’m hecka retro, look at me!” - Jang, 2021
Love it.
If lego can make a life size Nintendo Entertainment System, a almost fully functional typewriter, than why not a Commodore 64?
Or the first VHS 📼 deck , I’ll buy for sure still got 1 anime movie on 📼 😆
www.perifractic.com/takeout-shop/the-brixty-four-lego-c64/ Think he also has instructions to just make the shell out of Lego and put a C64 inside
Better than a shoe
This is an amazing set. I looks real, it has great functions. From a distance it looks like the real thing and up close you can see it's Lego. And of course, because it's Lego you built it yourself, so you can point to it and say: *I* built that. (Of course, that last thing is true of every Lego set you might have but that doesn't take anything away of the satisfaction of saying it.)
@@tobyrix7082 me too😊
It's so cool seeing familiar lego peices like the black bucket incorporated into something that looks so realistic!
This set takes non-motorized Lego functions to a new level.
I just finished the build before I saw this. Amazing build. This set is perfect for a kinetic sculpture alternative build. For what it’s worth, there are two English versions of the paper. One is American and one is British.
One is American and one is correct ;)
One is American and the other has crooked teeth
one is english and one is english
All i know the standard is A4
This was an absolute pleasure to watch you build live!
This is one of those sets in the category of I'm excited it exists because it's really cool, but not something I'd want to have for myself, which makes it the perfect Ideas set.
Along with Lego's blatant disregard of canon, no minifigs is a real disappointment. I do however appreciate the dual play features of the little lettered, spring loaded launch pads as well as the sliding, twin rollers of torture. Once again however, there is very little space to pose and or fit minifigs, and the twin rollers cannot receive figures to facilitate their doom unless they are paper thin...A perforated sheet of already flattened figures would have been fine.
I'm too young to really have ever seen a typewriter in person so I don't have the same sense of nostalgia and respect for this, but just seeing how clean the mechanism is is stunning. Everything just seems to fall into place when typing and it's very satisfying to watch!
Jang, fyi you have the paper holder bar assembly attached backwards... just pull it off and rotate it around so the ends of bar holders are near the rear of the roller instead of the front -- then the bar lays flat on the paper.
p.s., I didn't have the problem you describe of the key striker not reaching the "paper" as the platen moves further along. The keys all work, even at the end. Perhaps an issue with the piston pieces you received?
Lego sets get more creative by the day great job on the review as always
I LOVE ❤️ THIS. Because you are building a functional machine that looks good. It's a unique build and not easy. I just finished the keyboard and it's caused my upmost attention to do it. Love it!
It’s a beautiful set, but I can’t justify myself spending 200 dollars for a Lego typewriter lol.
I wanted the Piano because of it's unique engineering inside but felt it was too expensive so I'm very happy they made this which has an even more complex mechanism and is on a topic that I find more interesting than a piano.
This truly looks stunning. Looks like it rates up with the Grand Piano as a piece of technical genius.
For a typewriter fan this is an unique fun piece, for a Lego fan you can appreciate the amazing build given Lego brick limitations~And that sand green is just divine😍
A set I already really want and now I think I'll like it even more! Top 5 best set is quite a boast when you have built sooo many sets 😁
I can't get over how cool and unusual it would be to build a set like this. Now that I know it actually functions (and sounds) like a real typewriter, I'm definitely picking this up!
I wish the space bar actually worked. It feels really weird when typing and the space bar feels very mushy. I also thought that the lego typewriter would support standard. 8.5 x 11 US Letter paper. Unfortunately I have to print something smaller and then cut the paper very carefully if I want to put something custom into the typewriter. Still, I think this typewriter is the perfect combination of system and technic pieces! I love the technic mechanisms!
I am that very specific crowd. I love Lego, I love retro tech, fashion, culture, et cetera. I own an Underwood typewriter, it’s beautiful. A friend of mine frequents pawn shops and thrift stores. She alerted me of that typewriter. I bought it for 60 USD. I’m very happy with it. I plan to restore it as well. Now I’m quite tempted to buy this Lego set. Cheers!
I got an amazing, perfectly working suitcase typewriter from the thrift store for $7.99, so unless you're a typewriter enthusiast, this doesn't make sense for you
This type writer is extremely similar to one my grandmother used to have, I’d always play with it whenever I was at her house, so this set gives me an odd sense of nostalgia
This is the most beautiful set I have ever seen. I love this set, and my grandmother (97) loves it too.
This video looks so clean and professional.
Thank you Jang for another awsome video and for all the great work that you do for the Lego comunity. Stay save out there. 👍
you got into my recommended, good job! hopefully this channel will repair your view deficit
Would have been nice to have the number keys ... could see those prints being really useful in MoCs
As a display piece, it's brilliant. Honestly, the most difficult part of the build was fitting the paper into feeder.
I love this typewriter it may buy it as a birthday present to myself
Awesome set! Better than the Lego Ideas Grand Piano in my opinion.
I think I like them equally. I love both writing and music, they both have great technical builds, and both look really accurate to the real thing
OK I DID NOT expect it to actually function! Colour me impressed!
i took typewriting as an elective in jr. high in 1977. still have found memories of the "aaa-sss-ddd-fff" exercises. i believe that unless you grew up using or are familiar with a manual typewriter, the passion for building this lego set may not be there for you. i saw this behind the counter at barnes/nobles last month and may cave in and purchase it. my only fear is that this set may be too much of a challenge to build.
It's a great set. My only real complaint is the Q key that seems to be especially hard to press and also seems to hit the large Shift Lock key beneath it.
I didnt even notice it was made of lego until i check it good
as a huge fan of Violet Evergarden, I need this in my collection
When he started typing on it i freaked out for a sec cuz it sounded like it came from the wall next to my head...
Truly jaw dropping. Couldn't explain how much i felt about this😲😲😲
I appreciate the extra effort to create the ribbon and the spools for it...i just find the placing on top of the housing very very odd looking.
Not even starting with the fact that you can get very very old, black and huge, REAL Typewriters in my Country for 20-40 Bucks lol.
Like how you get a letter from Lego from the future :)
Honestly incredible but I can’t say I wasn’t disappointed it didn’t ding when it got to the end lol
Great vid!
Glad they made it in this green and not black, that’s how I pictured it during rumors
Lifestyle Photoshoot lifestyle. My aspiration.
Lovely Review, I want to pass because I just don't have room, though I feel I may have to get this!
Recently I found a near mint 1960s smith-Corona electric type writer for free on the side of the road it’s awesome
I think this set is amazing. This is what Lego Ideas was set up to be -- models that would never be made by Lego, suggested by Lego builders. I love that fact that it is a generic "every-typewriter" that has all the common features showing. Of course at $270 CDN (Jang, please, show Canadian prices!) it's very expensive. But for those who want ti and remember using them, it would be worth it.
7:35 I wonder if there is ninjargan
Looks awesome! Can you please show all of the different letters included?
Saw this and got excited. Thought it actually types.
0:08 The silver pieces look like a beard with an upside down mouth, and the two black pieces on the paper look like eyes!
I've always had a fascination with typewriters, I was born in the 90's typewriters were out of style but I still think they're cool.
I just so happen to have two typewriters under my bed. One of them works, but needs a new ribbon. The other is rusted over due to water damage. Really ought to get them fixed.
The release of this was very near the premier of Loki which includes a lot of typewriters of a similar style. I can't tell if it's just a coincidence or if it was planned
I might get this just for those green parts for moc I'm building
I was expecting them to give a different language of the letter to each country, but I really like how they just give everyone all the languages so if you don't live where you were born you can still use the language of your birthplace.
I want full size, fully functional, real LEGO luggage.
The spiral fan piece is common in technic MOCs for ratchets
What a cool set !!!
Have it. Love it.
None of the letters could have been typed on this......as they all contain numbers. Where are those keys? :-)
Apart from that one funny flaw, I do absolutely love this set. This is exactly what the Ideas theme was meant for, and it is so well executed.
I thought all the lever bars will pop up for different keys but actually only the center one rise. But still a amazing set.
Does the arm hitting the tiles create the typing sound? That will wear the finish off the silver tiles pretty quickly. Just something to think about.
So good, I want one too but too expensive as I spent $$$ on other sets =(
It’s funny, this looks like a great set but you could get a genuinely nice real typewriter for the same price if not less.
Good video as well👍
having only one bar that comes up when type on it kills it for me....had each of those type arms moved i would have bought day 1
Are there alternative prints for the keys in different regions to represent their respective alphabets?
This is one of those sets - like the 3-in-1 Pirate Ship - that's going to sell out really fast and then end up on resale sites for 150% the original price, isn't it? Partly because I think some ppl will just see a resale value, but also I imagine quite a few will be left unwanted once they've been built once (seems like an ideal high value gift product to buy for an adult).
I finished mine last night. My typing function doesn't work as well as the one in the review. Maybe it was my fault as I assembled the typing mechanism TWICE. The first time it was slanted due to misalignments. The page moving side to side mechanism is just a pleasure to build and watch move.
Looks so good❤️❤️
All I'll say is first time next level stuff there's they experience with it more they'll get better and better
Now I really want this set, just to see the difference between the dutch and the flemish letters
you mentioned the letter was a copy. any idea where i can download a pdf of the letter to print? i searched but only found a ebay listing to buy the letter.
oh thank frick the keys are printed... I was genuinely worried from how they looked in pictures that they might all be stickers.
Awww now i want this
Great review and such and such 😅😅
If it were based on a real typewriter, I'd say it looks most like a Hermes 3000. Other than that, doesn't look like much else, but to be honest, I really kinda like that, as was intended by the designer. Very good on his part.
I love this, how do you get it?
Would have been over the moon if the typewriter actually wrote 🥺
I wonder is it robust enough to perform "The Typewriter" composition on?
It lacks the *DING*
@@massimookissed1023 Wikipedia says a standard desk bell is used.
I get the appeal, but I just can’t justify spending $200 on this set, idk maybe it’s just me
I don’t get the appeal personally
I think it looks wonderful, I love the idea and I get the appeal, I just know this is not a set for me.
Maybe it’s for fans of typewriters? But at that point, why not just get a real one at half the price?
Id rather spend the 200$ on the Pirates of Barracuda Bay but of course that's my opinion
Ideas sets usually lose their exclusivity after a while, which then results in rebates. If you like the set, keep the eyes open for a sale in 6-12 months time, that is what I am going to do.
I want a lifestyle photo shoot lifestyle! 📸
I want I will bye I always wanted a type writer but a nice cheap one is rear this will fill the hole
Wow just beautiful
Does it actually work? I mean, If you put a blank sheet, does it type the letters correctly?
I feel like Lego would do a 1to1 scale vinyl next
There's nothing more to say about this Lego typewriter, you've pretty much covered everthing about it, Jang, and it's pretty cool of course, but it's not for everyone.
Oh it’s already out? Dang, where have I been?
Typewriters don't really appeal to me in any way. I've never used one. But this set looks awesome. I would truly enjoy building it and appreciate the design and how it works. I might buy this set.
