Chopin allegedly walked in on Liszt chasing one of his students naked around the piano.
Nathan Drake Liszt was naked or the student was naked?
Yes.
Joseph Potter you're evil
Constance Richards Chopin's student was naked
I'm naked right now... I don't know how to play piano.
I must be a classical genius. Because last time i sang, i was accused of trying to end the world.
Konstantin Urich Savage
Konstantin Urich so was Alexander strabend (i don't know how to pronounce that guys name)
L
@Fred Crazy da Shmoo It's Alexander Scriabin
Konstantin Urich: Well perhaps if you didn't spend the money your Mother gave you for singing lessons on weed and beer....... just saying.
The 1812 Overture uses cannons as instruments. Nothing is more metal than that.
And yes, if anyone's not sure, he means the fiil-it-with-gun-powder-and-strike-a-match kind of cannons. Look up some videos of it here on RUclips; it's awesome.
LexiDizzle except for the 2nd movement of Shostakovich's 8th string quartet.
Or a shotgun with blanks fired into a steel drum.
3 solidiers and 2 civilians died during the first performance of music for the royal fireworks by Handel due to the cannons and fireworks. Oh and also the stage burnt down
tchaikovsky was gay 😌
I still cant see how people find opera boring, they are beautiful
Walter Carvalho thank you we try as singers to make it work
Well if I found screaming beautiful I would of had kids.
Walter Carvalho I think it mostly has to do with opera being set apart from other media as the art of the privileged. The pageantry and aristocratic roots have basically cemented opera as "that thing rich people do", like polo or pissing on the peasantry.
I'm a big fan of symphonies, concertos, and sonatas, but to be honest I don't really enjoy music with singing. Operas, lieder, etc. just don't interest me for the most part.
I used to think that until I heard Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten- an opera about a fisherman who is driven to suicide after being accused of being a paedophile. It's bloody brilliant and opened my eyes to other operas. Partly I think it's the fact that it's in English and the style of singing is relatively pure and comprehensible, so you can properly get into the story and words.
As someone who's actually a classical vocalist in training I 100% agree with how ridiculous this field of work really is. I'm already on degree #2, ass-deep in debt, and because I haven't hit my vocal peak yet (it happens right around your early 30s) I have to spend the next 7+ years somehow feeding myself while not wrecking my voice in the meantime. I'm going to be in debt for literally 30+ years after school. Please support the arts.
Congratulations, your life difficulty mode is "extreme art student". Good luck.
JackSassyPants if it's so hard rock, why is it only enjoyed by old people in tuxedos who shush you?
***** That's not even including the whole "gay" thing. :O
vitamindubya I mean a lot of patrons of the arts tend to be older but they aren't the only ones who enjoy it. I know a lot of younger people who do, both performers and not. It kind of sucks though because there are so many stereotypes that go along with classical music that discourage new people from getting into it, which is something the field as a whole is working on disproving.
Wow, that's dedication. Hope it all works out for you!
JackSassyPants I have seen cool modern classical music that tries, like Trans Siberian orchestra
OK but imagine the vampire who lived through every one of those composers. "I fucked that composer. That composer. That one too. That one fought me off with a stick."

I always guessed Mussorgsky was a Vampire Hunter... Always carrying that stick/stake around...
Mozart's musical joke, if I remember correctly, was more than just making musicians look incompetent - he also poked fun at incompetent composers by cramming every bad stylistic device he could think of in there and overusing all of it to a hilarious extent. I'm pretty sure the sole purpose of that piece is to make everybody involved cringe as much as possible.
There's also an old anecdote about Mozart having to write an aria for a soprano he didn't get along with - she also had the habit of raising her head when singing high notes and lowering it when singing deep notes. Mozart, being Mozart, filled the thing with pitch jumps wherever possible, and was unreasonably amused by her bobbing her head like a chicken.
mozart likes poop jokes
like a lot
This is why the masterpiece motion picture 'Amadeus' is like watching Jack Sparrow as composer
Mozart make a piece that goes by the name “leck mich im arsch” which kinda translates to “kiss my ass”
the aria for the soprano he hated is "queen of the night" in "the magic flute" her name was Josepha Hofer she was his sister-in-law =P
we need to get a good orchestra to play mysterium for 7 days straight, ending just as the presidential inauguration commences.
Dan Brew I'm not the only one who thought that.
Well, the author died before he could complete the piece, so it can never be played as he intended.
as long as in culminates in the end of the world, it's as intended.
Dan Brew it will be even without the music to your overly liberal mind.
if you want to pay 50% of your income to take care of a bunch of lazy wankers who refuse to work and don't have a medical reason. please do the rest of us a favor and get out
The fuck are you on about? Nevermind, just thought I'd drop by to say your understanding of taxes and unemployment is grade school at best. I won't tell you to get out, just to understand that a person sardonically commenting about the end of the world lining up with inauguration is clearly a joke intended for someone with a better sense of humor.
Because you're obviously just upset no one likes the Trump as much as you; bird brains of a feather flock together. You at least share the same level communication skills.
I can't imagine how some people think classical music is boring. To me, it's the most intense music out there. I think classical music demands a higher attention span, and an ability to retain musical ideas for longer periods of time. What I mean by that is: if pop music is like 3+4+5, it wouldn't require a long attention span to remember all the numbers so you can come up with =12. But with classical music, the musical ideas run longer and demand your full attention to "understand" the music, so it's more like 3+5+8+12+2+5+2+8+3+5+3+5=56. In classical, you need to absorb the music as a whole rather than just some fragmented parts here and there, where as in popular music, you really don't. Really though, listen to Bach's violin sonata no 1 and tell me you don't want to cry. I can't imagine how anyone isn't inspired by music like that...
*insert THANK YOU gif here*
I agree that classical music is very intense, but not every piece is as complex as you say it is. I think most of the reason people don't get into classical is because it "seems" difficult and because of its perceived elitist culture. But if people just gave it a try they would see it's different than how they think.
***** It's not even about complexity though. It's that the musical ideas take longer to play out, so attention is a must.
yeah oh right The same could be said about albums though. Rush - 2112 is 20 minutes long. Pink Floyd - The Wall is an hour. It's just now albums are separated into songs that can be enjoyed individually, or as a whole. I like a lot of classical music, but there's lots of good music today as well.
The Lonely Taco Of course there's good music today as well, I listen to a lot of modern stuff. But I think you're wrong to equate the attention you need to enjoy something like Pink Floyd's the wall with the attention you need to enjoy, say, Brahms violin concerto. I can play any random song off the wall and enjoy it as is, but I can't, as a new listener, skip straight to the 7th minute mark of Brahms violin concerto and fully enjoy the piece. The Rush song is a better example, because all the musical ideas you need to enjoy it are contained within the 20 minute song, and you need to understand it as a whole to like it. But, you'll find the same thing with Rush as you'll find in classical music: a lot of people don't like Rush because their attention span isn't long enough. If you think I'm trying to take modern music down a notch, you're wrong. I really like listening to stuff like tool, radiohead, bjork, queens of the stone age, death grips, etc. But I like them for different reasons then I like classical music. Both are great, but nothing gives me goosebumps like classical.
Who knew classical music was so metal?
*NIGHTWISH!* mic drop
I knew.... hahahahaha
Wagner is often considered the literal Godfather of metal. His orchestration and arrangement techniques were copied in the early days by Black Sabbath and the likes.
Tbh metal is so classical
try the finale of Bartok's 4th string quartet
You really should've included their music in the video. And end with Tchaikovsky's cannons from 1812 Overture. Because that IS awesome.
Let's be honest, everything by Tchaikovsky is awesome. While 1812 is amazing, I would contend his 6th symphony was his greatest work. Of course there's always Swan Lake, but it feels to obvious to advocate that.
yeah, i was also pretty disappointed by the lack of musical samples. i don't want to have to google a bunch of classical music in order to fully experience a youtube video.
I think of Tchaikovsky's *Fourth* Symphony as the Coronary Symphony (you know, like Haydn's Surprise only more so). The third movement is this delicate pizzicato (plucked string) piece, then the fourth starts with an almighty crash from the whole orchestra including percussion and brass. I went to a performance many years ago with a highly-strung friend who was at the time going out with the principal double bass player of the orchestra. We sat up the front, and when the crash came, she squeaked and jumped, and he smiled evilly at her.

celticwolff Now try saying that with a Lisp
He got with so many people, we can't even Liszt them all!
I've always thought that classical music was pretty awesome. Anyone know if Vivaldi did anything crazy?
He was a red-haired, probably asthmatic babe-magnet who despite being ordained did a lot of groupie sex and once once created a choir/orchestra of orphans. And that's just a start...
Tracey Donaldson Well, he was called to work as composer for one of Venice orphanages.
He didn't. Or if he did, it was only with Anna Tessieri Girò.
ErraticMagics He was an eccentric ginger priest at an all-girls' orphanage/school, what more do you want?? hahaha
Well, it probably helped his sex life that he was the music master in charge of an entirely female orphanage where the girls were all trained to become expert musicians.
To be fair Schoenberg did die on Friday the 13th so he was kind of right =P
0:24 *EVERY PIECE IS NOT A SONG! A SONG IS A PIECE THAT HAS LYRICS!* music nerd rant over
Every classical musician whenever someone refers to a piece as a song.
Van Halen's M&M preferences where actually there to make sure that the venue organizers read the complete contract and safety protocols as they had dangerous pyrotechnics in the show.
Samuel Doten And they demanded brown M&Ms, not green.
So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show.
You forgot my favorite Mozart story. He went to see allegri's misere when he was young, the Vatican had exclusive rights to the piece and it was only played in 2 churches ever. Mozart went, wrote down the whole score went back for a second listening just to check then sold it to everyone .... technically making him the first music pirate (move over napster!). When the pope found out he summoned him to the Vatican, not to punish him but to congratulate him on his cleverness ...
Three minutes of opera and no mention of castrati? That has to be the single most insane idea anyone has come up with in music history.
what abput tchaikoswky use of cannons?

Sikov Stupidity yeaaa I'll just take your word for it...
If you think classical music is boring, you clearly don't like music
I mean, if i'm honest, classical music can be (mostly as a listener) boring. I often find playing a lot more exciting (I play violin and piano), and since performing is stress city it gets hard to be bored. Plus I like to think that what I have spent countless hours practicing isn't boring. But as a listener, to some extent, it gets _REALLY_ boring. There are some pieces I absolutely adore, but there are also some that just don't manage to keep my attention. Like, hour long symphonies are cool and all, and props to the musicians (lord knows I appreciate the effort and stamina and practice needed for that kind of thing) but it's boring to listen to for me, sorry.
Idk where I was going with this. Just kind of a statement of my opinion, I guess.
People think only Mozart and Beethoven exist, but actually this is a genre with genres inside it.
and you clearly are a snob
@@oiajwoadgea6123 I'd rather be a snob than be unable to recognise good musical composition
@@madhatterman01 sure snob. You are that. One of those "its old so it must be the best".
Music without proper meaningful lyrics is just an incomplete thing which gets boring in a week.
Just like einstein improved upon newton to make better theories in physics , just like edison's bulb has been improved upon by mankind , just like how wheels are better than it was before , just like mathematics has been improved upon , in the same way Bob Dylan , Rabindranath Tagore , and The Beatles have improved upon Beethoven mozart or bach.
I don't know about anyone else, but I fucking love opera.
Yeah. I'm actually a little insulted he keeps calling it boring. Also, I already knew most of these things. The whole title is a lie to me.
Shauna Force doesn't say a you didn't know part
also opera is boring (and seperate to classical, which I like)
Pokerface ok, it was mentioned multiple times..
About Van Halen's green M&Ms, it was a clause included in the contract to assure themselves the organizer actually read it. The contract was several pages on sound and light accomodation requirements and the organizer would not always meet them because they didn't read the specifics of the contract. So by randomly throwing in the green M&M demand in the contract Van Halen knew when arriving at the venue whether or not the organizer read the contract.
It was brown m&ms. Other than that you are correct
@@oddbender423 I thought the contract was "absolutely no brown M&Ms." I'll try to run it thru gargle.
Classical music and its world is utterly amazing. Everyone should have more exposure to it.
Classical music wasn't meant to be listened to by filth!
@@JohnQPublic11 such a pretentious statement
I stand by my position that John Cage is an overly esoteric, pretentious asshat
Also, Johann Sebastian Bach got into a swordfight over calling someone a "Ninnygoat" and tearing a bassoonist's clothing. As well as instigating what was essentially a gang war between buskers who played and sang in the streets. Dude was a surprisingly badass brawler
Samuel Fister Bach also got jailed 'cos he took a holiday from the church he worked at and didn't return for a month longer than he should have.

It's all in the upbringing.

Also, you never mentioned that Gesualdo murdered his wife for cheating, and got away with it because he was a nobleman.
Mozart also wrote 'Dificile Lectu', a set of Latin nonsense written for his Bavarian friend so it would sound like he was swearing at the audience. The best part is 'jonicu' repeated over and over, which sounds like 'cujoni', Italian for 'balls'.
Wait...classical music isn't lame :((((((((
But the background information makes it even better.
Peter Schipper yes yes you're very sophisticated
Peter Schipper I'm a music major. A composer and theory major. I like classical music
Edward Yanes ho-ho-ho!
Dude... music is built into all life and most widely used by humans

A music major huh? That probably means you need the sheet music in front of you but honestly if you can hum a tune you can play piano
Ps. You're not the only composer, and being one doesn't mean you're a good one
Everyone likes classical music and old movies are just better and back in the day is when we all feel like we were meant to be alive

Important Note about Stravinsky and the famous riot of the Rite of Spring(Ballet) :
The opening of the song was indeed controversial when it was heard in the first place, but the riot really started when the dancers came to the stage and started doing Barbaric moves along with the piece. That was created the biggest scandal as people were forced to get out of theater by police.
So not only the piece, but the ballet was extremely scandalous.
Actually the green m&ms thing is actually a safety measure. They wanted to be sure that the people setting up the stage actually read all their contract. It's actually a really smart idea. If they didn't read it, they would just give him a bunch of m&ms that he asked for, but if they weren't all green, he wouldn't play because they clearly DIDNT READ THE SAFTEY MEASURES. Pure (slightly crazy) genius
This video ruled. Loved it! This series has the potential to have such great topics.

what about chaickowsky use of cannons in an opera
Andrei Skobtsov Tchaikovsky*
I mean they were unloaded, and weird percussion is actually pretty common in orchestra pieces too. Mahler's 6th Symphony literally has a part written for a GIANT hammer hitting a table. Like, a hammer the size of the one from SSB randomly hitting a giant block in the middle of an orchestral symphony. It's real I promise, look it up.
The hammer of fate yay. also the cannons weren't for opera, it was for the 1812 overture.

I've sung "Duetto buffo di due gatti". It's pretty fun. We wore cat ears.
The first time I ever heard it I was quite young, and the progrma note just said "A translation of this piece was not available at time of printing." then I sat there wondering if I was allowed to laugh! Also, I thought during the video "Unattributed?! Rossini!" but apparently
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duetto_buffo_di_due_gatti
it was just mostly borrowed from him, possibly by Pearsall of all people.
This is the old classic for when people say Classical music is boring, but I'm going to pull it out anyway - Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture is literally written to include a battery of cannons
sounds pretty depressing to work extremely hard your whole life to have a small chance to compete to maybe win a position doing grueling exhausting music that an extremely small fraction of people even find tolerable or even pay attention to, let alone pay to watch.
I hope the musicians are compensated very well for their massive investment because this industry doesn't sound very profitable.
Generally we're not well compensated (in the United States at least) unless you make it to a major opera house or a major orchestra but we keep going because we genuinely like what we do. There are slightly more people than you'd anticipate that actually do like classical music but unfortunately there's not enough support for the arts to really make sure this is a stable job for anyone involved. Also this is the kindest comment I've seen in here so thank you for being so understanding.
We're not.. Ha.ha. :(
I'm studying music as my minor (I play viola), so I know a few people who are looking to do this professionally as well as some who are already pros. Most musicians in an orchestra are teaching as well, at local schools or universities. It seems insane when you think about it. One bassist in town is in the orchestra, plays for the musical theater, teaches private lessons, and teaches orchestra at a high school where there are at least 200 kids playing string instruments alone. But he loves it, and everyone I know who's doing this loves it. That's what keeps them going.
xenoblad it's definitely a pyramid... If you are at the top, you are doing VERY well. If you're not, it's a livable income, but is usually irregular per-service work. If you have a salaried position, it gives you greater freedom to teach, tour and self promote vs struggling to find the next gig.
Read this to see how hard it is to get into a major orchestra, it's a really good read. www.bostonmagazine.com/2012/06/boston-symphony-orchestra-audition/
appreciated the part about opera singers, as I happen to be one.
If you want some daring composers, I feel like you could just walk through Shostakovitch's life.
Discovered the 5th and the 11th!!! Lucky me. Whoa and some Mahler sounds great right about now!!!
He pretty much had to have a career whilst surviving Stalin taking offence at random. Poor old Prokofiev died on *the same day* as Stalin.
I did not know that about Prokofiev. But have studied a biography of Shostakovitch and he means so much to me... I felt like I would have laid down my life so that he could live. Pure talent and genius and I feel so much humanity from his music. But then I do love Mahler and so did Shostakovitch!!! It was said "which was his favor Mahler... and he replied "well there is the first, then well the second and then the third and so on through Mahler's entire repertory... LOL

Awesome time perspective. Why is classic music "classic", because they were the Rockstars. If your inspire or influence everyone, even to sway emotions. This is what I respect of music, Do your best you can with what you got to give it your all to your audience. x)
It's unfortunate you don't have the same respect for language.

As a professional guitarist, I get this. Because Van Halen put The Green candy thing into their contract with the event centers to make sure they would pay attention to the little details, the ones that prevent you from being electrocuted by the 30,000 volts of electricity used to power the dozens of amplifiers being used at the same time, or making sure the stage, which has to hold a full drum set, many many amps, the band, and any number cables, computers, and live soundboards. It's a dangerous job. It takes finess, skill and more practice than a nfl football player. Music is hard, but it's fun. And saying your a pro guitarist for a living is a billion times better than saying you work in a tiny little cubicle.
You missed the nifty little detail that Scriabin's Mysterium was meant to be blared from huge speakers attached to Zeppelins for those seven days.
is it just me or is the placement of his hands of putting or awkward
I'm cringing at that pronunciation of Debussy
This should be a series sooo much

I like opera. Who thinks opera is boring? I mean besides boring people. Okay, maybe that's a little harsh but I cannot stand this new wave of anti intellectual, stupidity celebrating, pseudo people. I don't think most people are like that but many are. To them I say, life is full of art, beauty, amazing science, sex, history and it's the human experience. Try it.
your pronunciation is painful
It's grammatically correct Daniel Hodge
Did you really edit your mistake?
DatBoy SoTalented I do that all the time
Another thing about Mozart, he had a rivalry with opera singer Adriana Ferrarese del Bene, who had a habit of lifting her head when singing high notes and lowering her head when singing low notes. So when he was tasked with writing an aria for her, "Come scoglio", he purposely filled it with harmonic leaps, making her head bob like a chicken.
Good direction to go, infotainment is why I like cracked, keep true to your roots.
