Some of the hobby community is truly vile in how they get really nasty/aggressive/threatening at people , especially over games ultimately ..
I think its probably safe to just avoid any form of spicy takes , unless its purely satire / comedic spin ... too many people just have no ability to think rationally over things, or just go . hey I disagree with this person take on xyz and avoid it . / ignore it / pass ..

I would really like to see death matches in other systems tbh, like short Battletech matches would be fun
I’ve started playing One Page Rules at the smaller points values were you end up with 4-6 units and it’s been a lot more interesting and requires more skill.
Also, we got two/three games in the same time it usually took for one of 40K.
I will wait guy, but one day I will get my hands on that primer, and the world will tremble.

You clearly brought up points that newer players might not recognize about if they want to get their group into BA or other historical games and didn't seem to be passing judgment either way to me. The fact that people can look at a video like that and have the reaction they did is horrible to me. I completely agree that the behavior shown in the comments of that video has no business anywhere but I commend you for waiting until you were in a headspace to not lash back to address it. Love all your videos and can't wait until the deathmatch series starts up again whatever form it takes.
I would ABSOLUTELY love to see BattleTech content from you. It's hard to find BattleTech content on yt that's engaging enough to keep my attention for longer than a couple of minutes.

Battletech has been around me for maybe as long as I know warhammer since in the hobbyshops that I frequently visited it was also played and I was always interested in it but slightly put off by the (seemingly) complex ruleset. So, Battletech How to play and maybe even painting guides? YES, PLEASE!

I'm sorry you went through that, Guy. I felt that the video, for me at least, was exactly what you described as the intent. There's a certain fun of playing the bad guys when it's all fun-and-games, but when it is real history that impacted the lives and communities of people who are still alive today, it hits different.

as a generic wargamer i'm going to quickly jump on the historical wargame shenanigans, i play as the germans in a wargame called "flames of war" now i quite honestly don't feel comfortable playing as them usually, but im in love with the unique german combat doctrine and the looks of the models, but i don't think it's justified to harrass a innocent... guy, its honestly disguisting what people are capable of and i feel really sorry for anyone who has fallen victim to all these... mindless individuals who think their actions don't have an effect on the people they harrass in real life! i really hope everything is going okay now since you're my idol! my whole warhammer carreer is thanks to you and i know this might sound weird, or look weird but im really thankful for opening my eyes to warhammer and everything else!

As someone who has developed "thick skin" against others opinions, as long as you don't let them influence you they hold no power, but if you enjoying playing as a frankly distilled version of the Wehrmacht that's fine as long as you recognise their actions for what they are. Nothing comes without cost, especially military innovations.

The arena might need a bit of variation to. Only to prevent the classic "I don't move and shoot", "Same". Repeat next turn and next game. Not big changes, just some covers or even specials rules.

Your battle reports are some of the very best on RUclips; I'm always excited when one comes out. The deathmatch was fun to watch and coincided with my introduction to the tabletop game. I'd be so stoked to see them again, even if far less frequent. I always cleaned house and got beverage/cleared my next half-hour whenever I saw one of those videos. The voice over, editing, narrating, and overall aesthetic quality is top notch.

Hey Guy, jumping in on that last part, the "historicals controversy": as a historical wargamer, I think you addressed valid points. Goonhammer last year put out a far more scathing article on the topic (which was similarly received, I guess), and the reality remains: some people in the Historical community don't want to hear anything even slightly critical of some aspects of their hobby. I can give tons of examples about this, so many I feel confident in saying it's one of the community's blindspots (namely, reading a mild critique/analysis and automatically jumping to the conclusion you're calling them nazis).
It worries me that you think you "messed up" just because you got 50% split on likes/dislikes. That's not a fair metric. Whenever you put your opinions on a controversial topic, you'll get dislikes. If it ruffles some feathers, you'll get many dislikes! That's the reality of life whenever saying something that isn't bland and uncontroversial.
Finally, I'm appalled that you got death threats. I knew about the speculations on your personal life, and that's none of anybody's business. But death threats? People are deranged.
Your second paragraph hits the nail on the head.
Sadly, the life of a RUclipsr means making videos that are not just viewed but that have an excellent ‘like’ ratio. And as a consequence, RUclipsrs are incentivised to avoid topics that generate actual conversation or put out videos containing nothing but the most milquetoast opinions.
I’m not advocating for Guy to ignore this fact and stir debate with potentially polarising takes because I appreciate that this is his living. But it irks me that the bargain that one must make is ‘keep your head down or be buried by morons’. Such an ecosystem will naturally tend toward blandness.
Regardless, MWM is such a good channel that I have faith that Guy has the talent to succeed in navigating this puzzle with engaging content nevertheless.

Also, keep in mind, if people hate it, they share it, bumping up that dislike, as opposed with just liking it, which may or may not get shares.

He should stick to bland and uncontroversial as he obviously hasn't got the brains to have an adult debate. You can't make a video with a title and content like that, then a year later try to disown it (trend? lol!) and defend the idiotic sponsorship (real reason for the video). Just doesn't cut it. That debate has been had many times over by people far more erudite. The historical scene is already unduly looked down on, we don't need clumsy and daft attempts at weighing in on it like this. Stick to the silly entertainment videos. That's where this channel belongs.

I remember a lot of the stuff people were saying after the Bolt Action video being well over the line, so it doesn't surprise me that the stuff people were messaging you and Hattie would be even worse (being cowards, of course they'd do it in private) but even so that's disgusting to hear. Something to remember when certain Historicals players insist it's only games like 40K that have a problem with toxic players.

Can’t fathom why anyone was offended by the bolt action video, I’ve watched it a couple of times (I like tanks) and it never crossed my mind that some people might be offended.
Bizarre times we live in eh? If they were aggravated enough to threaten you then they are the parts of historical communities that you didn’t even talk about or basement dwelling keyboard warriors.
My parents used to do a lot of historical reenactment shows and let’s just say I didn’t meet anyone who enjoyed dressing up as a Nazi for the weekend as super “normal”, not all bad of course but there’s a oddness to it for sure.

The way catalyst treats their customers is why i went ham on their most recent battletech kickstarter. It's night and day from how GW treats customers (victims).
The rules for battletech are, while dense, extremely well written and intuitive so its eay easier to learn than the convoluted slop GW puts out.

This was really good, certainly up for more update/chit chat videos. Props to you for covering the Bolt Action stuff. I was not massively impressed with the view the video seemed to portray given my love for historical wargaming. @@brettpid6416 No, horrible comments like death threats and accusing Midwinter Minis of some heinous stuff involving his family. Whilst I personally didn’t agree with his Bolt Action opinions, I think it’s easy to see that a lot of people took it way too far.
As a historical wargamer - there was nothing harmful, hateful or offensive about your video on historical wargaming. I thought it was a good take, and a thoughtful take on the subject. People want to be offended. People want to be upset and point fingers and cast blame over anything that doesn't 100% agree with something they like - and they are the sort to brigade someone or something online to make themselves feel superior. Also as a historical wargamer, I often find the people most offended are those willing to be the most offensive. I'm sorry anyone in the hobby made you feel threatened. You did good. To hell with the haters.

Well Guy, I personally appreciate you bringing up the topic and discussing it. To me, getting upset over historical based wargames is incredibly ignorant. It seems to me that these people want to “erase” history or whatever. But I think as a society we need to acknowledge history, it’s good AND bad. Humanity is not perfect and it never will be. There are vile aspects of life and humanity and to ignore them destines them to be repeated. I think talking about them and understanding them is very important overall. So I appreciate you discussing it. Keep up the great work, you’re one of my favorite hobby RUclipsrs out there and your “learn to paint Warhammer” got me into Warhammer. So thank you.

Battletech? Whooot! Battletech has been a staple in this hobby of ours for decades and has a solid fan base that carried the game through a couple of lean years. Catalyst has done a great job making Battletech more relevant than ever and the current models are fantastic. It would be great if you could cover Battletech on your channel - painting, how to play videos (Beginner Box, a Game of Armored Combat (core rules for "Classic battletech"), Alphastrike), lore videos (Battletech is so much more than just the miniature game, the novels rival the output of the Black Library and the universe is very well developed).

I’ve been a long time fan, since the first video sandstone Necrons. Ultimately what I like best about the channel is your creativity and energy you put into each of your projects. You and your team take on a fun approach of “let’s try this and here’s how we are doing it.”
If a game like Battletech will give you happiness and let you showcase something you are excited to share with us, I’m all for it.
If GW is becoming unsustainable with price gouging kits and not offering any content creator packages, I for one wouldn’t mind you giving them a break.

I started watching your channel on my first account when I first watched you introduction to painting video, which helped me paint my first Warhammer minis, and while I admit that I didn’t overly agree with what you said in that Bolt Action video, I never gave it a second thought after the video and kept watching your content. If anything, you actually introduced me to Bolt Action with that video! I’m now sitting with a 1000 points American and 1000 points of Germans and I’m actually really glad to have started exploring outside the GWverse.
While my Americans are based more on the boys in the movie Bridge over Ramegan, I went with the pretty blue uniforms of the German Luftwaffe field teams for the others. If you ever touch back into Bolt Action again, I’d love to see your take on that as well.
Of course, I’ve been working on some Finns as well, which is a great way to kitbash German and Russian stuff together to make your own unique army.
Anyway, thanks again for getting me into this hobby!

Great video Guy. I have been a really long time subscriber and your Blackstone Fortress videos way back got me into my favourite standalone tabletop game. The Bolt Action video was a learning experience I suppose, but it was clear that a large portion of people used that to further prop up their assumptions of you and your character after a very personal situation. (My partner left last year, I stayed with the kids so I know how sensitive this situation is).
Anyway, keep on doing what you do. It is clearly working as you are on your way to 40(0)K!

Hey Guy, I absolutely love watching your videos. And I am absolutely not in war-gaming or this kind of hobbying nor will I ever be, haha. I just love the good vibes, the nerdy geekiness, the incredible creativity, the smooth editing and you guys' general tremendous positivity. Feels like a warm bath.

Hi when me and my friend were playing warhammer he told me that you abandoned your children for warhammer because warhammer is just that addictive and I told him no that's not true and without even thinking I grabbed his neck and started squeezing and when i let go he ran out of the building and left his miniatures and then the police showed up at my house and i had to spend some time away to relax and think about what i have done and now my friend does not play warhammer with me anymore
People online are the worst. Do not apologize to them or they will want more. Keep up the good videos. Tribalism is out of hand. Great video

I thought your video on historical war games was thoughtfully delivered and put together. As you said, people who resort to physcial threats and personal attacks becuase they disagree with your statements about a game have no place in the community, or any community for that matter.
Sorry to hear about all the garbage you had to deal with over Bolt Action. I want to say it's unbelievable, but it's sadly not. At least it didn't ruin the best hobby RUclips channel or the best hobby RUclipsr!

honestly, the reaction to that bolt action video was completely out of wack. all you said was "hey some people might shy away from historical wargaming because someone has to play the nazis and that's uncomfortable for some people, and also there are right wingers in wargaming circles. but im not judging you if you like the gear or tanks, here, let me paint the panzer so everyone knows i mean what im saying" then the exact right wingers you were talking about came out of the woodwork to threaten your life. absolutely ridiculous behavior over a plastic tank and im glad you're ok
Thanks mate! That was certainly my take on the whole situation for a while, but I've spoken to lots of lovely, very reasonable people who also had a problem with that video, so maybe I just worded my point terribly. Either way, this should hopefully clear things up :)
I am a long time lurker on this channel. I subscribed before I bought my first mini. I now own 3 army’s across 2 games painted how you taught me. I am sorry there are people who would say those things to you. Thank you for inspiring me and my wife to pick up this hobby. It’s been a blessing for us during a very hard time.
The Start Collecting Deathmatch plans sound great to me! Those videos are some of my all time favorites on the channel, but it's not specifically because of the Start Collecting sets, it's because the small scale battles are easier to grasp and your battle reports are BY FAR the best on youtube

I remember being so annoyed the comments on the bolt action video. It felt like people where just bandwagoning and didn't even listen to what you said. You pointed out a thing, that can create discomfort in the real world. It was very clear you didn't think that it was necessarily wrong to use that imagery in a historical war game. It is scary that there are so many adults who can so easily end up giving death threats for something so innocent. It both speaks to both how vile but also how lazy they are that they couldn't even listen to and understand the video before sending such venom to you.
Thankfully people like that are just a very vocal minority. Honestly I think most people are pretty chill and very reasonable! :)

Guy, for as long as I've watched your channel, you've never been anything but respectful and your honesty is brilliant. The fact that you trust your viewers and feel able to come out and talk about this stuff shows how tight knit the hobbying community is. People do not like being confronted about issues in there chosen hobbies. they would rather remain ignorant
Lets be honest Wargaming ESPEICALLY historical wargaming of the ww2 period has a massive issue with well extreme groups
To the point there is no historical context, there is just worship.
Even 40k has small but vocal well extreme right group
Some people are ofc wary when going into said hobbies because of them and sadly many people remain Ignorant to this and so when these issues are brought up people get defensive
If you mention how Women have issues getting into the hobby due to sexism, you WILL get people complain and shouting "Women ruin its ,it a mans hobby"
At the end of the day THAT is the biggest gate-keeper, Its the ignorance, the defensiveness the un-openness to others it in fact ALLOWs for the more extreme group to feel at home because they know even people who would disagree with them would blindly defend them unknowingly
Oh wow having folks stop by place you are living to possibly buy would be a stressful experience. Glad you got a two year lease to take pressure off and give you time to plan.
