Really enjoy your channel. I'm 52 and started playing games in 1979 and none of my friends play games anymore, so it's pretty lonely when you can't share anything about your hobby. Visiting channels like yours, feels very good in that regard. Feels like coming home 😉
52 years old or not i WISH older ppl today played games like you instead of being judgmental lol. Even in my younger days my parents couldnt care less about gaming etc.. then again that was in rhe snes era etc. but just you wait ..give it another 10-20 years and a lot of gamers will be 50+ and still game. we live in a different time.
I'm 52 as well, been playing games from around the same time frame with my first Atari 2600, I still have all my games and over 50 consoles. With all these games, emuation is too easy, and seeing it on my Steam Deck is great.
When I was a kid growing up with my various game boys, my friends and I would talk about how awesome it would be if there was a console that played everything. Nintendo, Sega, arcade and even pc games on a handheld. It seemed like one of those pie in the sky thoughts we’d have, alongside interstellar travel a la Star Wars, things like that. The steam deck is exactly what we dreamed about. I cannot believe something like this actually exists. Especially in our walled garden, pay for each live service type of existence. It’s remarkable.
I used to dream of a handheld with a backlit screen and graphics like the PS1. By the end of the PS2 gen the PSP came along. The fact that it could emulate PS1 and had PS2 like graphics and play movies and music too was insane at the time.
More of these type of videos please! I think all of us are a little burnt out on "device mania" and that's one of the fundamental appeals of retro gaming - a break from the constant consumerist push to buy more and keep up with the latest thing all the time, and a chance to enjoy what you want at the pace you want. Believe it or not your intent and headspace comes through clearly in the things you create, like these videos, so if you are having fun and finding peace then we are as well. And if you find it mechanistic and boring we probably will too.
FFXIV is an incredible experience on the Deck provided you're playing a controller-friendly class like Dancer. Playing an MMO while laying down is an absolute revolution in the field of human sloth.
We are slothborne, born of sloth, live in sloth. Perhapz we will perish in sloth? I cannot say. As i write this, my mine addles into the realm of dreams.
I know I'm late to comment, but I played ffxiv on my vita. Got banned for playing on public wifi on a handheld after people in my fc found out and snitched
I gave up being a physical game collector decades ago, but seeing those NES cartridges in the background almost makes me rethink that decision. They look so cool stacked up, and bring back so many awesome memories. I tend to forget about all the time spent blowing in them though.
I really enjoyed getting the collection set up! My parents sent me my old NES collection last year and it was fun listing out the other games I wanted to add to the list, and then hunting them down :)
@@wesleyswafford2462 With digital games, you just make a copy, and then distribute said copy across multiple backup drives. HDDs will outlast those cartridges by a longshot
Dear Russ from Retro Game Corps, after resisting your Steam Deck videos for almost a year, and making excuses about why I wouldn’t buy one, opportunity finally struck and I had the chance to acquire one for Christmas. Now all I can do is thank you for all the Steam Deck content, because of course it is amazing both as a modern game device and a retro games device (I use it for both). I certainly wouldn’t have gotten it without your videos, and I use it exactly the same way you do, which is while watching TV with my wife after the kids are asleep. I don’t worry too much about battery life. If I want to play Sekiro, I just plug it in behind the couch, and if I want to play Link to the Past, no plug needed. I agree that it makes sense to pair certain kinds of games with certain TV shows. Sekiro is good during 90 Day Fiancé, but a slow-paced game is much better during Better Call Saul. Now I have two retro handhelds, the Anbernic RG280v that I use in bed and for travel, and the Steam deck that I play on the couch. They are perfect complements to each other. I have gotten a huge amount of enjoyment from theses two devices already, and I have you to thank for the recommendations, the setup guides, the accessory videos, etc. Keep it up man, Retro Game Corps for life!
We love content like this Russ! It shows the fun side of gaming. Reviews are appreciated, however getting to know you and your preferences is satisfying!
Ever since I was a kid I dreamed to play Paper Mario TTYD and Simpsons Hit and Run on the go portably. I shed a tear the first time I booted those 2 on the deck.
Haha cant agree more, i have every paper mario game installed on my deck currently, after finishing the first n64 game im currently half way through the thousand year door, i plan to finish all of them on the deck
I’ve been playing the burnout series on the deck and I’m so happy I get the full 6 hour battery life while playing it. The deck is awesome for retro games.
Just ordered a deck and I’m excited to get it. I’m hoping this gets me back into gaming since I prefer handheld on the go and this covers every system I want play. Thanks for all you do
@@rubylovesyousm yes and it is everything I wanted. The only thing I want more of is battery life but I knew what to expect and I’ve been playing the hell out of it
Hey Russ, I'm not gonna lie I'll watch any and every video you create in regards to the Steam Deck. Doing a brainless Top 5 games of the month, software update summaries, Decky plugins, IRL topics, etc. Your content is far and away my favorite on RUclips; even more so when it's about the beloved Steam Deck. I've been playing a lot of Wreckfest and Roguelikes/lites like Luck Be A Landlord, Peglin and Dicey Dungeons. Thanks, Nick
My biggest use of the device has been streaming my Ps5 to it so my wife can watch tv while I play, and I've found the battery life with that to be pretty nice.
Thank you so much. Ive been on the edge of buying a steam deck and have watched a ton of videos on it. With it being on sale right now, I've been trying to justify buying given I have a switch that i almost never touch. I like the idea of emulators and having the "better selection" of games to play on the go. Your everyday play conversation really helped me on taking the plung to buy one.
Aside from the fact that the Deck is indeed a brilliant device, there's only one word I can say about this one: AMAZING! The mix of talking face and top-down shots really drives it home! Can't wait for more! Digging both your content and perfect beard haha - stuff I can only dream of.
The emudeck tutorial was the first video I watched, since I got the steam deck I’ve been doing a lot of tweaks to it and had to have had it re-image and I keep going back to that video. Great content!
Nice breakdown :) Would be nice to have an updated guide on how to install non-Steam games in Desktop Mode, namely standalone GOG installers as Heroic and Lutris can be finicky
Heroic just got an update where you can now choose to add a game automatically to steam. I've only tried a few games (Blake stone, RoTT, and Blood), but they add artwork, and you're able to download controller profiles. Just as a general practice, I download, install, and first-boot any epic/gog game in desktop mode. Trying to use Heroic through SteamOS has never worked for me.
@@Giltygear The latest Heroic updates actually broke GOG standalone installer, I have to go through Lutris for the install instead now and then back to Heroic to add it to Steam properly. It's quite messy
So no one is commenting on how this fine gentleman is able to play video games WHILE watching tv shows with his wife? Those are some impressive multitasking skills. We salute you 🫡
I was scrolling down the comments thinking someone else must have thought about the whole multitasking angle. I confess I don’t get it. I mean, I get it, and each to their own, but for me the idea of watching something AND playing a game makes no sense and just ruins each activity from separating my focus. If a show/film is worth watching why/how can you engage with it and also engage with something else in a meaningful way? It ends up feeling like consumption overload, not just one audio-visual stimulus but two at the same time?! Crazy. But yeh each to their own 😂
I've just set up emulation on mine and I'm loving it. My son used to play Yokai Watch on his 3DS when he was younger so it awesome to finally see what he was into all these years later. Now 17, he's gone back to the 3DS so we play the game together. Awesome bonding experience!
Just want to thank you for your channel and all the work you put into your videos. I've gone from Miyoo Mini, to Anbernic RG353M, to the Steam Deck I just ordered. Every device, I use your videos to gain insight on them before purchasing. Please keep up the fantastic work!
The steam deck was everything I ever hoped for. It allowed me to pack away so much stuff and have it available instantly through steam deck. It allowed me to experience the path I didn’t take when buying systems. It totally got me back into playing games. I just wish I could sit down and bang out RPGs like in the old days. I’d definitely recommend it total game changer.
I was already starting the latest video by Digital Foundry (coincidentally) about the Steam Deck, but Russ... I tapped your thumbnail so fast. I love DF's pixel peeping skills, but I appreciate your perspective, because it's much more reliable as a user. Thanks for your awesome work!
I am really happy about the Steam Deck and what is has become. I was one of the people who got theirs very early and the experience was rough at start. But with constant updates and community care, the device is now my travel PC and favourite handheld of all time.
Great video Russ !!! I have had my steamdeck for almost a month now. I have a dual boot, windows 11 on a 2tb external SSD and love it. I have basically made a “Frankendeck” with a HUB, 2 external SSDs, and a micro sd card installed as well. Love the device even though I seem to be spending more time tinkering than playing. I would love to see more Steam deck videos on game configurations and performances
@@imstupidbut No, I have the 512gb one so didn’t think it was worth doing it. I use that storage, along with the 1TB micro sd card I bought for Linux and steam games. I have a 2Tb external ssd for windows.
Ive been looking for a handheld to give me the best experience playing windwaker! Glad you mentioned it. By far my fav zelda and something ive been craving to play for a while
Hey Russ, just thought id take a minute and share my experience. I grew up with CRT TVs , but as I got to about 13-14 and I was no longer spending as much time at home and I was able to go out and sleep over friend's houses, plasma tvs were in their infancy. I vividly remember for my 14th birthday, my mom got me a 12" flat screen tv that only had component and a brand new ps2(I owned multiple lol). But I would take that tv and ps2 everywhere with me including to school so that I could go right from school to a friends house and start playing my games at their house. In the 8th grade Final Fantasy XII came out and I remember me and one of my good friends would get together almost 7 days a week at his place to play through that game side by side, some of the best memories I have! I also grew up with gameboy, ds, psp ,etc. and I always wondered if we would ever get to a point where they would be able to fit a ps2 and a screen into a handheld device I pictured a large gba lol. welp, here we are in 2023, ill. be 30 in couple days and the steam deck exists and is honestly mind blowing to me. I love it to death, and it's probably my favorite console/pc ever made. Never mind the fact that I love what Valve is doing, or how the deck sheds light on Linux in an awesome way and could help loosen Microsofts' and Windows' grip on gaming in general, but it also brings to life that dream I had all those years ago, carrying my 12'' tv and my ps2 around and for that it holds a very special place in my heart!
For me the biggest thing that kind of caught me off guard was I figured I'd still be using my Vita and 3DS more because of both being smaller more pocket friendly devices and both just sit around collecting dust more than anything any more. The bulk of the Deck hasn't been as much of an issue as I thought it would be and I drag mine around with me basically every where. I think a big part of that is it's definitely a do everything I need handheld to the point where it even has picked up the slack for a few things I was previously considering a tablet for like reading comics on the go as well as even some music stuff. It's nice to be able to pick up my Deck and have so many bases covered with just a single device.
Can't wait for my Steam Deck to get here, as a fellow guy who loves to play mindless games while watching stuff. I find if I'm not doing something with my hands it's hard to watch stuff, so I'm really excited to set it up for emulating old faves
I've been using my Steam Deck as my main computer ever since I moved countries in September (because I wasn't able to bring my main machine, yet) and it is honestly absolutely amazing that it can fulfil the role of a PC, I can even work on my Unreal games on it to some extent!
I also use the steam deck as my evening unwind with my wife on the couch. It’s been nice to just pick up and play some old games I never gave a chance before. Have been playing Metroid prime 1 and 2 as well as mad max
Watching this video while waiting my Deck to arrive soon! I purchased this just only to be the ultimate emulation system, I hope I dont regret it. Legion 5i pro gen 7, Switch Oled and now Deck. My setup is now complete
This old Gamer (and yes I am old at 67 started gaming in 1972 the first time I saw Pong) thanks you for an excellent video. Trying to decide if the Deck is for me.
I play my steam deck when i want to play while lying on my bed, or sitting on the big sofa away from my PC, or when I want to grab every pillow and hole up in my closet with snacks, drinks, and games like I'm 5 again. I usually play turn-based JRPGs and indie games that are easily pausable, meaning that pausing actually stops gameplay and when I unpause I don't need to quickly react to anything. This is because I often play in very short bursts, like when I'm waiting for water to boil. I don't play emulated games much because JRPGs take forever to finish, but the one I do play is pokemon mystery dungeon because even if I stop and come back a week later, it's very quick for me to pick up right where I left off. I also bring my deck when I go on flights, or when I go visit my family (I don't bring a laptop or tablet). In these cases, I'll also play a little FFXIV because I'm away from my PC. As for what videos I'd like to see, I'm interested in all steam deck videos, but I'd just prefer a few quality videos as opposed to, say, a lot of videos that have mostly filler content. I can wait for quality videos, I have a steam deck ;)
I really appreciate this type of video. It is cool to see how others use their devices, and which ones get the most use. I don't have a Steam Deck, but I do have a Win600 with SteamOS, as well as a Onexplayer (5700U version) that I use regularly. The Win600 has been my go to device for playing Horizon Chase and a few other lightweight games. I use my Onexplayer as a side computer at work, but I also really like playing Fallout 76 and all the Forza games on it. I am typing this message on it as well!
The number one thing that’s going to drive people crazy is definitely trying to figure out how to split the window when you open dolphin and I’m here to help. There are two ways you can either hold control and hit N or you can click on the three lines box in the top right corner and click on new window. 💫✊🏆
I think the Steam Deck is nearly perfect for me…but I’m gonna wait for the next version. If they can improve the battery, screen, internals, and make it thinner/lighter, then it’s near perfect, especially if the price stays the same. There’s been so many other companies that have jumped into the handheld gaming PC market recently that I hope Steam can take some of those improved features from competitors and make the deck even better.
Things I Do With My Deck In order of likelihood: 1. *Play RPGs* PSP/Vita/3DS/Switch era. Shin Megami Tensei, Jeanne D'Arc, Persona, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy, Bravely Default, Danganronpa 2. *Play 360/Wii U/PS3-era games* . Graphics pair well with Deck, good battery usually. Think Bayonetta, Dead Rising, Elder Scrolls Oblivion, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Mario Kart 8 3. *Nostalgia-Trip* , play classics like Pokemon Stadium, Goldeneye, Cruis'n World 4. *Indie games* . Like Blasphemous, Loop Hero, A Hat In Time, Katana Zero, Rimworld 5. *Play modern titles or recent* : Breath of the Wild, Horizon Zero Dawn, Dirt 5, Mortal Kombat 11 Conclusion: I've already beaten several games in my backlog, even older games like Banjo Kazooie. Really digging the deck! I lean towards games with good battery life. Some games are surprisingly playable like the mouse-only Elder Scrolls Oblivion. Good community controls let you use gyro, joystick, and trackpad, feels great! Lastly, some action games like Bayonetta just feel better docked, using a gamepad. Iwas playing very poorly with the Steam Deck buttons, kept dying and missing dodges
I never had a chance to play the Sega Saturn back in the 90s. I recently discovered the insane amount of excellent 2D arcade games specifically "shoot em up/bullet hell" and "beat em up". Most of the great ones are Japan exclusive. Playing them on the Steam Deck is extremely enjoyable and the battery last 7 hours too!
I finally have great access to PS2 games. I'm barely an adult now so the Deck released at a perfect time when I started making my own money, and I've been able to play games like Persona 3 FES (after years of Portable on my phone). I'm currently playing Silent Hill 3.
Just got the Steam Deck 3 days ago, and it's my first desktop PC gaming experience in a very long time. (The last time I played games on a computer instead of a portable device probably was on a PowerMac 9500 back in the 90s. Man, I miss those LAN parties with Marathon and Marathon 2.) Usually, I just use a portable device like the Miyoo mini Plus or the Switch, but the Steam Deck, which I still consider more of a desktop PC because of its heft, is quite nice. I've been playing Burnout 2 (GC) and XGIII: Extreme G Racing (GC) as well as some PC games on it. I think I'm getting further in XGIII now than when I actually had my original GameCube back in the day. On the go, it's still mainly the Miyoo mini or Miyoo mini Plus for me.
I got that dbrand leather skin too, just the darker one. I love it. Been holding up for 4 months now with no issues, even with a baby chewing on it sometimes
Had my 512gb steam deck for months and have done zero upgrades. All I did was buy a dock to that I could plug it into my monitor with a keyboard and mouse from time to time. I haven't used my PC for gaming in months, and probably won't for a long time, I love this thing. I've had so many hearts games sitting in my backlog for far too long.
Great perspective, always appreciate your thoughts and reflections. My Steam Deck has been a perfect foil for the beefier rig I assembled after GPU prices fell last year. When I first built the rig, I found that I wasn’t quite as excited to sit down and play as I thought. After receiving the Steam Deck, however, I’ve found the portable experience with games to be a gateway drug back into the desktop. I got my Deck this past fall, and so it has become a symbiotic relationship-sometimes the Deck leads me to the TV (where I have the rig connected), sometimes the rig leads me back to the Deck. Right now, I’m playing Witcher 3 (complete edition) on the rig while concurrently playing the non-updated iteration on the Deck. Sort of playing one against the other not only to compare version differences, but also to play off different choices. For other titles, retro games in particular, I’m thinking about diving into something like Syncthing to keep all my retro saves synced. I wonder if content around managing multiple machines (not as many as you might have on hand, but perhaps a main rig and Steam Deck setup) might be an avenue to explore? It’s always interesting to see how folks manage things, never fails to introduce new perspective and new ways to make my own process better.
I want to buy a steam deck mainly to play through emulation, but i was wondering how goes the battery ? Like the wii u emulators and switch emulators might drain battery very hard, would you say it can last around 30/40 minutes or more ?
@@hg8860 Wind waker HD gets about 3 to 4 hours in my experience. Yuzu often gets 3 to 5 hours, MK8 and smash bros for example. I have a few games like Luigi's Mansion 3 which does take it down to 2, but that is a worst case and is a fairly intensive game. As for someone that owns a v1 switch, it is somewhat similar in battery life, sometimes better. Also gamecube emulation is up to 5 to 6 hours. Intensive Wii games can sometimes take it down to 4, like I have been playing with metroid prime 3 with primehack.
@@KillzXGaming01 Oh that's very interesting thank you for your response ! I initially tought that they would need lots of energy because of how demanding these emulators are, but 3 hours is more than acceptable if you compare with a real switch.
@@hg8860 It is worth noting Switch models 2018 and newer do have improved battery life, usually doubling the v1 Switch but still for the steam deck I find the current amount perfectly fine. There is also the option of having a battery bank if you want another full charge and double the current amount.
One game that stands out to me on Steam Deck is Warframe, it manages to feel great without m+kb cause of the config freedom and back buttons. I still do prefer the breakneck speeds I can't quite get to on any controller, but I can totally play this game very well on my balcony now. Warframe is all about the movement, so playing it like this makes it surprisingly novel.
I'm absolutely in love with the 8bitdo Ultimate controller. It's the most comfortable controller I've ever held. It's the perfect mix of an Xbox, Playstation, and Nintendo controller. It a dream to use
Gotta love Wind Waker HD… I just beat it (for the thousandth time) yesterday actually, now playing BotW again before ToK comes out in May (not on steam deck but I am heavily considering a steam deck purchase in the foreseeable future)
The game i find myself playing the most right now on any platform is Vampire Survivors on my Deck. I play it on the couch next to my kid or my wife while they watch TV. I play it on the road, I play it in bed, and I play it on the toilet. I just want my life back!
4 mins into your vid, I totally understand what you mean by wanting to have a handheld or a console that is not the same color every time. I have a Steam Deck, a Miyoo Mini V2, and an RGB 10 Max 2 that are the same color, black (although my Steam Deck has the dbrand Robot Camo skin that came with the dbrand KillSwitch case which is cool) . Black is cool and awesome but I've been having the same thought as you Russ, it is nice to have some variety once in a while. Just recently got a Metallic Red Vita Slim & a Metallic Blue *new* 3DS XL & they look great
Love my steam deck, needs some work still like the pre-shaders updating when your not connected to the power outlet and your battery keeps thinking its at 0% and you want play it portable. But love that they are updating it all the time so more games getting added from my library.
I'm watching this video and commenting from my Steam Deck while sitting at my gaming PC desk with a game up on the other monitors and the Deck on the 3rd monitor with a dock. Just funny I think. Anyway, I have been chipping away at RDR2 and Skyrim, yet again. Usually while watching TV with my wife. Skyrim is less intense than RDR2 so if we're engaged in a show, it's a good option. I need to finish it again lol. The Deck is otherwise my constant companion, going with me when I travel for work. Battery has not been a huge concern as I often have power near me. I used your EmuDeck tutorial and have been enjoying the older games all over again. The Deck has become my primary gaming device and I thoroughly love it. It replaced my laptop in that I can use word on the go and it's smaller and easier to fit on my motorcycle. I have a upgraded case that houses the BT keyboard I use on the go. Otherwise, the stock case is fantastic. But I wasn't dying over $20 to house the keyboard too.
I've only had my steam deck for a month but I've mainly been using it to play older PC titles/games I wanna replay but can't bring myself to on account of hating being tethered to my desk. Stuff like GTA IV, Persona 4 (which was actually one of the deciding factors in getting a Steam Deck since I can't bring myself to rebuy/restart it on my Switch), etc. I don't use it for emulation anywhere near as much as I thought I would (I originally wanted to buy it to record retro games on the go like I do with my Odin since it's much more convenient than sitting at a desk to do it, but was dismayed by the lack of easy screen recording on it/the fact that OBS can only really record at 720p on it without it chugging), but I've had a blast playing Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Timesplitters, and a few other games that don't run as well on my Odin. One of these days, I may get a PS3 emulator running on it and finally get around to playing a bunch of games I missed out on as an Xbox owner (stuff like Little Big Planet, the Rachet and Clank games on the console, etc). Between that and being able to whittle away at all the indies I wanna play for cheaper than it would be if I just played them on my Switch, I'm really pleased with my purchase.
best steam deck video ever mate, after watching your videos I'm going to buy a Steam deck, as a PC and a Psvita owner this would be a great addition to my gaming catelog, again keep doing the amazing work on videos cheers,
I recall it from a dream. I've just bought my Steam Deck Pro's. And my first downloads are, the original: GOW: Chains of Olympus, GOW: Ghost of Sparta, GOW I, GOW II, GOW: Ascension & GOW III. Then New GOW & New GOW Ragnarök. Then, Gears of War 1, GOW 2, GOW 3, GOW: Judgement, GOW 4, GOW 5, GOW Tactics & GOW Pop. Then, Heavenly Sword, HellBlade: Senua's Sacrifice, HellBlade: Senua's Saga, New Tomb Raider, New Rise of The Tomb Raider 20 Year Celebration, New Shadow of The Tomb Raider, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Horizon: Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Heavy Rain, L.A. Noire. Then Infamous, Infamous 2 + Festival of Blood, Infamous 3: Second Son & Infamous 4: Last Light Spider-Man & Spider-Man Miles Morales. Then, Small Arms, Boogie Bunnies, Hungry Helga, Smack That GUGL, Croc 1 & 2, Fat Princess, Bomberman Live & Metal Slug Anthology.
I've been through many handhelds in recent memory (including but not limited to the Switch and Ayn Odin Pro), but I always found the ergonomics being just bad, uncomfortable, these handhelds are usually made small and too damn thin for some reason, and my hands always get cramped in minutes, let alone hours. therefore they all have been sold. That it until I got my Steam Deck, it is simply the ONE, the handheld I always wanted. Yes yes it is HUGE, however that is a plus in my book, it just fills up my palms nicely, so damn comfortable. And the support behind the platform is second to none! Well Done Valve, Well Done.
Love the channel, but I had a chuckle at a contradiction during the leather skin talk... Case comment: "not worth the extra cost. Money could be put to better use for something else like an SD card." Leather skin comment: "At $50, It's pricey, but may be worth it to you." 😂 I have gotten an aftermarket case thst is the same. dimensions as the original, but it has moved the back scoop to the inside. If was $10. I store a usb-c cable and a 65w battery power supply in it. I couldn't effectively carry a charging device with me the original case. The original could only really hold the included Deck power plug. I also use a silicone sleeve/case on my Deck. A little thicker than I'd prefer, but pretty protective. It came with a screen protector and stick toppers/protectors. That was $13. I've spent less than half the cost of the leather skin alone on this whole set of protective items, so I thought it was funny enough to mention. 😋
Got mine Saturday. Docks coming this Saturday. If I can only figure out why none of my Dreamcast , vita , psp roms won’t work even though they seem to be. Then I’ll be a happy boy.
Having a Steam Deck, I don't feel much reason to go and get MORE devices to do what this one does. (I still watch those videos to support the channel, though.) That said, there's a few topics that might be more relevant to interests. First, one of the big "issues" I have with the Steam Deck is the... "analysis paralysis" of configuring performance for each title. That level of granularity is certainly better to have than not, but at the end of the day, my job is very mentally taxing. When I'm off work, the last thing I want to do is spend a bunch of time fiddling with settings to get things performant, but not taxing to drain the battery and keep kicking the fan on. I just want to have some fun and rest. There's some community profile databases out there, but not everything is detailed there. Perhaps a video on making it easier and faster for those who aren't knee deep in the configuration side of things to help get up to speed? The next big 🤔is: Cloud + Save Files. I realize this is may be out of your wheelhouse, but is there a way to configure Emulation Station to, rather than pathing to the default location on local storage, path to somewhere else... like, say, a folder in Dropbox? That way I could potentially play on any device, but my progress gets saved to the cloud so I can pick right back up on a different device? Given the power/fan noise of the Steam Deck, I tend to play it on the couch with a controller. But if I could play some older emulation on a smaller, more lightweight device while laying down in bed... that would be GLORIOUS. And while typing that, here's an open question to anyone: Is there an elegant way on Emulation Station to handle Randomizers? I'd rather not have to keep loading on/off ROM files and bloating up my SNES library. Is there any way to "create a new console" that I could toss in randomizer files for those times when maybe I do feel like going to play some randomized files? I'm probably going to feel pretty sheepish when, it turns out, none of this was particularly difficult to solve. 😅 Just... work has been killing me these past few weeks, and I've got a new baby, so sitting down and looking into this has just been too daunting to really commit to.
My initial selling point of Steam Deck, was Steam Workshop & Pixel Art stuff, for Rivals of Aether - which I've put countless hours into Then the Deck ended up being a mix of ROMs, Rivals, Workshop Content, & a good sized chunk of Steam Library Games - mostly bought on Sales Currently, Mega Man X Dive Offline has been my go 2 fix I make good use of the Collections Feature, To sort & organize everything, as well as the Desktop Side, to organize everything like a PC Having Google Chrome & Note Pads is a boon; looking up crucial information; then Pasting the Text to a Notepad, or JPEGs to A Folder; is as helpful as it was on PC I love the convenience of Steam Deck, over PC - no having to hunch over a desk in a hard chair, no having a big, bulky Laptop, that gets Hot & uncomfortable in the lap However, I still prefer the Switch & smaller Handhelds, for being lighter & less bulky - but You'll learn to get used to the Deck's size & mass As for Deck vs Console - having a Handheld Is more convenient, especially not having to wear glasses to see it clearly
I've been playing Elder Scrolls Online on the steam deck lately. I played at back at launch on PS4, but then the grind became too much. I don't think I could ever play this game again not on a handheld. The grind doesn't even bother me when I can watch a movie or TV while playing on the couch.
Nice to hear you get to actually enjoy these things rather than just review them for us. I was curious about your thoughts on the ODIN PRO's utility for your situation instead of the SteamDeck. The ODIN PRO would give you better battery life compared to the Deck along with a better screen and easier "sleep" function with Android. Vampire Survivors is free on Android too and can run GamePass. It would also be lighter to hold. Would the ODIN PRO not be a better all-around option for your use case? I do own a SteamDeck and it is an awesome device for sure so I am not hating on it. If forced to pick one device for everything then it is the best bet but I try to limit it to PC/Steam games mainly.
Very nice! Paper Mario TTYD and Wind Waker are both classics! They have aged quite nicely! I have my Steam Deck, but just waiting to get a wireless keyboard, USB Hub and USB external thumb drive to be delivered so I can finally set up EmuDeck. I forget if you've already done a video on setting up non-Steam games and emulators? For example, I plan on adding the PC fangame Metroid AM2R on my Deck, but not sure the correct way to set it up to get it running properly as it is neither a console game nor a Steam game. I also wasn't sure if you already did a video on Deck customizations like setting up themes, background menu music or other random Deck customizations.
Awesome video man. I think I am going to replicate your setup. Really enjoying your content. Jealous your wife let's you play Steam Deck, whilst watching TV. :)
I’m finally staring the steam deck journey, bought a second hand 512gb model with an sad & dock lat night for £450…. It’s the third handheld currently in the house (GPD Win max 2 & retroid pocket 2s being the others) The GPD is just amazing but It’s far from grab & go, more laptop than handheld and the retroid is ace but I’ve got a real itch for ps2 at the moment so it lacks power. Planning on following your emu guide and also playing a bit of fallout / oblivion games through again on steam.
Yeah I'm looking forward to purchasing one later this next week hopefully i will receive it before re 4 remake comes out I'm super hyped for both the game and a steam deck
Really enjoy your channel. I'm 52 and started playing games in 1979 and none of my friends play games anymore, so it's pretty lonely when you can't share anything about your hobby. Visiting channels like yours, feels very good in that regard. Feels like coming home 😉
Thanks for watching and happy to share this video with you!
@@RetroGameCorps ITS BETTER THAN CRACK AT LEAST LOL
52 years old or not i WISH older ppl today played games like you instead of being judgmental lol.
Even in my younger days my parents couldnt care less about gaming etc.. then again that was in rhe snes era etc.
but just you wait ..give it another 10-20 years and a lot of gamers will be 50+ and still game. we live in a different time.
I’m 61 and still an avid gamer. Started on a C64 and now on an XBox, SteamDeck, or gaming laptop. All the good new stuff and all my old favourites.
Same thought here when I was a kid.
I own series x ps5 high end gaming pc and my steam deck is my favourite because of emulators sat in bed playing snes era rpgs is awesome
This guy has his own distinctive way of making me understand things clearly. I really like to listen to him.
Thanks for watching, happy to be of help!
Thanks for sharing, Paul! Happy to hear that you are enjoying these two devices.
We love content like this Russ! It shows the fun side of gaming. Reviews are appreciated, however getting to know you and your preferences is satisfying!
I appreciate that, Jordan!
@@RetroGameCorps Please provide a MAME on Steam Deck tutorial 😁
About a week ago, I spontaneously decided to emulate the entire Zelda series in my Deck.
Never looking back.
Ever since I was a kid I dreamed to play Paper Mario TTYD and Simpsons Hit and Run on the go portably. I shed a tear the first time I booted those 2 on the deck.
yes man loved hit & run so much as a kid, had ALOT of fun playing that through on the deck!
I've been running both on my Odin. You're right, it's been glorious playing those again.
I was so excited to play my Atari games
Just ordered a deck and I’m excited to get it. I’m hoping this gets me back into gaming since I prefer handheld on the go and this covers every system I want play. Thanks for all you do
You get it yet?
@@rubylovesyousm yes and it is everything I wanted. The only thing I want more of is battery life but I knew what to expect and I’ve been playing the hell out of it
@@saltydad2987 Thanks for the response! I ordered mine last night and I'm so excited. May I ask which games have you been playing on it recently?
@@rubylovesyousm katana zero, South Park and the stick of truth, Dead Cells, Songs of a Hero and I have a number of games ready to play.
Your guide videos are what helped me get into emulation on my SD. Love it so far and it has become my nostalgia station!
Hey Russ,
I'm not gonna lie I'll watch any and every video you create in regards to the Steam Deck.
Thanks,
Nick
I like the premise of Luck Be A Landlord, I'm going to add it to my wishlist :)
"no man - i dont wanna chew it" - russ bot 3000
I've got my Deck on the way and I'm absolutely looking forward to it. Seeing videos like this come out are making me even more excited-
Thank you for continuing to make steam deck content. I love watching it.
The emudeck tutorial was the first video I watched, since I got the steam deck I’ve been doing a lot of tweaks to it and had to have had it re-image and I keep going back to that video. Great content!
Nice breakdown :)
Would be nice to have an updated guide on how to install non-Steam games in Desktop Mode, namely standalone GOG installers as Heroic and Lutris can be finicky
Crazy. But yeh each to their own 😂
Totally want that old TV in the bg.
Bro, I love your channel! Your instructions for setting up RetroArch was so good
12:09 As someone who recently played through all of the mainline Metroid (including other m) what an awesome ride and I highly recommend it Russ.
I would love to see more Steam deck videos on game configurations and performances
have you upgraded your ssd? im thinking of upgrading my 64gb internal storage (i also have 256gb micro sd) to a 1tb ssd for $150
@@imstupidbut No, I have the 512gb one so didn’t think it was worth doing it.
Love how you upgraded your machine ! 👌
He uses his hands.
There. Saved you a watch.
In all honesty, this was really well put together. Thanks for this, Taki
Sooo I’m kind of obsessed with the intro music 😂 great content!
Yes! It's a mini laptop as if I needed any other reason to drag my deck with me everywhere lol
My 512gb will be here on Wednesday. I finally took the plunge. Too much good stuff in this little thing
Totally agree with the use cases and types of games played - I think a lot of us use the device in a similar way.
Great video, awesome insight! Helping me make my decision to purchase a Steam Deck.
I set up eldest a few weeks ago and since then I’ve logged liek 20 hours on SSX 3 it’s amazing on deck and a perfect bus/train ride game
I've been playing Ape Escape 2 (PS2 emulation), Borderlands 3, and Psychonauts 2.
This baby is still so huge for me,
Cant wait the V2
Thanks for the video 👍🏼
Love this channel I'm 41 and you're advice helps keep it up
This old Gamer (and yes I am old at 67 started gaming in 1972 the first time I saw Pong) thanks you for an excellent video.
Considering you get/have ayaneo OXP and GDP devices, would love to see a video talking about why you lean on the steam deck rather than those devices
There’s been so many other companies that have jumped into the handheld gaming PC market recently that I hope Steam can take some of those improved features from competitors and make the deck even better.
how long you thinking its gonna be? I'd guess at minimum 2025
Why wait? Just get it and enjoy it for what it is! Buy the new one in a few years if it comes out.
Looks like you got your wish. You put your order in for the OLED?
I'm sure your misses is really enjoying the sound of that fan during TV time 😄
mine comes tommorow, im so excited been dreaming of consoles like this since 2nd grade 😃
Exactly the video I needed this morning.
steam deck is amazing for xbox cloud gaming and PS Now. I three in one bundle, not counting the console emulators you can play on this
Things I Do With My Deck
In order of likelihood:
1. *Play RPGs* PSP/Vita/3DS/Switch era. Shin Megami Tensei, Jeanne D'Arc, Persona, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy, Bravely Default, Danganronpa
2. *Play 360/Wii U/PS3-era games* . Graphics pair well with Deck, good battery usually. Think Bayonetta, Dead Rising, Elder Scrolls Oblivion, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Mario Kart 8
3. *Nostalgia-Trip* , play classics like Pokemon Stadium, Goldeneye, Cruis'n World
4. *Indie games* . Like Blasphemous, Loop Hero, A Hat In Time, Katana Zero, Rimworld
5. *Play modern titles or recent* : Breath of the Wild, Horizon Zero Dawn, Dirt 5, Mortal Kombat 11
Conclusion: I've already beaten several games in my backlog, even older games like Banjo Kazooie.
This video gave me more sway to buy the steam deck then the 20 plus other videos I've watched did because you were honest and frank thanks ❤
Since getting my steam deck I've finished like 3 indie games! It's so nice to just pluck away at while listening to other stuff
My Steam Deck wow moment was playing Wind Waker HD nearly perfect on it. Couldn't believe how well it runs. I also play a lot of PSP on my Deck.
I can’t wait. It’s what I’m most excited for!
You make epic videos!! This is a great channel!
The game i find myself playing the most right now on any platform is Vampire Survivors on my Deck. I play it on the couch next to my kid or my wife while they watch TV. I play it on the road, I play it in bed, and I play it on the toilet. I just want my life back!
Loved seeing Thousand Year Door on the little TV
I spend a lot of time trying to create the perfect setup for a device but don't spend time with it. Watching this video motivated me to do just that.
I’m about to get one in great condition off Facebook market place for only 650 CAD, it’s max spec with it’s case and the dock, super excited
Appreciate these videos man.
And my first downloads are, the original: GOW: Chains of Olympus, GOW: Ghost of Sparta, GOW I, GOW II, GOW: Ascension
& GOW III. Then New GOW & New GOW Ragnarök.
Then, Gears of War 1, GOW 2, GOW 3, GOW: Judgement, GOW 4, GOW 5, GOW Tactics & GOW Pop.
Then, Heavenly Sword, HellBlade: Senua's Sacrifice, HellBlade: Senua's Saga, New Tomb Raider, New Rise of The Tomb Raider 20 Year Celebration, New Shadow of
The Tomb Raider, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Horizon: Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Heavy Rain, L.A. Noire.
Then Infamous, Infamous 2 + Festival of
Blood, Infamous 3: Second Son & Infamous 4: Last Light Spider-Man & Spider-Man Miles Morales.
I love Zelda Wind Waker. I grew up playing that game, Metroid, Res4 and Eternal Darkness too. 🥰
It took me six months to play through RE4 on the GameCube, I could only play it in 10-minute chunks because it scared the crap out of me :)
I really like the way that leather skin looks it really stands out.😉👍
I think so too!
Having a Steam Deck, I don't feel much reason to go and get MORE devices to do what this one does. (I still watch those videos to support the channel, though.)
That said, there's a few topics that might be more relevant to interests.
My initial selling point of Steam Deck, was Steam Workshop & Pixel Art stuff, for Rivals of Aether - which I've put countless hours into
Then the Deck ended up being a mix of ROMs, Rivals, Workshop Content, & a good sized chunk of Steam Library Games - mostly bought on Sales Currently, Mega Man X Dive Offline has been my go 2 fix
I make good use of the Collections Feature,
To sort & organize everything, as well as the Desktop Side, to organize everything like a PC
Having Google Chrome & Note Pads is a
boon; looking up crucial information; then
Pasting the Text to a Notepad, or JPEGs to
A Folder; is as helpful as it was on PC
I love the convenience of Steam Deck, over
PC - no having to hunch over a desk in a hard chair, no having a big, bulky Laptop, that gets
Hot & uncomfortable in the lap
However, I still prefer the Switch & smaller
Handhelds, for being lighter & less bulky - but
You'll learn to get used to the Deck's size & mass
As for Deck vs Console - having a Handheld
Is more convenient, especially not having to wear glasses to see it clearly
I've been playing Elder Scrolls Online on the steam deck lately. I played at back at launch on PS4, but then the grind became too much. I don't think I could ever play this game again not on a handheld. The grind doesn't even bother me when I can watch a movie or TV while playing on the couch.
Would highly recommend checking out the Decky plug in, really adds a lot if only for the vibrancy mod
At this point I'm in no rush and will wait for a Steam Deck 2 or 'Pro' model. Biggest worry for me is honestly the battery life.
I instantly looked up that Windwaker wave art 😂
Great Job Russ
