The doors not staying up is not "realism." It's a flaw that would have been very easy to overcome with a fold-out or insertable static strut on each side to give buyers the option to put this expensive model into its coolest pose.

    • @Katsudon96
      @Katsudon96 2 года назад +19

i fixed my doors, well one of them, got that 4X1 plate (left over from the first movie build) and stuck it to the bottom of the 2 parts that stuck out that have the pins in them. it stops it from falling down, and isn't noticeable when added as it is black. obliviously this is a temp solution.

The model set we're talking about here is in itself a great design. But what's even better is the fact that Lego is actually listening to its customers about the treatment of large translucent pieces.

    • @stuchly1
      @stuchly1 2 года назад +17

I'd say a multi billion dollar company should have been doing that from the start and no listening to customers should have been necessary in this case.
That same multi billion dollar company is too cheap to give dual molded legs to an exclusive figure in a very expensive set that has a very unsightly and very obvious gap in the print for the boots.
      Not impressed.
Lego has issues with color matching between different pieces, print alignment, print clarity and print opacity as well.
Not a premium product for the asking price by a long shot.
      Lego needs to do better.

Price to piece, this is about as reasonably priced as this set can be. Star Wars sets are sold at premiums which are just egregious. while the volume might not be there, you do have a pretty stunning representation of the movie vehicle, almost as good as a UCS set

I want to start off my saying that you are by far my favorite channel when it comes to analyzing and exploring Lego sets. You approach every set and theme with such patience and thoughtfulness. Thanks for continuing to be a true fan of an amazing hobby. “That Being Said..” lol, when the topic of value came around, and you compared this set to “modular building money”, it got me thinking. Because many of the advanced creator expert vehicles (Ecto 1, VW Camper, etc) are not as impressive in comparison to a modular when it comes to sheer size. However, I think some of that extra cost has to go into the extra design process it takes to create those vehicles. The Modulars are, for the most part, working from the same template for each release. Yes the interior details can be creative, but they are built in pretty much the same form. For this set, the designers needed to start from scratch, and create an advanced model that is pretty spot on with some really cool features. I’m only speculating, but I would guess that that process takes a lot more time and resources to complete then a modular set. My thought is Lego includes that extra cost in the price. I do agree that they know collectors and fans will pay it, but it may be something to consider.

Despite some of the quirks/flaws I think it's a pretty good value for the price. Really like how effective the hover conversion is. Side note/still missing the iron wheels for the rail conversion at the end of the third film though I doubt that would've been anyone's favorite variation. Still would have been cool to see.

I would love to get it as well, it's not perfect, but so close to it, I guess the only thing missing would be the rail wheels we saw at the end of Back to the Future part 3 when the DeLorean was being pushed by the locomotive, but that's a small detail, thanks very much for the review, Jang!

I feel like the problem with the side windows isn't the shoulders as much as the 1x4 tile that makes up the roofline. The roof seems too thick because of it, though I don't know how you could get around that with the way the A-pillars attach.

This car is just absurdly good.

  • @stuchly1

I am staring at that minifig leg print dumbfounded.
For that price you better give it actual dual molded legs to hide that gap in the print. Then it would at least look ok.
I am happy about the new slope and the new windscreen, but it's still probably not worth the money for me.

Adding a pair of 1x2-2x2 Up Brackets will lock the doors open for display. Swapping the #2780 pins in the hinges for old-type #4459 pins will also provide enough friction to stop the doors from falling closed.

Even though I absolutely love this set I do have a couple complaints as a huge Back to the Future fan who's not really concerned about some random colors showing through. As a person who is more concerned about the service done to the source material, I think that covering all bases is what this set really neeeded. Adding some rail wheels and some extra memorabilia would have been amazing. Maybe this is a bit of a strech but having different outfits for the minifigs (to go with every movie) would have been the cherry on top.

Personally, I had no misgivings about the price; compared to what little amount of Star Wars or Marvel stuff you could get for the same cost, or compared to the much more expensive Lego Globe, I felt the price tag was just right.

It should have been something they would take into consideration when packaging without having to be told.
They have been in business for decades.
This should never have been an issue in the first place.
It should have been their responsibility from the very beginning to make sure and package their product in such a way that it has at least a reasonable chance to arrive to the end customer undamaged.

bag three with the wheel mechanism I found frustrating. You need to make sure the ‘folded’ wheels are evenly lined up but mine wasn’t initially and the instructions don’t make that clear. Needs something like a close up showing how the gears should mesh to make sure they’re aligned. And that bag had lots of insecure pieces not being secured for quite a few steps

I'm a huge BTTF fan, I remember building my own delorean time machine with legos when I was a kid. I missed the first one (but honestly, the hood was not good looking, and I had issues with the fact that there was no windscreen, so no biggie. I was still pissed), and I gladly payed a little bit extra compared to the Porsche and the Mustang for that set.
I guess, like the SW stuff back in the day, you have the "licensed movie stuff" tax to get this one

Alright, call me a crazy theorist if you want, but I don’t think this will be the last Back to the Future set we’ll get.
Think about it: in the original set from years ago, we got minifigs of the 1985 Doc and Marty that were from the first movie. Now with this set we’ve gotten the 2015 versions of them from the second movie. Do you see a pattern?
So, it stands to reason that, perhaps not now or any time soon, we’ll get a set that has the 1885 versions from the third movie. As to what this set might be, I have an idea for that as well. Naturally the cowboy versions would seem out of place with anything from the first or second films so it would have to be based on the third.
So answer me this: What would you say is the most notable/memorable part of the third film? The answer is obvious.
    The train.
If Lego does do this, I can see three possibilities.
    A. They make the time train from the end of the film.
    B. They make it a play set of the scene with the 131 locomotive pushing the delorean. Naturally they would have to add Clara if they did this version.
Or my personal favorite, C. Do both. Make it a set of the train but also include the parts to switch it between the 131 locomotive or the time train like how the last two sets with the delorean have been. But of course this version wouldn’t just have Doc and Marty, but also Clara, Jules, Vern, Einstein, and maybe Jennifer.
It would be perfect! The ultimate Back to the future set!

Great Scott! Set looks beautiful. Price imho is ok..ish. Yes comparing to the volume of stuff (love that phrase, it covers it all), it is a bit much, but not way to much. It is just what you said earlier in the video: too many new collector buildings, which makes it hard to keep up. I am less willing to pay a 170 now, because there are loads of other set with a simular price tag I also want. So I have to make choices. And luckily that is a luxury problem. For many people it simply is way to much.

You could try putting a 4 long bar piece through the center of the pins that act as the door hinge. It might ever so slightly increase the pin diameter and thus the friction.

I can’t say for sure without holding it, but the model looks very sturdy and filled in. I’d much rather have that then a larger set that is mostly hollow space. The light brick is a nice detail as well. This is one set I’d like to trick out with more LEDs on the dashboard.
Marty’s face is the only thing that bothers me. I think taking the face from the CMF Spider-Man and using a slightly darker hair piece would have made it better. I’m slightly disappointed that we didn’t get the rainbow hat though…

I feel like a lot of pieces were used to implement the hover conversion play feature, when this is a creator expert set meant for display. I would have preferred a simple manual flip-down feature for each individual wheel much like the Cuusoo/Ideas set. This would potentially allow steering to be implemented as well. Also, all the control panels, license plates, flux capacitor warning should be prints. I appreciate the minifigs and the protector for the windshield, but I also expect such things from a premium product.

I give the GB ECTO-1 a solid 9/10 for building experience, play features, and collectibility/detail. This new Time machine looks like it might get a 7/10 for overall design and construction given the issues we see and the fact that they rely on too many stickers. The Marty and doc mini figs as well as the three separate conversions do help sell it which can bump it to an 8/10 but if it was just the single variant without the mini figs that drops it.

I think it's a shame that TLG didn't put any detail on the underside of the DeLorean so that it looks better when hover-converted; Also I think TLG could have made a flame trail sub-build, but it's likely something that MOC Builders can easily do (along with blue light-piping). All-in-all I think the set is better than the Afterlife Ecto 1 set though, and I hope it inspires someone to create an ideas set of the BTTF3 Train.

I think the only thing that bothers me just a bit - and I haven't seen anyone else comment on - is that the back wheels should be larger than the front. Seems like it would have been very easy for them to add that...

I got lucky to use vip points to knock the price down to £135, I had £5 on card which they took off & this set brought it up to £10 again so they took that off as well

The model looks great, but too big and expensive for me. Now, a $40 one like the tumbler would be awesome.

It's been two months already and it's still out of stock over here haha, they even ran out of space for all the emails that people put in for be notified of it. Definitely a best seller, hope Lego makes more sets for back to the future!

I never look closely enough to notice scuffs on trans pieces but for those who do care, that's a good leap forward.

Pieces exclusive to a set are not a good excuse for a price increase. Sure, they cost more to design and produce for 'just this one set,' but the main reason they keep coming up with exclusive new pieces is so you can't just build the new stuff using your old bricks, and you (or someone willing to sell to you) have to buy the new sets. That, and you always have to create new stuff to stay relevant.

I feel like this trade off is fair. They made the ultimate Back to the Future set, included every single feature you’d want, two great figures, and it’s under $200, which is what I thought it would cost. To me, this seems like a good deal. I’m not even a fan and I kind of want it

I don't get the complaint about the price. There are drum lacquered pieces. There are licensing fees to pay. There are technic pieces. And you get three variations you can buy. These all add up.

Drum lacquered pieces are not new. LEGO spreads licensing fees across the entire product lineup as a CDB. The three variations involve a small handful of extra parts, which I accounted for (my review was for the product on the whole, inclusive). It's a lot of money for this amount of mass-produced toy plastic parts. At what point would it be okay in your view for me to criticize a high price? If it was $200? $250? $300?
