    It took a new Bolt Action Starter Set for Mordian to finally do some French content

      They are a niche even in a niche, late war French are more popular in my meta. But I bet the free conscripts and free medium artillery piece tickeled the guard part of his brain.

    As a main French (discounting my K47 Germans and Fins) it isn't a French starter but it is an almost perfect bases for one. You take this, add another Infantry squad, 2 medium Howitzers and skip the AT and MMG and that's a nice 850 points that you then add the fun stuff to.
    The only real problem with the box is like you say the light AT should have been a Medium Howitzer. The MMG can stay as its tradition.
    For fun stuff I highly recommend 2 units of vet Cavalry as the highly mobile Infantry to actually get stuff done. Then going to 1500, go triple motorcycle weapons team (replacing an armoured car), Dragoons and a Renault FT as the cheapest MMG ever.

    I am not a Bolt Action player but I do play Chain of Command and did run French Army in FoW back in the day.
    The french could have better ATG, the 47mm is exceptional but was rare. If you don't like the 25mm, the French did repurpose 75/1897 guns for ATG work.
    As well, Char B1 was not deployed as an infantry support tank, the R35 and H35 along with the FT17 were the tanks deployed in infantry support role.
    But I am grad the VB rifle grenades are available. The problem with MMG is one I often hear about Bolt Action, in CoC and FoW, MMG and HMG are rightly held in fear, but for the French, that is why God gave them the VB, Mortars and Artillery. Pin them down and the infantry can do its job and march methodically towards the objective

    It's the 'What If' aspect with the WW2 French. On paper they were a good army but poorly led. They did fight well but the Germans ran rings around them (as they did with everyone at the time).
    Vive La France!
    En Evant!
    Mange Touts!

    I got the infantry starter bundle and have been loving the process of making them, and have to say with the faction rules they have making lists oftern ends up with more inexperienced infantry then even the soviets

    Picked it as my first army. Gonna paint it up as soon as my Deadzone and 40k Project are done. ...and im kinda hyped for my French army! =)

  • @dannyhalas9408
    @dannyhalas9408 8 месяцев назад +3

    I wouldn't go for this one. You want the two medium howitzers for the the French. The Char B tank is too expensive in points but is surprisingly effective with three sources of fire even against all comers. I'd go for some of the great infantry and just buy the bits you'd need.

  • @DenMedSvartNos
    @DenMedSvartNos 8 месяцев назад +2

    Biggest problem with this starter set is that the Char B1 Bis is a really, really weak tank for the cost (245 for a regular I believe, it's a bit nuts). It's a really cool design of course
    A smaller tank (though all early french tanks suck, bar the Renault FT), and as you said, a bigger artillery piece would've made for a more playable starter set I think

  • @ArchaiKM
    @ArchaiKM 8 месяцев назад +3

    I got one a bit ago to do a Vichy French one, and some extra bits went into my SAS and Desert Polish. I thought it was really good! Only thing that disappointed me was we got the light AT gun instead of the light artillery.

    I bought the 'all in' bundle, which had the starter army, book and tons of other stuff, plus I bought the Med AT gun and a dedicated tow. The upshot is, I have both light and Medium AT guns and Howitzers and plenty of options

    It is a very nice box that I would buy, had I not already build this with plastic Wargames Atlantic French. Having said that, the French Army bundle DOES come with 2 artillery pieces, one is the 47mm anti tank, a Somua , a Panhard and an extra senegalese infantry squad. Plus some cavalry and chenilette. That one is expensive though. It is everything you might need though, but you'll be speaking in a French accent when you're done. I think.

    I’m looking to get into bolt action an I always found the French army in ww2 to be really cool. I was wondering how this would interact with late war if you decided to run it against a late war list?

    • @ethanklee9041

      I think they get a weird situation, but I think they can run free French with lend lease vehicles. But I know the free French forces are mostly in different theatre books like they have some units for free French in the western desert book. I would ask about it on the subreddit to get a good explanation on how you can go about it.

  • @robertstrong6798

    Well the French army did have the best tanks and all there units were fully motorised. They were very well equipped , they were probably the best army in Europe if not the world 🌎 only problem was there generals were fighting WW1. On the table top great 👍 we can use there units properly lol 😂

    • @blecao
      @blecao 8 месяцев назад +1

      I must say that the figthing ww1 has been overstated
      They expected ww2 to be one of atrituin wich in the end it was but while theyr doctrine was centered on firepower when properly aplied it worked
      The thing was horrible nefarius coordinarion.
      The best/worst example was the armored units that where tasked with an inmidiate counteratack when the germans croossed the meusse not atacking after the following day due to command org being horrible

    • @captainburnos2828
      @captainburnos2828 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@blecao Most importantly the French Army was an offensive army, not a defensive one (hence the creation of the Maginot Line, whose objective was not to stop but delay the germans and was...well...most efficient at that), they started loosing when they stopped thinking about counter-attacking the ennemy and just act in defense.

    I love armies that history has treated badly
    Austrians in the napoleonic and seven years war
    French in the ww2
    Imperial guard in general
    The only nitpick about the set is that it comes only with a ligth artillery piece while french main thing is that they can take a up to a medium free
    Also the idea i think is to spam vb launchers since you dont care that the one shooting is inexperience
    For me its quite great since i alrredy have 2 medium howitzers but only 30 infantry from atlantic

    I feel like in the game designers haste to make all of the armies have completely different special abilities. They really need kept the French rules wise. I would say just give them the free inexperienced unit like the Soviets have.

    I don't know if this is a offensive question to bolt action players. I don't mean to offend. Do bolt action models work well as 40k guardsmen models?

    • @chae7684
      @chae7684 8 месяцев назад +1

      Not really. Although they're technically I'm the same scale 40k is heroic where bolt action in more realistically proportioned. A lot of stuff just doesn't look right next to 40k stuff. In saying that I have seen some success with people just doing head swaps with warlord models which works out well because the warlord kits always have plenty of spare heads

    I've got a French miniature amry, albeit not WOII but Napoleonic. I showed some of the pictures to family members, and one of them, a young kid raised on modern day internet culture, asked me: 'if that is the French army then where is the white flag?' I said to him: 'that is American humour, we'll have none of that here...' He apologized.

    • @Per_Sun
      @Per_Sun 8 месяцев назад +1

      Cheap shots and uninspired. The French people were tenacious heroes and scores of Americans gave blood and life to liberate that nation and recover its artwork and heritage. We'll have none of that here.

    Rating the Char B1 bis as a medium tank is just wrong. It was a heavy tank. Also not wanting a MMG on your list is just ridiculous. Five man squads in any army is ahistorical. They also nerf the 75mm howitzer by declaring it's a light howitzer when it was a medium field gun. All these issues are caused by the frankly trash rules.
