The ending your professor wanted made it a student film. The ending you wanted made it art.
I'm happy you didn't let your class get in the way of what you wanted to make, they just didn't understand the message.

I think the reaction to Can't Food from your peers is reflective to pieces exploring the meta, let alone utilizing it for the overall message. Meta as a whole is a finicky thing; some either understand it deeply or not at all, which could've factored for their reaction. Not saying I didn't like Can't Food; I loved it.
But seriously, who calls police over a short film?

    • @inspectorjavert9868

People who are paranoid I honestly think it was because of the gun and well the electrocution scene. This to some people, people mind you who are probably brainwashed or anti-social to the media can perceive this as OMG ANOTHER COLUMBINE mainly because thats whats been shoved in our faces over and over again.

    • @staringgasmask
      @staringgasmask 4 года назад +5

@@inspectorjavert9868 well, the gun didn't kill anyone (presumably) on the last ending. Just the electric chair that was more like a brain washing chair. But the first ending featured a third cat killing the other cat who just tried to recover the food (in the final ending he turned into an antagonist, but in the first ending there is no proof), then merciless executing the 2D cat, murdering both with a deadly accurate shot in the head. All of this fully displayed on screen and without any censor. If someone gets mad because they see a gun, imo they'd get madder if they saw the characters being murdered without mercy using that gun. The last ending featured blood-crying eyes, which was meant to simulate how 3D sucks life from the cat, and the "electric chair" that took the soul off the animation and transformed it into another of many 3D animations. This work has a deep message, and Jonochrome has made it understandable and set his situation in a really interesting way. Also it's one of the best 2D+3D short animations in RUclips, hands down. Movements aren't forced and frames are perfect. Quite similar to some kind of tom&jerry cartoon

I really liked can't food...? Is that bad? It literally speaks upon "going into the unknown" discovering what you arguably don't want to, what you want but you don't want, the symbolism is extremely strong but it doesn't hold it back, the grass ISN'T always greener on the other side, agreeing to disagree, Poor Mr. Cat was presented with a situation and logically thought a way out of it, no matter how ridiculous he came to the conclusion he still came to one! Even if he wasn't ready for the conversation he recognized his true emotions and didn't hold himself back instead of just accepting or settling for whats in front of him, and its arguably his nonacceptance that lead him to the situation he was in, but he didn't give up or accept what was coming, its honestly a really strong message

The animation was impactful in a way that should've been respected by your professors, the school, and your fellow students. The issue with the new ending wasn't that it made someone uncomfortable, it made them think. which in itself isn't even an issue. Many people in art school expect a level of mediocrity and not something that cut's through the bullshit and makes a statement. The fact that it made someone "uncomfortable" means that it was worth something. It left an impact on them that made them think about something they normally wouldn't which in my opinion is the point of art. It wasn't a threat, it wasn't some kind of violent act of hatred, it was a unique point of view. Thank you for making this and for sticking to your morals. Wish you the best of luck in whatever endeavor you choose.

Can't Food is one of the best Animations I've seen all decade. - no joke.
The transition between ending up as nothing - the hinting at your own work sort of erasing itself, a speech bubble, etc.
and then the transition into deadpan maturity.
It's not just good because it's good on it's own, it's good because it's ending is a note of mercy and trust during a time where the entire world is embroidered in conflicts based on lack of trust - hell you put it on youtube, one of the least trusted but most used mediums in the world - in some way, I think that makes it even more meaningful: that it's an ending that got censored somewhat makes it even that much more punchy to me: like you put your soul out and was rejected for it - which is tragic, but otherwise beautiful in it's own way.
Every single aspect of Can't Food is art - the lead up to the animation, the process for it, and the aftermath, this introspection and re-telling of the events around it.
I'm actually so tired of slapstick cartoons that don't consider consequences or maturity. Can't food has a few funny moments, sure, but it tells a really serious story using a really silly medium and that just isn't very easy to do as well as you've done.
I wish I could slap your lecturer in the face for his reaction, and I wish I could do the same to your school. Can't Food deserves the highest score a project like it can get.

  • @mash5a

I saw this video first and I'll be honest, I'm not sure if I would have gotten the personal subtext. The 2d vs 3d stuff seemed pretty clear but I could easily see myself getting caught up on the story of the "characters" on my first viewing. I guess what I'm trying to say is that transgressive art can be difficult for people to "get" on the first sitting, depending on what their reactions are.
That said, I loved the short. Good luck in the new decade!

  • @DoctorDisasterDracula

I find it odd people were put off by Can't Food. I mean the 3D Cat lingering with the gun was unsettling but I pictured it had some sort of meaning to it.
What I ultimately took from this was a look at both 2D and 3D art. 2D is simpler look, but the expressions can exaggerated greatly and you can alter the model how you see fit.
With 3D, it looks complex, but is actually simple, yet very restrictive. You need to work around the model more, not just with lighting, but even altering my model slightly can make things look... kind of off.
And the last bit, seemed to me you simply aren't interested in doing or seeing 3D animation. You don't necessarily hate it, you're just not very into as much as others are, and would rather let things end as peacefully as possible. Yet that 3D cat just won't seem to go away. It's scared to leave, because it doesn't want its food stolen again. It doesn't want 2D to thrive over it.

So, typically when a college or university police get involved is when a student reports something to a teacher where, typically, the teacher has to report it to the higher ups. The higher ups, will take any measures they need (it varies between colleges and universities) which could also include law enforcement or a simple email to the student to seek a concealer. I, myself, have gotten an email and a call from a counselor because of a domestic dispute that was already taken care of by the police which is where I've learned all of this. The police might have gotten involved because he graduated the next day and was no longer an enrolled student, but if there's a lesson to this paragraph it's that: even if it's something small, like people showing concern about someone to a project or feeling uncomfortable because of it, the schools will treat all matters seriously and just want to cover all bases to ensure that everything is well and good. :)

Can’t Food is an amazing animation, and honestly I would have loved being you and hearing I made everyone uncomfortable for the fact that I know that they felt something different, something that I would have felt in that situation, or even those years. Edit: To me, the most important part is near the very end, when 2D kitty stops...and talks to the 3D kitty...as mature individuals and just speaking from the heart, and that reflects into the development of that video, at first having a comedic “ha ha funny joke is funny” (which actually was clever btw), but instead to have a completely different message, a message that felt it came out more from the heart...thank you for that...there is not enough of us in this world whom are willing to open their hearts into what they do...that’s how I feel anyways...whether this gets a response or not doesn’t matter, the fact that I can put my feelings out like this truly is what matters to me...

Yeah, I think I get how you feel.
I'm like 24, and I didn't get my first job until a few months ago, and it's just a retail job lol (It ain't all that bad actually, just a joke).
Prior to that, I never really made my own money. I just kept getting free stuff all the time, and it made me feel ULTRA guilty. This was the case because my mom said that I should devote ALL of my time into academics, and not even THINK about doing some low-end job on the side. Every time I thought about applying for a part-time job, she was very disapproving. I know she had good intentions, but I think this hella stunted my growth on a social level, and made my general adulting skills quite below par. I'm way better off now that I have a job; I've met all kinds of people, and have already dealt with many crappy situations (though this is true for any kind of job though lol), and, personally, I feel like have GREATLY improved as a person in these short few months.
And best of all, I feel a lot more independent.
Also, man oh man, I really know that perfectionist feeling; it's caused a lot of trouble for me over the years. It's influenced how I create art/animations, how I make music, nearly all my life decisions (for better or for worse), etc. It's caused me to obsess over the smallest details, it's made me do nearly everything at a snail's pace. Hell, it's even affecting how I'm making this comment, RIGHT NOW lol! It's only been in recent years, that I've been slowly weaning off the perfectionism. I've been forcing myself to draw more unpolished doodles, and found myself adapting to a relatively simplistic art style to get things done quicker (luckily, I love this style). My life has become a lot more relaxed because of this.
But still, I don't want to completely discard my perfectionism. Because even though it's a curse, I still think it's also a blessing.
I say there's a balance between perfection and imperfection.
Sorry for the large block of text lol, I just really empathize with your feelings in this video.
Have a Happy New Year! And good luck with any future endeavors!
    PS:
My name is also Jonathan, so the empathy is even LARGER for me lol.
    Us Jonathans gotta stick together!

Please don't feel like you have high expectations on the things you create, just continue being passionate in the things you do and continue with your goals on self-improvement and it will cause you to become an even better content creator. A lot of the things you said really taught me some things about myself as well in fact, so thank you for the podcast/update video/talk thing! lol

'Can't Food' came up randomly in my RUclips recommendations but it got me here because I wanted to know more about it. You said in the video that you were opposed to 3D animation, which reminded me of Sylvain Chomet's 2003 animation 'Les Triplettes de Belleville', which I can't recommend enough if you've never seen it before. Chomet trained as a traditional 2D animator influenced by the likes of Disney, but saw the rise of 3D animation as destructive to the animation industry, taking away from individualism and tradition, swapping out rough edges and fine details for blocky shapes and smooth curves. There's a brilliant sequence later in the film where the main characters are escaping the mafia on a bicycle-powered 2D vehicle while being pursued by henchmen in 3D animated Citroen 2CVs, which are constantly breaking, exploding and falling apart. I wrote my final dissertation report at university on Chomet, so I love getting to talk about his films.
Hope whatever comes next for you works out and you can keep making projects like Can't Food. Best of luck! :)

One of the greatest things about art is that it CAN make you uncomfortable.
Shame on anyone who doesn't understand how wonderful of a thing that is.

This reminds me of something that happened back in highschool. Some civics class. We were supposed to write a (hypothetical) bill for the state's law. I wrote an amendment that would patch what I saw as a flaw in the law related to age of consent, in that parts of it were specifically written for male perpetrators and female victims. The teachers took me aside, said "this is going to make everyone uncomfortable", and gave me a cookie-cutter assignment that I didn't care about. Something about legalizing horse racing or something dumb like that, I forget.

fear has two kind. survival, and moral.
many films use survival fear, and as you realize it's a film it fades away.
what you did is moral fear, and that one leaves you thinking.
after they saw it they likely where terrified. not for there survival. but for there moral.

personally I am a programmer and me coding my own personal way caused people around me in the scripting community to say its bad and such etc despite it being a creative freedom
whenever there is someone saying that there is a "right way" to do something in a creative art it defeats the entire purpose of it being a creative career/hobby
Just go with what you want to do and you will most likely succeed

I do like 3D animation and design and gotta admit that for a very brief moment I was like "is this cartoon just about how 2D is without any question better than 3D animation?" but then I started to remember that I havent seen a pixar-disney-illumination-dreamworks whatever movie in years because they are just so sameish and commercial. And the message I got changed, that animated films became more focused on making products than art.
But hearing your experience in college really gave your cartoon a different perspective, like the desire to not fit in an industry were they demand people to work and make things in a really specific way. Being pushed to make things in a way that you are not particularly interested nor prominent can be really discouraging.
I dont believe that any of your classmates felt unconfortable nor think that your project guaranted a psychological profiling session with the campus police, I dont know what your professor got from it but if he preferred a funny haha the cartoon cat got shot in the head joke over the ending that has something to say, well thats just pretty bizarre.
Your projects look great and I hope you have great success in the future.
