if they can make powerful hardware at a competitive price point it could become a titan in the console industry. People that have never gamed on a PC will be able to get all the advantages with basically none of the things they don't like about the platform. It could be very, very, VERY big. We'll have to wait and see but I think the jump from what they were trying to do with Steam Machines and what they actually did with the Deck is going to be very telling. I'd be excited to see a Steam set-top box under lock in a Walmart with a kid begging his parents for one.
I'd imagine they will be able to take a pretty significant loss on the hardware since it funnels everyone into the steam store. They could legitimately create an apple like ecosystem for gaming. All you steam devices communicate. You take your games and progress wherever you play. Your couch, your desktop and on the go.
I think the biggest issue people had with the current consoles on the market is that you couldn't carry over your previous library. Steam basically solves that. You're guaranteed to be able to run all your previous games on future consoles.
That was the deciding factor on why I switched to PC exclusively last gen when we transitioned from PS3 to PS4. I bought a ton of digital "PsOne classics" and none of them carried over to the PS4
00:05 Don't play with my emotions like that. I see the glasses, I get excited, and then you immediately take them off. Just tear my heart right out of my chest why don't ya!?
I mean... If you aren't planning to use the PC for anything else but gaming, then yeah, this isn't a bad deal. And if it has a desktop mode like the Steam Deck, you could probably still buy games from other publishers like GoG and mod it as well. The Steam Deck is a great emulation machine.
As long as its upgradeable. I mean I'd love to see a collaboration with Framework given that old motherboards can be repurposed. Ooooh! If old motherboards can just go into handhelds they would make great gifts to nephews, nieces, spouses, friends to bring them into the fold. One of us! One of us! Resistance is futile....of course.
Wouldn't that just be the mistake they made with SteamMachine? Not saying it's a completely bad idea .... It just kind of defeats the purpose of an all ready out of the box console. No offense, but what do you really even need to upgrade if perhaps Valve extends its service and OS to be more cloud based?
@@DaveGX The Steam Machines were just garbage as a whole, I don't think being upgradable was really the reason why that happened. The steam deck is upgradable, and it's absolutely fantastic.
When Steam came out with the Steam Machine in 2015-ish, I bought the Alienware Steam Machine from Dell. It was awesome. My wife still uses it to play Stardew Valley. Big success to me.

I still have my Zotac Steam Maschine. It's my most used computer. It was a game console for some weeks, my desktop PC for many years and is my living room entertainment PC since a view years, always with Linux and always with Steam installed. ;-)
Same here. Gave it to my wife, and she uses it now. But, mine was the Dell Alienware Steam machine. Loved it. I used Windows 10 on it, and it was wonderful. Great machine.
I started playing KCD this week as well. I laughed when you started talking about lock picking, because that is the exact same experience I had. Lock picking with the track pad is SO nice.
Considering the way the steam deck is i believe it would be a apu for cost reasons, what it needs is a good upscaler like the switch so it doesn't look weird on TV's like most PCs do
From what I understand, they're going to use custom silicone for both the CPU and APU, but Steam OS is getting support for many types of hardware, so you could install it on your own upgradable systems.
Calling it now. HL3 will be announced with SteamOS/controller launch. But only if Gabe thinks it has a serious chance of completely dethroneing Windows.
To be fair, you can install Linux on your laptop and use Steam, as well as litrus, heroic, etc. (Same as on Steam os). That's what I do with my little PC, because Windows is a pain even for work and not just gaming.
A steam console would be awesome. Gone are the days when I enjoyed faffing on a PC to max my frame rate. My desktop is for work (and you can’t beat a Mac mini for that), and my TV for entertainment.
I would love a steam machine that can connect and run VR games on my Quest. I’ve been holding off from getting a console because I really just want to play my PC games. It’s why I’ve mainly been playing on my Steam Deck.
Yeah I just hope Valve with steam console or steam box or what ever they call it. Has proper GDDR6 Vram with at least 256 bit bus. Steam Deck only supports UHS-1 SD cards, which means it is limited to 100MB/S read speed. Therefore, the SD card you select doesn't need to run faster than 100MB/S.
People act like SteamOS isn't Linux, and that Valve is here to save us from windows. It actually really annoys me. Game compatibility is really not much different on any other desktop distro, and neither is ease of use in desktop mode. The main difference is that people don't really use their steam decks for desktop usage (mostly), so they never really see all of the [Linux] behind it. Unless it's upgradable, I'm not interested in a Steam console, but I do want Steam OS on my PC, so long as I can dual boot windows. I'd buy a separate SSD just for Steam OS.
Please don't mark out for Valve. Sure I would also like more competition in the console space, but if you think Valve is your friend, then you are an idiot.
Plus there way more perks that outweigh the downsides. Steam sales, free online. Access to games from Xbox and PlayStation, emulation. You can just do more on it than you can with a standard console

I'm about to spend $4k just on a graphics card if msi doesnt RMA my 2 year old $1400 graphics card.. so i could still use my pc while i await the rma process i slapped in a cheap old $1200 2080ti...
the price of games is not whats gonna scare me from this hobby. idc if the cost of games quadrupled. id definitely complain about it and i definitely wouldnt buy as many games as i do now, but i wouldnt quit gaming because i have to pay 80$ for a game instead of 60$. this hobby is already expensive as fuck. the cost of the actual games is the LEAST expensive part you have to worry about.
Wait do we know this for real?

Hahah I forgot to bleep them oops
This will end Sony as big as Playstation is a Steam Console is massive at the very least Sony will turn pro gamer in a hurry
nintendo, sony and MS need to be dethroned
If valve releases a console it will not just be a great gaming device, but also a great and affordable all in one PC. You just have to install Windows on it or dual boot it.
So there building a pc😂
Unless it's upgradable, I'm not interested in a Steam console, but I do want Steam OS on my PC, so long as I can dual boot windows. I'd buy a separate SSD just for Steam OS.
ill get this and leave Xbox, where it feels like there is no reason to stay anymore
I wish the would stop updating steam deck !! Every time it mess something up !
Please don't mark out for Valve. Sure I would also like more competition in the console space, but if you think Valve is your friend, then you are an idiot.
just talk slower bro hard to keep up love the content tho 😊
TERRIFER GLASSES
get a mini pc and put bazzite or just dock ur steamdeck tf u want a steam console so badly for
Fiiiiirrrrrrst
A home console that cannot run the latest multiplayer games (with anti-cheat) will not succeed.
That’s why valve is making their own multiplayer games
Plus there way more perks that outweigh the downsides. Steam sales, free online. Access to games from Xbox and PlayStation, emulation. You can just do more on it than you can with a standard console
I hope they find a fix for this. But it's a pc so u can always run windows on it
@@christianr.5868 they're also developing a new Valve Anti-Cheat. I'm sort of optimistic that this might eventually be a step to allow it as a universal Anti-Cheat alternative for Linux. Might go a bit far-fetched with this... But one can hope.
And you won't be able to afford it
I was able to buy a OLED SD, & I will consider purchasing whatever new machine value releases.
Damn ok
