This was June 6, 2022, accessed from the Mono Pass trailhead on HWY 120 (yes, I did mispronounce "Mono" -- it was very early!). Snow texture out there is probably getting to the upper end of viable, but do note all that incredible snow on Mount Lyell and the Lyell Glacier. As for the skiing, I was not on Kuna Peak, but rather a peak along the Kuna Crest which is sometimes called South Kuna. The actual Kuna Peak is about another mile in. Enjoy!
As usual you capture the true spirit of skiing . Adventure . Just the pure sound of your skis over the snow . Graceful turns . Love the segment of you drinking out of the frozen lake . So refreshing ! Your videos are the best .
Good to have you in the Sierra!
Ski on the wild side my Brother!
Thanks for sharing, Andy - and for finding this area after such a funky 2022 winter. I have looked at the Kuna Crest on maps for years. The entire little range is intriguing as it seems to be a series of peaks and cirques, and is apparently skirted by all the well-known trails. I suppose there is some real solitude to be found out there! With those peaks and cirques, it figures that there would be some sweet skiing as well. I might never make it out there, so thanks for taking us with you!
Always find you adventures entertaining and informative. Love your approach to scoping out adventures to see if they are likely to be successful
BTW beautifully color coordinated ski-binding-boot setup
Thank you for noticing! :)
Always interesting and informative thank you 🎿
Great stuff
loving the content andy!!
Awesome. Good job.
Awesome!
Just sayin', those ski and ski area reviews are ok, but this is what I tune in for, those big mountain hikes with the wide open expanses. Pure Gold, even in June!
Was wondering how do you route find? Do you use a gps, map and compass, or just seat of your pants dead reckoning?
When I see something interesting I usually take a picture of it, then go home and look at the area in Google Earth. I try to figure out access points (where to park), any existing trails, and I try to memorize anything that looks like trouble (ie, cliffs, creeks, brush). If it looks like a passable route exists, I mostly just show up and start hiking. In the past I was more focused on only going if I was sure I'd get to my destination, but lately I've been enjoying going just for the joy of being out there. It is a lot easier to sit on a sofa (or a chairlift) but I'm with you -- these days are the best!
Hi Andy. My local is Mountain High. Do you take anyone on hike n ski groups?
the short answer is I don't guide individuals or groups, but feel free to contact me via my site for more info
There's slalom. There's GS. Then there's Lewicky Slalom. You've been bombing around the sierras for a while now, is it just me or does that snowpack look too thin?
I keep telling people I'm ready for winter to start! The wet season pretty much ended at the start of Jan
