Hotter than hell is my second favorite Kiss album and I purchased it at the same time as the debut right after Rock and Roll Over came out. I tried to bring it to school so my class could hear it but my third grade teacher wouldn't hear of it once she saw the album cover. I remember hanging out at the Village back in the late 80s and thinking about all the great albums recorded there like this one. Coming Home might have been my favorite back then and I much prefer the studio version as well. To me the production sounds just the way it should, I guess when you're a kid it's just all about the songs. Great show , Take care

Ace wrote the descending part of "Comin' Home" - it's the same progression as the chorus of "What's On Your Mind" from his 1978 solo album - Paul definitely wrote the verses and pre-chorus

The albums suffers from terrible mixing and production. The band wasn’t happy with it and the producers Wise and Kerner admitted much later that it is bad. Sounds like it was recorded in a tin can. Too bad as some good tunes on the album

As a 9 y/o KI$$ fan back in early '75, I would stare, spellbound, at the album cover art for HTH, in a fantastical, lustful haze. I feel that this jacket art along with 'Rock and Roll Over' rise to the top as being nothing short of pure, eye-poppin' KI$$ bliss.

Paul's recommendation of im old as fu## and your 16 was weird, even in 1974 lol. Hotter than hell is my #1. I've heard literally every podcast about the people involved with this album lol. My friends and I were always attracted to Frehley 's song for some reason, they weren't normal KISS songs, they were usually 4 minutes long and he didn't sing them, yet. Who was this guy? Never heard him speak, he was never asked anything in any video interviews I got lucky to see, in the 1970'S, no youtube ya know. But his songs were fun to learn and like a extra bonus feature on the albums. They got more melodic as he got better at writing and the chord progressions are heavy, Sabbath like in some places like Strange Ways. Not a KISS song, more of a Black Sabbath song, well it could have been. With all the energy and thrust that Parasite brings to the album, it's Strange Ways that is slow, heavy and using sliding power chords, so cool! Parasite had some sliding riffs too. Ace's songs were always a treat. Stanley and Simmons shine on this album as well, my personal fave is Watchin' You, this version or live, it just JAMS! A great riff in G, always fun to bring out at an open jam, cuz no one knows it, LOL!!!
Like I said, this album is an improvement over the first one, I guess it didn't sell as well at first, it still went gold. There's a good and great stuff going on here, next album was even better in so many ways!

Good album review. I love this album. Prob top 3 for me. The grungy sound makes it heavier I think and def a different sounding album. The songs are fantastic. I remember when I starting collecting these albums around 1990, that I waited on hotter than hell cause I had Alive and most of those songs were on alive. So my brother got it before me, and when i heard goin blind, coming home and strange ways - I was like” I gotta have this album now. It was a difficult album to find in 1990. Strange ways, to me, is aces best solo and he has a lot of em or I should say all of his kiss solos are great. But this one reaches way out into outer space. I’d love to hear a different production on this album to see if it makes it better but I love it the way it is. Love the cover as well

This could have been my overall favourite Kiss album if not for the sound. The front and back album covers together are better than all others. Parasite is the best song and there are some awesome deep cuts like All The Way and Mainline on here. LMGRNR and HTH are far inferior compared to Alive! versions. I think She should have replaced Goin' Blind. I agree, from DTK episode, that She doesn't fit as well on DTK as it would on the heavier HTH.
Great episode again guys... keep rockin' and making more great reviews.

Sometimes, learning these older songs even when they came out on CD was still a trip, back then it was common practice to slow down or speed up reel to reel tapes for a singer or sometimes just to confuse the guys who would wanna learn how to play it. Over in England they used terms like Half Tone, Semi Tone and things and the Rolling Stones recordings are all over the spectrum as far as being A-440, in tuning. Reel to reels allowed bands to do all kinds of things as well all know as far as speeds go. The song Hotter Than Hell and even years later, Heaven's On Fire are in weird tunings, slightly up or down from where the rest of the album is. At least Frehley was writing songs, he has 3 credits and even though no of them ever got radio play, he was contributing. Criss was not, yet. All of his tantrums which have come to light over the years, I might have let him go back then if I was Simmons or Stanley, drummers can be replaced. When they were getting along it all came together, it sounded great and it was powerful! Not sure where the singles were being released to, Nothin' To Lose and Let Me Go, Rock 'N Roll weren't heard on the radio here in my neck of the woods. I didn't know anybody talking about KISS until after Alive! was out, but I didn't hear them until I heard Detroit Rock City and saw them on the People's Choice Awards show and saw Peter singing, thought he was the lead singer, I had no idea how they worked yet. I was only 10 and was still deep in my Beatle years. That changed very quick after I got a copy of Alive! to learn.

This is a major improvement over the first album in a lot of ways. Tempos are better, these arena ready songs sound better, but are still over reverbed in a few places. Vocally the guys sound more like themselves. Drums sound tighter and not so boomy on this album. Peter was pounding his heart out on this album. Guitars sound awesome, powerful and full, not as tinny like on the first album. Wise & Kerner must have watched them out on tour somewhere and maybe it clicked, these guys sound so much better when they play live rather than slowing them down. I would think they recorded the first two albums as a band, live take after take with over dubs afterwards. Very Beatles like, headphones on, scratch vocals and redone after all the music was done. Some Wicked Lester leftovers/remakes here, like the first album and the next, a good song is a good song, just take out the flutes and turn up the guitars and you get a damn good song. They also had a backlog of songs at this time, Paul & Gene were fast writers, they were hungry for success at this time and trying, putting everything into the band. They always say they encouraged Frehley & Criss to write more and more good stuff or not, it might end up on an album. You wanna make money, you gotta write songs. One thing I'm not crazy about on this album is overproduction of the lead guitar. On Hotter Than Hell you can clearly hear two maybe even three lead guitars ripping as the song fades out, it however does sound great. It's not all the time on every song, but it's false.

I remember seeing the Hotter Than Hell commercial on the independent station KSTW Channel 11 in the mid-70's. I was nine years old and it grabbed my attention right away. I caught it a few times in the late afternoon between Gilligan's Island and The Monkees. At the time, KISS had a reputation that exceeded the music. In my neighborhood (Kirkland), KISS was a taboo subject similar to The Exorcist film. Rumors of Gene's boots and chickens along with the blood and the fire-breathing onstage had parents freaked out. Interestingly enough, my Mom bought my first KISS album (Dressed To Kill) for me in 1976. And I discovered the rumors weren't true. Many stories from Alice Cooper's stage theatrics would get mixed up with the KISS show.

I always suspected that Peters drum solo was misremembered and that it was attempted on Parasite. There's a drum break in the song and it's also written by Ace. It's more uptempo and it would make more sense than Strange Ways. Of course I could be totally wrong. Lol.

This was one of the last records I ever picked up as a teenager. Not sure why, we just always put off picking up the CD (this was the late 80's, The Sound Saver CD era). We were piecing together the catalog, one by one (working at Bonanza), so we were broke LOL, and we just put it off to the very end. Mistake, because when we played it, we loved it. Almost felt like the most 'metal' of all the KISS records. Of the original 3, I place HTH 3rd, only because I'm super partial to DTK. Otherwise, I know I would rank it higher. It's the one record from the catalog I have grown to appreciate the most over time. A perfect, August - Summer record. Great episode! Take care.

I would argue that Hotter Than Hell was KISS heaviest album up to until Creatures, due to some of the songs on it and the overall sound. Early metal KISS. It's truly a unique album for many reasons in the KISS catalog. And I am n the camp of NOT preferring songs on Unplugged "Coming Home & Going Blind" over the versions on this album. The versions on this song RULE. I also think Strange Ways should have been moved somewhere else and Coming Hone at the end of the album. It feels weird for Coming Home to end and Strange Ways start. Strange Ways should have ended side one maybe.

I agree that Hotter than hell and Creatures of the night are the two heaviest Kiss-albums.👍🤘 If something could be changed on Hotter than hell…..in my humbling opinion “Parasite” should be the opening tune.
I like and enjoy listening to unplugged very much. I like “Coming home” a little bit more on Unplugged.
But “Going blind” I prefer clearly the much darker and heavier Studio version of HTH.
It’s always very interesting to discuss different opinions - I enjoy it very much.👍🤘
