Russ's story about cautiously buying the White OLED is the same exact story I had for the smoke black OLED. My 512GB LCD was fine, but I was curious about the small revisions. "Oh noooo. I accidentally bought another Steam Deck. Whatever shall I do?"
I don't play games a lot these days. Usage of my LCD steam deck is even less frequent. yet I still have the urge to purchase a new gaming handheld🥲 How's your experience with it? I'm actually thinking about getting ally x and dual boot windows with bazzite OS or cachyos.
@@Char1es4k It's my preferred method of browsing the internet. Yeah, the off-white kind of surprised me because the form factor is reminiscent of Aperture but the color is just different enough to feel off due to that somewhat inevitable mental comparison.
I used to have an off-white Aperture Science iPhone case I got from valve and it was just me if my favorite things ever. I’d be all over an AS steam deck.
5:09 I'm not sure how wet or saturated those wipes are, but I can tell you from experience that alcohol can take the color (or at least print) off things so tread carefully. I use a paper towel with a light spritz of Windex myself. 🕹
also depending on the Display used in the Device, it might be a bad Idea to use Isopropyl (ipa) on the screen. if not shure use it only on the Plastic-Parts. Cleaning a Nintendo DS second Screen might end in Tears ^^
I use AudioWipes. They're meant for hearing aids and headphones, but can clean general electronics. They don't damage rubber, plastic, silicone, or acrylic. They're made by Oaktree Products.
The etched glass does look better if you actually want to use your device anywhere but your living room. I think that is why it’s considered the more premium option. The glossy screen makes it difficult to use on the go.
Even in the car it makes a massive difference lol. I can’t use any other handheld during the day in my car, besides the steam deck oled. Don’t worry, I’m not driving at this time lol.
@@astrovewlix It's amazing that someone can just say confidently my opinion is THE true opinion. It's ok to disagree but to say it's only true for one person. That's a lack of self-awareness I'll never understand.
Yes, but if you get the etched glass and apply a glossy screen protector, you'll get distortion. Whereas if you get a glossy screen, you can easily apply an "etched" or matte glass screen protector and get its benefits _without_ distortion.
Great review. I would say when comparing the Etched Glass vs. Glossy, the glossy may have a bit better "pop" to it but if you plan on taking your deck anywhere or playing in well lit rooms you are always going to be trying to reposition yourself so that the light isn't ruining the picture. The etched has been so nice for taking on road trips, planes, etc. just pick up, play and never had to worry about the light sources around you.
I have the transparent black OLED LE and I have come to appreciate the etched glass. The screen looks great compared to non-oled screens and works great for reducing glare if you are out and about. A lot of users have stated using steam decks indoors, but i do like that the etched glass provides that versatility.
That part about the garage sale was really eye opening because indeed, to the online world into these kinds of devices, it would seem as if every neighbor knows what the Steam Deck is when in fact.... Thanks Russ, that was really cool to hear about!
I love the look of the white. That said, I don’t want my handheld to be white. I don’t want it glowing or be distracting while I play games at night. Also black contrasts better with the screen.
Man, the white model looks so sleek..if Valve had released this color way along with the other OLED models, I definitely would've gotten the white one. Nice video, Russ. Keep up the good work
9:05 - Each person will define what is important to them with a handheld. For me, the screen and ergonomics are extremely important so I like listening to this level of detail and I tend to agree with the sentiments. Though just like those who can't seem to understand why someone would want a 120hz AMOLED display in an Android device, I don't fully understand those who say the LCD Steam Deck is good enough. Nothing wrong with the LCD Steam Deck for cost savings or if someone bought an early version before the update. But if someone is either ignorant or doesn't care about the quality of screen in a handheld device, they're welcome to their opinion but not the greatest judge of quality. AMOLED, especially with higher refresh, offers a significant difference over LCD.
Some people just have different filters for things like this. I can see how is much better than a LCD but then I ask myself "will I think a LCD is bad after playing 100 hours with the thing?". And in my experiements I've found that...not really? Like as long as the pixel density is good enough I don't really care that much. Maybe being very fucking blind plays a part in this, or growing up poor and unable to have most devices that I wanted. I settle with being able to have fun, even if the experience is not the best that it could be. More if it can safe me money to buy complements, invite my gf to some cool activity, and overall make me feel less guilty with my expenses >
You make good point. For someone like me who got a Deck purely for retro emulation (mostly N64 and down), and also has it hooked up to a TV 99% of the time, the screen matters almost none to me.
I'm assuming they were limited by what screens were available at the time, but man, that LCD screen really is rough. I wish they'd at least put a passable LCD screen in their current LCD models. I haven't seen an LCD with worse colour reproduction since my 2012 TN panel budget laptop (and most TN panels these days are far more colourful than the LCD Deck's IPS panel).
I bought mine last night. When steamdecks came out I was fine waiting several years before buying to see how they did, and then recently I've seen them featured in gaming channels I really like more often for a while and I decided to go on the steam website to see what games I had in my wishlist and the ones I had bought, and low and behold was the Steamdeck in all it's white glory. I have a huge love for white consoles in general but have never owned one and seeing how it was limited and I don't have one yet I decided, like you did, after much debating, to put it on my card. I'm excited and terrified for it. I don't own a console with an OLED screen, I only have the original Switch and an original 3DS, so this is going to be quite exciting to see it for the first time in person.
Still rocking the LCD, no complaints my only gripe is the size. If they can just somehow shrink the steam deck to Rog ally size with all the same ergonomic niceness and inputs that would be chef's kiss for me. That white is definitely 🔥🔥🔥. Maybe someone will be brave enough to do the cheetohs test on it to see how dirt resistant it is
Man. If I didn’t get that Limited Edition Smoke Transparent one, I definitely would’ve hopped on this white one. Definitely for anyone to who missed out on the transparent OLED, now’s your chance to get a clean white.
I used the exact same logic to get mine! I adore it so much. Also, you get a keyboard that’s unique and a heck of a lot of steam points. I enjoy it so much with the grey and the white. I use a grey tomtoc when I’m out and about but the white case when I am staying home.
I've got the clear grey one, the anti glare doesn't really bother me anymore... Once you use it, you forget it. They released an update that would let us turn down the charge LED, but I don't remember where it is anymore. 🤔 I turned mine down ofc.
As an Australian who hasnt had the chance to get the deck and has been a bit frustrated by that, having the limited white model available from launch was a great consolation prize
Watching any video of a steam deck immediately makes me reach for my own. Had the LCD, when the OLED released. I caved so fast and got it. If black wasnt my favourite colour for electronics. I’d have this white on day 1.
Mine gets delivered on Tuesday. :) edit: also I went back and forth on whether I should buy one, just like you. I put it in my cart 3-4 times before pulling the trigger. hahah
Yea I love my LCD original steam deck. Steam deck 2 is not going to be around the corner.. imo, more like the next handful of corners. All I can say it the white appealed to me as soon as I saw it.
Very sleek color. I personally like the etched glass better. The glossy screen on my OLED switch is like a mirror, it reflects everything including your face.
I do love RGC reviews, although this one kinda has feels of "now that you've made a video about it you can business expense it", but i still watched it so can't complain.
Good video! The white does look slick! I installed a custom shell onto my Steam Deck, but it was way more of a hassle than it really needed to be. It would be nice to just have Valve offer custom colors for the Deck right out of the box (even if just a few color options).
As a change of pace I think it would be interesting to see a more "normal" game review session from you, for example reviewing those recent Steam games just showing on this video including Art of Rally, A Short Hike, Guacamelee, etc. It's not only the retro devices you review that I love but also the WAY you do reviews and your presentation. Since you're a big gamer (obviously lol), I just think it would be neat to hear like, what your favorite modern games area (even though for example Art of Rally has kind of a retro vibe even though it's a modern game, maybe that would let this kind of video still make sense given your channel name!)
I added a glossy screen protector to my etched OLED model and I personally think the colors look amazing. Also, compared it to my friend’s 512 glossy screen model and neither of us can tell a difference.
Maaaaaan, the white on that is absolutely gorgeous! I don’t have a Steam Deck m’self, but I feel like I’m gonna end up adding one to my roster of handhelds sooner or later 😅😂
I actually like the light bleed, especially on the translucent shell. You can see it's fully charged while it's off from both the top and the front. I'm constantly changing between chargers in my work vehicle and being able to see what's fully charged at a glance without having to move the device is convenient.
irrc, Valve recommends not using screen protectors on the etched displays as it can interfere with tactility. While I prefer glossy displays (including on my gaming monitors), I wasn't too bothered by the etched variant.
The tomtoc hard shell case is sooo underrated. I just want to throw my steamdeck in my backpack and not worry about it. Every other case adds so much bulk but the tomtoc case is excellent to protect it while it's in a bag. I also have the hardshell case for my switch pro controller and the moment they announced it i had to buy it for my steamdeck.
I still have the 64GB OG Steamdeck and love it for indie games and emu. What am I missing out on with these revisions? Oled & screen stuff and a bit better performance?
The etched glass model is amazing. The colours definitely pop, and most reviewers doing side by sides weren't picking up any difference in colours or contrast. It might look different when you're recording video of it at an angle with ultra bright studio lights, but most people are playing these things pointed towards their faces. Glad folks generally have the choice when it comes to the black Decks, but I honestly wish my Switch OLED had etched glass as well, as the reflections also kill details and contrast on top of being distracting.
I already have the translucent limited edition and love it but the white looks great too. Glad they didn't come out at the same time or it would be a difficult choice!
The chapter is LED light bleed, it's labeled LCD light bleed. And that's actually nothing compared to the first LE Steam Deck...of course, that's actually semi-transparent plastic. Does seem like their Limited Edition ones are going to have the etched screens. So if people want the colorway they have to be prepared to deal with the screen.
I was just thinking about a SteamDeck OLED yesterday 😂 because I been waiting for mine to be sent over to the new place and it’s been a year and I’m like 🫠 maybe I should get a new Steam Deck 😂 perfect timing. This looks great!
I almost picked it up. This would be my first steam deck. My biggest concern was with when my kids play with it the dirt will show a lot more on the white. I was also worried about finding the different colors on the controls since they are not black.
Russ is such a workaholic making these videos for us, he doesn't even realize equate is a Walmart brand. Stay hydrated and eat well Russ, it's okay to take a break!
I felt really temptes too, but will continue rocking the 512 LCD. This thing looks beautiful though. Handelds beeing your job I think this is a must have! Absolutely understandable!
I think I want to get a steam deck someday, but I'm still not sure. I've found my tastes in gaming have changed dramatically since I've been busier with a professional job. I would often rather play on my phone or a handheld now instead of a console, even when I'm sitting directly in front of my 65 in oled tv. I'm so tired that I often just want to laze around on my side and don't feel like keeping my neck up looking at a tv. At the same time, the switch feels like such a compromise with its low graphical power and frustrating design (my switch lite feels like a solid one piece console but the screen and battery life suck while my switch oled has the ability to play on tv if need be and has a bigger and better screen but has garbage buttons, no dpad, and wobbly joycon). The switch has the perk of getting physical games, which i can resell if I don't like them or play them anymore, but it gets harder and harder to ignore the perks of having an entire digital library at one's fingertips. I really don't like pc gaming because of how much I hate using windows, but steam has pretty much every game i could ever want without worries of exclusivity. I'll have to wait and see what nintendos next console looks like as well as the next steam deck. My taste has shifted almost exclusively to turn based rpgs recently, since having a low energy grind heavy game is relaxing after a long day at an intellectually demanding job.
Yes, W turn-based RPG enjoyer! DQIII HD2D Remake is a perfect relaxing, low-energy turn-based RPG if you haven't looked into it yet. The entire series is great, as well. I feel a lot of the same ways you do when it comes to work and gaming, except I do really enjoy my Switch despite having the exact same criticisms.
I think the OLED white edition looks great, but I'm hoping SD 2 has a lot more color variety besides Black/White. I still have an LCD SD with extremerate transparent red shell I installed, however I needed some extra power/battery life so bought an Ally X when it came out.
5:09 the alcohol might degrade plastics. I suggest Huggies natural care baby wipes. Not the aloe version. The regular ones. They are extremely effective at removing smoke from electronics and screens. I 🚬 and have used them for years to clean my stuff. It cuts through grim like a hot knife through warm butter.
certainly not ideal to have to do it, but if the light bleed is annoying anyone else who has one, then it is totally possible to lower the led brightness in system settings till its only visible where it should be
DBrand ! If you're reading this. Make the new (ik you're gonna make one for the white one) grip case be the gray that is on the sticks and buttons and add some of that same as the steamdeck white flair in your own way ! I would go with tribal style stripes (but that's too much for the average consumer, put white where the hands and table won't touch it). Coming from an ex-artist, I think it would contrast v well.
Russ it would be cool if you could make a "Steam Deck OLED One Year Later" video. I miss your coverage of the Steam Deck and it would be nice to hear your updated thoughts on the system and if you still use it as your primary Portable PC for most games.

Nah I don't want it. I can spend that 700$ on so many other things. And the black version looks better.

Retro Game Corps, thank you for great review!
Maaaaaan, the white on that is absolutely gorgeous! I don’t have a Steam Deck m’self, but I feel like I’m gonna end up adding one to my roster of handhelds sooner or later 😅😂
The screen protector glue fits into the etching on the glass, looks fine.
Damn, what a deeeep review this is. Thanks.
I actually like the light bleed, especially on the translucent shell. You can see it's fully charged while it's off from both the top and the front. I'm constantly changing between chargers in my work vehicle and being able to see what's fully charged at a glance without having to move the device is convenient.
The white looks really clean, to be honest.
Thanks for getting it so we can live vicariously through you lol
irrc, Valve recommends not using screen protectors on the etched displays as it can interfere with tactility.
The urge to put a PS1 logo on this steam deck is immense!!! 🔥🔥🔥
This takes me back to the iconic Xbox 360 white controller! It brings a wave of nostalgia and memories of countless gaming sessions.
I already have the translucent limited edition and love it but the white looks great too. Glad they didn't come out at the same time or it would be a difficult choice!
Would be interested to hear what your daily drivers are (with details of use case), love hearing your pros on the handhelds Russ!
brother im sorry but the white oled with the black killswitch case slaps. looks amazing
The white ally is gorgeous. I sold mine and bought the ally X. I wish the X was white
White is Right, and White is so beautiful.
I like the etched glass when playing in dark environments
Love how white deck looks, wanted white version since I bought lcd deck 2 years ago
Fixed, thanks!
Steam Deck 2 with exactly the same stick and touchpad layout in white with updated internals would be great!
That thing does look clean 😍
I was just thinking about a SteamDeck OLED yesterday 😂 because I been waiting for mine to be sent over to the new place and it’s been a year and I’m like 🫠 maybe I should get a new Steam Deck 😂 perfect timing. This looks great!
I almost picked it up. This would be my first steam deck.
My biggest concern was with when my kids play with it the dirt will show a lot more on the white.
I was also worried about finding the different colors on the controls since they are not black.
Don't let your kids touch that thing. Get 'em each an RG28XX 😂
Glad to see you discovered Selaco!
It cuts through grim like a hot knife through warm butter.
got mine on pre order launch, now i wana upgrade.
You know you’ve made it when you have a “vacation Steam Deck.” 😂
Russ is balling fo sho 💰
I have it and it’s so creamy white and lighter than the OG it makes me marveling at it instead of playing it.
certainly not ideal to have to do it, but if the light bleed is annoying anyone else who has one, then it is totally possible to lower the led brightness in system settings till its only visible where it should be
It reminds me of the old IBM keyboards and stuff like the Apple 2! I love that muted color. Great video Russ, waiting for the next one😁
Russ it would be cool if you could make a "Steam Deck OLED One Year Later" video. I miss your coverage of the Steam Deck and it would be nice to hear your updated thoughts on the system and if you still use it as your primary Portable PC for most games.
the game of the year, balatro , good review btw
I love my OG Steam Deck but BROOOO im so jelly that white Deck is sooooo CLEAN 😎
The wipes are from Walmart. Equate is one of their in-house brands.
I got mine on Friday 🎉
