I had a Alienware Alpha Console, which was basically a steam machine, during the initial start of the xbox one/ps4 era, and it was a stout little machine. I upped the memory to 8gb (came with 4),it had the GeForce 860M gpu, and unfortunately was the i3 version. I was able to play a lot of pc games for the time and a decent spec. I'd welcome Steam coming into the console market, mainly because Microsoft seems like they are on their way out, and just lean more to cloud, and having their app on so many devices. This way, if Steam comes in, Sony won't have a monopoly on the market.

I love the idea of Steam OS. There is software to use your computer to build a PC obviously, a server, a emulation console and a media centre. But there hasn't really been a good option to build a console for modern games until Steam OS. I am still hoping Windows adds a console mode that can be booted directly into though.

  • @pixels_2124
    @pixels_2124 Месяц назад +3

I've seen a lot of people confused on why SteamOS is as anticipated as it is, and in my opinion, its because it cuts out the middle men and general bloat seen on Windows, Mac, or even other Linux distributions.
As of now, its specialised software for easy access PC gaming, and allows Valve greater control over the environment that the games they sell are running in.
For example, let's say a Windows update somehow bricks a game that Valve sold through Steam. The customer is now upset and wants a refund.
Valve can't fix this issue themselves, so they issue the refund and are now at the mercy of the games developers and/or Microsoft for fixing this issue.
However, if a SteamOS update somehow bricks a game, Valve can now go in and apply a game specific hothix within the operating system itself, or outright revert any changes that bricked said game in the first place.
They don't have to heavily rely on external factors anymore. They can just do it themselves, and much faster, and we've seem them do that multiple times with games on the Steam Deck. Even going as far as making some games preform better because they could change something on the backend.
Now that still doesn't stop games braking or running poorly because the of something game developers have done, but neither dose the operating system on PlayStaion or Xbox.

This would create a healthy competition of consoles, unlike Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo, which fight with exclusives AKA something anti-consumer.

I'm surprised that Valve didn't just offer the OS up for Download, and work with vendors like Asus, Dell, Acer, Minisforum, etc to have it included as the default OS for the small PC boxes that use the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 (would perform about the same as the SteamDeck, if not a bit better).
I'm surprised EPIC hasn't made their own front-end Big Picture Mode, like Steam, that runs under Windows and can boot into, again like Steam. And work with vendors with old parts (Ryzen 5000, RX-6000/7000) to make "EPIC Chest" machine....something like a small Console Like (not mini, but an MATX or ITX based PC, think Silverstone SUGO) box, Windows based, boots to "EPIC Picture Mode" have Fortnite, Fallguys and Rocket League, pre-installed, include 1,000 VBucks, sell a box with a Ryzen 5 5600+Radeon RX-6600 for $599.99 (undercut PS5-Pro). Beat Valve to the punch.
I'd prefer if EPIC make a fork of SteamOS, based on Linux+Proton, would be bad-ass.
I'd build my own SteamMachine and EPIC CHEST as the modern SNES and Genesis. Or just have one machine run both.

They can't yet. NVidia is the most common GPU and the OSS NVidia drivers are still under heavy development. SteamOS relies on a piece of software called Gamescope to make Game mode work (it's really NOT 'just' big picture mode)...that relies on a display protocol called Wayland that NVidia is not quite there yet with on their own proprietary drivers and the performance of the OSS drivers is not quite there yet. Valve take advantage of the AMD OSS drivers to the point of modifying/improving them to work with their OS....they will want the same with NVidia H/W.

When the Steam Deck was announced at a $399 price point, I told my friends, This is the end of PlayStation! They called me crazy! I said “this means that the PS 5 All digital SHOULD have been a handheld and since that isn’t the case and they’ve let Valve enter the market with a HYBRID device that can plays ELDEN RING on DAY 1 at $399, it’s over for PlayStation “ ….. this just further proves my point! PlayStation’s ONLY saving grace is GTA6 only launching on consoles! That COULD buy PlayStation time to come up with a new strategy but, it’s pretty much over! PlayStation TRIED to enter the market with the PS Portal but it was already too late!
For those who aren’t aware why this affect PlayStation more than XBox! 97% of the PC Gaming market runs on Windows OS! Xbox and Microsoft are about to launch a steam deck like device WITH a GAMING CENTERED Windows OS!
This will mean, Steam OS and Windows OS will fight it out for who dominates “Gaming OS”….. think of Android on smart devices! Both Windows and Steam will fight to have their OS on as many gaming devices as possible! Just like your laptop might be Samsung but runs Windows and mine is Toshiba but runs windows….. the “console” will no longer be what it was in the past where the same company made the OS and Hardware!
It’ll be Steam OS, Windows Gaming OS and Nintendo in the gaming space with PlayStation becoming the SEGA of this generation! I predict that the next MAJOR acquisition will be a big tech company buying PlayStation from Sony! Meta, Google etc …. Sony PlayStation is dead !
Remember, Sony DOMINATED portable audio until MP3 killed that! Sony DOMINATED home video until Streaming killed that….. that’s exactly where PlayStation is now… it won the home console era… it has NO CHANCE in the Server/OS era.

Hi, there is a potential new secretive processor for this Steam OS macnine. A very little low energy cheap parrallel processor that can come in a 6Ghzx40 core configuration, which is 240Ghz processing power (is suspect even higher on a cutting edge non low energy fab node). Likely between 32 and 64 bits. Sort of thing you could put in a watch, if you had big enough battery). The thing has been manufactured, but is not released to the public, so hardly any public information. But, I think one guy working on it was talking a few milliwatts, where ever the who chip or per core, I'm not sure, but likely at a low energy manufacturing node at 1.5Ghz or less per chip. But still a good indication that this is suitable for a nandheld at 6Ghz. These sort of low energy nodes can go below 600mhz. We have the US Based low energy processor record holder in another company (green arrays) who also has an advanced chip design they would like to get done. 10Ghz+ would not be out of the question. The 6Ghz one talked about, I would imagine has some other processing functions apart from cpu. Paired with a gpu, it may make a nice all-around gaming platform.
So, as we are moving to x86 Windows code on Arm platforms, the way to make these near native speed are getting well understood. So, it's possible that a really cheap chip like the agregate 240Ghz processing power one above could be used to run Linux and proton and transliterate x86 windows code into it's native code, and run on pocket, handheld and desktop machines, completely breaking the x86, arm and riscv monopolies. Like I long wanted to do. There is this potential contender floating about being kept under wraps.
What you haven't addressed, is if it is a Nintendo Switch like processing environment, with multiple portable devices which can connect to a wireless/hard dock with its own beefier processor, allowing multiple play of freinds come over. This would likely use a full hdmi.

If it is a console like system (VR maybe another option), it will run linux (Valve a few months back have officially sponsored Arch Linux [btw] - which is the base for their SteamOS on the Deck) - hardware most likely be AMD - amd on linux is 'generally' 5-10% faster than windows (nvidia is currently about 10% slower) - there is still more perf to be had for linux (amd/nvidia) once wayland goes full native - probably next year. Linux is in a funny spot where they have been working on moving from X11 to Wayland, and transitioning with xWayland. the AMD drivers are open source and baked into the kernel. If it sells well it may assist in less devs using kernel level anti-cheat (nobody should be supporting kernel level anti-cheat so would be a good thing for the users across the board). The old steam machines failed as they needed devs to port windows games to linux native as WINE wasn't developed. Of course this didn't happen, since then VALVE has been working with WINE, developing proton so now pretty much any game is great day 1 launch (anticheat is a different matter).

But I would really love to be able to purchase a console-like system that just works out of the box. I hate building PCs and dealing with drivers and other software nonsense. But I can't go to a console because they are too closed off and restrictive in what you could do. Valve could finally bridge the gap with a new Steam Machine. The stage is properly set this time.

It gets exaggerated how much gaming on Linux grew because of the SteamDeck. Yes, non-tech-savy users started to use Linux for gaming thanks to the SteamDeck, no argument about that. But the Linux marketshare for gaming only doubled at best, that is nice and good but Linuxgaming was a thing before the SteamDeck and by far the most games just ran fine before the SteamDeck got launched. However, the SteamDeck did give Valve some pressure to finally remove DRM on a few games which still were broken because of that DRM, for example BioSchok Infinite (before then only playable natively with OpenGL, that gives atrocious performance, especially on AMD-GPU's).

Well it comes down to games. Steam has more games than any other console platform out there. If they create a controller that can do all types of games, have the right price point and performance, and offer the similar type of services, Valve can dominate this space.
Right now, though, they don’t need to dominate. They just need to sell enough hardware to justify the cost of developing it, just like with Steam Deck. And those are flying off the shelves. Valve wants to replicate this model with a home console unit. Zen5/RDNA4 are good candidates for that as well. Better than PS5 Pro with more games that support the horsepower.

Easy buy for me I’m done with consoles but PCs are too expensive and difficult to understand. Give me pro power with a better cpu, modding, and pc exclusives for under 1000

Personally i wont buy a steam console ill stick with my pc and steam deck i also have alot of other accounts besides steam /like gog /epic and xbox app . Cool idea if they do it will give consoles more competition which they do need.

Dont worry. I can hate Microsoft and Windows for you. This Valve Home Console sounds great. If that console is a success, then competitors will have to get better or suffer.

Unless Valve creates a company around curating regular releases and bankrolls AAA exclusives the resukts will be the same as the last Steam Machine failure.
Gabe Newell just does the seem to really want to have an active role in much of any large corporate entity like PlayStation.
If Sony switches to Apple Silicon AMD will likely launch a console and Nvidia might as well. One of them might tap Sega to partner with.

Steam Machines failed for a number of reasons, including:
      • Market demand: Steam Machines tried to bridge the gap between consoles and home computers, but most consumers preferred one or the other.
      • Performance: A 2015 Ars Technica report found that games performed worse on SteamOS than on Windows 10.
      • External manufacturers: Steam Machines relied on external manufacturers, which created challenges.

its very unlikely that sony will switch to apple silicion, since apple silicon is just arm customized for apple, its more likely they will negotiate directly with arm instead.

Playstation needs keyboard&mouse support for RTS and build games. Even still, I prefer keyboard&mouse for Diablo like isometric action rpg's, needless to say turn based ones like BG3.
