I own TWO 2009 FZ1's....one geared for highway (39 tooth rear sprocket, stock 17 tooth front) and the other geared for FUN (16 tooth front sprocket and stock 45 tooth rear)...these are FANTASTIC motorcycles....I had the ECU reflashed to uncork the limiters and smooth out power band and to adjust fueling for YOSHI slip on...I also "decatted" both bikes and did LARS' air box mod to open it up for more air, installed BMC racing air filter and removed AIS system to eliminate backfires....I installed GIVI 52 liter top box and ZERO GRAVITY touring screen....now, I even do my GROCERY shopping in both bikes....lol....BEST bike I've ever owned....a beast and anvil like reliability...

Friend of mine has the earlier model FZ1 with over 800,000 Klm's on the clock, the original engine lasted for over 650,000 klm's until it only had four gears left in the gearbox.
It has now become a grand fathers axe, I think the only original parts are the frame and body work like fuel tank and fairing, but it still keeps going.

Good review. The sissy bar on the back reminds me of the 70's. Not much to look at, but so very practical to lash kit to. Had one on my CB750 back then. Two pins and pull the tower off for daily riding. Put it on for touring and it would perfectly support any assortment of gear, bags, packs, tents etc. Just had to mention it. The rest of the bike is sweet. Nice review!

I own the 600 fazer fz6 S2 and with 100+ ps it is more than the ideal commutersbike. More than 40.000km last couple of years. Approaching the 100.000 in not too long I think. Next I could live with a young FZ1 I think. Nice review.

I had a 2007 and it was great, now I own a 2006 model with a 16T-45T sprocket combo and a rapid bike fuel module. I love this bike

Beautiful motorcycle, I would like to ask if it has enough space for two people, because the back seat looks a bit small.

There is also the FZ8 smack bang in between this FZ1 and the FZ6 - might be the perfect bike for this guy?

05 fz1 owner. No clutch wheelie in 1st or 2nd with top speed of 160 +. Not as flick able as some of the 600's I've owned but it's a solid, dependable, versatile bike.

I just love the FZ1, always have. I have a Honda Hornet 919 (great fun bike) at the moment that I also love and will always have a soft spot for but will be getting an Fz1 sooner or later. Was looking at Z1000 and Ninja 1000 but I don't know why but I feel 'acquainted' with the FZ1. I'd rather one with ABS but they are hard to find here in South Australia unless you go for a very late one which is too dear for me.

Its quite weird that in my location, the FZ6 is actually more expensive than the FZ1, even though the FZ1 should be the higher tier model and rarer as well. If you are saving money to go for the FZ1 I don't understand why not.
Any mechanical problems and failures long term? Expensive to maintain? Or has it been only regular maintenance like oil, filter, tires, brake pads, spark plugs, etc?

I've ridden two belt-drive bikes (Victory and Buell), but didn't like the power delivery. I prefer torque right off the bottom.

I have the naked version of this bike, just found out today models earlier than 2014 have a potential stator issue where the magnets fall off causing quite a bit of a mess. So not perfect, Yamaha updated the part to prevent this but you have to buy it for a high price.

Yamaha to me is like Toyota for cars they’re the most reliable bike I owned. I had a Yamaha banshee that was stolen from me beaten, not serviced correctly and had multiple accidents and still was running perfectly until the day they stolen it from me again and I never seen it again.

This man simply needs something with 2 or 3 cylinders. Yamaha got the engines for FZ1 and FZ6 from the R models and that makes them very temperamental. In 2. Gear your license is in danger even before you get to the real powerband

Hmm, thumbnail of 2004/5 model FZS1000 (gen 1) Fazer in Dark Blue Grey Metallic but video of 2007 FZ1 (gen 2) Fazer in Dark Blue 😕
Gen 1s are the best out of the whole range by the way, those gen 2s are crap, ABS, fuel injected, badly retuned, blah blah crap, sorry
