      Said by someone who’s never served and doesn’t have to put their life in the hands of a weaker gender.

    I served as a master helmsman onboard the first Aegis Cruiser the USS Ticonderoga CG47. 1984-88
    It’s a great feeling to accomplish a role of such importance

      Hi! This is a strange request but I'm working on a project about nuclear submarines in the 80s and I'm wondering, would you be willing to talk? I would love to hear about your experience to help give me project authenticity and heart. Also, I listened to some of your poetry which I though was really beautiful.

    I was the first qualified master helmsman on the USS Nimitz back in 75. She was my responsibility leaving and entering ports, coming alongside during unreps and anchorages. Maintained 1/4 degree course headings and had total confidence of the CO, XO, and commanders that did con orders during unreps. They would stop at the helm and ask me how she was handling, and knew me as Perk

  • @gregperkins2354
    @gregperkins2354 Год назад +1

    I noticed she said something about steering to a half degree. On Nimitz in 75 we held to one quarter degree headings.

    I steered my ship although I wasn’t a master helmsman and it was a guided missile frigate. I remember the first time I was UI, I got up to the bridge and couldn’t believe the helm was hand held!! I was expecting this big wheel that you would see in movies & TV shows, 😆

    Hey Y'all! just a heads up I was a prior Deck Seaman for a year and a half so that's where I got my driving experience from. I've been in over 3 years at this point, I just recently picked up PS2. My ship has been cut off from the internet 60% of the time because we're on deployment, but we're all safe :)

      Hey Jess I'm prior service Army and I plan on joining the Navy soon and going in at the rate of GSE or GSM since I worked on generators in the US Army. Be safe out there while you're at sea and know that your service is appreciated and of course I care so drop me a message anytime even if its just "Smalltalk"

    BZ to Petty Officer Burenn. The Navy operates entirely - large and important evolutions such as ConReps, launching and recovering aircraft or Special Sean and Anchor Details, but also small and important ones including material maintenance or preparing four meals (think MidRats) daily - on TEAMWORK. There are few teammates whose skill and attentiveness to detail are more crucial than the helmsman. A sincere thank you to this Master Helmsman.

      Usually BM's or undes stand helmsman but a majority of the time they need a master helm BM's are apart of the evolution.

    • @DarkFenix34512
      @DarkFenix34512 5 лет назад +3

      Its rare-ish, but for smaller ships(Destroyers/Mine Sweepers) the majority of the crew gets qualified so its not just one group suffering the watch. Also, many undesignated in Deck get qualified and then strike another rate.

      She says she was prior in deck and got qualified., @DarkFenix I was on a couple destroyes DD/DDG and no one other than deck steered the ship. Not even the QMs, which always annoyed me because they have a freaking wheel as their rating symbol.
