The smiling is called both nostalgia and also trying to hide the hurt. Which Cathy is supposed to be doing in this song. She is telling herself that it was meant to happen and she has to move on, even though she is "Still Hurting".
Rite I have had enough of people on RUclips. If one of you has broadway and national tour credits... or in fact ANY professional credits then fine but Im assuming you don't. She is NOT in the L5Y she is "portraying" a normal woman (not Kathy) singing a song about a break up. When performing a song out of context of the show you perform it in a way YOU connect with and you should always pander to the one person in the audience who may not have seen/know the show. Get over yourselves. Its great!
To the people that comment on this video. Shut up! Enjoy it for what it is and if you want to question her performance drop her an email. Or call up one of the many broadway producers she's worked with, BETTER YET! Get in touch with Jason Robert Brown who she's worked with alot and ask him what he thinks. Jesus!! I can see a lot of up an coming bitter amateur theatre directors cropping up here!
Obviously an amazing rendition even if it's not my favorite. Vocally she's amazing. And the way she's smiling is in that sort of angry/ridiculous way when you're so angry about something and it's so ridiculous that "jamie decided it's his to decide", the sort of bitterness which is feeling like you were completely left out of the decision, and yet you can't do a goddamn thing about it.
GOD FORBID she hits a note off-key. What a terrible offense. And if you took two seconds to actually look at what she's trying to convey instead of just comparing it to what you've already seen, you'd notice that there's no happiness behind those smiles. They're drenched in bitterness and sadness. She's not "putting on a show," those smiles are for a reason...
Um. NO. I have seen both the Original Cast and The revival, which was directed by JRB himself, and none of them play it like that. It is called she is on a cruse ship so she smiles.
I don't like this version. She dose not have the correct emotions behind it. She is smiling, when in the show Cathy's 5 year relationship just ended. Plus she has a pop sound. She also hit a note off key which really turns me off. I normally like Shoshana, but she let me down here...
Just incredible. Personally this is my favourite version of the song period. I love the original but for me this tops it.
I love that she's acting while she's singing...
shoshana is a gem. her voice is magical :)
It's like a masterclass!
Love her, love the song

People are aloud to voice their opinion
If you do theater then you have to expect people to be critical of it.
