When I get the notification that a new episode has dropped, I know it's going to be a good time! I'd just like to begin by saying that I now have Paul Stanley singing ELEGANT MAN stuck in my head, and the song doesn't even exist! DYNASTY is one of those albums that would have worked better as a really spectacular E.P. I LOVE the Paul and Gene songs on here (With X-RAY EYES and MAGIC TOUCH being two of my favorite songs across all albums). But, for me, listening to songs that Ace sings is like eating marshmallows... You don't need to ingest that many at once, and you find it unnecessary to go back for a second no matter how much you may have enjoyed the previous one. As for DIRTY LIVIN'... It's the greatest theme song for a low budget, '70s cop drama that was never produced. In a perverse way, I would love to hear an OFF THE SOUNDBOARD during this period where Peter was sinking his career on stage nightly... I think it would be fascinating. As always, this was a good time! Happy Holidays to you and the families, gentlemen! Thanks for all you do with this channel!
Yes I agree a Dynasty Off The Soundboard would be awesome, and fascinating. I've devoured all the recordings available from that tour, but none sound very good. I guess Fresno is the best. Haha Dirty Livin' would absolutely work as a 70's cop show theme. How did I never hear that? As always thanks for tuning in, and leaving some kind words. Always look forward to your 2 cents! Happy Holidays from TMOK to you and yours! JF
I just got around to watching this video, and once again I enjoyed the casual, thoughtful conversation that you guys always engage in. My overall opinion of "Dynasty" is that it's an interesting part of the Kiss discography even if it's not one of my favorite Kiss albums. In my opinion, Ace is the star of the album, coming off of the strength of his solo album. His songs on "Dynasty" keep the band rooted in Hard Rock territory while some of the other tracks explore Disco and Funk . Sure, Kiss went Disco with "IWMFLY", but "2,000 Man" is as close to Punk as I've ever heard Kiss sound! That guitar solo is pure Sex Pistols/ Steve Jones! "Dirty Living" kind of strikes me as a Hard Rock version of "Staying Alive" and the breakdown section in "Charisma" is straight out of the Disco play book for every 12" Disco single of that era. I think the album could've used another Paul song, though. "Sure Know Something " and "Magic Touch" are fine, but I think "Dynasty" would've benefited from a rocker along the lines of "I Stole Your Love" or "Move On". Something with some swagger. The Return of Kiss/Super Kiss was the 1st Kiss concert that I went to, back in 79 at the Providence Civic Center in RI and my 14 year old mind was blown away! At this point, they'd ditched the Gene and Peter solo songs and replaced them with "Let Me Go, Rock & Roll" and "Christine Sixteen". I think it's ironic that the 79 tour was heralded as the Return of Kiss, because they hadn't really been away! Also, they really did themselves a disservice by branding themselves as a "kiddie band" and I think all of these things factored into the inevitable "Kiss sucks!" downfall that would follow...
I was made for loving you and Sure know something were played on my local radio station in 79. Sure know something faded away after a few weeks and all you heard was IWMFLY . I actually enjoyed Dynasty more than Love gun and i still do. Also once i heard Save your Love i knew it wasn't Peter drumming. Theres only 2 or 3 songs that sound like Peter drumming on . Anton did an excellent job . Great episode!
Back when "Sure Know Something" came out, I used to hear it all the time, in my room after 7PM. We had a contemporary top 40 FM station, which was very cool. But...after 7PM - there was no jocks on the air, until 5 or 6AM when the morning show came on. I didn't learn that "Sure Know Something" was a Kiss song until the late 1990s. Same with "Shandi." Shows you how "variable" airplay was for Kiss back then.
"It's a headphones song, people." Lol Love the direct album cover but the uneven green on Peter's eyes has always irked me. Though it was surprisingly Gene-deficient, Ace more than filled the void. (No pun intended.) Although back then I automatically loved EVERYTHING they did, with Dynasty it was official...KISS was no longer even remotely dangerous. I too foolishly thought the KISS Radio only played KISS songs. Somehow I still found employment later in life. As for Dynasty: Ace OWNS 2000 Man. Love it. Sure Know Something is one of those KISS songs that non-KISS fans always seem to like. And so do I. Charisma is a fun song that only Gene Simmons could write. Hard Times is an underappreciated gem. The only song I've really never cared for is Save Your Love. But wow! I had never known Dirty Livin' references Black Diamond, Mainline and Getaway. I learned something! The Tomorrow Show: Like you yourselves referenced, I've never ever felt that both Gene & Paul were pissed. Paul looks like he's having a great time, though he clearly is trying to placate Gene too. Also, Peter had a great comeback to an uptight Gene with the "You can be a monster but I can't be a gangster?" line. I've said it before and I'll say it again, a big plus for your show is you guys have a certain diplomatic and likable chemistry together.
As always, your kind words do not go unnoticed. We truly appreciate it. Glad someone else see the Tomorrow Show like I do. That whole thing is so overblown. Klassic interview for sure though. Until next episode.... JF
I couldn't agree more with your comment about Kiss no longer being dangerous. I think that while they were making tons of loot selling toys to the little kids, they were squandering their Hard Rock credibility and, man, did it come back to bite them! Right around this time, one of my school friends and I were talking about bands that we liked, and when I told him that I liked Kiss he said ",What?! You probably like Donny and Marie, too!". Man, that really stung! Lol!
That I was made for loving u bassline is underrated kinda strange Gene doesn’t like playing it we know he doesn’t like singing it lol but idk maybe he thought it was too busy on stage or something love how they’ve heavied it up and kept the tempo back recently (all due respect to Eric riparadise)
I know it's not Dynasty related but have you guys herd Crazy Lixx's version of Sword and Stone? Another fantastic episode as usual from the both of you. Hope you and your families have a good Christmas and New year.
EXACTLY. Didn't wanna throw him under the bus haha. He's totally to blame, and Gene and Paul, especially Paul, for not putting his foot down and demanding it. Take off Walls Come Down and put on S&S and I like the album WAY more.
I always thought that Paul should have had purple 💜 eyeshadow and Gene should have had blood ❤ dripping from his lips. That way there would have been consistency in regards to Ace and Peter's blue 💙 and green 💚
You wouldn't think that the troublemakers in the band would be the ones connecting Dynasty to their solo colors, but they did. Your idea would've been awesome!
Now tell it from Peter's side.. he said he messed up the tempo on purpose and was angry at finding out from Ace he was being paid less money and Paul was also angry he chose to go back to the Hotel and have his muscles massaged instead of doing radio interviews
Great an very interesting review again!👍🤘👍🤘

Yes all hail Anton! Yep, there's definitely a handful of songs that certainly don't sound like Peter!

Thank you so much. Will check that out!
Listening to Sword and Stone now. COMPLETELY SOLID. Totally dig it. Just makes me wonder even more why this song didn't make Crazy Nights. Ridiculous.

Yes, you're referring to Peter trashing his drums at the last show on the farewell tour. At least that's when Ace was getting paid more.
