The Navy had a Commodore but it was changed to Rear Admiral Lower Half because the term Commodore seemed prestigious and the upper officers didn't like that. By calling Rear Admiral Lower Half, it put them in their place.

In 1976, when I was stationed in Sacramento at McClellan Air Force Base I saw one of the last Air Force Warrant officers in the stairwell of the Communications HQ building.
My father retired from the USAF in 1962 at the rank of CWO3. He didn't wear a uniform from the time he was promoted to CWO because his specialty and rank were Classified
Interesting. According to information that I have received, President Carter's TOS officially started in 1946, and he was at Annapolis during WW2. I also recall E1 were single stripes, with promotion to at least E2 upon graduation from Basic Training, aka Boot Camp. Of course, some of this was ages ago, too.

1975, E1 had one stripe, but no one stayed at E1 after boot camp.
Here's a bit of trivia. It's my understanding that Marine Corps Staff Sgts. generally don't like serving on Navy ships. This is because in the Marine Corps, an E-6 is a staff NCO and gets certain privileges like better housing. But onboard a Navy ship, and E-6 is just a Petty Officer 1st Class and not a staff NCO so they don't get the same special privileges as they would on a Marine Base.
I was a Seabee and spent a great deal of time serving with the Marines. I would never disrespect a Marine by calling him a PO1. He is a Marine Corps Staff Sargent

You can talk up the skills and knowledge of the W.O., but the fact remains that a boot ensign, is still above the experienced W.O., and that really sucks.
Yeah... Well... Depends on how you define "above". If an ensign so much as forces a W.O. to salute them, they can kiss their ass goodbye. No commanding officer worth a damn would ever tolerate having a boot ensign fuck with W.O.s.

Back in the day at SSC Glakes I saw two full Lts get their ass handed to them with an explanation of if The school can teach an E2 to do it correctly, than you two officers better learn to listen to the instructors (E6 and E7) because of the fact that you 2 are students, therefore the lowly instructors are superior to you 2 primadonas.
I always thought the rank of the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy was an E10 and therefore there was only one of them.

t would have been helpful to indicate how long (roughly) a guy needs to server in each rate before moving up.
In the military you have to be versatile. At any given time (especially in war) you may be called upon to fill any roll, regardless of your rank/rate or specific training. Sometimes you may have to take on a position without any training or guidance whatsoever. And, you are expected to make it happen! By God, we Absolutely make it happen! Blind relief, Baby!!!

The star and the fouled anchor on the shoulder boards indicates a line officer. Other devices are used for medical, legal, chaplain, etc.
I remember that my brother was a Chief Petty Officer by the time he left the Navy. That was I believe around when he was in for 15 years. After that much time I would have made it a full career.

My uncle was Rear Admiral George McFadden O'Rear who commanded the USS Arkansas Battleship and the fleet at the Battle of Iwo Jima in WW2.

I went to BEE (Basic Electricity and Electronics) in San Diego, and there was a Seaman Swim, which isn't so bad, but there was also a Seaman with the last name Swallow. I think he had some added incentive to make PO3.

Made it to 1st Class Petty Officer in 4 years 11 months. Needed 12 months to sew it on and I had 23 months left of a 6 year enlistment.

United States Army was created on June 3, 1784. United States Navy was created on October 13, 1775. The Continental Army of George Washington was disbanded in 1783 AFTER the treaty of Paris. The Continental Army and the US Army are separate entities. Also, the USN is the ONLY military of the US that was created within the Constitution.
Lyndon Johnson was a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve, not in the regular United States Navy.

I'm an Army Vet, and Navy ranks always confused the hell out of me.

Not everyone. Most left boot as E1... what you left at boot (RATE) depended upon what you did prior to military service, college, and what was written in your contract.

Minor correction we don’t call it a perched eagle only captains 0-6 where’s an eagle (a silver spread eagle) us petty officers wear a crow. Also it’s command master chief, then fleet/force master chief then its MCPON

No I was on a Sumner class destroyer and our captain on the USS O'brien DD 725 sorry WWll and made Captain + he was a mustang served his early years as a petty officer
Sumner class destroyer. My brother was aboard the USS Allen M. Sumner DD 692. From 1960/1964, out of MayPort Jacksonville Florida. I remember going up on weekends to pick him up and we would get to eat lunch aboard ship. I remember going through the line with my brother and a couple other guys if he knew and I asked the guys. I don’t know why you guys hate this food so much it’s the same stuff they service in elementary school. And I made a comment only there, I have to pay $.65 for my lunch. Later that day, my brother was able to arrange a tour on the other side of Mayport aboard, the USS, Shangri-La, the aircraft carrier was in port.

Grandpa made it to e8 and was happy at san diego but found out if he actually went through with getting his e9 rank he would have had to move. His time was up around this time and everyone was expecting him to re-enlist but he gave the deuces and got the fuck outta there
Best career decision i made. Rank is easier to understand. Ensign, tribble, plebes?, I prefer cruit, maggott, lowest form of life, as learning how to build yourself as a soldier with a guaranteed future in THE U.S. Army. Civilian life will be easy after the physical training and the Bust-ass-ness. Hopefully no substance problems.

I was a AO2. I loaded on F-14,P-3,A-6 and I was on a nuclear team
There are numerous errors in this video. Whoever made it clearly doesn't know what they are talking about hasn't performed even basic research. E.g. the Navy was formed by congress not General Washington, numerous erroneous references to rate when they should be referencing rank, complete misunderstanding of the difference between rate and rank and the basic organization of the Navy enlisted ranks, etc. In short, this video is a complete waste of time.

Back in the day, if you went to ATD as an E-1, you got an anchor, at E-2 it became an anchor and two stripes. The anchor was for seaman ATD. I can't recall what airmen and firemen got.
What is ATD? In aviation we were called airmen and we we had green strips for E-1 thru E-3. I was an AX2 after 2 1/2 years. They don’t even have that rating anymore. It’s just an AT that maintains electronics for antisubmarine warfare. I was in a Patrol Squadron 50 years ago.
@@Chris_at_Home Apprenticeship Training Division. Ran about 4 or 5 weeks, then out to the fleet. For seaman, you learned the finer points of stripping and waxing, with a bit of painting tossed in for good measure. It was my understanding Firemen and Airmen had the same kind of deal if they didn't have an "A" school or rocked out of one. I could be wrong, it has been about 40 years. 😂

Between boot camp, Avionics A School and C schools on P3s I was in the Navy a year and a day before I made it to the squadron,then a month later I was back in school. I was stationed out of NAS Brunswick Maine but went to Sicily, Rota, Azores and around South America. I was a ground pounder, but went on most of the detachments where they send a few planes to another base for one reason or another. South America was fun being 20 and getting per diem and staying in hotels for 3 1/2 months. 10 days right on Cocoa Cabana Strip in Rio when I was 20 was fun.

There’s mixed sea stories of why but honestly it just comes down to it was the best way to attach them.

Hallelujah, I've reacted to a number of these types of videos, and this is the first video of this type that understood that Navy enlisted are broken into "rates," not ranks. However, the video missed the mark for warrant and commissioned officers as what was referred to as "ranks" are actually "grades." "Rank" only exists within a grade, i.e., a Commander (O-5) who is promoted to that grade before all other Commanders "outranks" them.
"Ranks" is used for commissioned officers on official US government websites. Should we poor civilians presume to know more about the system than the Department of the Navy?
Ratings in the Navy are your job. Ranks are third class, second class, etc. Pay rate is E-4, E-5, etc
Retired Master Chief here. My rate is AW. My pay rate is E-9. My rank is Master Chief
its both you would call a sailor as both his rank and rate. Ex:BM1, ITS3, LSC

@@peanuts556 well its been a while since i was in the navy @39 yrs, so i forgot some of the terms. i was the head mess deck master at arms for 3 months. i was sent there after my court marshall , didnt get a reduce in rate or pay cut , just got extra duty and sent to the mess decks, even volunteered to stay longer on the mess decks after my term was up. i never had to stand watch, got liberty every night, while in port.

So things I forgot (or chose to forget) have been coming back during my research! lol! And with Orlando being a former ARMY AIR FORCE base prior to becoming Navy, they used a lot of Army terminology (mostly by the civilians)! And nothing irks me more than to hear someone call a SAILOR a SOLDIER! Well, looks like you made out with Mess Deck duties! ;)
@@peanuts556 i went to boot camp in San Diego, but i read where the only boot camp now, is in Michigan. if i remember right, use to be 2 bases, one on the west coast and one on the east. now they just have one? must be a very large base to handle all the new recruits.
@@dennismckown4951 Great Lakes is the only one now, but also the original... SD opened in 1923, GLs in 1911, and Orl in 1968. Orl closed in 1994 (last graduating recruit class but base was officially locked in 1999.) SDs last class was 1993. About July/August of 1994 females were sent to GLs. Last females to graduate Orl was Oct 1994. Last males was Dec 1994. GLs also had female recruits there in the 40s and 50s. Females had trained at Hunter College, then GLs (there is another place also before GLs, but the name escapes me. One of my shipmates, his wife's mother went there and will bring her company book to our next reunion for me to scan). After GLs, females went to Bainbridge and in 1972, to Orlando. There have been several training camps (upstate NY, Sanford Fla, Norfolk VA to name a couple). It was to fit the needs of the Navy. At our last reunion, I scanned the LAST PASS IN REVIEW for SD someone had. I may add what info I have for GLs and SD on my webpage, but for now, it's all about NTC/RTC Orlando. BTW: I checked an aerial view and saw the barracks my daughter went through, those were torn down. GLs once again, moved the Recruit side of the base.

Rates for USN, ranks for other forces.
If you're asking for a video featuring USN Rates and videos for Ranks of other Forces in the USM and other militaries, there are videos up, but if you were trying to say that the USN calls Ranks "Rates", they don't. Ranks are ranks still, but Rates are MOS, like ITS (Information Technician - Submarines), FC (Fire Control/Command), MM (Machinist's Mate), BM (Boatswain's Mate). You can still ask a sailor "What's your MOS" and they'll understand, but Sailors would ask each other "Yo, what Rate are you?" or even go around that and ask "What's your A-School? / What A-School did you attend?".
@@DevCav That's not right. Enlisted men have rates, only officers have ranks. Rate = "rank". Rating = "job". Most sailors refer to rating as "rate", but this is actually incorrect. Seaman, Airman Apprentice, and Petty Officer 2nd Class are "rates". Electrician's Mate, Machinist's Mate, Electronics Technician are all "ratings". Ensign, Lieutenant Commander, Captain, these are all "ranks".
Or we could just look at the patch on their dress uniform.

Rank of Commodore went out of existence in 1950 when the last one retired. It was confusing to give a star rank to someone not called Admiral. Army Air Force and Marines call their one star ranks Brigadier General.
Commodore is now a title for people in command of a squadron. We also use captain as a title as well. I was part of submarine squadron 6. The commander of that squadron at the time was a Captain. We called him "commodore". The commander of my submarine held the rank of Commander. It's customary to call him captain.
@@HowieIsaacks Thanks for that info. I only meant that the “rank” of Commodore was discontinued in 1950. As you say the “title” still exists in a looser sense just as the skipper of a ship is frequently called “captain” even if he or she does not officially hold that rank.
Commodore is also an honorary title given to a Captain traveling on a ship but is not in the direct line of command. Temporary “bump” up (NEVER down) to avoid confusion.
There were Commodores when I was in ...1979-1985...they were changed around that time..
I’m in the Navy the ranks are the worst between e-4 to e-6 how tf am I supposed to know what everyone jobs are.
I'm a Navy veteran. When I was in the Navy, there were an insignia for E-1. Seaman Recruit had one stripe. This is what happens when civilians who were never been in the military do these videos. They have no idea what they are talking about.
I was in 76-80 and E-1's didn't wear a stripe. I know what I'm talking about.

Yes, and every command should have a Master Chief PO of the command. On some smaller commands a Senior chief may fill that roll.

I met this sailor with a gold 3 stripe seaman rank...his hash marks on his right sleeve were 8 gold ...this guy was given more respect than a senior chief.. I talked to him..an old guy...

It's the highest rank of US Navy, like the General of the Armies in Army. Both have 6-star insignia.

@@jerryinsc Yeah I just found my old Bluejackets manual and there’s nothing about an E-10 for MCPON.
Still an E9, with more seniority than any other E9 in the Navy.
And when you finish the job as MCPON, you are forced retired.
E-4 thru E-9 are all considered "no commissioned officers". Also, at least back in the 1970's when I was in the Navy, (10 years), E7 thru E9 were appointed by Congress just like Officers.

E-4s in the Air Force are not non-commissioned officers since Sergeants no longer exist in the Air Force. I was a Senior Airman, then a "Buck Sergeant" before I became a Staff Sergeant.
E-4 through E-9 are non-commissioned officers (NCOs), and they're not appointed by Congress! E-7 through E-9 are selected by a NavPers selection board, not Congress. CWO4 USN Ret.

I remember one time a marine vet said to me that the marines existed before the navy because they had to guard the boats being built
We might want to refer to John Paul Jones as to the beginning of The U.S. Marines. A😮 Sailors job is to run the ship all the time. A few select sailors were reserved in battle to handle the cannons. The Marines were required for battle on deck when confronting enemy fighters from an enemy ship. Mostly hand to hand combat. While the sailors ran the ship. The U.S. Marines aboard Sailing Ships were a very tough lot. They had to be stone cold killers. When John Paul Jones commanded the U.S. Navy. He did so as a decorated Ships Captain and as a fleet admiral. Admiral Jones knew shipboard combat intimately. Fighting aboard a ship is primarily hand to hand. The rifles and pistols at the time were flint lock firearms. That required a lengthy process to reload. Thus making it impossible to reload in hand to hand combat which was conducted with swords, knives and blunt devices. So you see a wooden sailing that's a ship of a military purpose had to have dedicated fighting men. Every ship of this era had these dedicated fighting men on board their ships. Including the VOC The Dutch East Indias Trading company which had its own standing Military incorporated into its Trading Ships. The Dutch were so good at defending themselves. They even took on the British Navy twice and defeated them. John Paul Jones studied the Dutch VOC.
The US Navy is a good study. Well worth a persuit. The U.S. Marines still maintain tge8rvrelationship with the Navy. But since WWII Theri mission has changed to a Seaborn Army.
Marines are part of the Dept of the Navy and even the most senior Marine officers report to the Secretary of the Navy. IOW, there IS no "Secretary of the Marines", a fact they can't STAND to admit. 😂

Navy needs to get with it and along with all the other branches of the military..and all chamge their ranks to be the same uniform as the Army
I served 22 years and did just fine in the long established rate/rank structure, including serving alongside my Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps Brothers and Sisters in the air (airborne), field, ashore, and at sea. Oddly, I never heard any of them say that we need to "get with it" and change our rank structure because it was different than theirs.
That will never happen. There is a lot of honored tradition with the Navy and the Marines. You will just to learn the ranks.

Did you ever serve your country in the military?? Young men 17-18 yrs old learn the rank structure quite quickly because they are told to do it!! As a Navy Doctor who requested duty with the Marines, I learned their M.C. ranks in an hour or so! From the tenor of your comment, I would seriously suggest you get yourself into therapy/counseling ASAP
