Hey! Thanks for the video :) I’m a console gamer but looking for something on the fly for on transport etc, out of interest have you tried paying and fps multiplayers on it like cod or rainbow? I’m curious to hear if it’s usable for that or if latency is too big?

49 here, been working from home for 16 years, got a killer gaming PC in my office and... don't use it half as much as I should. Some of my days end up being 12 to 16 hours, so the last thing I want to do is sit in here gaming. However, my OLED Steam Deck is a different matter altogether. Living room whilst having something on TV I don't need to concentrate on that much, the garden when it's not pissing down (UK here lol), even a pub / bar at times if I've gone to one on my own just to get out of the house. And of course travelling. the deck has been an absolute game changer for sitting in airports, on 8 hour flights, on 2 hour train journeys... I almost look forward to that down time now!

You opened my mind right now. I also work from home, and my work usually takes longer. After a long day, I don't feel like playing games at the desk I'm working at. Lately, I've started playing games mostly by lying/napping in the living room with my Nintendo Switch. I never thought that the reason for this was that the place where you work and where you play are the same, thank you. Now the only thing left is to find a Steamdeck :) Thank you very much for the video.

I'm in exactly the same boat. I bought my Deck only a couple of months ago and love it so far.
I've always been a console gamer so it's nice having the perks and benefits of PC games delivered in a form factor, with a UI that clicks with me.
It's like a portable PS4 but with all the back-end tinkering of a PC.
I've got a few emulators, and fan developed mod games games up and running on there and it feels great having a "console" with so much freedom.

Have the same issue with working at my PC all day and not wanting to play games on it in my free time, but once I got the deck my weekly hours spent actually playing stuff went from like 1 or 2 hours to at least 10. I never thought I needed something like the Steam Deck but it's my best purchase in years ! It's literally THE backlogkiller too, I'm finally getting all the value for money back from all the games I bought in sales or bundles that never saw any play.

As someone who also works from home this really resonated with me. I grew up on consoles and have been thinking of getting my own pc but I already use my Mac for other things and I’ve teetered for months on if I should do a PC or a steam deck but when I think about the pc I wonder where else can I put it other than my office because for the same reason it’s work associated and needing that mental separation feels valuable. There’s nothing like ending the day and playing games somewhere else.

With family and life commitments it's great to read about people in similar scenarios. I'm no longer a console owner (apart from old consoles in the attic) but this seems like an incredible bit of kit. I have a switch but despise paying the switch tax for half the titles. 1000% with everything you said here. I also work from home in the room where my gaming PC is and it’s absolutely become a “work room” vs where I hang out, make videos and play pc games. For me the Steam Deck has been that pick up and play thing for sure replaying some old stuff, but also it’s very much a metroidvania device right now. I’ve never really ventured into that genre but I’m playing Hollow Knight right now and loving it.

The Steam Deck is perfect for some downtime gaming. I got my OLED model last month and I keep it right by my bed and chip away at some pokemon games. It's perfect for a nice evening in to play some games on the couch. I also recently got a dock and a bluetooth controller so I can plug it into my TV and my girlfriend and I play games from the couch. It's really a console that does it all, you can even plug in a Mouse and Keyboard to turn it into a portable gaming PC. If you're willing to tinker with it a bit (or enjoy that kind of thing like I do) you can really get just about anything working on this system and it's WELL worth it.

I love this video. I own a steam deck OLED and its my fav gaming device since i grew up on gba, ds and psp, i can play all the old classics on this as well as modern titles. I mostly play rogue lites such as binding of isaac, vampire survivors, enter the gungeon since i dont want to commit a lot of time which is bringing me to the next point.
Unfortunately I have been gaming less since discovering e-readers. I have downloaded over 1000 books on mine of all my fav genres and its much more portable, lighter, battery lasts for weeks, more beneficial than gaming. Its way better for your eyes since it has an e-ink screen that resembles paper, and you can read in bed for an hour before bed and sleep much better compared to playing on steam deck or on your phone.
First world problems where theres so much entertainment available now that i sometimes dont know what to do. Movies, books, tv shows, gaming, books, youtube. Really feel bad for kids growing up with so much choice as im certain it has a negative impact on your developing brain,

Steam Deck OLED has been the best purchase I have made in the past few years. Having the Steam library at your fingertips as well as how good it is at emulation is INSANE for a handheld that has the ability to play Elden Ring and even more technological games like Cyberpunk and Horizon Forbidden West. And you can dock it to a TV. There seriously is so many good things about it and really no negatives outside it wont PERFECTLY run ALL games, and potentially the price to some. But its worth it.

i'm kind of in the same boat. I'm tired of my desk and after a long stressful day at work, I want to play stuff laying down in a different room.
I wanted to get a fancy GPU at first, but then realized that I won't be playing more, since it would imply sitting at my desk. So I just got an oled deck, which is a whole computer that was cheaper than the GPU and I've been playing a little bit every day and loving it!
I'd say it's perfect for busy adults. We have fond memories of older games anyway so those will run flawlessly and the battery will last a lot.
I've been having a blast playing through fallout new vegas, it's running at 90fps on full details. But even better, by restricting it to 60hz and 8W tdp, you can play it for 7 or even 8 hours if you're indoors reading terminal logs!
I know my way around computers, but I'm not messing with the desktop mode yet. Just cause I could use it doesn't mean I don't want a quick and painless experience, and the deck is just that. I cannot believe I can hold my childhood games in my hand, the little kid inside me is in pure awe

Perfect for busy gamers, who like playing 10 year old games or indie titles. It's a cleverly engineered peace of tech, i'm just not sure I see a use case for it personally. I picked up a switch for similar reasons and have so far only used it about 5 times, once on a flight, and once messing around playing mariokart on a projector.

This is such an underrated review. Like many others, I have 2 young kids and I need to be where they are if I want to steal 15min away to play a game. I work from home too and while I can just un-hook my laptop and take it to the sofa, I'd rather not risk my paycheck when my 4to inevitably climbs all over me😅
Plus, by the time I get it set up and the kids settled doing something, the game has been paused for 30 min and has drained my battery!

With my career I work 30 to 60 days straight at a time then I’m off the same amount of days. And I’m a huge gamer while I’m home this steam deck was made for me! While I’m gone I don’t have internet 90% of the time and I don’t want to pay hundreds of dollars a month for portable Wi-Fi or a hot spot so the steam deck is a miracle for me as a huge gamer traveling all the time and away from home for a month straight or more. I am so appreciative of the steam deck.

While I love the steam deck and the rog ally, what kinda makes it a deal breaker for me(less on the ally) is the sheer size of it. If it was maybe 30% smaller and more compact, I would've definitely kept mine. I traveled for 2 months around asia with the ally and while it was much more compact than the deck I previously had, It was still somewhat a hassle to lug around as it takes a lot of space for backpack traveling, my whole day sling was taken by the ally, and the deck would easily take 50% of my backpack space due to the gigantic case it comes with and, on that department, the switch is still unbeatable.

    • @TheRealAlpha2
      @TheRealAlpha2 9 месяцев назад

The size almost ruined it for me. My brother has one and when I was considering it I took a look as his and kept walking. But the more I thought about it the more I realized there really wasn't a better option. I had a couple of small Retro handhelds under a hundred bucks, but they were just "okay" and whatever was on the horizon wasn't coming for a long while and would like be just as big or more expensive. I'm used to the size now. I make allowances for when and where it's appropriate, where it isn't I have the smaller pocketable devices.

I‘m very close to pull the trigger on the Deck myself and your video might just push me over the line. Working from home as well so I‘m definitely not spending my free time on that same desk. I also don‘t think I want too much tinkering with my PC gaming experience, so the Deck seems to be the perfect choice between flexibility and consistent peformance. I was looking at some mini PCs but Windows just isn’t made for the TV experience IMO. The one thing that stopped me so far was no native Game Pass support, but you made me learn of XBPlay now and this might be the one missing piece of information I had. I wanted to ask if your buying habits have changed since your purchase? I tend to be getting more frustrated that my gaming libraries and progress is scattered among so many consoles these days. I wish it was all in one place and easily transferable. But then if everything is so easily accessible on one device like you showed, it‘s maybe not really a problem after all?

I own a steam deck, switch, 3ds xl, pc, ps, psvr, quest and vita. I haven’t turned any single one them on except my pc for over 2 years now, not once.
This is an insight I’d like to share for a small portion of people out there. If you are like me this might not be a good option for you.
I like to read paper back or on kindle in bed to make going to sleep easier (insomnia) so no gaming or phone or any screen time in bed 1-1.5 hours before sleep each night.
No gaming at work for me in a suit as a project manager at a multi decade billion dollar revenue per anum international corporation. Not the best look or use of time.
Commute work, again, no gaming. While having a meal (4 meals a day) I enjoy watching a movie/tv show or talking to my partner so no gaming.
In the toilet I enjoy watching YT similar at the gym on a treadmill or in between sets resting while lifting.
When on vacation usually with my partner no gaming except the airplane but never again during travels.
So although I got on the hype train and purchased a few handhelds I never use them. After playing on a large screen tv or my desk setup with a monitor on 4k 120fps or 1440p higher fps the 7-8 inch screen feels incredibly small to enjoy the game.
You might feel quite excited and use it often on your initial purchase and then leave it collecting dust like I have after the honeymoon period.
The screen is just too small, I am ok with resolution, while frame rate is quite bad I can stomach that too but I really have no reason to need of use. If you have a console and even better a pc or laptop it is not a need to have but interesting to have kinda deal especially if you have one or two more hobbies on top of gaming.

My gaming started in late 80's. Steam Deck is such cool device as I don't play never titles virtually at all, maybe the most modern stuff is around gta4 era. To me it shines on ie, Dos games. It's fairly easy to buy stuff on GOG. Use Heroic launcher to import game into Steam and then I can easily map all dos keys, joystick and mouse stuff to controllers and especially touchpads with overlays. Like just completed Wing Commander 2 with Steam Deck having about plus 20 keyboard controls mapped to device. That's stuff that you can't do with any other device than Steam Deck. Actually I also played through JA3 and I absolutely hated its controller setup, so I just did my own mouse/keyboard shortcut controls for it. Sure mapping takes easily around hour for many titles to do, but man when you do it well, the experience is insanely good. Like that WC2 I've always played with keyboard, but now for first time I had joystick emulated on left stumbstick and rest of the keyboard mapped, game experience was BETTER than with playing on desktop. I just wish Steam would re-iterate Steam Controller 2 and just simply make it Steam Deck without display part and I'd buy that for my HTPC in a heartbeat.

I'd have to look into that and do more research. I bet 007 Goldeneye would be awesome on the Deck! I wonder if you can get old NES and SNES games too. Also, what FPS is that at @1:33 ?
