I would ABSOLUTELY love to see BattleTech content from you. It's hard to find BattleTech content on yt that's engaging enough to keep my attention for longer than a couple of minutes.
putting my hat in the ring for this! Battletech has been around me for maybe as long as I know warhammer since in the hobbyshops that I frequently visited it was also played and I was always interested in it but slightly put off by the (seemingly) complex ruleset. So, Battletech How to play and maybe even painting guides? YES, PLEASE!
Heyyyyy I'm the guy talking to Randall in battletech. Also designer for the one player variant, Battletech Aces! Thanks for the shout out. Randall is literally the best.
I'm a business owner and a patreon of your channel. I understand the reality of what you want to do vs what you have to do and I'm not sure most people do so...I think it's great you're explaining it to us. You are a great honest humble humble and a treasure to the community. Good job guy...ill keep supporting you and spreading the word! :-)
Your battle reports are some of the very best on RUclips; I'm always excited when one comes out. The deathmatch was fun to watch and coincided with my introduction to the tabletop game. I'd be so stoked to see them again, even if far less frequent. I always cleaned house and got beverage/cleared my next half-hour whenever I saw one of those videos. The voice over, editing, narrating, and overall aesthetic quality is top notch.
I'm sorry you went through that, Guy. I felt that the video, for me at least, was exactly what you described as the intent. There's a certain fun of playing the bad guys when it's all fun-and-games, but when it is real history that impacted the lives and communities of people who are still alive today, it hits different. I think you're a champ, and we love you.
Dude, your bolt action video on tanks got me into the game! It never fails to surprise how thick headed and out of pocket people can be. Keep up the good content, we love it!
as a generic wargamer i'm going to quickly jump on the historical wargame shenanigans, i play as the germans in a wargame called "flames of war" now i quite honestly don't feel comfortable playing as them usually, but im in love with the unique german combat doctrine and the looks of the models, but i don't think it's justified to harrass a innocent... guy, its honestly disguisting what people are capable of and i feel really sorry for anyone who has fallen victim to all these... mindless individuals who think their actions don't have an effect on the people they harrass in real life! i really hope everything is going okay now since you're my idol! my whole warhammer carreer is thanks to you and i know this might sound weird, or look weird but im really thankful for opening my eyes to warhammer and everything else!
As someone who has developed "thick skin" against others opinions, as long as you don't let them influence you they hold no power, but if you enjoying playing as a frankly distilled version of the Wehrmacht that's fine as long as you recognise their actions for what they are. Nothing comes without cost, especially military innovations.
You should never feel uncomfortable about playing a faction in a historical wargame. The whole point is appreciation of and reenactment of history. If we shy away from history because it makes us uncomfortable than we move ever closer to inadvertently repeating it.
Anyone viewing historical factions through the lens of "good guys and bad guys" is genuinely insane imo. Reality isn't a hollywood movie, there has never been a "good" faction in any historical war.
It takes so little to spread rumors, and it takes so much to make it right in front of the public. If something, your attitude then and now proved you are a valid human being and I am so glad that you are still standing. Thank you for everything you do for us.
You’re an awesome bloke, Guy. I’m sorry to hear you had to deal with some mental stuff with regards to a video you put out. I genuinely think this is the best wargaming channel on RUclips. I think it’s a hugely positive place, and it’s helped me through some tough times. Thank you for everything you and the team do, and here’s to another 200+ episodes.
@@MidwinterMinis With all due respect Midwinter Minis, but you are just wrong on the issue - in that Bolt Action video you were incredibly patronizing and condescending. You created an ethical issue that wasn't there and essentially lambasted people who play Germans in a WW2 game (from a British manufacturer). It wasn't an open dialogue or an ethical issue, you knew exactly what you were doing when you made that video. It was by far one of the most tone-death videos from someone who's very well off, trying to lecture to people why playing the bad guys in a wargame is a bad idea. From a historian, I can only conclude you are completely unaware - there's nothing "sensitive" about it, it's only you trying to be an absolute killjoy. if you don't feel uncomfortable, don't play the game. It wasn't a sensitive topic, you were just bad about the whole thing.
All I can say is to hell with the people who feel the need to send death threats on social media. Some people need to seriously get a grip. Keep up the good work 👍👍
Guy I am so sorry you had to go through all of that... also as far as youtuber apologies go I'd say that is probably one of if not the best one ive seen lol take it easy and know we support you 100% (also my American self did get a little giddy when you picked up the gun even if it was just airsoft 😂)
Wow. What a rollercoaster. Well done being so transparent to your audience. Old time hobbyist here and relatively new to RUclips....love the channel. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much for giving Battletech a look in. I had the same backstory with the franchise as you until about 2 years ago, but then a friend convinced me to try the tabletop. Now im fully addicted and wishing more UK peeps played it!
Been following the channel for a couple years now and it's really interesting to get a behind the scenes look at the channel. Thank you for being so open and honest about everything these are tough subjects to talk about.
Hey Guy! First of all, happy to hear about all the good that has happened for you both, and I have to say, I'm Extremely excited for your Battletech content, can't wait to see either gameplay, or painting guides for the minis in your own style! Keep up the great work as always!
What amazing people to win the giveaway! Meant to be them for sure. Congratulations to them! Congrats on keeping the studio Guy, that must be a massive relief and I look forward to the Fund the Studio projects in the future!
Wow, that was going above and beyond delivering the land raider, but so great that such a huge fan got it. Love your content and videos so very happy that they'll keep coming. Very sorry to hear that you received such terrible treatment from some of the viewers of the historical gaming video, absolutely no excuse for such behaviour ever. Glad to hear you get to stay in your place for at least another couple of years. All the very best of wishes to everyone at MidWinter Minis.
I'm very excited for more Battletech content. With multiple great lore RUclipsrs with channels of all different sizes, having a larger one like yours bring the rules side out, in your style, sounds perfect!
Hey Guy, jumping in on that last part, the "historicals controversy": as a historical wargamer, I think you addressed valid points. Goonhammer last year put out a far more scathing article on the topic (which was similarly received, I guess), and the reality remains: some people in the Historical community don't want to hear anything even slightly critical of some aspects of their hobby. I can give tons of examples about this, so many I feel confident in saying it's one of the community's blindspots (namely, reading a mild critique/analysis and automatically jumping to the conclusion you're calling them nazis). It worries me that you think you "messed up" just because you got 50% split on likes/dislikes. That's not a fair metric. Whenever you put your opinions on a controversial topic, you'll get dislikes. If it ruffles some feathers, you'll get many dislikes! That's the reality of life whenever saying something that isn't bland and uncontroversial. Finally, I'm appalled that you got death threats. I knew about the speculations on your personal life, and that's none of anybody's business. But death threats? People are deranged.
Your second paragraph hits the nail on the head. Sadly, the life of a RUclipsr means making videos that are not just viewed but that have an excellent ‘like’ ratio. And as a consequence, RUclipsrs are incentivised to avoid topics that generate actual conversation or put out videos containing nothing but the most milquetoast opinions. I’m not advocating for Guy to ignore this fact and stir debate with potentially polarising takes because I appreciate that this is his living. But it irks me that the bargain that one must make is ‘keep your head down or be buried by morons’. Such an ecosystem will naturally tend toward blandness. Regardless, MWM is such a good channel that I have faith that Guy has the talent to succeed in navigating this puzzle with engaging content nevertheless. Anyway, good job telling the ball bags to eat it at the end btw Guy. Much love xxx
@@brettpid6416tell me how you didn't understand anything I wrote. Oh well, par for the course and a perfect example of what I wrote above, thanks for illustrating it.
He should stick to bland and uncontroversial as he obviously hasn't got the brains to have an adult debate. You can't make a video with a title and content like that, then a year later try to disown it (trend? lol!) and defend the idiotic sponsorship (real reason for the video). Just doesn't cut it. That debate has been had many times over by people far more erudite. The historical scene is already unduly looked down on, we don't need clumsy and daft attempts at weighing in on it like this. Stick to the silly entertainment videos. That's where this channel belongs.
Death threats are certainly wrong and uncalled for, but so was Guy's take on historicals. Guy flat out implied that players who like certain factions have Nazi sympathies. Decent people tend to get very irritated when you do that.
I'm excited to hear you'll be getting involved with Battletech. Having recently fallen down that rabbit hole myself, I look forward to painting help, it is very different painting mechs than my usual fantasy fare! Cheers.
We support you and your right to have opinions!!!! Toxic people will always be mad about something. Glad to hear that you feel comfortable talking about these topics.
I’ve been a long time fan, since the first video sandstone Necrons. Ultimately what I like best about the channel is your creativity and energy you put into each of your projects. You and your team take on a fun approach of “let’s try this and here’s how we are doing it.” If a game like Battletech will give you happiness and let you showcase something you are excited to share with us, I’m all for it. If GW is becoming unsustainable with price gouging kits and not offering any content creator packages, I for one wouldn’t mind you giving them a break. Keep it up Guy! You’ve got my like and sub

Its so nice to see a content creator be so honest and reflective. You and Hatty are doing amazing stuff, i hope you both keep up the amazing work! I thought your video on historical war games was thoughtfully delivered and put together. As you said, people who resort to physcial threats and personal attacks becuase they disagree with your statements about a game have no place in the community, or any community for that matter.
This was really good, certainly up for more update/chit chat videos. Props to you for covering the Bolt Action stuff. I was not massively impressed with the view the video seemed to portray given my love for historical wargaming. But it disgusts me that anyone would go so far with their anger as you described, what horrible people. Well done for keeping as calm as you did. Keep up the good work guys!
Battletech? Whooot! Battletech has been a staple in this hobby of ours for decades and has a solid fan base that carried the game through a couple of lean years. Catalyst has done a great job making Battletech more relevant than ever and the current models are fantastic. It would be great if you could cover Battletech on your channel - painting, how to play videos (Beginner Box, a Game of Armored Combat (core rules for "Classic battletech"), Alphastrike), lore videos (Battletech is so much more than just the miniature game, the novels rival the output of the Black Library and the universe is very well developed). Keep up the great work - awesome channel!
I remember a lot of the stuff people were saying after the Bolt Action video being well over the line, so it doesn't surprise me that the stuff people were messaging you and Hattie would be even worse (being cowards, of course they'd do it in private) but even so that's disgusting to hear. Something to remember when certain Historicals players insist it's only games like 40K that have a problem with toxic players.
I love this channel and all your videos and content! I can't imagine the stress you'd feel with threats to your person or family. I'm sorry to hear that anyone who watches your videos would do such things. I thought that video was handled quite impartially. I can't wait to see new battle reports out of your channel. RE: "the problem with historical wargames" video response - I think it's okay to say you're not comfortable with playing a certain faction that is playable for less than 13 years of tens of thousands of years of human history, a lot of people are not comfortable with that time period for many reasons and I would never fault anyone for not being interested in that particular period of history. I think it was a pretty big stretch to claim thats the fundamental problem with *all* historical wargames, including ancient and medieval wargames, is due to one faction, and I think a lot of the negative comments were probably focused on the title, the content, and the sponsorship being "out of sync" with each other and with the fundamental premise (N*zi's = bad, therefore all historical wargames are bad). I think the reason why historical wargames isn't as popular is because there are a lot of history nerds in the communities, who take pride in their knowledge, but at the detriment of creative decisions (like paint schemes, decal usage, among other things). I wouldn't go so far to say it's intentional gatekeeping, but it's certainly a downer to be told that your hard-work and effort with an assembled and painted Roman army "isn't historically accurate" for whatever reason. If it wasn't about historical accuracy, there'd be comments about how certain battles were supposed to go, or which army had better strategy, etc. , which is hard for anyone new to a game to keep up with without being a history nerd too. It's hard to break into certain historical wargaming groups because of that mentality, which comes across as purist or almost elitist. In Warhammer, you can paint whatever you want and however you want, as long as you're respecting lore, but even then, MOST people aren't going to chew you out for the wrong decals or paint schemes.
Hey Guy, I absolutely love watching your videos. And I am absolutely not in war-gaming or this kind of hobbying nor will I ever be, haha. I just love the good vibes, the nerdy geekiness, the incredible creativity, the smooth editing and you guys' general tremendous positivity. Feels like a warm bath. That said, I am very sorry to hear you had to go through all that bad shit. Some people just don't seem to understand there are real life people on the other end of their mindless threats. A few really stinky rotten eggs. The vast majority of us are really nice! Sending you love.
The landraider story really made me smile. I'm happy it was able to create what looked like some really fond memories for you and everyone involved. The beauty of nerdy hobbies in plain sight. Additionally, something about the Deathmatch situation, it's really fair to say you got rugpulled by GW (as they all too often do with the content creators who's hard work and content they really benefit from. I don't understand their reasoning around this) and I'm pretty sure your entire audience more than understand it, and primarilly just want you to find a format that works financially for the channel. You running a profitable sustainable business is how we get more Midwinter, so at the end of the day, we'll always side with you.
The Start Collecting Deathmatch plans sound great to me! Those videos are some of my all time favorites on the channel, but it's not specifically because of the Start Collecting sets, it's because the small scale battles are easier to grasp and your battle reports are BY FAR the best on youtube
Great video! Thank you for the honesty and vulnerability man. It’s no mean feat to put it all out there like you did. You still have my support. Keep doing you my dude!

@@MidwinterMinis I hope you go for house Steiner !! :D , and im honestly excited to see how you paint it. Curious on your take :)
You cannot believe how excited i am that you cover Battletech. Its been in my life for like 35 years and seeing it getting a bit more traction is great. I also want to mention, that if the Classic Battletech rules are too dense (there is a LOT which can be optional), the Alpha Strike rules can help. Its more similar to Warhammer as it doesnt use a hex grid (but you can) and the unit stats are easier to understand and grasp. Maybe try out both and i really hope you paint up some Battlemechs on the channel, there are so different factions and liveries they use, its a deep hole to get into :)
Your videos are always a pleasure to watch, I don't agree with you on everything, but I am very sorry to hear people threatened you, that's completely unhinged.

Great video Guy. I have been a really long time subscriber and your Blackstone Fortress videos way back got me into my favourite standalone tabletop game. The Bolt Action video was a learning experience I suppose, but it was clear that a large portion of people used that to further prop up their assumptions of you and your character after a very personal situation. (My partner left last year, I stayed with the kids so I know how sensitive this situation is). Anyway, keep on doing what you do. It is clearly working as you are on your way to 40(0)K!
What I don't understand is like, what the fuck were people thinking with sending threats? Like what does that prove? It says way more about people who sent shit like that over the idea of someone saying "hey it may not be morally comfortable for everyone to play with/against the german faction" then it does about you making an observation. Chin up king, you are a cool dad and your kids are very lucky to have you around
IDK if its a new or old problem, but I think some people have no personal identity so they wrap the thing consume around them (IE sports, star wars, 40k, etc...). So any criticism of the thing they like is an attack on them.
Oh man, I missed the drama! I'm sorry to hear you and the team had to go through all that! Thankfully nobody was hurt, that's the important thing. I 100% agree.. this community is amazing, and there is so much positivity.. it's sad to think that there is a darker side to it, and being the face of the community, you've had to bear the brunt of it. I look forward to more content, always enjoy your videos... can't say I'm your #1 or #2 biggest fan.. but i'm 100% a huge fan of your content!
I remember being so annoyed the comments on the bolt action video. It felt like people where just bandwagoning and didn't even listen to what you said. You pointed out a thing, that can create discomfort in the real world. It was very clear you didn't think that it was necessarily wrong to use that imagery in a historical war game. It is scary that there are so many adults who can so easily end up giving death threats for something so innocent. It both speaks to both how vile but also how lazy they are that they couldn't even listen to and understand the video before sending such venom to you.

I would ABSOLUTELY love to see BattleTech content from you. It's hard to find BattleTech content on yt that's engaging enough to keep my attention for longer than a couple of minutes.
Yeah, that's the problem I used to have with 40k battle reports back in the day too. The landscape has seriously improved since then!
A big fat yes please to this!
I don't even play Battletech, and I want to see your Battletech content!!
putting my hat in the ring for this! Battletech has been around me for maybe as long as I know warhammer since in the hobbyshops that I frequently visited it was also played and I was always interested in it but slightly put off by the (seemingly) complex ruleset. So, Battletech How to play and maybe even painting guides? YES, PLEASE!
Right!?!
Heyyyyy I'm the guy talking to Randall in battletech. Also designer for the one player variant, Battletech Aces! Thanks for the shout out. Randall is literally the best.
That's awesome! I checked out your channel while I was looking for any clips of Randall and your videos are great! :)
Excited for Aces to come to print!
That Catalyst rep sounded very handsome. Any other Battletech stuff let me know 😂.

Thanks so much! That's really awesome to hear. Excited to get them going again :)
Totally! Can't wait for more!!
Truth.
That's really lovely, thanks mate. Honestly though I'm not worthy of being an idol! I'm just a very average nerd with a camera, haha
As someone who has developed "thick skin" against others opinions, as long as you don't let them influence you they hold no power, but if you enjoying playing as a frankly distilled version of the Wehrmacht that's fine as long as you recognise their actions for what they are. Nothing comes without cost, especially military innovations.
@@MidwinterMinis im sorry for the late reaction but honestly you deserve it!
Thanks matey!
Thanks so much mate! That's very kind :)
It was a beyond unfair response from the community and honestly pretty shocking.
I'm incredibly excited for the prospect of future Battletech content on the channel, I can't wait! I hope ya'll find great success on that front.
Haha, thanks mate! Appreciate it :)

Thanks so much, my friend! It was a tough ol' time, but we're still standing! :)
I'm very excited for more Battletech content. With multiple great lore RUclipsrs with channels of all different sizes, having a larger one like yours bring the rules side out, in your style, sounds perfect!
Yeah! I'm getting more and more excited with every comment saying they're looking forward to it :)
No fucking way, I used to drive past Home&Eat all the time when I lived in Bishop's Stortford!! Always looked like an enigma lol
It very much is an enigma! Haha
Also, keep in mind, if people hate it, they share it, bumping up that dislike, as opposed with just liking it, which may or may not get shares.

Just dropping a comment to say I like your painting videos a lot, your tutorials have always been good and inspiring :)
I’ve been a long time fan, since the first video sandstone Necrons. Ultimately what I like best about the channel is your creativity and energy you put into each of your projects. You and your team take on a fun approach of “let’s try this and here’s how we are doing it.”
If a game like Battletech will give you happiness and let you showcase something you are excited to share with us, I’m all for it.

Battletech?
Yeah, exactly. Unfortunately there's bad eggs in every hobby, but as we're so visible we obviously make pretty good targets!
Keep up the great and inspiring work everyone! That segment on the land raider was priceless, congrats to the amazing family.

I know right? I was half tempted until I saw the prices!
The world needs more Battletech painting videos.

Maybe give slight priority to the minis from the start collecting in the 500 point deathmatch
Yeah! Definitely a good idea to use them as a base for the rest of the force, I think :)
The Start Collecting Deathmatch plans sound great to me! Those videos are some of my all time favorites on the channel, but it's not specifically because of the Start Collecting sets, it's because the small scale battles are easier to grasp and your battle reports are BY FAR the best on youtube

@@MidwinterMinis I hope you go for house Steiner !! :D , and im honestly excited to see how you paint it. Im used to painting adeptus titanicus scale models and it was new experience to paint battletech models, felt quite different from what im used to, so i went with basic layering and drybrushing techniques.

That's really kind, thank you. Hope you're doing well, friend!
@@MidwinterMinis yeah it's all good ta. Life moves on and you just evolve with it!
Hollyland makes decent stuff. I know them mostly for their headsets, so it's cool to see they make teeny mics like that.
I've been pleasantly surprised! I hadn't even heard of them before last week.
I've been using their older Lark 150 for a while and love it
Love your channel Guy, this video was so real and wholesome. Fingers crossed for being able to get your paint here in Canada too!! ❤😊
Thankfully people like that are just a very vocal minority. Honestly I think most people are pretty chill and very reasonable! :)
500 point death match sounds amazing!! Definitely looking forward to seeing whatever format you decide to go with I'm here for all of it!!
Keep up the good work Guy. Your channel is one of the things that inspires me to continue my tabletop hobby journey and I recently got copy of Heroquest so ill be using your speedpaint videos to help me soon! As someone having to deal with trauma myself, I'm sorry you had to deal with all those comments. You don't deserve it at all! Love the channel always ❤
Thanks matey! Hope you enjoy the HeroQuest videos, and hope you're doing okay!
